For the semiconductor industry—a global oligopoly dominated by U.S. design giants like AMD and NVIDIA, yet reliant on Asian production—the stakes are immense. This article examines how these four nations might respond, the potential impact on the chip sector, and early indicators of their strategies, such as the Intel-TSMC joint venture. Excessive tariffs can lead to a series of subsequent problems, such as economic recession or challenges in controlling inflation. The future largely depends on the Federal Reserve’s actions.Let’s break down the key points:1. What Are the Specific Risks?Tariff Increases May Significantly Raise Core Inflation Rates:If the full impact is passed on to consumer prices, core inflation could rise by 2.5 percentage points. On Wed, 02 Apr 2025, US market managed to defy the trend and rose marginally, thanks to a surprising ADP employment report for March 2025. (see below) US ADP Employment. The March 2025 report, showed private sector employment growth of 155,000 jobs, exceeding market expectations of 118,000. This is a significant rebound from February’s upwardly revised of 84,000 jobs. Wage growth for job stayers rose by +4.6% YoY, while job changers saw a modest +6.5% increase, the lowest premium for switching jobs in over 3 years. Despite the better-than-expected report, US market was too “pre-occupied” with impending Trump’s tariffs and showed little interest; resulting in the 3 composite indexes trending lower at start of trading day. Trump 2.0: Worst Stock Market Start in 75 Years—Comeback or Crisis?
Trump’s second term is off to a rough start on Wall Street, marking one of the worst first 50 days for any U.S. president since 1950.According to Sundial Capital Research strategist Jason Goepfert, the S&P 500 has dropped about 6.4% since Trump 2.0 took office. Only two presidents had a worse start: Richard Nixon (-7.2%) and George W. Bush (-13.6%).For comparison, the best-performing presidents in their first 50 days were John F. Kennedy (+9.4%), Barack Obama (+5.7%), and Bill Clinton (+4.2%).While stock market performance isn’t always tied directly to politics, in this case, market volatility seems to be reflecting investor concerns—especially over tariffs and trade policies. With Q1 of 2025 now in the books, where do you think the market is headed next?
