years by separating signals from noise. The company invests in publicly listed and private companies with long-term growth potential, regardless of macroeconomic variables and short-term market fluctuations.

The company’s long-term investment vision and familiarity with new technologies made Tom Slater, its head of U.S. equity assets and portfolio manager of U.S. equities and long-term global growth funds, a natural choice for Barron’s recent Centennial Roundtable, whose members will be tasked with envisioning the next 100 years.

As a continuation of the conversation, the following are edited interviews, focusing on companies that offer the most exciting investment opportunities. Slater, along with Barron's Roundtable member James Anderson, serves as co-manager of the approximately £18 billion ($25 billion) Baillie Gifford's Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust (SMT) and the $145 million Baillie Gifford US Equity Growth fund (BGGSX). Co-manager. Both companies received a five-star rating from Morningstar. In the 12 months ending March 31, Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust rose 99%; In the year ending June 15, the U.S. The Equity Growth fund has a total return of 73%, ranking among the top in Morningstar's large Growth stock category.

Tom Slater, Photograph by Matt Marcus

Barron's: After a glorious 2020, growth stocks are facing challenges. Are you worried about that?

Tom SlaterWe do not focus on short-term fluctuations in stock prices. We focus on interesting companies with long-term growth opportunities. Our average holding period is 5 to 10 years. Only within this timeframe can fundamentals drive stock prices.

Many people try to focus on predicting economic variables. But they are inherently extremely unpredictable, if not completely impossible. At the same time, there are many predictable trends in fields such as communications, computing, machine learning, energy generation and storage, gene sequencing, and synthetic biology. We focus on predictable trends and the opportunities they create.

Barron's: At our centennial roundtable, you observed that some technologies in the field of biology, if not better than Moore's Law, at least follow a similar development trajectory. How should investors profit from this?

Tom SlaterThe decline in the gene sequencing cost curve is far greater than the decline in computing power costs under Moore's Law. Now, the cost reduction is extending to related fields. Gene sequencing is generating a large amount of medical data, the cost of processing and storing this data is rapidly decreasing, and the cost of applying machine learning to this data is also rapidly decreasing.

An adjuvant therapy is our ability to start printing (replicating) DNA or RNA. Moderna (MRNA) is printing RNA sequences. We are talking about programming biology, except that instead of coding with 1s and 0s, we use Gs, Ts, As, and Cs (the nucleic acid bases that make up the genome in the order of guanine, thymine, adenine, and cytosine).

Moderna's ability to produce safe and effective vaccines based on messenger RNA should boost confidence in the company's ability to produce vaccines to meet other huge, unmet needs, such as those against HIV/AIDS. Another synthetic biology company, Ginkgo Bioworks, will go public through a merger with a SPAC. It is writing strings of DNA code that can be used in biomanufacturing processes.

Barron's: Won't Moderna's success attract competitors?

Tom SlaterWhen a technology undergoes a dramatic change, rather than just an evolution of existing paradigms, established companies often find it difficult to accept this change. More likely, this technology will empower new businesses and new business models. Until now, this has been the case in the automotive industry with the development of electric vehicles or electric vehicles. Interestingly, pharmaceutical companies with large vaccine franchises have not yet developed an effective COVID-19 vaccine.

Barron's: Speaking of electric vehicles, Baillie Gifford has reduced his Tesla holdings from a peak position of over 7% to less than 2%. Why is that?

Tom SlaterWe still hold a large stake in Tesla. Part of the reason is that this sell-off reflects the strong performance of the company's stock price and the company's operational success in driving the stock price up. Another reason is that this sell-off is simply a comprehensive consideration of all possibilities looking upwards from here.

Barron's: Who is the next Tesla in electric vehicles and more broadly?

Tom SlaterChina is the world's largest auto market, and I would be surprised if there were no domestic competitors in China to challenge Tesla. We are investors in NIO (NIO), and NIO has the opportunity to become such a participant.

What characteristics make Tesla so interesting? More than 100 million cars are sold every year, which is a huge market. They approach this in a unique way, with a founder and CEO tying most of his wealth to the company. Tesla is tenaciously pursuing a long-term vision and doesn't need to worry too much about the stock market. During our holding period, Tesla's stock price fell by more than 30% 10 times.

Moderna has platform-based technology with a wide range of applications, so it's also very interesting. Illumina (ILMN), which makes genome sequencing instruments, has a similar opportunity.Chinese companies, such as Meituan (3690), which focuses on local services, and Pinduoduo (PDD), which operates in the retail sector, are attractive, partly because of their ambitions, which are gradually changing the entire supply chain of their industries.

In Western markets, the delivery of pre-processed foods was initially intended as an alternative to takeout, but in China, the scope is much larger, as there is a greater culture of eating pre-processed foods. In China, kitchens in apartment buildings are being designed to be smaller and smaller, while these buildings are being designed for efficient food delivery service infrastructure. When you are building reliable, fast-delivery infrastructure, related industries emerge.

ByteDance is also very charming.。 Its social media subsidiary TikTok has sparked controversy in the United States, but ByteDance is 95% about China, given how rapidly the company has grown in the domestic advertising market. In China, large companies led by founders are making full use of the scale advantages of the domestic market.

Barron's: Do you prefer to invest in companies led by founders as CEOs?

Tom SlaterWe want to invest in companies led by people who are optimized for long-term results. This is more common in founders, but that doesn't mean you can't see it in professional CEOs.

Francis deSouza has been the CEO of Inmena since 2016. The company has a large revenue base, is profitable, and is growing in a predictable manner. Last year, based on its forecast of market trends over the next 5 to 10 years, Inmina offered $8 billion to acquire Grail, a pre-revenue developer of cancer blood testing. The stock market doesn't like this approach, but it's exactly what founders should do.

Barron's: Which private companies should investors pay attention to?

Tom SlaterPrivate companies like ByteDance and SpaceX have market capitalizations of tens of billions of dollars. SpaceX is trying to reduce the cost of going into space by several orders of magnitude, and it is creating a new market: a commercial pathway to space. We are also investors in Relativity Space, a company that is using 3D printing technology to build rockets.

Barron's: Recently, you have reduced your holdings in Amazon.com. Why?

Tom SlaterWe have been shareholders of Amazon for 16 years. Prior to last year, any reduction in holdings was for the purpose of diversification within the fund. But Amazon is still a huge market for us, and it still faces some significant opportunities. The grocery business is one of them, and it is a huge category that is slowly going online.

On the other hand, Jeffrey Bezos's stepping down as CEO is a significant factor in our analysis of the company, coupled with the recent retirement of Jeff Wilker, who ran the consumer goods business (Bezos will become executive chairman on July 5). If you believe Bezos's vision and drive were important to Amazon's journey to this point, then even his partial exit is a more cautious reason.

Barron's: What other investments excite you?

Tom SlaterLemonade (LMND) was originally a company that sold renters' insurance, and this company is perfect for online sales—especially mobile sales. This company has created a great consumer experience. It allows customers to designate a charity to accept excess fluctuations in their insurance pool, which creates an incentive not to exaggerate claims. Rental insurance is usually the first type of insurance product people buy. If the experience is great, they will consider purchasing the same brand of pet, car, or homeowners insurance. Lemonade is building a modern technology stack in an industry where large vendors still operate within the mainstream framework.

We recently invested in 10X Genomics (TXG) and Recursion Pharmaceuticals (RXRX). The common theme, once again, is that the efficiency of applying information technology far exceeds that of existing companies.

Affirm Holdings (AFRM) also fits this theme. Traditionally, point-of-sale loans have been a bad experience for consumers, with high interest rates and hefty fines if you don't make payments. By using new technologies, Affirm has created a more consumer-facing experience, driving more people to use the service. The runway in this mode is very long.

Barron's: Under what circumstances will a lack of profits become an obstacle to investment?

Tom SlaterWhether a company is currently profitable has little to do with how much value it has created. Take a software-as-a-service (SAAS) company as an example. Signing a new customer may cost a lot of money in the first year, but the revenue stream generated by this deal can last for decades. As an investor, I want companies to sign as many clients as possible, which means they will lose a lot of money at the beginning. However, if they can retain these customers, the value creation could be massive.

Barron's: Thank you, Tom.

By Lauren R. Rublin, contributor to Barron's
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Baiji Investment: Meituan and Pinduoduo are the next Tesla-style companies
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nBaiji Investment: Meituan and Pinduoduo are the next Tesla-style companies\n
\n
\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Barrons巴伦
\n
2021-06-23 19:33
\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Edinburgh-based fund manager Baillie Gifford has built a remarkable investment track record over the past 110 years by separating signals from noise.

Not quarters.)”。\n在Baillie Gifford看来,“长期投资于最具竞争力、创新性和成长效率的极少数优质企业,并取得超额回报”,这才是真正的投资(actual investing)。","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"03086":0.9,"09086":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":4563,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":121806324,"gmtCreate":1624457804168,"gmtModify":1703837363971,"author":{"id":"3573541608753389","authorId":"3573541608753389","name":"EuniceLee","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/746ef6f7f3258deedfd721080b8deaeb","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3573541608753389","idStr":"3573541608753389"},"themes":[],"title":"","htmlText":"…","listText":"…","text":"…","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/121806324","repostId":"1146565871","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1146565871","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1624455991,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1146565871?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-23 21:46","market":"us","language":"zh","title":"The US Markit manufacturing PMI hit a record high in June, while the services PMI fell short of expectations.","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1146565871","media":"华尔街见闻","summary":"美国6月Markit制造业PMI初值62.6,高于预期的61.5以及前值62.1。","content":"
Financial data provider IHSMarkitThe U.S. manufacturing and services PMI data for June was released on Wednesday. Prices for goods and services are still soaring, record supply shortages are worsening rather than improving, businesses are struggling to fill gaps, and the rate at which manufacturing inventories are being depleted is worrying as businesses struggle to meet market demand.

In addition, Chris Williamson pointed out that although economic growth may peak in the second quarter, the subsequent inflation peak may be much higher.
\n
\n\n\n
,"news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{".DJI":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":4474,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":121808653,"gmtCreate":1624457792872,"gmtModify":1703837362998,"author":{"id":"3573541608753389","authorId":"3573541608753389","name":"EuniceLee","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/746ef6f7f3258deedfd721080b8deaeb","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3573541608753389","idStr":"3573541608753389"},"themes":[],"title":"","htmlText":":","listText":":","text":":","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/121808653","repostId":"2145929670","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2145929670","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1624452183,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2145929670?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-23 20:43","market":"us","language":"zh","title":"Tesla's Q2 deliveries are expected to hit a new high; has the buying opportunity arrived?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2145929670","media":"金十数据","summary":"市场普遍预期Q2交付量将再创新高,如何把握时机提早布局?","content":"
TeslaCEO Elon Musk sent an internal email to employees on the 18th local time.
