I Used to Hold Without Fear. Now I Sell Too Soon When I Have Unrealized Gains

Over the past decade, we've witnessed remarkable financial stories unfold. Companies like Nvidia have skyrocketed over 30,000%, while early Bitcoin investors have seen returns beyond imagination. These aren’t just numbers; they are examples of what’s possible when conviction meets patience. In trading and investing, there’s a loud crowd that praises high-risk, high-reward strategies, especially options. But sometimes, the most powerful gains come not from complexity or speed, but from simply holding a good stock through time. That sounds easy, but if you’ve been in the market long enough, you know it’s anything but. When Holding Worked Back when I started investing, I used Webull. I didn’t know much. I just kept reading one thing: “Buy and hold through volatility.” So that’s what I did. I

In theory, options should always deliver higher returns than the stock itself. After all, they're leveraged bets. But in real trading? Sometimes the unexpected happens — the stock ends up outperforming the option in percentage gain, especially when time or volatility plays tricks. Why Does It Happen? You’re right on direction, the stock flies — but your option… lags or even loses value. Why? Time decay: Options lose value with time, even if the stock moves slowly in your favor. Volatility crush: Right after a news event (like earnings), implied volatility may drop sharply, and your option premium deflates. Wrong strike or expiry: A deep out-of-the-money call doesn’t move much until the stock really explodes — and by then, you may have already sold or expired. Real Traders Know the Feeling

Yes, there are plenty of situations where holding the stock itself outperforms holding or trading the options, especially when the movement in the underlying asset is steady, slower than expected, or simply not volatile enough to justify the cost and decay of options. A classic example is when a stock appreciates gradually over time without large price spikes. In such cases, long-term investors who simply bought and held the stock often come out ahead of traders using calls or spreads. This is particularly true when implied volatility is high—meaning options are expensive—and the actual move in the stock fails to exceed what the market was pricing in. Even if the stock moves in the right direction, the gains from an option might be minimal or even negative due to time decay (theta), volati

🎯 Stock > Options? Yes, But Only If You Survive the Middle

I've experienced both — options giving me 300% overnight, and stocks giving me 200% over time. But here's the catch: most traders can't emotionally survive long enough to enjoy big stock gains. For example: I held $MSTR from $140 to $400+ in 2023. That was a 200% return. Meanwhile, my $CRCL calls expired worthless twice… before the stock ran 80% the next week. Recently, someone posted a 222% gain on $TSM from holding through the chop. That's conviction and discipline. So, is stock > options? Sometimes, yes. But only if: You size right. You don't panic on -20% dips. You have a real thesis, not FOMO. Options are tools. Leverage is beautiful if used with a plan. But stocks reward patience — and time smooths out entry mistakes. These days, I run a 50/30/20 split: 50% conviction stocks (e.g.

🔥 Holding > Options? 😲 222% gains just by sitting tight on $TSM! In a market obsessed with leverage and timing, sometimes… patience wins. Recently, retail traders spotlighted how simply holding $TSM from the October 2022 bottom netted over 220% — outpacing many of the short-term calls that expired worthless or underperformed. And this isn’t just about Taiwan Semi.  The same story’s played out with $NVDA, $BTC, and even $AAPL — names that rewarded those who stayed long, not just those who traded fast. Which begs the question: Have you ever seen stock gains crush option returns? 🚀 📈 Real Examples Let’s take $NVIDIA(NVDA)$  . A five-year holder saw a 2,000%+ return (yes, really), while many short-dated calls got eaten alive by theta

This is a thought-provoking question that touches on the tension between leveraged instruments like options and the long-term compounding power of holding quality assets. --- 🧠 On Options vs. Holding Stock Options can indeed offer significant leverage—but they come with a high risk of total loss, especially if time decay (theta) and volatility shifts don’t favour the position. Many seasoned investors and traders have seen options expire worthless despite being “right” on direction, simply because the timing didn’t align. Contrast that with holding fundamentally strong equities (e.g. Nvidia, TSM, or even Bitcoin as a speculative asset). The key edge here lies in: Time horizon: Great companies tend to compound over time. Investors who had conviction and patience often outperformed leveraged

When traders think about explosive gains, options are usually the go-to choice. Leverage, low capital outlay, and outsized percentage returns make them appealing. But every now and then, something surprising happens — the stock itself outperforms the option. Yes, it’s rare. But in strong momentum runs, holding the stock can sometimes beat the option — in both returns and peace of mind. Why Would Stock Outperform Options? Time decay kills options: Even if you're right on the direction, options lose value over time. If the stock doesn't move fast enough, your option premium may shrink — or even expire worthless. Volatility crush: After big news (like earnings or a product launch), implied volatility may collapse, causing your option value to drop — even if the stock rises. Delta lag: Deep ou

My best pick, PLTR, has shown solid gains with its data analytics focus. The TSMC 222% gain is impressive, but I haven’t hit that mark. Still, PLTR’s steady rise suits my strategy. I believe in time over options’ volatility. I haven’t seen 30,000% returns like Nvidia, but gradual growth works for me. I focus on stocks with strong fundamentals, like PLTR, for sustainable gains. In short, I stick to stocks for lower risk and trust time-driven growth, with PLTR as my standout so far.
