Earnings season continues next week, although the pace of releases has slowed. There are several electric vehicle stocks due to report during this period, including $Rivian Automotive, Inc.(RIVN)$ , $Lucid Group Inc(LCID)$, $Nikola Corporation(NKLA)$, $Li Auto(LI)$ and $Faraday Future Intelligent Electric Inc.(FFIE)$ .
Electric vehicle stocks have had a difficult year over the past year. ALL EV stocks have declined over the past year and are generating substantial losses as they attempt to ramp up production. How are electric vehicle sales this year? Let's look at their financial reports.

Lucid's grind to achieving production scale is complicated by rising costs and an economic downturn that's leaving deliveries well short of output. The production ramp-up to 7,180 vehicles in 2022 is encouraging, though delivering only 61% of the output is concerning as a sign of demand weakness and not merely a logistics disruption. Lucid fits better as a high-end brand appealing to high-net-worth consumers who value performance and cachet, though EV builders and legacy automakers with big delivery expectations facing tentative consumers is troublesome at all price points.
Rivian is tucking into the white space between the midsize and full-size pickup-truck segments. Yet the full marketing force of legacy US automakers -- and hundreds of thousands in potential fleet sales -- will crowd the intersection of EV buyer and pickup-truck driver as GM protects its turf with a Silverado EV and Ford raises output of the F-150 Lightning. This makes Rivian's SUV and delivery van the more competition-evading, though less prolific, products. All automakers will be buffeted by rising costs and slowing demand, though small-scale, unprofitable EV-only brands are the most vulnerable.
Chinese start-up Li Auto could see R&D and selling costs leap as it pushes into the hypercompetitive battery-electric vehicle (BEV) market, which risks delaying its first annual operating profit to 2024 in our scenario, one year later than the consensus expectation. The strategy shift, with its first BEV model slated for a 2H23 launch, allows it to capture BEVs' larger market size vs. hybrids, but will pit it against deep-pocketed early movers such as Tesla and BYD. Gross margin might lose steam as less-profitable BEVs account for a greater proportion of sales. Stepping up R&D investment to secure a technology edge is crucial for start-up automakers like Li that are bold enough to challenge established rivals.
