Morgan Stanley Turns Bullish on 8 Biotech Stocks: PTCT and BLTE Lead With Billion-Dollar Drug Opport

Morgan Stanley has initiated coverage on eight biotechnology companies spanning rare diseases, eye disorders, lung diseases and mental health. The firm sees significant potential in $PTC Therapeutics(PTCT)$ and $Belite Bio, Inc.(BLTE)$ , while $Trevi Therapeutics, Inc.(TRVI)$ and $COMPASS Pathways plc(CMPS)$ offer additional opportunities tied to clinical progress and potential commercialization.

The common thread? Each company is developing treatments for conditions where existing options remain limited — creating potentially attractive markets, but also significant clinical and regulatory risks.

📌 Key Takeaways

  • $PTC Therapeutics(PTCT)$ — $104 price target: Sephience has surpassed $600 million in annualized sales, with Morgan Stanley projecting peak revenue of approximately $1.7 billion.

  • $Belite Bio, Inc.(BLTE)$ — $206 price target: Tinlarebant could become the first approved treatment for Stargardt disease, with an FDA decision targeted for February 2027.

  • $Trevi Therapeutics, Inc.(TRVI)$ — $23 price target: Haduvio could address a substantial unmet need in chronic cough, with Phase III data expected in the second half of 2027.

  • $COMPASS Pathways plc(CMPS)$ — $18 price target: COMP360 could enter commercialization in 2027, although regulatory requirements and treatment logistics remain important hurdles.

  • Beyond the four leading names: $Morgan Stanley(MS)$ also sees opportunities in gene therapy, retinal disease and pulmonary medicine across four additional companies.

🧬 Why Are These Biotech Stocks Attracting Attention?

Biotechnology stocks often trade on expectations of future drug approvals, clinical trial results and commercial revenue. A single successful treatment can transform a company's financial outlook, particularly when it targets a disease with few existing therapies.

$Morgan Stanley(MS)$'s latest coverage highlights eight companies with different routes to growth — from an already commercialized drug to experimental therapies approaching major regulatory milestones.

Here are the four names at the center of the investment thesis.

💊 1. PTC Therapeutics ($PTCT): Can Sephience Sustain Its Growth?

$Morgan Stanley(MS)$ rating: Overweight | Price target: $104

$PTC Therapeutics(PTCT)$ is developing treatments for rare diseases, and its commercial momentum is increasingly tied to Sephience, an oral treatment for phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare inherited metabolic disorder.

According to Morgan Stanley, Sephience surpassed $600 million in annualized sales within roughly a year of launch. The bank estimates that peak annual revenue could reach approximately $1.7 billion.

Several factors support the growth outlook:

  • Commercial traction: Approximately 100 initial U.S. centers of excellence have begun prescribing Sephience.

  • Revenue potential: Morgan Stanley expects FY2026 Sephience revenue of approximately $955 million, above the company's existing guidance range of $850 million to $950 million.

  • Financial flexibility: PTC reported approximately $2.2 billion in cash and equivalents as of June 30, 2026.

However, investors should watch the rate of new patient additions and treatment persistence. Strong initial uptake does not automatically guarantee sustained growth.

The next important checkpoint is PTC's third-quarter earnings report, scheduled for October 29, when investors can assess whether patient additions and full-year revenue expectations support the bullish thesis.

👁️ 2. Belite Bio ($BLTE): A Potential First Treatment for Stargardt Disease

$Morgan Stanley(MS)$ rating: Overweight | Price target: $206

$Belite Bio, Inc.(BLTE)$ is developing tinlarebant for Stargardt disease type 1 (STGD1), an inherited retinal disorder that can cause progressive vision loss. There are currently no approved therapies specifically targeting the disease.

The investment case centers on tinlarebant's potential to become the first approved treatment for this condition.

Morgan Stanley highlighted Phase III DRAGON trial results showing a 35.7% reduction in lesion growth rate versus placebo. The FDA has accepted the drug's application for priority review, with a target decision date of February 12, 2027.

The opportunity extends beyond regulatory approval. Morgan Stanley estimates risk-adjusted peak revenue of approximately $3 billion for the Stargardt disease market, reflecting its view of the drug's potential commercial reach.

Still, several questions remain:

  • Will the FDA approve tinlarebant based on the available clinical evidence?

  • How will the final treatment price affect patient access and commercial uptake?

  • Can the company expand the opportunity into geographic atrophy, another retinal disease?

Interim results from the PHOENIX study in geographic atrophy are expected in the first half of 2027, potentially providing another catalyst.

For investors, BLTE represents a potentially significant opportunity — but one whose valuation depends heavily on regulatory and clinical outcomes.

🫁 3. Trevi Therapeutics ($TRVI): Targeting the Chronic Cough Market

$Morgan Stanley(MS)$ rating: Overweight | Price target: $23

$Trevi Therapeutics, Inc.(TRVI)$ is developing Haduvio, an investigational treatment designed to address chronic cough, including cough associated with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

Persistent cough can significantly affect patients' quality of life, while treatment options remain limited. Morgan Stanley believes Haduvio could become the first FDA-approved therapy specifically for chronic cough.

The company has two potential avenues for growth:

  • IPF-related cough: An opportunity that could support a meaningful commercial business on its own.

  • Refractory chronic cough: A broader potential market that could expand the drug's addressable patient population if clinical results are successful.

The next major milestone is the Phase III OCEAN-2 trial, with data expected in the second half of 2027.

Morgan Stanley considers a reduction in 24-hour cough frequency of approximately 30% versus placebo, alongside supportive patient-reported outcomes and acceptable discontinuation rates, consistent with its baseline expectations.

Until those results arrive, the commercial opportunity remains promising but unproven.

🧠 4. COMPASS Pathways ($CMPS): Can Psychedelic Therapy Reach Commercialization?

$Morgan Stanley(MS)$ rating: Overweight | Price target: $18

$COMPASS Pathways plc(CMPS)$ is developing COMP360, a psilocybin-based investigational treatment for treatment-resistant depression (TRD).

The company's opportunity lies in a patient population that does not respond adequately to existing treatments. Morgan Stanley estimates risk-adjusted peak U.S. sales of approximately $1.3 billion for COMP360 in TRD.

The company has reported positive Phase III results from two studies, supporting its planned regulatory submission. Morgan Stanley expects the rolling New Drug Application submission to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2026 and sees potential approval in the first half of 2027.

However, approval would be only the beginning.

Unlike a conventional prescription medicine, COMP360 requires a supervised treatment session lasting approximately six hours. The commercial model will therefore depend on treatment-center capacity, reimbursement, patient access and the regulatory requirements governing psilocybin.

Morgan Stanley expects revenue to ramp up gradually in the second half of 2027 rather than surge immediately after a potential launch.

The central question is whether COMPASS can turn positive clinical results into a scalable, commercially viable treatment model.

📊 Four More Biotech Stocks on Morgan Stanley's Radar

The remaining companies offer exposure to gene therapy, retinal disease and pulmonary medicine.

Investment thesis

$4D Molecular Therapeutics(FDMT)$

Equal-weight

$7–$16 base-case range

Its 4D-150 gene therapy could reduce the frequency of injections for retinal disease patients. Phase III data are expected in Q2 2027.

$Avalyn Pharma(AVLN)$

Overweight

$57

Inhaled treatments for progressive lung diseases could improve tolerability compared with existing oral therapies.

$Regenxbio(RGNX)$

Overweight

$18

Late-stage gene therapy programs target wet age-related macular degeneration and Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

$Kalaris Therapeutics Inc.(KLRS)$

Overweight

$14

TH103 aims to provide longer-lasting treatment for retinal diseases, with preliminary clinical data expected in H1 2027.

These companies illustrate the range of opportunities within biotech, but their investment cases depend on different milestones.

For FDMT and KLRS, treatment durability and safety will be critical. AVLN must demonstrate that inhaled delivery can provide a meaningful advantage for patients, while RGNX faces pivotal clinical and regulatory decisions across its gene therapy programs.

Investors should also distinguish between Morgan Stanley's Overweight ratings and its Equal-weight rating for FDMT: the report does not express the same relative conviction across all eight stocks.

💰 What Could This Mean for Investors?

Morgan Stanley's coverage highlights a familiar biotech investment pattern: companies can gain substantial value when they move from uncertain clinical development toward regulatory approval and commercial revenue.

But these eight stocks are not interchangeable.

Investment stage

Example

What investors should watch

Commercial growth

$PTC Therapeutics(PTCT)$

Patient additions, revenue growth and treatment persistence

Near-term regulatory catalyst

$Belite Bio, Inc.(BLTE)$

FDA decision, labeling and launch expectations

Clinical development

$Trevi Therapeutics, Inc.(TRVI)$

Phase III efficacy and safety results

Potential commercialization

$COMPASS Pathways plc(CMPS)$

Regulatory progress, treatment-center capacity and reimbursement

For investors, the distinction matters because the risks change as a drug advances through development.

Commercial-stage companies must demonstrate that sales can grow sustainably. Clinical-stage companies must first prove that their treatments are safe and effective, while companies approaching launch must show that their products can gain adoption in the real world.

Even a successful drug does not guarantee a successful stock investment. If a company's valuation already assumes strong commercial performance, disappointing results or slower uptake could still trigger a significant share-price decline.

⚠️ Key Risks to Keep in Mind

  • Clinical risk: Promising trial results may not be replicated or may fail to translate into meaningful patient benefits.

  • Regulatory risk: The FDA may reject an application, request additional evidence or impose restrictions.

  • Commercial risk: High treatment costs, reimbursement challenges and limited treatment-center capacity may slow adoption.

  • Valuation risk: Analyst price targets depend on assumptions about future sales, market size and the probability of success.

  • Financing risk: Development-stage companies may need additional capital before their treatments generate meaningful revenue, potentially diluting shareholders.

Morgan Stanley's price targets reflect its own forecasts and assumptions. They should not be interpreted as guaranteed returns or as a substitute for evaluating each company's financial position and risk profile.

🔎 What Comes Next?

Several milestones could help investors assess whether the bullish theses are playing out:

  • October 29, 2026: $PTC Therapeutics(PTCT)$' third-quarter earnings report could provide an update on Sephience's commercial trajectory.

  • Q4 2026: $COMPASS Pathways plc(CMPS)$ expects to complete its rolling NDA submission for COMP360. Investors will also watch upcoming gene therapy trial results across the sector.

  • February 12, 2027: The FDA's target action date for $Belite Bio, Inc.(BLTE)$'s tinlarebant application.

  • H1 2027: Potential COMP360 regulatory progress, Belite Bio's geographic atrophy study update and preliminary $Kalaris Therapeutics Inc.(KLRS)$ clinical data.

  • H2 2027: Expected Phase III data from $Trevi Therapeutics, Inc.(TRVI)$' OCEAN-2 trial, alongside other important clinical milestones.

These dates are expectations based on the reported research and company timelines, and they may change as development progresses.

🧭 The Bottom Line

$Morgan Stanley(MS)$'s coverage highlights eight biotech companies pursuing potentially valuable treatments in areas with substantial unmet medical needs.

$PTC Therapeutics(PTCT)$ offers a commercial growth story, $Belite Bio, Inc.(BLTE)$ a major regulatory catalyst, $Trevi Therapeutics, Inc.(TRVI)$ a clinical opportunity in chronic cough, and $COMPASS Pathways plc(CMPS)$ a potential new treatment model for depression. The other four companies add exposure to gene therapy, retinal disease and pulmonary medicine.

The upside could be significant if their treatments succeed, but so could the downside if clinical results, regulatory decisions or commercial adoption disappoint.

For investors, the most important question is not simply which company has the highest price target. It is whether the evidence, upcoming catalysts and current valuation justify the risks involved.

I find $PTC Therapeutics(PTCT)$ and $Belite Bio, Inc.(BLTE)$ particularly interesting. PTCT already has a commercial product generating meaningful revenue, while BLTE offers a major FDA catalyst in February 2027. I generally prefer companies with clear milestones and evidence of commercial demand.

However, biotech remains high risk. Even promising clinical results do not guarantee approval or share-price gains. For $Trevi Therapeutics, Inc.(TRVI)$ and CMPS, I would prefer to see stronger clinical and commercialization evidence before becoming too optimistic. Analyst price targets are useful references, not guaranteed returns.

Overall, I would keep position sizes small and avoid concentrating too much capital in one biotech stock. For me, the best opportunity is not the highest price target, but the company with the strongest balance of clinical progress, financial strength, upcoming catalysts and valuation.

Feels a bit too optimistic. PTCT at 101.55% revenue growth looks great on paper, but cash quality slipping and patent or competition risk can wreck that 1.7B peak story fast

My pick is PTC Therapeutics for the best balance of growth and risk.

Belite Bio has an exciting near-term FDA catalyst, while Trevi Therapeutics and COMPASS Pathways could offer substantial long-term upside if their pipelines succeed. However, these opportunities carry greater clinical and regulatory risk.

PTC already has commercial products and growing revenue, giving investors clearer fundamentals to evaluate. I would watch whether sales growth translates into stronger margins and cash flow.

Belite may have greater short-term upside on a positive FDA decision, but for the most compelling overall investment case, I prefer PTC’s combination of commercial traction and future growth potential.

Among these eight biotech stocks, I find $PTC Therapeutics (PTCT) most compelling because it already generates commercial revenue rather than relying entirely on future clinical success. Sephience’s growth could support its valuation, although patient retention and revenue guidance remain critical.

$Belite Bio (BLTE) offers greater upside ahead of its February 2027 FDA decision, but promising Phase III results cannot eliminate regulatory and valuation risks.

Meanwhile, $Trevi Therapeutics (TRVI) and $COMPASS Pathways (CMPS) offer opportunities, but commercialization remains uncertain.

My view: PTCT offers clearer execution, while BLTE offers a catalyst-driven investment case. Analyst price targets are scenarios, not guarantees. In biotech, the best opportunity is not necessarily the drug with the largest market, but the company whose clinical evidence, cash runway and valuation offer the best risk-adjusted return.
