Still it exacted a reaction.
So far, TSLA is poised to open higher on Friday (+3.98%). Is redemption on the card?
Whatever the case might be, stay cool and observe first.
TSLA Q3 : from EVs to Robotics, AI & FSD ?
@JC888:
$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ enters next week’s quarterly earnings announcement with (a) a delivery beat, (b) a still-expensive valuation, and (c) an unusually high burden of proof on its robotics & autonomy ambitions. The immediate question though is whether: Market will reward the operational resilience shown in Q3. Discount TSLA for slow progress in the businesses that now dominate its valuation. Deliveries beat, Elusive growth. For Q3 2026, TSLA delivered 486,532 vehicles, down by -2.0% YoY, but ahead of Bloomberg’s estimates of 463,761 vehicles and TSLA’s own compiled forecast of 462,000. After the announcement on 02 Oct 2026, shares rose more than +2.0% in premarket trading; proving that the company could still outperform despite the expiration of the US $7,500 EV tax credit in September 2025. US automobile industry’s backdrop remains difficult: According to Cox Automotive, US EV sales in August 2026, were down -47% from 2025. Several domestic automakers have either (a) scaled back EV plans or (b) withdrawn models from US market. On the other hand, TSLA has gained US market share since the credit expired. This followed a record Q2 2026, with another strong delivery result, suggesting it has weathered the post-incentive slowdown better than most competitors. Market Not Paying for Cars Despite the delivery strength, the equity story has shifted decisively beyond automobiles. Tesla makes most of its money by selling Model 3 & Model Y EVs, supplemented by extra income from Megapack and Powerwall energy batteries, as well as a growing services business that includes Full Self-Driving (supervised) subscriptions. Also, investors are beginning to value TSLA as a (a) robotics, (b) autonomy, and (c) software platform rather than an EV manufacturer. This shift is visible in “numbers” terms: Active FSD subscriptions reached 1.48 million in Q2 2026. This is up +56.0% YoY and up from 1.28 million in Q1 2026. More than 55% of new North American deliveries came with a registered FSD subscription, unlike in the past, car owner has to apply for it. This as services and other revenue grew 50% in the quarter, TSLA’s fastest-growing reporting line. Energy storage is also providing growth support: Deployments rose +41.0% YoY to 13.5 GWh in Q2 2026 alone. In Q3 2026, it further increased to 13.7 GWh. Cybercab production has begun at Gigafactory Texas, that has installed capacity above 125,000 units annually, while Fremont has been retooled after the discontinuation of the Model S & Model X to accommodate initial Optimus production lines. Cash Burn & Futuristic Multiple While the numbers on new frontier businesses look promising, the problem is that these future-facing businesses are expensive to build. In Q2 2026 quarterly earnings was: Revenue rose by +26% to $28,236 million. Operating income fell by -57% to $398 million, leaving a GAAP operating margin of just +1.4%. Free cash flow (FCF) was a negative -$1,092 million. Capital spending reached $5.8 billion, up by +142% YoY. TSLA is not immediately cash-constrained: Operating cash flow rose +85% to $4,697 million. The company held $43,524 million in cash & investments. However, the combination of (a) thin operating profitability, (b) heavy investment, and (c) negative FCF means TSLA’s valuation depends heavily on execution rather than current earnings. As of 9 Oct 2026, with forward earnings at 218.80x, TSLA trades far above both its (1) 5-year average of 121.43 and (2) the sector average of 14.78. With TSLA’s trailing price-to-earnings ratio at roughly 344, compared with BYD’s approximately 20x. The gap captures the central tension: TSLA’s automotive business alone cannot justify the price, so robotaxis, autonomy, energy, and Optimus must eventually become very large profit engines. Can they ? Optimus Delays + Pressure Optimus has become a particular source of frustration. $JPMorgan Chase(JPM)$ now expects production to begin “in the coming months,” with commercial sales in H2 2027. As usual, this is later than the original timelines provided by TSLA where production was supposed to happen in the Summer of 2026 and initial sales as early as end of 2026. Then again, this is not the first time that Musk has fallen behind on delivery, it happened with its EVs, cybertruck, Full Self-Driving software etc… The revised view followed a JPM analyst visit to the Fremont factory. The delays matter because investors have assigned substantial value to the humanoid-robot opportunity. $Bank of America(BAC)$ has valued TSLA’s future Optimus business at around $30 billion, while $Morgan Stanley(MS)$ has suggested it could be worth as much as $180 billion. Mr CEO & storytell (Musk) himself has described Optimus as potentially TSLA’s hardest product to scale because nearly every component is new. Just so investors are aware, US market has already punished vague guidance. TSLA took a hit after its late-July 2026 earnings call, falling by -14.5% in a single day and nearly -18% over the week as investors sought clear timelines for Optimus, robotaxis, and self-driving software. (see above) The stock remains down about -16.9% YTD. Robotaxi ‘Limited’ progress. TSLA’s robotaxi network has also remained ‘perpetually’ in its early-stage. According to one news print, TSLA’s robotaxi operates in 6 cities across Texas and Florida, while another describes service across 7 metro areas: Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, & Tampa are ramping unsupervised operations, while the San Francisco Bay Area operates with a safety driver (supervised). Progress is real but modest relative to the ambition surrounding the program. Instead of fortifying its FSD platform, TSLA decided to focus on theatrics like adding gold-clad, pedal-free, steering-wheel-free Cybercab to its robotaxi fleet. Its network still lags $Alphabet(GOOG)$’s Waymo, that is going global incidentally (see below) and remains well behind the targets Musk set at the end of 2025. For a stock carrying an autonomy premium, the gap between narrative and commercial scale remains a key vulnerability. Roadster Reveal Is Unlikely to Change the Math TSLA’s Roadster event scheduled for 15 Oct 2026 adds another near-term catalyst, but probably not a fundamental one. The reported demonstration would use compressed-gas thrusters to make the car hover, with the $250,000 Founders Series capped at 1,000 vehicles. Even a complete sellout would generate only $250 million in revenue, small against TSLA’s roughly $1.48 trillion valuation. History also argues for caution: TSLA shares fell -6% after the 2019 Cybertruck reveal. It fell -8.3% after the October 2024 Cybercab unveiling. And fell -5.92% after a September 2025 Cybercab event. In each case, the issue was not the spectacle itself but uncertainty over when the technology would translate into revenue. A successful hover could lift sentiment, but investors are likely to focus on pricing, production plans, and delivery dates. The Real Test - Earnings Perhaps TSLA’s 21 Oct 2026 earnings report will be the more consequential event. Market will look for evidence that the delivery beat can translate into margin recovery rather than another quarter of weak profitability and negative free cash flow. A margin improvement alongside continued high investment would strengthen the bull case; another quarter of cash burn without clearer autonomy or Optimus milestones would make the premium valuation harder to defend. The options market also suggests elevated uncertainty. (see above) One passage notes TSLA’s implied-volatility percentile at 87% ahead of Q3 2026 earnings announcement, with bear call spreads being considered by traders expecting limited upside or a decline. While the specific strike examples referenced a 23 Jun 2026 announcement and therefore do not apply directly to next week, the broader point stands: elevated implied volatility signals that traders expect a large post-earnings move. Outlook: Slightly Lower, Next Week Overall, analysts are of the opinion that TSLA is more likely to fall than rise by this time next week. The Q3 delivery beat will be a genuine positive, and energy storage, FSD subscriptions, and Cybercab production provide evidence that the company is making progress beyond its core auto business. But TSLA already prices in extraordinary success of: A forward multiple near 219x earnings. A trailing earnings near 344x, Negative free cash flow. A 1.4% operating margin. Repeated Optimus delays that leave little room for disappointment. Unless the Roadster reveal delivers unusually credible commercial details or Q3 earnings report shows a clear margin and cash-flow recovery, the risk-reward into 21 Oct 2026 favours a modest decline. A modest rise is possible if TSLA pairs the delivery beat with convincing guidance, but the more probable outcome is that investors continue to demand proof before paying further for the robotics and autonomy story. Technical Indicators. Rounding off TSLA with its latest technical indicators of (1) Simple Moving Averages of 20-day, 50-day & 200-day, (2) MACD and (3) RSI to have an idea where TSLA’s trajectory is heading. Simple Moving Averages. On 14 Oct 2026, TSLA ended the day at $367.16 /share. This is lower than its SMA of (a) 20-day ($371.00) and 200-day ($388.98) but higher than its 50-day SMA ($357.94). This suggest short-term weakness while the intermediate recovery remains intact. TSLA remaining below its declining 200-day SMA, and the 50-day SMA remains below the 200-day following the chart’s marked death cross. Collectively, these readings suggest a rebound within a longer-term downtrend rather than a confirmed bullish reversal. MACD. Both the MACD line (4.04) and Signal line (4.30) sit above the Zero line. This confirms that the overall broader movement remains in positive/bullish territory following the sharp bounce off August 2026 lows. However with the MACD line falling below the Signal line, it forms a bearish crossover, signaling that short-term upside momentum is fading. Finally, a negative divergence (-0.26) confirms a bearish momentum shift. It indicates that previous upward push has lost strength and a pullback or consolidation phase is underway. RSI. The 14-day RSI of 49.27 sits just below the neutral 50 midpoint, indicating broadly balanced momentum with a slight bearish tilt. It is neither overbought nor oversold, so it offers no strong evidence of either an overheated rally or an oversold rebound. My viewpoints : (mine only) Investing in TSLA today means betting on whether a $1.48 trillion speculative AI and robotics platform can eventually justify its triple-digit earnings multiple. Until moonshots like Optimus and full autonomy turn into actual profits, the stock remains a high-risk gamble on future promises rather than present results. Agree ?
