Anchored in Legacy, Sailing into Tomorrow : My 118% Voyage with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding and its Spin-Offs

I fell for $YZJ Shipbldg SGD(BS6.SI)$ 

not as a fleeting romance but as a lifelong partnership.  Yangzijiang's 6 decades of relentless reinvention, an unbreakable order book and now a record Q2 25 earnings have turned that conviction into a 118% gain on my shipyard stake.  Along the way, I received $YZJ Fin Hldg(YF8.SI)$ 

for free when it spun off and this week, I will be handed its Maritime Division stock 1 for 1 ratio, subject to shareholders approval on September 4.  This story is more than just numbers.  It is proof that backing visionary companies and compounding gifts of trust - creates the richest voyage of all.

How Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Started 

Yangzijiang began in 1956 as a small river bank cooperative.  Strategic relocations in 1975 and a major shipyard expansion in 2005 set the stage for its historic 2007 listing on the SGX - the first Chinese shipyard to do so.  Today it employs over 6,000 workers and can build more than 6 million DWT annually.  Every ship delivered reflects decades of craftsmanship and disciplined execution.

Charting New Horizons : The New Yard

Responding to surging demand for clean energy vessels, Yangzijiang secured 866,671 sq metres in the Jingjiang Economic Zone next to its Xinfu shipyard.

RMB 3 billion capex over 2 years, fully funded by its net cash rich balance sheet.

20% capacity uplift, equating to 6 additional ultra large or high value ships each year.

Focus on LNG and methanol dual fuel vessels to lead the green shipping revolution. 

Seamless integration via the 1,320 metres of Yangtze frontage for efficient logistics. 

This expansion cements Yangzijiang's position at the forefront of tomorrow's maritime needs.

Riding the Waves : Q2 2025 Earnings

Yangzijiang delivered a masterclass in resilience this quarter :

Net Profit jumped 37% year on year to RMB 4.18 billion as steel costs eased and dual fuel containerships rolled off the slipways.

Shipbuilding gross margins hit 35%, comfortably above consensus.

The shipping arm showed early signs of recovery with freight rates climbing in July. 

These excellent results reflect rigorous cost control, a premium delivery mix and perfect market timing. 

Analysts Hoist the Sails Higher 

Brokerages have all raised their targets :

DBS upgraded full year EPS by double digits, expecting 35% plus margins into 1H 2026.

CGS lifted its price target to SGD 3.90, foreseeing yields above 6%.

UOB Kay Hian sees 20% to 25% upside, pointing to order backlog conversion and an LNG charter in early 2026.

When seasoned analysts rush to upgrade, it confirms that Yangzijiang's performance isn't just luck.  It is backed  by its solid fundamentals. 

A Fortress of Orders into 2030

Visibility is an investor's best friend.  Yangzijiang's order backlog reads like an anchor :

USD 23.2 billion in confirmed orders across 236 vessels through 2030.

74% of orders dedicated to clean energy ships, reinforcing leadership in green shipping. 

USD 2 billion in advanced talks for 2028 to 2029 slots, preserving price discipline and build sequence. 

Few peers can match this 4 year revenue runway. 

Dividends as Anchors 

For me, dividends are love letters from management :

Last year's dividend was SGD 0.12 with yield at 4.1%.  Analysts expect SGD 0.15 for 2025, pushing dividend yield toward 6%.

A 35% to 40% payout ratio balances generous rewards with reinvestment in growth. 

Every year that dividend lands like personal "thank you" reinvested to compound conviction. 

Spin-off Milestones : From Shipyard to Finance to Maritime 

My journey began when Yangzijiang spun off its financial arm, and I received Yangzijiang Financial (YZJF) shares free at a 1 to 1 ratio.  Profits surged 28% in 1H 2025 to SGD 137.7 million and today, my position in YZJF feels like a badge of trust.  This week YZJF will spin off its Maritime division on a 1 for 1 basis, granting me yet another tranche of free stock.  It is a cascade of value, each spin off a vote of confidence in Yangzijiang's vision. 

Riding High: Share Performance and My Returns 

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding's shares are up 6.5% in the last 5 trading days and have risen 20.6% in just 1 month.   

Yangzijiang Financial is up 3.8% and 13.5% in just 1 month.  It has skyrocketed 165% year todate. 

From a 52 week  low of SG1.80 to a high of SGD 3.32, my 118% on Yangzijiang Shipbuilding reflects my faith in this phenomenonal shipbuilding company in delivering compounding growth.  Now  as I prepare to receive the Maritime Division shares for free, I see not just another ticket but in the next chapter of Yangzijiang. 

Concluding Thoughts 

Investing in Yangzijiang Shipbuilding and riding its spin offs through Yangzijiang Financial and now its Maritime Division, has been an act of faith richly rewarded. 

From a small riverside cooperative in 1956 to  a green vessel pioneer carving out multiple listed entities, every milestone of Yangzijiang has mirrored my conviction driven philosophy. 

At 118% up and with new free shares on the horizon, this voyage is far from over.  It is just charting its most exciting leg yet.
