A prime example of this is with the reason behind the latest spike in price for NIO stock.Already trending since the start of the month, NIO stock made a double-digit bolt higher on July 24. If you just saw the stock chart, and had seen no headlines, you would assume that the EV maker had released some promising fiscal results/delivery numbers.However, that wasn’t what drove its most recent rally. Rather, it was on news that, while positive for the company’s efforts to become a leading brand in its home market, likely won’t have an impact in time to prevent big investor disappointment that is likely to arrive later this year. Let’s dive in, and see why.NIO Stock and its Latest RallySo, what was it that sent Nio stock up by nearly 11% on July 24?As InvestorPlace’s Eddie Pan reported, a key driver was news from China’s National Development and Reform Commission regarding its plans to provide support to private investments in various sectors of the Chinese economy.According to Pan, this announcement bodes well for the EV maker’s efforts to build out its battery swap station network. One way this EV contender is trying to set itself apart from the competition is by offering customers the ability to swap out batteries in their Nio vehicles.The ability to swap instead of having to recharge batteries has its advantages. It’s a workaround for the limited range issue, one of the main pain points with EVs.Swappable batteries also enable Nio to offer its vehicles at a lower price. In short, it’s not illogical for investors to view both developments as positives.The issue, however, is whether they are overreacting to these headlines. Taking a look at other factors, this is arguably the case.Not Enough Time to Prevent Lackluster ResultsIt’s safe to say I am a skeptic of NIO stock. I’m skeptical that Nio is another Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA). I also believe that this fledgling EV firm has questionable chances of becoming a big player in its home market, much less globally. That said, Mr. Market is taking a much different stance.Although the stock trades well below the lofty price levels hit during the 2021 “EV stock bubble,” investors have again been bidding it up. The prevailing view is that a much-anticipated re-acceleration of revenue growth will occur later this year.However, my take could soon finally be vindicated.The company may ramp up production/introducing new vehicle models, but competition is rising.As I have argued before, in order to increase demand in tandem with its increased output, Nio may need to aggressively slash prices, leading to higher-than-expected losses.The above developments could eventually strengthen the appeal of Nio’s swappable battery feature, helping to boost demand without hurting margins.However, this will probably not happen in time to prevent lackluster results in the near-term. Disappointment with results during this quarter and the next could shift sentiment for NIO back to bearish.Bottom Line: Sell Into Strength/AvoidWhile maintaining a downbeat view on NIO, I’ll admit that my bear case is not ironclad. Even as I believe that factors that could work in the company’s favor, like its battery swap efforts, will only start to pay off down the road.Recent reports point to Chinese EV sales growth staying strong, despite China’s sluggish post-Covid recovery, and this year’s reductions to purchase subsidies provided by the Chinese government.Delivery data for the current month could also suggest that the growth re-acceleration is emerging.Yet while Nio could prove skeptics such as myself wrong in the coming months, much of the upside from this happening may already be factored into its stock price. Downside risk may be high, if Nio skeptics are proven correct.With this, if you currently own NIO stock, take advantage of the battery swap rally, and sell into strength. However, much of it is rising bullishness for the EV industry at-large.Strong monthly delivery numbers from several EV makers, plus news perceived to be bullish for EV sales growth in China, has further convinced investors that Nio will come along for the ride. Even so, I’m not convinced.Instead, while conceding that the current sentiment for Nio could hold in the near-term, the most relevant facts still point to disappointment and big losses ahead for this EV stock.NIO Stock: Latest Delivery Numbers Mixed at BestChances are you’ve seen recent headlines touting better-than-expected delivery numbers for major EV makers, and not only Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA).Several high-profile U.S. and Chinese EV contenders have also reported solid results as of late. Nio, though, is not in that category.Sure, NIO stock did move higher after the release of Nio’s latest monthly delivery update, but was it for the right reasons?The market focused only on the positive aspects of the update, and none on the negative aspects. For instance, during June, the company delivered a total of 10,707 vehicles.Compared to Nio’s May delivery results (6,155 vehicles), this appeared to be a sign of massive growth re-acceleration.Yet while sales were up on a sequential (month-over-month) basis, on a year-over-year basis, sales were down by around 17%. In short, far from “crushing it” as its rivals may be right now, for the prior month, Nio’s delivery numbers were mixed at best.Still, I don’t assume investors will quickly come to the same conclusion. However, the view that sequential sales growth, plus strong overall demand growth for EVs, bodes well for the company can only prevail for so long.The Bear Case Keeps StrengtheningPreviously, I have discussed a possible bearish scenario for NIO stock between now and year’s end. There are two ways the company could underwhelm investors. Even if just one happen, it may lead to a big reversal for shares.First, high competition from Tesla and local-based EV companies could hinder sales growth this quarter and next quarter.Second, Nio’s move to slash vehicle prices, which is the result of the intensifying competition, will negatively affect vehicle margins. In turn, resulting in greater-than-expected operating losses.Market confidence in the bull case may be growing right now. However, recently additional factors have emerged pointing to the bear case ultimately playing out. Tesla has once again cut prices for its vehicles in China.A prominent China-based EV maker, BYD Company Limited (OTCMKTS:BYDDF), is gearing up to launch a vehicle that could leave Tesla and Nio’s respective premium midsize crossover offerings in the dust.That’s not all. Along with the fact competitive pressures keep rising, the further threat of a price war has not gone away. As InvestorPlace’s Eddie Pan reported July 11, Chinese antitrust law has squashed an attempt to implement a “price war truce.”Don’t End Up Stuck Holding the BagSince June, a bullish stance has paid off for NIO investors. However, as some of them decide to take profit, don’t be tempted to buy what they are selling. You could end up stuck holding the bag.Monthly deliveries may not rise meaningfully over the next six months. The ongoing price war could do even greater damage to Nio’s margins. If one or both things play out, expect the stock to experience a big reversal.Yes, there have been some developments recently that could change the story in the long run. Tesla Semi Program manager Dan Priestley detailed that the three motors are used to create a smooth driving experience that will be unique for a Class 8 truck. The company has said previously the Semi can achieve better than 2 kWh-per-mile efficiency, which works out to about $70K in fuel savings per year depending on their cost of electricity.</p><h3>RBC Capital Downgrades DoorDash Due to Tough 2023 Setup</h3><p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/DASH\">DoorDash</a> fell in early trading on Friday after RBC Capital Markets cut its rating on the food delivery specialist to Sector Perform from Outperform.</p><p>Analyst Brad Erickson and team said they are not playing themacro card with the downgrade but pointed to a combination of evidence of slowing core order growth, limited EBITDA downside support and channel checks that indicated Uber is competing better in Manhattan as a proxy for overall performance.</p><h3>Marvell Stock Sinks as Earnings Fall Short</h3><p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MRVL\">Marvell Technology</a> shares were sinking 6% premarket after the data-center semiconductor firm’s earnings and outlook disappointed Wall Street. The company said makers of storage equipment are reducing their stockpiles of chips, hurting its near-term results.</p><p>Marvell reported October quarter non-GAAP net income of $491.5 million, or 57 cents a share. Analysts polled by FactSet had forecast adjusted earnings of 59 cents a share.
