Unlike Luckin Coffee, which emphasizes its \"technological attributes\" and highlights the operating data commonly used by internet companies such as DAU and MAU, Nayuki Tea is generally touting its offline retail attributes. In other words, the company has not deliberately created a \"strong concept\" to improve its pricing power.

The business model and cost structure of the offline tea beverage industry are highly similar to those of coffee chains. We compared Nayuki's 2020 tea financial data with Starbucks' 2020 fiscal year financial data, as shown in the chart below.

Compared to Starbucks, Nayuki's tea gross profit margin is insufficient, but considering factors such as scale and development stage, we believe its performance is still in a relatively ideal range.

On the one hand, the offline tea industry as a whole is still in the early to mid-stages of development, and oligopolies with market pricing power have not yet emerged. Nayuki's tea is not yet ready to face a brutal price war. On the other hand, we must also recognize that although the milk tea industry has expanded rapidly with the support of capital since the Luckin Coffee myth was exposed, we have not seen a brutal price war so far. Looking at Nayuki's historical data, the low market expense ratio and high gross profit show that the industry requires companies to balance the relationship between growth and losses. The industry's development is much more rational and restrained than that of the coffee industry that Luckin has disrupted.

With the above in mind, let's look at indicators such as store operating costs. Nayuki Tea and Starbucks are very similar. Although the two companies operate in different industries, their business logic is basically the same.

So if that's the case, why did Nayuki Tea still incur losses in 2020? Since the company's business model and logic are extremely similar to Starbucks, the latter should be used as a reference in market capitalization judgment. The potential for business scale growth and profitability should be considered. The high revenue accompanied by high losses commonly used by internet companies is not suitable for Nayuki Tea.

In the analysis of this problem, we introduce the following ideas.

The costs listed in the chart above are the main consumption points for offline store operations. In addition, there are many minor expenses that have not been indicated. From the perspective of revenue model, the biggest difference between Nayuki's tea and Starbucks is that it accounts for a particularly large proportion of takeout orders, while Starbucks still mainly provides dine-in or in-store service worldwide.

This has led to a significant increase in Nayuki's tea delivery costs over the past three years, accounting for more than 5 percentage points of revenue. In other words, without this expenditure, Nayuki's operating profit margin would be close to that of Starbucks.

For Nayuki Tea, after the increase in food delivery orders (orders placed through mini-programs and third-party food delivery platforms account for more than 20%), delivery companies need to pay delivery fees. In order not to affect consumers' purchasing impulse, they have adopted the same price for online and offline sales, and have subsidized shipping costs through various means (such as discounts on purchases over a certain amount, such as the free shipping day every Monday). With the volume of food delivery orders expanding so much, and Starbucks' offline operating profit margin being less than 7%, it will undoubtedly dilute Nayuki Tea's profitability.

How should this be solved?

We think about it from two perspectives: external and internal.

Externally, in 2020, offline physical retail was severely impacted by the pandemic (the growth of national social consumption is still at a low level), which seriously affected the rental level of offline shops (in 2020, both the central government and governments at all levels called for rent reduction, subsidies and concessions), which can also be verified in Nayuki's tea prospectus.

In the chart above, rents in cities at all levels are showing a downward trend. Considering that the contract period for companies to sign offline shops is generally 3-5 years, that is to say:

1. The average rent in 2020 needed to be used to offset the previously high rental costs after the price reduction that year. Although it decreased somewhat that year, it did not fully reflect the actual extent of the decrease in shop rents.

2. In 2020, the company carried out a significant store expansion, with new first-tier and second-tier cities being important highlights. It is foreseeable that the pressure on average rent will be partially alleviated compared to before, especially in non-first-tier cities where rent concessions may be greater (as shown in the chart above).

Previously, when considering Starbucks, in addition to its brand and supply chain advantages, we often overlooked its bargaining power when negotiating with commercial real estate companies. Generally, commercial real estate projects (especially in new first-tier and lower-tier cities) will give priority to Starbucks when attracting investment and give it policy preferential treatment (bans on similar businesses and rent discounts). This gives Starbucks a clear comparative advantage when comparing similar companies.

From an internal and external perspective, although the Luckin Coffee model is highly controversial, it seems to make sense in one point: as users become increasingly reliant on food delivery, it can actually increase the proportion of food delivery stores, reduce the proportion of rent, expand online revenue, and adjust the operating cost structure.

Therefore, we have compiled a list of transaction volumes between Nayuki's Tea mini-program and its own App and food delivery platforms, as shown in the image below.

Over the past three years, the proportion of in-store cashier payments (mainly dine-in) has declined significantly, while the proportion of payments completed through mini-programs and food delivery platforms has increased. Even excluding the fact that users still make purchases in-store through mini-programs, we can still see that the proportion of food delivery consumption is expanding.

This trend is also consistent with the increase in the proportion of food delivery service fees mentioned earlier. However, from the perspective of business operations, does this mean that companies can shrink their store area, focus on food delivery, reduce offline costs, and offset the increase in delivery costs?

In the prospectus, we saw that Nayuki Tea stated that it would increase the layout of PRO stores. In 2021 and 2021, it plans to open 300-350 stores in first-tier and new first-tier cities, of which 70% will be PRO stores. If the achievements we analyzed above are maintained in cost control and business expansion, it is conceivable that the composition of the company's operating expenses will change significantly in the future, and it is very likely to reduce the pressure of losses.

Therefore, this requires companies to strengthen the effectiveness of online traffic generation during operations. Whether this will increase online marketing expenses or service expenditures on third-party food delivery platforms remains to be seen, and this is what we need to focus on observing next.

So when is the profit cycle we expect for this company?

If we consider the personnel, rent, utilities, depreciation and amortization of the store operators as fixed expenses, and the cost of materials as variable costs, we calculate that, based on the store's operating conditions in 2020, the store's break-even point was around 25,000 yuan per day, which was higher than this level in 2018-2019. If we exclude the financing costs and other expenses at that time, it is roughly within the profitable range for store operations.

However, judging from the trend, the daily sales volume of a single store has been declining, from more than 30,000 yuan in 2018 to just over 20,000 yuan. This is due to both the impact of the epidemic as explained by the company, and the lack of strict control over efficiency in expansion, which diluted the sales capacity of a single store.

In the chart above, we can see that over the past three years, the daily sales of individual stores in cities at different levels have been converging, and in 2020 they were almost at the same level. We previously thought that this was an inevitable result of the impact of conservative consumption under the pandemic. However, after seeing 2019, we are more certain that this may be a trend. For milk tea, which is loved by young people, users in first- and second-tier cities are becoming more and more accepting of prices and products.

As we discussed earlier, in terms of rent levels, new first-tier and second-tier cities have a relatively obvious advantage over first-tier cities. In addition, there are differences in personnel salary costs. In other words, if the proportion of stores in non-first-tier cities can be expanded, the break-even point of 25,000 yuan in daily sales can theoretically be reduced to around 23,000 yuan, thus alleviating profit pressure.

To summarize our conclusions in this section:

Firstly, this is a company with a revenue and cost structure very similar to Starbucks, and its valuation should also refer to the Starbucks model;

Secondly, increasing the number of PRO stores and focusing on the proportion of stores in non-first-tier cities may be an important path to profitability. After securing the Series A round in 2017, it has been listed in Hong Kong for more than three years. The founders' shares have been diluted relatively little, and it can also raise funds in the capital market through share issuance and convertible bonds to maintain expansion.

Next, let's talk about some \"pessimistic\" views on Nayuki's tea.

Following Nayuki's IPO, news broke of Heytea's latest financing round, along with brands such as Gongcha and Lelecha. We can say with certainty that due to the industry's high gross profit margins and relatively certain growth potential, this category has become a hot topic for capital pursuit. We can also say with certainty that the industry will continue to have many shocking financing news in the future.

Strong capital involvement has always been a double-edged sword. On the one hand, capital does give startups the impetus to accelerate industry market education, but on the other hand, it can also quickly transform an industry from a blue ocean into a red ocean. A typical example is that companies have limited premium power in the terminal market and insufficient negotiation skills with suppliers, which will dilute the profitability of individual companies. Moreover, due to the same industry model, high-quality offline stores are often concentrated in certain areas, which is very likely to drive up store rents. We have seen this kind of thing all too often in the past few years. To be honest, I doubt whether Nayuki Tea can avoid it.

This is similar to the coffee chain industry. Although Starbucks is the number one coffee chain, it has never lacked challengers over the years. From COSTA overseas to Luckin Coffee in the Chinese market, the strong competitive pressure is optimistic about training the team and improving resilience. But pessimistically, it makes users extremely price-sensitive, the company has strong substitutability, and profit margins are compressed to a low level.

my country's capital market has now reached a relatively mature stage, with Starbucks making money while lying down. What if Nayuki Tea isn't prepared for the next day? In other words, although we have conducted an ideal business analysis of the company above, we must add a premise: the industry is still under great uncertainty. The company has gained a financing advantage by going public earlier than others, but the stock price is the anchor for the subsequent financing costs. Doing a good job in managing the stock price, obtaining convenient and cheap financing, and supporting its expansion are the top priorities. However, under the uncertainty (and also due to the overall adjustment factor in Hong Kong stocks), we must say that Nayuki Tea's market capitalization management is under considerable pressure.

So what is the company's market capitalization center level?

We will still take Starbucks as an example, using the data from fiscal year 2020 as a reference. Its market value has now reached a price-to-sales ratio of nearly 6 times, and its static P/E exceeds 138 times.

Due to the pandemic, Starbucks' revenue remained relatively flat in 2020, but its profits declined significantly (stores in Europe and the United States were greatly affected). Taking 2019 data as an example, the price-to-sales ratio is now over 5 times, while the static P/E is around 40 times. Due to the expansion of the US stock market under the global monetary easing, Starbucks' stock price is now almost at its highest point again.

When we valued Nayuki Tea, we referenced a price-to-sales ratio of 6 and 2020 revenue, which is around HK$22 billion. However, considering that the company will increase store expansion after financing and its total revenue will be in a rapid growth range, we gave it a certain premium, and carefully considered that it would be around HK$25 billion.

Let's use p/E to verify this. With a market capitalization of HK$25 billion and a p/E multiplied by 25, the operating profit would be HK$10, and the profit per store would be around HK$4,000. Based on the above analysis of the profit p equilibrium point, we believe that although this goal is difficult, it is not impossible to achieve.

In addition, it should be emphasized that when dynamically observing companies, we will still use profitability as an important reference to adjust the valuation level. The above market capitalization valuation is also based on relatively ideal operations. If the balance between profitability and expansion is properly balanced, we will also adjust the model appropriately. However, in short, we should treat Nayuki Tea as a retail company and not be misled by the concept of the Internet. Nayuki Tea is not an Internet company, and its valuation cannot follow the same path as Haidilao.
","source":"lsy1583724996352","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Is Nayuki's tea Starbucks or Luckin Coffee?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nIs Nayuki's tea Starbucks or Luckin Coffee?\n
\n
\n
\n 科技说2021-07-08 16:46\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
We start with corporate value analysis to explore whether Nayuki Tea has investment value and potential.

Let's first talk about our intuitive view of Nayuki Tea's prospectus.

Firstly, this is a company with a revenue and cost structure very similar to Starbucks, and its valuation should also refer to the Starbucks model;

\n
\n\n\n
source:<a On July 4, merchants and e-commerce platforms across the country began removing Vitasoy products from their shelves and returning them to suppliers. On July 5, Vitasoy International's stock price fell by more than 14.8% at one point, hitting a new low since September last year, with its market capitalization falling below HK$27 billion and RMB 2.3 billion evaporating throughout the day... For this beverage company with annual revenue of HK$7.52 billion and at least HK$5.01 billion contributed by mainland China, inappropriate words and actions are causing it to lose 66% of its largest consumer market. Even so, Vitasoy's top management is still unwilling to recognize the facts. All indications suggest that this is not only a major mistake by Vitasoy in crisis management, but also a two-faced approach by its corporate leaders in the face of both facts and national righteousness. The leader's judgment will dominate the direction of the company. If they can listen to both sides and restore the judgment of a normal person, instead of burying their heads in the sand and resisting the facts with paranoia and arrogance, perhaps there will be no farce like the Vitasoy incident. Today, we will focus on the \"four destructive behaviors\" that stubborn leaders can lead companies to permanent ruin and the ways to solve them, hoping that no other company will repeat Vitasoy's foolish mistakes. Many times, people would rather ignore mistakes than face the facts, and so do leaders.

Sydney Finkstein, a professor of strategy and leadership at Dartmouth College's Tucker School of Business, has long dedicated himself to researching what constitutes a \"good company\" and a \"smart manager.\" After conducting in-depth research on 40 companies that have suffered major failures, he mentioned in his book \"The Mother of Success\" that there are four destructive behaviors that can unknowingly lead a company into an abyss.

These four behavioral patterns manifest as follows: the personal cognitive errors of business leaders prevent the company from seeing reality clearly; Incorrect attitudes allow errors to continue to replace truth; There was a problem in the communication system handling potentially emergency information; The characteristics of leadership prevent business leaders from correcting their mistakes.

He also stated that leaders may have taken these actions long before the obvious danger signals emerged, and that although the companies appear normal on the surface, their internal mechanisms have begun to disintegrate.

These four behaviors have a significant negative impact on businesses, but they can be summarized in a simple sentence: leaders are often unwilling to face the facts. It is precisely because they are unwilling to face the truth that executives choose to retreat into their own illusions, or refuse to admit their mistakes and resist the facts with arrogance.

The disastrous consequences of \"ostrich behavior\"

As written in \"The Mother of Success,\" sometimes dangerous signs may have already appeared, and leaders are often still unwilling to face the truth. Although they knew that such \"ostrich behavior\" could have devastating consequences for the company, facing the truth and facts and admitting mistakes directly damaged their authority as leaders.

If we explore the origins of this idea, we can trace it back to the industrial age. At that time, the company was still a purely linear organizational structure and quite static. Leaders with knowledge and authority stood at the top of the organizational pyramid, and the entire organization had a strict hierarchy of commands that were conveyed and flowed from top to bottom. In this architecture, the company's leader is an omniscient leader who has all the answers, a benchmark and a belief, someone to be looked up to and admired.

Although organizational structures have gradually changed with social development, with matrix structures and flat organizations beginning to appear in more emerging companies, especially internet companies, and more and more new generations believing in the concepts of \"working for themselves,\" \"challenging authority,\" and \"speaking up if they are unhappy,\" in more cases, this idea that \"leaders have authority and a forward-looking perspective that transcends subordinates\" still influences many people.

Sometimes, leaders prefer to believe that their authority is never challenged, that they are well-informed about the dynamics within the company, and that they have the ability to anticipate future changes in a timely manner, even if in some cases this feeling is just wishful thinking on the part of the leader. Behind this lies the deeply ingrained implantation of leadership authority in people's minds. Leaders must become role models and the perfect leader who can create miracles.

To change this mindset, leaders need to understand that no one is omniscient, no one is always right, no one can know the answers to all difficulties, and no one can accurately predict everything that may happen in the company's development.

Leaders may make significant mistakes, have cognitive limitations, or even be intermittently \"abnormal,\" and there may be disharmonious factors in the organization they lead. These are all normal.

Therefore, for an ideal organizational structure, a company is like a system with the ability to improve and adapt itself. In this system, although no one can be omniscient or control everything, the system can improve the entire system through continuous communication and feedback between subordinates and colleagues, making everyone more adaptable.

As a leader, one's responsibilities go beyond simply formulating strategies or providing advice and guidance to subordinates in the traditional understanding. It also includes properly handling various opinions within the organization, which may be positive praise or negative evaluation. Leaders need to collect, coordinate, and provide feedback.

Michael Beal, professor emeritus at Harvard Business School, has been studying internal feedback paths. Bill believes that there are \"silent killers\" in tissues that, like plaque in arteries, block or distort the meaningful flow of information in tissues, thereby damaging their health.

Bill stated, \"I've found that one of the main reasons executives are stubborn is that they may not know what to do about the truth. They're just thinking, 'I know what I want to do, and I want to get it done as soon as possible.' Leaders don't know how to systematically collect different information and feedback within the organization, and they don't find it effective.\" For leaders, there's an even simpler method: listening to the leader alone will automatically eliminate all discordant voices.

Three Ways to Face the Truth

In general, in enterprises, to ensure that the organization's information feedback channels are not distorted or blocked, leaders should avoid the arrogant leadership mentality left over from the industrial era, listen widely, and recognize the facts and truth. In response, leaders can take the following three approaches.

Emphasis on clarity

Bill stated that one of the most common silent killers in organizations is the lack of a clear understanding of strategy, values, and priorities. He points out that while these things are clearly defined for senior managers and the organization's strategic direction is quite obvious, they are not so clear to grassroots employees, strategic partners, or other key stakeholders. Therefore, in addition to the general strategic direction, leaders can also provide more specific, step-by-step directions as a supplement to the strategy.

In addition, leaders should provide subordinates with a relaxed and comfortable environment where they can exchange opinions about the company and offer personal suggestions. Bill points out that most people want to do their jobs well and know what difficulties they encounter in practice. However, they often don't get the right opportunities to give feedback to their leaders, to tell them that certain tasks are meaningless or conflict with the priorities of other tasks.

If a leader believes that the company they are leading has done a good enough job in this regard and is very clear about the execution and implementation of the company's strategy, then the leader can rethink what else employee dissatisfaction and complaints can include. This may not be strong dissatisfaction, but may also be subtle and tactful opinions. If the leader listens fully to and provides feedback on these opinions, it will help improve employee efficiency.

Eliminate absolute discourse power

Although there will always be leadership and subordinate relationships in an organization, leaders should pay attention to creating some informal occasions where people can break free from the constraints of job rank and speak freely as more equal individuals. From a human perspective, people tend to obey the highest-ranking or highest-paid individuals in an organization, which gives those individuals the natural attribute of \"absolute voice.\"

To eliminate people's compliance with those in higher positions, we can refer to the after-action Review method, which includes four components:

What should theoretically happen?

What actually happened?

If there is a next time, what are the same steps we will take?

What different steps will we take if there is a next time?

In hindsight, the focus is on the motivations behind people's actions and whether those motivations led to the initially desired outcome. Through this assessment method, the individual's performance in the event is downplayed; the most important thing is not blame or punishment, but rather a review of the organization's practices and how to improve next time.

If a company blindly adopts an accountability system, employees will panic after problems arise due to fear of being blamed, or they will be severely punished and unable to hold their heads high in front of their colleagues. This is not conducive to the feedback and flow of information within the organization.

Rather than establishing an accountability system, companies should first adopt rational review and analysis. This will give employees more motivation and courage to provide feedback on past mistakes and difficulties encountered, tell leaders what unexpected obstacles they encountered, why they took such actions in the first place, and calmly analyze why the results deviated from the original intention.

Don't let mistakes be \"stigmatized\"

It is important to provide employees with an environment where they feel psychologically safe, where colleagues are tolerant enough of mistakes, and where they see them as opportunities to learn and improve, rather than stigmatizing punishments. \"Bad news improved my efficiency,\" said Jimmy Dunn, managing director of a Wall Street investment bank, when discussing how to handle the chaotic and busy financial trading business.

Jimmy Dunne explained that being able to spot problems quickly helped him keep his banking operations running smoothly. On July 4, merchants and e-commerce platforms across the country began removing Vitasoy products from their shelves and returning them to suppliers.

Jimmy Dunne also said that he would never fire anyone for any honest mistake, because financial markets are constantly changing and no one can be perfect and never make mistakes. Therefore, for executives in the financial industry, in order to better protect clients' assets, instead of assigning impossible tasks such as \"always making the right decisions,\" it is better to ask subordinates to correct their mistakes quickly when they make them, thereby safeguarding the company's reputation.

Making mistakes is never a shameful thing, whether for leaders or employees. ,"news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"00345":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":4048,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":155044644,"gmtCreate":1625365869588,"gmtModify":1703740806595,"author":{"id":"3586943117143889","authorId":"3586943117143889","name":"PinnPinn","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/54c24f171e376ae26854a896f694ed75","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3586943117143889","idStr":"3586943117143889"},"themes":[],"title":"","htmlText":"666","listText":"666","text":"666","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/155044644","repostId":"1198720542","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1198720542","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1625361204,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1198720542?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-07-04 Reports indicate that the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) is open to SPACs, and the regulator has drafted a framework for relevant consultation documents, with public consultation expected as early as July. Analysts point out that having more financing channels for enterprises is beneficial to the long-term development of Hong Kong's financial market, but it is emphasized that the issue of protecting investors should also be taken into account.

Market participants pointed out that the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission will depend on the market reaction to the consultation results before deciding whether to implement a SPAC. Even if SPACs are eventually approved, it is expected that the initial stage will only be limited to professional investors, and the entire market may not be opened up at once to protect general investors.

Helping to attract \"unicorns\" to list in Hong Kong

A spokesperson for the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) responded that the HKEX regularly reviews and studies solutions to improve Hong Kong's listing system, which requires balancing factors such as protecting investor interests, market quality, and attractiveness. The feasibility of introducing a Hong Kong SPAC framework is currently being studied, and market opinions will be consulted in due course. The China Securities Regulatory Commission declined to comment.

The market expects that the introduction of SPACs will give enterprises more choices and outlets, thereby increasing the competitiveness of Hong Kong's capital market. Some accountants have stated that because the valuations of companies in the startup or new economy sectors are difficult to define, it is difficult to reach a consensus with investors during traditional listings. SPACs, on the other hand, already have corresponding pricing during mergers and acquisitions, making it easier for both parties to \"bury their money.\" They believe that introducing the SPAC mechanism will particularly help attract new economy companies to list in Hong Kong, and even international \"unicorn\" companies, i.e., startups with a valuation of over US$1 billion.

However, he admitted that Hong Kong's capital market is different from that of the United States. The United States is based on disclosure, while Hong Kong focuses on investor protection and emphasizes that the entire new SPAC mechanism must implement the \"Hong Kong version\". When consulting, it is also necessary for regulators to clearly explain to the market the difference between the mechanism and traditional \"beer shells\" to prevent the outside world from thinking that SPACs are beneficial to legitimate \"beer shells\", and to propose more measures to protect investors.

The US has sparked a wave of proposals to strengthen regulation.

SPACs have emerged in the United States, with 248 SPACs going public last year. The boom continued into the first quarter of this year, with more than 300 SPACs going public, attracting the attention of other overseas markets to this lucrative business.

One of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange competitorsSingapore ExchangeThe public consultation on the SPAC main board listing rules was completed at the end of April; The London Stock Exchange has also proposed changes to its listing rules in an effort to attract more SPACs to list there. In Asia alone, only South Korea and Malaysia currently permit SPAC listings, so Hong Kong's intention to introduce SPACs is an inevitable trend.

However, regulatory concerns immediately arose behind the craze. The United States is preparing to tighten regulations on SPACs and has already launched investor education efforts for SPACs. Reports indicate that the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) is open to SPACs, and the regulator has drafted a framework for relevant consultation documents, with public consultation expected as early as July.

U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Gary Gensler has indicated his desire to examine whether the time for disclosing publicly traded company holdings can be shortened, and also believes that disclosure of the supporters behind SPACs should be strengthened to improve protection for retail investors.

SPACs are typically sponsored by funds, celebrities, wealthy individuals, entrepreneurs, etc., who first invest in establishing a \"Blank Check Company\" with no actual business, i.e., a \"shell Company,\" before seeking investors to complete the IPO and raise funds.
