15th,AmazonIn his final letter to shareholders as CEO, founder Jeff Bezos stated that Amazon will continue to create value for shareholders and employees, and that the company will do a better job of taking care of its employees. In February of this year, Bezos announced that he would resign as CEO in the third quarter and become executive chairman.

In addition, Bezos stated that Amazon will strive to curb climate change and encourage employees not to become \"ordinary people\" but to respect human originality and uniqueness.

In the letter, Bezos stated:

I know that some shareholders use the money they earn from investing in Amazon to go to college, while others use it for emergencies, rent, vacations, entrepreneurship, charity, and so on. I am proud of the wealth we create for our shareholders. This is important; this wealth has improved their lives. But I also know one thing: This is not yet the largest part of the value we create.

If you want to succeed in your career (and indeed in life), you must create more than you consume. Your goal should be to create value for everyone you come in contact with. Any company that cannot create value for the people it touches, even if it seems successful on the surface, will not have a long future. It is on the way to being eliminated.

Remember, stock prices have nothing to do with the past. They are predictions of \"future cash flow returning to the present\". The stock market has its own expectations.

If you read some news reports, you might think that we don't care about our employees. In these reports, our employees are sometimes accused of being desperate souls and treated as...RobotTreatment. That's not accurate. They are mature and thoughtful people who can choose where to work. When we surveyed fulfillment center employees, 94% said they would recommend a friend to work at Amazon.

The truth is, the large team of thousands of people leading Amazon's operations has always cared deeply about our hourly workers, and we take pride in the work environment we create. We are also proud that Amazon creates jobs not only for computer scientists and people with advanced degrees, but also for those who have never had this advantage.

Two and a half years ago, when we set a $15 minimum wage for hourly workers, we did so because we wanted to be ahead of the curve in terms of wages, not follow the crowd, because we thought it was the right thing to do.

We now know more clearly that smart action to address climate change will not only prevent bad things from happening, but will also improve our economic efficiency, help drive technological change, and reduce risks. In conclusion, these can lead to more and better jobs, healthier and happier children, more productive workers, and a more prosperous future.

We all know that uniqueness (originality) is extremely valuable. We are all taught to \"be yourself\". What I really ask of you is to embrace and realistically recognize how much effort it takes to maintain this uniqueness. This universe wants you to be an ordinary person and is trying its best to attract you; please don't let it become a reality.

You have to pay a price for being different, and it's worth it. The fairy tale version of \"be yourself\" is that once you let your uniqueness shine, all the pain will disappear. Of course, this statement is misleading. Being yourself is worth it, but don't expect it to be easy or free. You must constantly invest your energy.

To all of you: Be kind, be unique, create more than you consume, and never let the universe blend you into your surroundings. It is still Day 1.

The following is the full text of Bezos's letter to shareholders:

To Amazon Shareholders:

In Amazon's first letter to shareholders in 1997, I talked about how I wanted to establish a \"permanent franchise,\" that is, to redefine what it means to \"serve customers\" by unleashing the power of the Internet. As I mentioned at the time, Amazon had grown from 158 employees to 614, and our user accounts had exceeded 1.5 million. We just went public, and our share price, adjusted for stock splits, is $1.50 per share. I wrote: It was the first day.

We've come a long way since then, and we're working harder than ever to serve and delight our users. Last year, we employed 500,000 people, and now we have a total of 1.3 million employees worldwide. We have over 200 million Prime members worldwide. More than 1.9 million small and medium-sized businesses sell on Amazon, accounting for nearly 60% of our total sales. Users have connected more than 100 million smart home devices to Alexa. Amazon Web Services (AWS) serves millions of users and had an annual revenue turnover rate of $5 million as of 2020. In 1997, we hadn't invented Prime, Marketplace, Alexa, or AWS. Nobody thought about these things at all, and their birth was not predestined. For each product, we took great risks and invested a lot of wisdom and sweat.

Along the way, we have created $1.6 trillion in wealth for our shareholders. Who are they? Of course, my Amazon shares made me rich. However, more than seven-eighths of the shares, equivalent to $1.4 trillion in wealth, are owned by others. Who are they? It was a pension fund, a college, a 401(K) retirement benefit plan, and Mary and Larry who unexpectedly sent me the following letter as I sat down to write this shareholder letter:

I keep hearing similar stories.

More is created than consumed

If you want to succeed in your career (and indeed in life), you must create more than you consume. Your goal should be to create value for everyone you come in contact with. Any company that cannot create value for the people it touches, even if it seems successful on the surface, will not have a long future. It is on the way to being eliminated.

Remember, stock prices have nothing to do with the past. They are predictions of \"future cash flow returning to the present\". The stock market has its own expectations.I want to change the subject a little and talk about the past. How much value did we create for our shareholders in 2020? This is a relatively easy question to answer, because the accounting system was set up to answer this question. In 2020, Amazon's net revenue was $21.3 billion. If Amazon were not a public company with thousands of shareholders, but instead a sole proprietorship owned by one person, this is the money a single owner could make in 2020.

What about the employees? Because we can focus on compensation expenses, this is also an easy-to-answer value creation question. The company's expenses are the employees' income. In 2020, Amazon employees earned $80 billion, plus $11 billion in benefits and various payroll taxes, for a total of $91 billion.

What about third-party sellers? Our internal team (the Sales Partner Partnership Services team) is designed to answer this question. They estimate that third-party sellers will earn between $25 billion and $39 billion in profits from selling on Amazon in 2020. Conservatively speaking, I'll calculate it at $25 billion.

On the customer side, we have to divide it into consumer customers and AWS customers.

Let's talk about consumers first. We offer low prices, a wide selection, and fast delivery, but let's assume we ignore all of that for this expectation and focus on one thing: we save our customers time.

On Amazon, customers complete 28% of their purchases in just 3 minutes or less, and half of their purchases are completed within 15 minutes. Going to a physical store to buy things requires going through a series of processes: driving, parking, finding things on the shelves, queuing to pay, finding your car, and then driving home. Studies have shown that it usually takes about an hour to go shopping in a physical store. Assuming a typical Amazon purchase takes only 15 minutes and saves customers several trips to physical stores per week, this could save more than 75 hours over a year. This is very important. It's the beginning of the 21st century, and everyone is very busy.

From this, we can get a number. First, based on a conservative estimate, the value of the time saved is set at $10 per hour. 75 hours multiplied by $10/hour, and then subtracting the cost of Prime, creates $630 in value for each Prime member. We have 200 million Prime members, which is equivalent to creating $126 billion in value in 2020.

Assessing AWS customers is difficult because each customer has a very different workload. However, let's still calculate it, but the error may be quite large. The direct cost improvements from cloud operations vary from on-premises operations, but a reasonable estimate is 30%. Of AWS's $45 billion in revenue for the full year of 2020, this 30% translates to $19 billion in customer value created. The difficulty in this assessment is that direct cost reduction is the smallest part of the benefits that migrating to the cloud brings to customers. An even bigger benefit is that it increases the speed of software development, which can significantly improve customer competitiveness and revenue. We don't have a reasonable way to estimate this part of customer value, except that it almost certainly outweighs the direct cost savings.Conservatively speaking, I would say this is the same and count AWS's customer value creation last year at $38 billion.

Combining AWS and consumers, the total value of customers in 2020 will reach $164 billion.

To summarize:

Shareholders $21 billion

Employees$91 billion

Third-party sellers $25 billion

Customers $164 billion

Total $301 billion

If each group has a profit and loss statement representing their interactions with Amazon, then the numbers above are the \"bottom line\" of these profit and loss statements (the bottom line refers to net profit). These numbers explain why employees work for us, why sellers sell through us, and why customers buy from us. Therefore, we create value for them. This kind of value creation is not a \"zero-sum game\". It's not just about transferring money from one pocket to another. Invention and creation are the root of all true value creation, and the value created is the measure of innovation.

Of course, our relationship with these wholes, and the value we create, is not just about dollars and cents. Money doesn't tell the whole story. For example, our relationship with our shareholders is relatively simple. They invest and hold stocks for a period of their choosing. We also provide guidance to Shareholders on matters such as annual meetings and proper voting procedures. Even so, they can ignore these instructions and simply abandon their vote.

Our relationship with our employees is a very different example. We have processes they need to follow, and standards they need to meet. We need training and various certifications. Employees must come to work at the agreed time. We interact a lot with our employees. This is not just a matter of wages and benefits, but also involves all other details of the relationship.

Regarding this union election, I think we still need to do better for our employees. Although the vote was in our favor and we have a close direct relationship with our employees, I am clear that we need a better vision to create value for our employees, a vision to create value for our employees' success.

If you read some news reports, you might think that we don't care about our employees. In these reports, our employees are sometimes accused of being desperate souls and treated like robots. That's not accurate. They are mature and thoughtful people who can choose where to work. When we surveyed fulfillment center employees, 94% said they would recommend a friend to work at Amazon.

Our employees can use informal breaks during their shifts to stretch, get water, use the restroom, or talk to their manager, all without affecting their performance. These informal breaks complement their normal routine, which includes a 30-minute lunch and a 30-minute break.

We have not set unreasonable performance targets. Instead, we set achievable performance targets that take into account tenure and actual employee performance data. Performance is evaluated over a long period of time because we know that various factors can affect performance during any given week, day, or hour. If employees fail to meet performance targets over a period of time, their managers will talk to them and provide guidance.

Training is also extended to employees who perform well and are able to take on more responsibility. In fact, 82% of coaching is positive, provided to employees who meet or exceed expected performance standards. We laid off less than 2.6% of our employees because they were unable to perform their duties (in 2020, this percentage was even lower due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic).

The best employer on Earth and the safest workplace on Earth

The truth is, the large team of thousands of people leading Amazon's operations has always cared deeply about our hourly workers, and we take pride in the work environment we create. We are also proud that Amazon creates jobs not only for computer scientists and people with advanced degrees, but also for those who have never had this advantage.

Despite our achievements, I am well aware that we need a better vision to enable our employees to succeed. We have always wanted to be the \"most customer-centric\" company on Earth, and we will not change this goal, which is why we have reached this point. But I promise that we will add one more thing: we will be the best employer on Earth and the safest workplace on Earth.

In my incoming position as Executive Chairman, I will focus on new initiatives. I am an inventor, which is what I love most, what I am best at, and where I create the greatest value. I am excited to work with the passionate and large team in our operations department to help invent in this arena of \"the best employer on Earth and the safest workplace on Earth\". When it comes to details, we at Amazon are always flexible, but when it comes to vision, we are stubborn and ruthless. When we make up our minds to do something, we never fail, and we will never fail at this point.

Let's dive deeper into the security issue. For example, about 40% of workplace injuries at Amazon are related to musculoskeletal diseases (MSD), which are conditions such as sprains or strains that can be caused by repetitive exercise. MSD is common in the type of work we do and is more likely to occur during the first six months of an employee's onboarding. We need to invent solutions to reduce MSD for new employees, many of whom may be engaged in physical work for the first time.

Working Well is one such program, which we launched in 2020 to 859,000 employees across 350 locations in North America and Europe. We train a small group of employees there on body mechanics, proactive health, and safety. In addition to reducing workplace injuries, these concepts also have a positive impact on activities outside of daily work.

We are also developing new automated staffing schedules that use sophisticated algorithms to rotate employees between jobs using different tendon groups to reduce repetitive exercise and help protect employees from MSD risks. This new technology is at the heart of our job rotation program, which we will launch in 2021.

Our increased focus on early prevention of MSD has paid off. From 2019 to 2020, overall MSD decreased by 32%, and MSD caused by outside working hours decreased by more than half.

We employ 6,200 security professionals at Amazon. They use safety science to solve complex problems and establish new industry best practices. In 2021, we will invest more than $300 million in safety projects, including an initial $66 million to create technologies that help prevent collisions between forklifts and other types of industrial vehicles.

When we lead, others will follow. Two and a half years ago, when we set a $15 minimum wage for hourly workers, we did so because we wanted to be ahead of the curve in terms of wages, not follow the crowd, because we thought it was the right thing to do.A recent paper by economists at the University of California, Berkeley, and Brandeis University analyzes the impact of our decision to raise the minimum starting wage to $15 an hour. Their assessments are consistent with what we hear from employees, their families, and the communities in which they live.

We raised starting wages, benefiting not only our own employees but also other workers in the same community, thereby boosting local economies across the United States. Research shows that in the same labor market, our wage increases led to a 4.7% increase in the average hourly wage of other employers.

Our leadership work is not limited to this. If we want to be the best employer on Earth, we shouldn't be satisfied with 94% of our employees saying they would recommend a friend to work at Amazon; we must aim for 100%. We will do this over time by continuing to lead in salaries, benefits, skills upgrade opportunities, and other areas.

If any shareholders are worried that the best employers and safest workplaces on Earth might dilute our focus on the \"most customer-centric\" companies on Earth, then rest assured. Think about it this way: if we can operate two different businesses, consumer e-commerce and AWS, and operate them to the highest standards, we can certainly achieve both of these goals simultaneously. In fact, I believe they will reinforce each other.

Climate Commitment

In an early draft of this letter, I first stated my views on the climate section and gave some examples. These arguments and examples are intended to prove that human-caused climate change is real. But, frankly, I don't think we need to say that now. Because you don't have to say that photosynthesis is real, or that gravity is real, or that water at sea level boils at 100 degrees Celsius. These things are completely true, as is the reality of climate change.

Not long ago, most people thought that tackling climate change was a good thing; But they also believe this will come at a high cost and threaten jobs, competitiveness, and economic growth. We now know more clearly that smart action to address climate change will not only prevent bad things from happening, but will also improve our economic efficiency, help drive technological change, and reduce risks. In conclusion, these can lead to more and better jobs, healthier and happier children, more productive workers, and a more prosperous future.Of course, this does not mean that this will be an easy thing, it certainly will not be. The next decade will be a defining one, and the economy in 2030 will need to be very different from today, with Amazon planning to be at the heart of this change. We launched the Climate Pledge with Global Optimism in September 2019 because we want to help drive this positive revolution. We need to be part of a growing corporate team that understands the urgency and opportunities of the 21st century.

Now, less than two years later, 53 companies representing almost every sector of the economy have signed the Climate Pledge.Best Buy、IBMInfosys, Mercedes-Benz,MicrosoftSiemens, Verizon, and others have all signed commitments to achieve net-zero carbon in their global operations by 2040, 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. The commitment also requires them to regularly measure and report on greenhouse gas emissions; Implement a decarbonization strategy through genuine business transformation and innovation; And neutralize any remaining emissions through additional, quantifiable, real, permanent, and socially beneficial offsets. Credible, high-quality compensation is valuable, and we should retain it to compensate for economic activities where low-carbon alternatives do not exist.

Signatories to the Climate Pledge are making meaningful, practical and ambitious commitments. Uber aims to become a zero-emission platform in Canada, Europe, and the United States by 2030, and Henkel plans to use 100% renewable energy to produce electricity. Amazon is making progress toward our own goal of using 100% renewable energy by 2025, five years ahead of our initial 2030 goal. Amazon is the world's largest buyer of renewable energy companies. We have 62 utility-scale wind power andsolar energyThe project, as well as 125 solar rooftops, are being implemented and sorted into centers. These projects have a generating capacity of over 6.9 gigawatts, providing more than 20 million megawatt-hours of energy annually.

Transportation is an important part of Amazon's business operations and the most difficult part of our plan to achieve net zero carbon by 2040. To help drive the rapid development of the electric vehicle technology market and help all companies transition to greener technologies, we invested over $1 billion in Rivian and ordered 100,000 electric delivery vehicles. We also have partnerships with Mahindra in India and Mercedes-Benz in Europe.

These customized electric delivery vehicles from Rivian are already in operation and first hit the road in Los Angeles in February of this year. 10,000 new cars will be on the road as early as next year, and by 2030, all 100,000 cars will be on the road, reducing carbon emissions by millions of tons. An important reason we want companies to join the Climate Pledge is to send a signal to the market that companies should start inventing and developing new technologies that help improve climate change. Our purchase of 100,000 Rivian electric vans is a good example.

To further accelerate investment in new technologies needed to build a zero-carbon economy, we launched the Climate Pledge Fund last June. The investment plan, starting at $2 billion, invests in visionary companies and aims to facilitate the transition to a low-carbon economy. We have invested in innovative technology companies such as CarbonCure Technologies, Pachama, Redwood Materials, Rivian, Turntide Technologies, ZeroAvia, and Infinium.

In addition, I personally allocated $10 billion to help drive the systemic changes we need over the next decade. We will support top scientists, activists, NGOs, environmental justice organizations, and others dedicated to combating climate change and protecting the natural world. Late last year, I awarded my first round of grants to 16 organizations dedicated to innovation and mobile solutions. It will take collective action from large companies, small companies, global organizations, and individuals, and I am delighted to be part of this journey and optimistic that humanity can unite to address this challenge.

Differentiation is survival; the universe wants you to become an ordinary person.

This is my last annual shareholder letter as CEO of Amazon. I feel there is one last, extremely important thing I must tell everyone, and I hope everyone at Amazon will take it to heart.

The following is an excerpt from Richard Dawkins' book, The Blind Watch Maker. This is a basic fact about biology.

Avoiding death is something you must strive for. Let it do its own thing—this is what it looks like after death—and the body will often return to a state of equilibrium with its environment. If you measure indicators such as temperature, acidity, moisture, or the electrical potential within an organism, you will often find that it differs significantly from the corresponding measurements in the surrounding environment. For example, our bodies are usually hotter than the environment around us, and in cold climates, they must strive to maintain this difference. When we die, our bodies stop functioning, the temperature difference begins to disappear, and eventually our temperature is the same as our surroundings. Not all animals work so hard to avoid reaching equilibrium with the surrounding temperature, but all animals do something similar. For example, in arid places, plants and animals struggle to maintain fluid content in cells, which runs counter to the natural tendency for water to flow from cells to the dry outside world. If they fail, they will die. More broadly, if organisms do not actively stop it, they will eventually blend into their surroundings and cease to exist as organisms. This is what happens when they die. Although this passage is not a metaphor, it is still a wonderful article that is very relevant to Amazon. I would argue that it is relevant to all companies, all institutions, and the lives of each of us. In what ways is the universe attracting you to become normal? How much work does it take to maintain your uniqueness?

I know a happy couple who have a joke in their relationship. The husband would often pretend to look at his wife in pain and say to her, \"Can't you be a little more normal?\" They both smiled and laughed, and of course, the profound truth was that he liked her uniqueness. But at the same time, if we are a little more normal, things often become easier, which is also true.

This phenomenon occurs at many levels.

We all know that uniqueness (originality) is extremely valuable. We are all taught to \"be yourself\". What I really ask of you is to embrace and realistically recognize how much effort it takes to maintain this uniqueness. This universe wants you to be an ordinary person and tries every means to attract you. Don't let it become a reality.

This universe is always trying to make the Amazon more typical, to keep us in balance with our environment. This will require sustained efforts, but we can and must do better.

Here, as always, I enclose our 1997 shareholder letter. The letter concluded: \"We at Amazon thank our customers for their business and trust, for each other's hard work, and for the support and encouragement of our shareholders.\" This remains unchanged. I want to give special thanks to Andy Jassy for agreeing to serve as CEO. This is a difficult task and a great responsibility. Andy is incredibly talented, and his standards are the highest. I assure you, Andy will not let the universe turn us into ordinary people. He will gather the energy needed for the life that makes us different. This is not easy, but it is crucial. I also predict that this will be satisfying and often interesting. Thank you, Andy.

To all of you: Be kind, be unique, create more than you consume, and never let the universe blend you into your surroundings. It is still Day 1.

Jeff Bezos
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Bezos's last letter to shareholders: Work hard, don't become an \"ordinary person\"
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nBezos's last letter to shareholders: Work hard, don't become an \"ordinary person\"\n
\n
\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
\n
2021-04-16 19:13
\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Authors: Zeng Xinyi, Cao Zexi

Thursday, April 15th,AmazonIn his final letter to shareholders as CEO, founder Jeff Bezos stated that Amazon will continue to create value for shareholders and employees, and that the company will do a better job of taking care of its employees.

More is created than consumed

If you want to succeed in your career (and indeed in life), you must create more than you consume. Your goal should be to create value for everyone you come in contact with.

Jeff 1)。 ,"home_visible":1,"media_name":"老虎资讯综合","id":"102","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1618582356,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1138769769?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-16
