Gambling on Bitcoin, will Tesla's second-quarter profit be hit hard?

Why is "Stock God" Buffett questioned by shareholders?

The author of the article is so excited that his hands are shaking, and there are a lot of emotional typos in typing, sometimes a bit incoherent. The translator tries his best to restore the original flavor of the story and the author, and hope readers will accept the inconsistency. I've had the pleasure of working for Apple since 2003, and being at Apple during that very special time, particularly working with Steve on all sorts of things, I felt very happy.

And, I'm fairly confident that Steve sees me as a friend, not just a colleague he works with.

Looking back, I was lucky to be specifically introduced and then recruited by Apple.

I flew to Cupertino (where Apple is headquartered in California) for an interview, just after completing my PhD at MIT; I was very maverick at the time (the unflattering kind). I went to the interview because people around me told me that I must be crazy if I didn't even go to the interview. I made up my mind to go there and talk, and then turn down any Offer from Apple.

After visiting the beautiful buildings, this further convinced me that I would refuseAny Offer, because it is so to meCorporatizationAnd somehow feels veryHypocrisy。 I was taken to an interview with a vice president who asked me some very usual interview questions, and then in the middle of answering the questions I heard a door open and close, and then a voice behind me said:

\"We really still ask these stupid\" damn questions in interviews … what are the possible responses from candidates that would allow us to tell if they are completely stupid or completely smart? \"

I don't have to turn around.I know it's Steve who's talking.

He continued to walk around his desk and waved the Senior Vice President who was interviewing me away from his office. Then he sat down and silently read a piece of paper in his hand (I guess it was the interview question list that the vice president was going to ask me just now). He never looked at me or spoke to me.

He read on, occasionally laughing at what he read, shaking his head or calling anything he read useless.

After what seemed like forever, he threw the question sheet across the room and it actually hit a framed piece of art, which dropped loudly to the floor-Steve never bothered to look at the piece of art we might have badly damaged. He just stared at me, likeForeverJust as long. (Definitely a very awkward minute, actually really seemed like an eternity in this case.)

Then he asked:\"Who are you?\"I told him my resume was on the desk-and he said \"I didn't ask you that.\" (In the meantime, mind you, his eyes never took away from his harsh, burning gaze.)

I told him my name; Then he quickly replied, \"If I wanted to know your name, I'd ask what your name is … I'm asking who you are\" … \"You're not very good at interviewing, are you?\"

I said I was someone who came all the way to interview for a job I most likely wouldn't accept-but being asked over and over why I didn't interview was a pain, so I thought I'd go for an interview, turn the Offer down, and go home and get on with other things. Problem solved. Then I told Jobs that my only concern before I came was that it might be embarrassing to refuse a job if they offered me one. Then I thanked him for what he had just done and made it easy for me to say no, because he was such aArrogant bastard。

He looked at me puzzled for a few seconds, then asked puzzled, \"You knowWho am I\"Yes, right?\" I said yes. He said:\"You know I'mSteve Jobs”I nodded-he sat back in his chair (still confused) and then he smiled and told me, \"This office sucks, this vice president has no taste.\"

I actually agree that this guy really doesn't have a good taste.

He said, \"Well, I'm going for a walk every day now, and you seem smart enough not to stay through this interview for a job you're not going to take. And, today is really a pretty awesome day\" (yes, he really uses his old mantra, lol) \"Join me on the walk\". I'm a little dizzy: Jobs in front of me is simply the embodiment of all the mean comments I've heard about him before I came here. What a complete jerk. But I did want to go for a walk with him; I really don't understand why. But I kept up with him anyway.

We were walking and it was funny to me that no one of the people working there greeted him or nodded to him at all-honestly, most people seemed to take awkward turns as if they were all trying to avoid him.

Somehow, though he might never notice, because even during our small talk, he's the kind of him that even in a crowded hallway, somehow, being a big man, makes you feel like the only thing he cares about in the world is you; He gives you his absoluteGet absorbed。

It's very unique and he can often easily make you look as if you're not even in the physical space. And this unique feeling of intrusion into your existence is, in a way, a kind of complete rudeness.

Once we were outside in the open space, Steve's conversation suddenly changed-he was basically confused and asked me why I didn't want to come to work for him. He started counting almost childlike logic-he asked me \"assuming I wasn't rude and completely ruined your interview, would you still say no?I am a very annoying personThe facts of have nothing to do with your choice? \"I'm not right?\"

I said, \"Do you really know you're so rude?\" He said, \"Yes, IOf course I doI'm rude \"-\"I'm Steve, I'm usually rude\"(Like I asked a strange question)

Then he started selling me Apple-he told me all the stuff they did, but I couldn't have guessed that there were other \"great things\" (yes, he used that mantra too) and he told me all these things, crazy things. (He hasn't actually asked my name yet, by the way)

However, like the most excited kid in the world, he talked endlessly about Apple and their \"cool stuff\",It's all so sincere(At the same time, he said that I was a child, that I hadn't even worked before, and that if I didn't work for Apple, then I was a complete idiot.) The whole scene was crazy.

I kept wondering if this guy had been with me for so long missing some meeting or for sure he had to take care of things somewhere. Then he said he wanted to show me \"something\" and meet Johnny.

We walked into Jonny's little world, and he was very polite to me, and then gave me a clear lookSteve in super excited state(Jonny whispers that he really likes you.-I whispers that he doesn't even know my name, seriously, Jonny says then he really likes youYou), and he went back to work.

Finally, someone found Steve and said that a super important guest had been waiting for him in his office for 90 minutes. His face changed again and he said, \"IReallyMust go \"and then tell the person who found him to\" let him wait \".

Then he told me: \"Look, I promise it will be great … I can show you all this, but you can't digest it for a while … He said\" Give me a month at Apple and just leave if I'm wrong … I'll pay you 3 times your normal monthly salary, the company is here to provide you with an apartment and a car, and if I'm wrong, I'll pay for everything you want or anything to move things back and forth \".

I said, \"You don't even know my name, Steve.\"-Then he said my full nameHe knew all kinds of things about me, where and when I went to what school, my birthday-where I grew up.

Now I'm confused. extremely.

I asked him why he had made everything so awkward at the time, or had not told me anything before.

He said: \"Wouldn't that be more fun?”

I have to agree.Is more interesting。

Steve then said \"you're funny\" I asked him why and he told me \"you just have to be funny... things... people are mediocre\" and \"you're funny\".

Then he said, answer me, \"Come or not”。

I was completely confused haha and I said: \"OK, a month will be a month\".

He strode away and said, \"I'll see you tomorrow.\" I reminded him, \"It's Friday.\" He said, \"I know!\"

The door closed and Steve was gone.

I didn't know what to do because honestly, I didn't even know where I was in the building-I guess Steve hired me, but where did I go-who did I talk to? How do I explain the outrageous Offer he gave me?

I went back to the office where the interview started to find the VP who was kicked out. All the time trying to figure out what I was going to say, and then I realized I didn't even know what position he wanted me to do.

It probably took me 10 minutes to get to the vice president's office (I knew Steve was in what must be a serious meeting, so I couldn't ask him).

But when I got to that office-maybe it was only 7-9 minutes. Somehow, every crazy part of the Offer Steve gave me, specific to the tiniest detail, was somehow completely conveyed to that VP by magic.

There were about three people in that office making everything he promised me happen-someone called to say my driver's license had been photocopied, I heard someone on the phone talk about getting my apartment ready for me-and they asked if I could arrange for someone to open my apartment so that the movers could enter (I told them I didn't need so much … The girl looked at me and said, \"Look, Steve said he wanted you to stay here while you got everything moved … If he didn't finish what he wanted, I'd get into trouble\" (she almost explained Steve in a strange way)

I sat down to fill out the confidentiality agreement-and other paperwork-and I finally asked what exactly is my job or title? I was told that my position was \"Steve hired\" (basically, when I found the right position, they would make another title for me).

Everything promised was delivered instantly-apartment, car etc in 30 minutes, I got the keys-I received a map of the apartment and a map back to get back to Apple HQ (Infinite Loop 1). I was told not to be late-Steve hated being late.

I never returned to my apartment at MIT.

Before I returned to the east coast, 2 years passed, probably closer to 3.

Steve \"caught me\".

Sorry this is too long-doesn't really answer your question. But okay, I'm probably the only one who remembers it now after he's gone.

My obvious prejudice aside; What a great story.

When I first wrote this, I was laughing so hard that tears were running down my cheeks.

I'm still at Apple-I'm in a senior position right now. It's really the only company I've ever been with. I enjoyed it very much.

I only occasionally look back at Apple and Steve's experiences and, to some extent, what I've been involved in.

You have no idea.\n会不会有取代他的人,或者会不会有任何接近他的高度的人? \n你的朋友,永远","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"AAPL":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3857,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":110837957,"gmtCreate":1622437061079,"gmtModify":1704184422517,"author":{"id":"3579527905061704","authorId":"3579527905061704","name":"Ylychg","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/44bba94c2f5b09cfa3b014163f59f3ba","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579527905061704","authorIdStr":"3579527905061704"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"?","listText":"?","text":"?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":5,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/110837957","repostId":"2139285436","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2139285436","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1622435945,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2139285436?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-05-31 12:39","market":"sh","language":"zh","title":"Gambling on Bitcoin, will Tesla's second-quarter profit be hit hard?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2139285436","media":"金十数据","summary":"如果比特币价格跌到3万美元之下,特斯拉因此所受到的损失就已经足够将公司其他业务当季获得的利润一笔抹杀。 ,"content":"
At first, this investment looked more like reckless gambling, but now, when the virtual currency market is completely madness, this investment is even more unbearable. Earlier this year, Elon Musk willTeslaUS $1.5 billion in cash was invested in Bitcoin, and the world was shocked after the news came out. With the soaring price of virtual currency, the theoretical profit of Tesla's investment once exceeded US $1.3 billion. Even after the recent sharp drop in Bitcoin prices, the profit is still considerable.

However, this investment also has a huge negative impact, which many financial media and Wall Street analysts have not noticed. Under the special accounting rules used by Tesla for its investment in Bitcoin, the company is likely to be forced to include an \"impairment\" in its second-quarter earnings report-even if the investment as a whole still seems to be profitable.

If the price of Bitcoin can maintain the current level of about $38,000, the blow is not expected to be too big, but even so, in order to offset the book losses, Tesla needs to sell a considerable part of the Bitcoin it still eats, and this will naturally lead to another blow to Bitcoin prices. If the price of Bitcoin falls below $30,000, Tesla's losses will be enough to obliterate the profits made by the company's other businesses in the quarter.

More importantly, this impairment will once again remind investors that Musk actually invested a large sum of money in a super volatile asset, making the already risky Tesla stock even more risky. At the beginning, many investors thought that Musk's investment in Bitcoin was far-sighted, but now, people can only be more and more inclined to believe that Musk did a stupid thing and bought back a powder keg for the company himself.

Some observers have begun to notice the threat posed by Bitcoin. \"Many investors actually don't want Musk to get involved in virtual currency at all.\" Wedbush Securities analyst Daniel Ives commented, \"He should focus on vehicle production and delivery, global electric vehicle development trends, and how to deal with the chip shortage crisis. However, too much of his energy is now invested in Bitcoin.\"

What investors are particularly intolerable is that Musk's recent words and deeds on the issue of virtual currency have directly suppressed the value of the company's Bitcoin.\"It's like setting fire to your own house,\" he commented. \"Bitcoin has become a dark cloud on top of the whole Tesla story, and all the trouble is self-inflicted.\"

So why did Bitcoin's accounting rules cause Tesla to suffer a loss in the second quarter? If the price of Bitcoin falls severely, how big is the loss likely?

Once substantial paper profits

On February 8, Tesla disclosed in its annual report document submitted to the China Securities Regulatory Commission that Tesla had invested US $1.5 billion in Bitcoin. However, the real disclosure of detailed data, such as how much they bought, the average buying price, and how much they gained, is still in the first quarter financial report.

The report shows that as of March 31, Tesla owned a total of US $2.48 billion worth of Bitcoin. Based on the closing price of US $58,919 that day, it can be roughly calculated that the number held by Tesla is about 42,100. From early February to the end of March, Tesla sold 10% of its Bitcoin, worth US $268 million, while the purchase price was US $140 million, making a profit of US $128 million. These also mean that at its peak, Tesla once owned about 46,800 Bitcoin.

Adding up the Bitcoin on Tesla's books and the sold, the total value of their original holdings was once $2.748 billion. Based on the investment of US $1.5 billion, Tesla's gains and unrealized as of March 31 exceeded US $1.2 billion, which means that in eleven weeks, it has achieved a return on investment of more than 80%. Every Bitcoin they bought for an average of $32,000 had a price close to $59,000 at the end of the first quarter.

Accounting rules headaches

At that time, Bitcoin's gamble really made people feel like a great success. After all, in the first quarter, excluding the sales of carbon emission credits, Tesla's pre-tax profit by building and selling cars was only a mere US $15 million.

From this perspective, making the financial report look decent is almost entirely due to Bitcoin's investment. However, the financial report of the first quarter actually laid a foreshadowing that few people realized, which means that bigger problems may occur in the second quarter and more quarters in the future. Although Tesla has sold 10% of its Bitcoin investment and recorded considerable profits, they will still be forced to include the pre-tax profit \"impairment\" of $27 million, which means that the net income will be reduced from $128 million to $101 million.

Under the regulations of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB),Virtual currency should be regarded as \"intangible assets with indefinite maturity\"Under this principle, companies can have a variety of ways to dispose of virtual assets in their balance sheets.

One option is to compare the original purchase price to \"existing value\" or \"fair value\" at the end of each quarter. This means that if the price of Bitcoin is lower than the purchase price of any part of Bitcoin on the book at the end of the second quarter, that is, June 30, they must be included in \"impairment\", which is equivalent to the difference between the \"existing value\" and the \"fair market value\".

However, what Tesla uses is obviously not the \"end-of-quarter comparison\" method, but the method of impairment at any time during the quarter. Specifically, even if they do, once the market price of Bitcoin falls below the buying price of any part of the Bitcoin they hold at any point in the quarter, they must immediately record the impairment. At the end of the quarter, they reported all these impairments under the category of \"restructuring\".

This means that,If some of Tesla's Bitcoin were bought at a price of $35,000 after a sharp rise in early February, and on May 19, the price of Bitcoin fell to $31,000, they would have to make a $4,000 write-down for each Bitcoin, but after that, the price of Bitcoin rose back, and Tesla could not cancel these write-downs.

In other words, the impairment is permanent. In fact, even if Bitcoin's market price later rose sharply, far exceeding the cost paid by Tesla, they couldn't be included in the profit. Tesla can only cash in profits when it finally sells these Bitcoin. In bookkeeping, before these Bitcoin are sold, there are always only two values, either the initial investment cost or the \"existing value\" after impairment.

In short, when the market price of Bitcoin falls below the bid that Tesla once bought one or several pieces, the corresponding loss will be included in the book, but when the price rises above this \"existing value\" At that time, unless they sell Bitcoin, they can't count it as a gain.

In fact, in the first quarter, part of Tesla's Bitcoin once fell below the initial purchase price, resulting in an impairment of $27 million. However, the prices of most Bitcoin have soared, and Tesla was able to sell 10% of Bitcoin and achieve considerable profits.

This impairment may be substantial

In mid-May, Musk announced that considering Bitcoin's worrying energy consumption, they would stop Bitcoin's plan to pay for car purchases. For a time, many investors began to worry that Tesla would completely clear Bitcoin, forcing Musk to come out later to refute rumors that Tesla had no plans to sell the remaining Bitcoin. Therefore, it may be assumed that Tesla still has the remaining 90%, that is, 42,100 Bitcoin.

However, the total value of these Bitcoin is no longer the same as it was a few weeks ago. In mid-April, Bitcoin rose to an all-time high of $64,863. At that time, Bitcoin in Tesla's hands was once worth $2.73 billion, and unrealized gains reached about $1.36 billion, 150 million higher than at the end of the first quarter.

However, since then, the price of Bitcoin has fallen by more than 40%, and by noon on May 25, it has fallen to about $38,000, while Tesla's unrealized profit of $1.36 billion has also shrunk to $378 million.

According to the first quarter financial report, the \"existing value\" of Tesla's remaining Bitcoin is US $1.331 billion, which means that on average, each one is worth US $31,600. However, it should be pointed out that averaging prices are meaningless when calculating impairment. The important thing is that during this quarter, the lowest price that Bitcoin has ever appeared. Among the Bitcoin held by Tesla, any buying price higher than this price will be impaired.

So far, in the second quarter, the lowest point of Bitcoin's price appeared on May 19, which was US $30,682, while Tesla originally purchased Bitcoin from January 1 to February 8, with an average price of 31,600 US dollars, which means that a considerable part of it must be higher than US $30,682.

The simplest assumption can be made, dividing Tesla's 42,100 Bitcoin pieces into two, half of which were purchased for US $29,500 and the other half for US $33,700. In this case, that is more than half of the average price compared to the low point on May 19, which means a corresponding impairment of $65 million in the second quarter.

This number does seem small, but what's terrible is that it will embarrass the entire company and Musk-investors will feel that the once-seemingly successful investment in Bitcoin has actually lost money.

To avoid this from happening, Musk can only break his word and sell part of Bitcoin to fill the $65 million hole. Let's assume that the price of Bitcoin will remain at the level of $38,000, then Musk needs to sell about 10,000 pieces to fill the hole.

Considering that Musk has now become a super benchmark figure in the currency circle,A Tesla sale of this magnitude is sure to give the owner's heart beat, leading to another round of price dive. If Musk's sale causes Bitcoin's price to fall back to $25,000 in December of last year, then Tesla will experience a new impairment of $278 million. If it falls to $2, the impairment will reach $484 million-You know, not long ago, their theoretical profit was $1.3 billion.

Investors should remember that, in fact, if the sales of carbon emission credits, which Musk himself admitted would decline rapidly or even disappear, are deducted, Tesla actually suffered a pre-tax loss of US $127 million in the past four quarters. This means that even if Tesla can continue to rely on cars to achieve profitability this year and in the next few years, this already low profit amount will be easily erased by the drop in Bitcoin prices.
","source":"fenghuang_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Gambling on Bitcoin, will Tesla's second-quarter profit be hit hard?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nGambling on Bitcoin, will Tesla's second-quarter profit be hit hard?\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
At first, this investment looked more like reckless gambling, but now, when the virtual currency market is completely madness, this investment is even more unbearable.

\n
\n\n\n
,"news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"BRK.B":0.9,"BRK.A":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3215,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":107181404,"gmtCreate":1620452510708,"gmtModify":1704343978912,"author":{"id":"3579527905061704","authorId":"3579527905061704","name":"Ylychg","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/44bba94c2f5b09cfa3b014163f59f3ba","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579527905061704","authorIdStr":"3579527905061704"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"?","listText":"?","text":"?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/107181404","repostId":"2133339507","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":4026,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":108382388,"gmtCreate":1620000630044,"gmtModify":1704337067683,"author":{"id":"3579527905061704","authorId":"3579527905061704","name":"Ylychg","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/44bba94c2f5b09cfa3b014163f59f3ba","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579527905061704","authorIdStr":"3579527905061704"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"OK","listText":"OK","text":"OK","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":5,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/108382388","repostId":"1170908014","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1170908014","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"为用户提供金融资讯、行情、数据,旨在帮助投资者理解世界,做投资决策。","home_visible":1,"media_name":"老虎资讯综合","id":"102","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1618906754,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1170908014?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-20 16:19","market":"sh","language":"zh","title":"Reminder: A-shares are closed for three days on May Day, and Hong Kong and US stocks trade as usual","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1170908014","media":"老虎资讯综合","summary":"五一小长假即将要来临了,值得一提的是,今年五一劳动节继续连休五天。
The May Day holiday is coming soon.
