There's buzz around the news -- but what do stock splits really mean for investors, and why are they suddenly so trendy?Stock splits 101A stock split increases the number of a company's outstanding shares, while decreasing the value of each share at the same time. To picture how that works, imagine you're holding an apple. The whole apple represents the company's market value, equal to the number of outstanding shares times the share price.For our example, let's say that market value is $1 million. Slice that apple into 10 pieces and each piece represents $100,000 of the total value. But slice it into 20 pieces and what happens? You have 20 pieces, representing $50,000 each -- twice as many pieces, with each worth half as much.Image source: Getty Images.That's how stock splits work. A split increases the number of outstanding shares at a defined ratio and pushes the share price lower as a result. A 10-to-1 split, for example, pushes the share price lower by 90%. Even so, there's no change in the company's total value -- or its ability to generate profits.The lower share price isn't a factor for existing shareholders because their share count also reflects the change. At a 10-to-1 split, the shareholder who owns 100 shares pre-split would have 1,000 shares after the split.Why companies split their stockMathematically, stock splits should end up being a wash for the company and its shareholders -- but that's not always the case. Stock splits are newsworthy. They prompt headlines. They get people talking. And that buzz naturally generates increased interest in a stock. For that reason, share prices tend to tick up when a split is announced and again when it becomes effective.As noted, stock splits also reduce share prices -- and a lower price per share can drive demand. Not everyone can drop $2,000-plus on a single share of Amazon, for example. But $100 per share? Far more investors can stomach that price point. Once the company implements the split, increased demand can also push the stock price higher.Corporate leaders welcome these outcomes, especially when the market is struggling. That's one reason why stock splits are picking up right now. A split can create momentum. And momentum, even the temporary kind, is a nice change of pace in a down market.Making money off stock splitsYou could make money off stock splits, but it takes some luck. Your best chance at profiting is when you buy a stock before a split is announced. That requires either a crystal ball or some super-savvy guesswork. You could also buy after the announcement, but before the split becomes effective. Here, you're hoping to benefit from increased demand after the split happens.Alternatively, you could take a longer-term view on stock splits. The lower share price might make a stock more interesting than it was previously, for example. Say you don't own Alphabet, Amazon, or Tesla today. Would you consider them at much lower share prices? The split announcement could prompt you to evaluate whether those positions work for you as long-term holdings. If they are, you might buy after the splits -- to make money in a more reliable, conventional way.The big three stock splits of 2022Google's parent company, Alphabet, will split its stock 20-to-1, effective July 1. If you own Alphabet, your share count will multiply by 20 and the price of each share will drop accordingly.Amazon is also implementing a 20-to-1 split, effective June 3.The details of Tesla's stock split aren't set in stone just yet. The electric carmaker announced in March that it would ask shareholders to approve a split later this year.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"GOOGL":0.9,"TSLA":1,"GOOG":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2501,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9034697759,"gmtCreate":1647871273073,"gmtModify":1676534274045,"author":{"id":"3574921814752173","authorId":"3574921814752173","name":"loti","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8cca1ef20b63a0869e29787e48188b21","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574921814752173","authorIdStr":"3574921814752173"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":12,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9034697759","repostId":"1152783369","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1152783369","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1647869583,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1152783369?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-03-21 21:33","market":"us","language":"en","title":"U.S.Stocks Open Slightly Lower as Investors Await Powell Remarks","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1152783369","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"The S&P 500 was little changed Monday as U.S. stocks come off their best week in more than a year.Th","content":"<html><head></head><body><p>The S&P 500 was little changed Monday as U.S. stocks come off their best week in more than a year.</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed about 10 points, or 0.1%, as Boeing dropped about 5% after a China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737 passenger plane crashed. Yields are low, and most of the stocks paying higher yields come with more risk, as well. Risk is usually a no-go for income investors, especially retirees. These two dividend stocks are flying under the radar with healthy yields and stable cash flows.Newell BrandsNewell Brands (NASDAQ:NWL) is a great dividend stock that's being overlooked by the market. For most income investors, stability and cash flow are the two most important characteristics that a stock can have. That's exactly where this one shines.The name Newell Brands might not be familiar to many consumers, but the company has a portfolio absolutely full of iconic brands. Newell produces a vast array of consumer and commercial products under brand names that include Rubbermaid, Oster, Sunbeam, Crock Pot, Elmer's, Expo, Sharpie, Paper Mate, Coleman, Marmot, Graco, and Yankee Candle. Newell's products are sold on six continents, with 35% of its revenue coming from international sources. Its largest customer is Walmart (NYSE:WMT), which only accounts for 15% of sales.Newell is a diversified leader in consumer staples. It's unlikely that the market for its portfolio of products will change drastically in any short time frame. That creates long-term stability, and it also makes the business fairly resilient across economic cycles. It's never going to be an exciting high-growth stock, but that's not the priority for income investing.Newell Brands also passes the tests for dividend sustainability. Last year, the company's cash distributions to shareholders were around $400 million. Newell produced roughly $600 million in free cash flow during the period. That included an abnormally large $350 million in cash spent on an inventory buildup, which the company attributed to preparation for sales growth. With a dividend payout ratio below 70%, Newell seems to generate plenty of cash to support its dividend.It's also reasonable. The company's long-term debt-to-equity ratio is 1.2, which is completely manageable and normal for this sort of mature, diversified company. Newell reduced its financial leverage during 2021, and its net debt is down to $4.4 billion -- only $3 million of which is due in 2022. In a pinch, Newell has an additional $2 billion in liquidity available. This level of financial health suggests that the dividend won't be jeopardized if unexpected disruptions hit the business.Newell's 3.97% dividend yield is strong in today's market. The market could be favoring Dividend Aristocrats and other blue chips that have a more consistent history of dividend growth. Newell Brands hasn't increased its quarterly distribution since 2017. It still represents a great opportunity for immediate investment income, and there's certainly potential for those dividends to grow in the next few years.GreifGreif (NYSE:GEF) is an industrial packaging leader that makes products such as barrels, drums, corrugated boxes, bulk containers, bags, adhesives, and rolls. It also provides some packaging services, which contributes roughly 40% of the company's total revenue. Greif operates in 40 different countries all over the world, and its customers include businesses of all sizes.Greif's product line is just about completely commoditized, so the opportunity for growth is limited. What it lacks in growth opportunities, it makes up for in stability. This is a highly diversified company that provides basic products and services that will always be demanded by manufacturing, industrial, and basic material businesses. Greif needs to contend with competitors, but it fills a market niche with extreme staying power.Unlike Newell Brands, Grief's financial results are influenced more heavily by economic cycles. Its sales tend to be weak when its customers pull back on capital spending during recessions. However, cyclicality is a short-term issue. The long-term trend has been consistently positive.GEF Revenue (TTM) data by YChartsGreif is paying a 3% dividend yield right now, which is roughly $27 million in quarterly distributions to shareholders. The company is forecasting free cash flow around $400 million for the full year, so that should be more than enough to cover the dividend -- its payout ratio is under 30%. Greif reported a 35% increase in sales and gross margin last quarter, but earnings are expected to rise around 3% this year. There's room for the dividend to grow modestly over the next few years.Greif's long-term debt-to-equity ratio is around 1.4. Its short-term debt is around $170 million, which is manageable, based on the company's cash and projected cash flows. Most tech stocks have a rough ride in 2022, but that has been due to external factors as opposed to reasons specific to their business. This includes worries about inflation, interest rates, supply chain woes and war in Europe. Nvidia shareholders have been feeling the effect of these factors, with NVDA stock down 21% so far this year.However, Nvidia has also been hit by two headline-making incidents in quick succession. This is making some investors nervous about the stock’s future.The first issue was the collapse of Nvidia’s deal to buy Arm. After being hyped since 2020,the $66 billion deal was called off in the first week of February.Disappointing, sure, but as I have pointed out, it’s not going to materially impact the ability of this chipmaking giant to outperform. However, just as the Arm news was beginning to fade, Nvidia was in the headlines again.This time for a cyberattack. This one has many people concerned.With all of this in mind, should it make you wary of NVDA stock?Breakdown of Nvidia CyberattackOn Feb. 23, Nvidia detected a breach in its network. It appeared that hackers had stolen around 1TB of data from Nvidia servers, including employee credentials, proprietary code and 250GB of data specific to Nvidia’s RTX 3000 series graphics cards.At one point there was speculation the hack might be a state-sponsored attack by Russia, but that does not seem to be the case. There was also early speculation it was a ransomware attack, but that also appears to be untrue.The story has evolved as more details have emerged. In the most recent development, the hackers were trying to sell a software tool that unlocks the hashtag limiter on Nvidia’s RTX 3000 series graphics cards. The limiter slows the cards down when used to mine cryptocurrency. The asking price from the hackers? $1 million.Nvidia’s Reaction to the CyberattackNvidia has spoken to the press about the hack, claiming the data breach does not affect its customers or its ability to do business. A week after the hack was first noticed, a company spokesperson told CNN: “We are aware that the threat actor took employee credentials and some NVIDIA proprietary information from our systems and has begun leaking it online.”Law enforcement agencies have been notified and the company says it has tightened its security. Nvidia also says it is working with cybersecurity experts in its response to the attack.Bottom Line on NVDA StockThe hack experienced by Nvidia has been in the news for more than a week at this point. It’s obviously a serious event and with new details continuing to arrive, the situation is still developing.That being said, any damage done to Nvidia is likely to be short term. Even if the crypto-mining hashtag bypass sees widespread distribution, it affects a relatively small portion of Nvidia’s business. And the reality is the crypto miners still need the Nvidia video cards — all the bypass really does is allow them to buy consumer cards instead of the crypto-specific versions.That’s not great news for gamers who could face more competition to buy Nvidia video cards, but Nvidia still gets a sale either way.In terms of proprietary info like Nvidia’s DLSS code from the RTX 3000 cards, the company has very few graphics hardware competitors. Use of Nvidia technology would be fairly obvious and the company will be watching closely. As Extreme Tech points out: “it’s unlikely any serious programmer from either company would even glance at the forbidden fruit out of fear of legal retribution.”The hacking event hasn’t had any real impact on analyst views of NVDA stock. The investment analysts polled by CNN Money still have NVDArated as a consensus “Buy.” It still earns a stellar “A” in Portfolio Grader as well.If you’re worried about further developments making the Nvidia hacking seem worse, I don’t blame you for taking a wait and see approach with NVDA stock. However, I don’t see anything at this point that seems likely to impact NVDA’s promise of long-term growth. I continue to see the current weakness in Nvidia stock as a buying opportunity.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"NVDA":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3514,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9039126801,"gmtCreate":1645968356598,"gmtModify":1676534078269,"author":{"id":"3574921814752173","authorId":"3574921814752173","name":"loti","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8cca1ef20b63a0869e29787e48188b21","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574921814752173","authorIdStr":"3574921814752173"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9039126801","repostId":"2214135114","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2214135114","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1645920008,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2214135114?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-02-27 08:00","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Musk says Starlink active in Ukraine as Russian invasion disrupts internet","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2214135114","media":"Reuters","summary":"By Hyunjoo Jin SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 26 (Reuters) - SpaceX billionaire Elon Musk said on Saturday tha","content":"<html><body><p>By Hyunjoo Jin</p><p> SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 26 (Reuters) - SpaceX billionaire Elon Musk said on Saturday that the company's Starlink satellite broadband service is available in Ukraine and SpaceX is sending more terminals to the country, whose internet has been disrupted due to the Russian invasion. </p><p> \"Starlink service is now active in Ukraine. Here’s how its last stock split paid off for investors.Alphabet announced fourth-quarter revenue of $75.3 billion, up 32% year-over-year. The total came in ahead of a consensus estimate of $72.1 billion. The company also beat estimates for quarterly earnings per share with a total of $30.69 EPS. Search revenue hit $43.3 billion in the fourth quarter along with YouTube advertising revenue, which hit $8.6 billion.The strong results from Alphabet led to shares to go higher in the after-hours trading session Tuesday.Another reason for investor excitement was likely the announcement by the company of a stock split.Alphabet announced it would do a 20-for-1 stock split, paid out as a one-time special stock dividend for Class A, Class B and Class C shares of the company.If the stock split is approved, it will be effective with a record date of close of business on July 1, 2022. The dividend will be payable at the close of business on July 15, 2022.The 2014 Stock Split: The lastsplitdone by Alphabet was back in 2014 and is noted as one of the most controversial stock splits of the time.Alphabet announced a stock split in 2012, but instead of a traditional stock split that awards additional shares of the same stock, the split was set to create a new class of shares.The new class of shares (Class C) came with no voting power, something that led to a lawsuit by shareholders. The lawsuit was settled in 2013 with provisions put in place to reward shareholders if the gap between the value of Class A and Class C shares became too large.On March 27, 2014, Alphabet split its shares with every shareholder getting a share of Class C for each Class A share they owned.Share Performance: Shares of GOOG (Class C) traded at a price of $566.44 on March 27, 2014, after the split took place.A $1,000 investment at the time of the split could have purchased 1.77 shares of GOOG. The $1,000 investment would be worth $5,196.10 today based on a price of $2,935.65 at the time of writing.Investors who bought shares of GOOG at the time of the last Google stock split have enjoyed a return of 420%, or around 52.5% annually for the past eight years.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"GOOG":0.9,"GOOGL":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2985,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":863827424,"gmtCreate":1632376243668,"gmtModify":1676530767454,"author":{"id":"3574921814752173","authorId":"3574921814752173","name":"loti","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8cca1ef20b63a0869e29787e48188b21","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574921814752173","authorIdStr":"3574921814752173"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"For coins","listText":"For coins","text":"For coins","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/863827424","repostId":"2169656152","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3131,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"defaultTab":"following","isTTM":true}
