As news spread about the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, many Iranians took to the streets dressed in head-to-toe black to mourn his passing.
The state broadcaster IRNA aired footage of large crowds gathering in central Tehran's Imam Khomeini Square and Enghelab Square to pay tribute and to show their support to the political system. Mourners also gathered in cities including Isfahan, Tabriz and Borazjan. People held images of their late leader, waved the flag of the Islamic Republic and chanted in unison.
"We are all willing to become martyrs, but we are not willing to let the revolution go," a man in the city of Qazvin said in an interview broadcast on IRNA.
Not all Iranians were upset by the news. Many civilians in various parts of the country openly celebrated the death of Khamenei, hoping it could mark the start of Iran's transition to democracy.
