Meituan has issued a detailed statement debunking two widely circulated rumors, labeling both as completely false.
First, a viral post claimed that a delivery rider accepted an order worth over 700 yuan but received only 3 yuan in payment, alleging that the platform withheld more than 50 yuan tipped by the customer. Meituan clarified that after investigation, the rider in question had no recent orders totaling over 700 yuan, nor any orders worth hundreds of yuan. The company emphasized that any additional voluntary payments from customers, such as tips or gratuities, are fully and entirely transferred to the rider who completes the delivery. A review of the rider’s recent tip records showed five amounts: 0.5 yuan, 1 yuan, 2 yuan, 3 yuan, and 5 yuan. Not only were there no tips around 50 yuan, but all these gratuities had been fully transferred to the rider.
Meituan further stated that it examined all of the rider’s high-value orders since the beginning of the year, with delivery fees ranging from 14.5 yuan to 57.2 yuan, confirming that there was no instance of the rider receiving only 3 yuan.
The company stressed that every key detail in the viral video—false order value, false payout amount, and false income—was unsubstantiated upon verification. Therefore, the order described by the blogger simply does not exist. Meituan has reported the misinformation to relevant authorities and will take further measures in accordance with regulations and laws. The company firmly opposes any actions that harm delivery riders or the platform’s ecosystem for the sake of generating online traffic.
Second, another rumor suggested that every time a user checks delivery progress, the rider is notified, implying that the platform puts pressure on riders through such monitoring.
Meituan responded that this is also fabricated misinformation. In compliance with data security standards, users’ browsing behavior is neither recorded nor transmitted to riders. Viewing the delivery map or refreshing the order status page does not trigger any notification to the rider. Only when a user clicks the "Urge Delivery" button will a reminder be sent to the rider.
