Chongqing's Top 100 Private Enterprises in Sci-Tech Innovation Contribute 27.43% of City's R&D Expenditure

The Chongqing Federation of Industry and Commerce released the "2025 Chongqing Top 100 Private Enterprises Sci-Tech Innovation Index" on the 26th, revealing that in 2024, the total R&D expenditure of these top 100 private enterprises reached 22.96 billion yuan, marking a significant increase of 32.43% compared to the previous year. This substantial investment accounted for 27.43% of the total R&D expenditure across the entire city of Chongqing. The compilation of this prestigious list was based on the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce's 27th survey of large-scale private enterprises, incorporating publicly available corporate data for a comprehensive quantitative and qualitative evaluation. Topping the rankings were SERES Group Co., Ltd., Zongshen Industrial Group Co., Ltd., and Chongqing Zhifei Biological Products Co., Ltd.

Statistical data further indicated that the average R&D intensity—R&D spending as a percentage of revenue—for these top 100 innovative enterprises stood at 3.9% in 2024. This figure surpassed the city's overall average R&D intensity by a notable 1.3 percentage points. The collective workforce dedicated to research and development within these companies totaled 31,100 individuals, reflecting a robust 7.99% year-on-year growth. Furthermore, these leading enterprises have successfully attracted a high-caliber talent pool, including 40 national-level experts and 325 provincial-level talents, thereby establishing a solid foundation for sustained scientific and technological advancement.

An overwhelming majority, 97 out of the 100 listed companies, operate within the "33618" modern manufacturing cluster framework. The manufacturing sector itself was the most heavily represented, with 93 companies, which collectively invested a massive 21.279 billion yuan in R&D. The automotive manufacturing industry led all sectors in total R&D spending, allocating 8.933 billion yuan with an average intensity of 4.76%. It was followed closely by the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, which invested 3.467 billion yuan and demonstrated an even higher average R&D intensity of 7.27%.

Regarding the origin of key technologies, the list highlighted a strong trend towards self-reliance, with 83% of the ranked enterprises opting for independent development and research. A smaller proportion, 12%, pursued industry-university-research collaboration, while the remaining 5% acquired technology or talent through introduction or other methods. In the realm of collaborative innovation, 86% of these companies engaged in partnerships with universities and colleges. Additionally, 59% participated in establishing various innovative R&D organizations, such as industrial technology alliances, innovation consortia, joint laboratories, new-type R&D institutions, and co-developed academic disciplines.

In terms of building innovation platforms and bases, 28 enterprises on the list were involved in the development of national-level sci-tech innovation platforms. Moreover, 84 companies possessed a total of 232 provincially or ministry-level certified R&D institutions. The industries with the highest number of these certified institutions were pharmaceutical manufacturing, general equipment manufacturing, and the manufacturing of computers, communication equipment, and other electronic devices.

Financially, the入围 enterprises reported impressive results for 2024, achieving total operating revenue of 589.346 billion yuan, a surge of 35.72% over the previous year. Their total assets also grew substantially, reaching 560.123 billion yuan, up 32.07% year-on-year. A significant outcome of their innovation efforts was the industrialization of 13,400 valid patents, generating a combined output value of 285.152 billion yuan. The total export value of these companies amounted to 48.539 billion yuan, accounting for 20.34% of all exports by Chongqing's private enterprises and representing a 26.41% increase from the year before.

Concurrently, two supplementary lists were released: the "2025 Chongqing Top 50 Private Enterprises by R&D Investment" and the "2025 Chongqing Top 50 Private Enterprises by Invention Patents." SERES Group Co., Ltd., Zongshen Industrial Group Co., Ltd., and Immediate Consumer Finance Co., Ltd. secured the top three positions on the R&D investment ranking. The invention patents list was led by Vision Power Information Technology Co., Ltd., SERES Group Co., Ltd., and OPPO (Chongqing) Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd.
