Oil Prices Drop on Prospects of Swift Strait of Hormuz Reopening

Deep News07:40

Oil prices declined in early Asian trading due to the potential for a rapid reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime passage that typically handles one-fifth of the world's petroleum shipments.

The anticipated reopening is linked to a U.S.-Iran "memorandum of understanding" aimed at ending hostilities, which would see Tehran reopen the strait following the lifting of U.S. sanctions on its oil sales.

Analysts from ANZ Research noted in a report that this development "has sparked concerns about a significant influx of oil into the market."

However, the analysts added, "the risk of the agreement breaking down means there remains apprehension that shipowners will be reluctant to send tankers back into the Persian Gulf."

Front-month West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell 1.0% to $76.00 per barrel.
