SK Hynix and Seagate: Strong Storage Earnings, Different Market Reactions
AI infrastructure spending is showing up in storage companies’ financial results. $Seagate Technology PLC(STX)$ $SK hynix(SKHY)$
On October 28, SK Hynix released its third-quarter 2026 earnings. Seagate reported its fiscal first-quarter 2027 results after the U.S. market closed on October 27.
Both companies delivered strong operating results. Their shares reacted differently: reports captured SK Hynix’s Korean-listed shares rising nearly 3% during the session, while Seagate fell approximately 6% in after-hours trading.
What stands out to me is that demand for memory and mass-capacity storage is translating into revenue, profitability and cash flow. Investors now have to assess how long that growth can last—and how much is already reflected in share prices.
SK Hynix’s results show the earnings power of high-value memory products.
Third-quarter revenue reached KRW 104.62 trillion, up 328% year over year. Operating profit rose 632% to KRW 83.33 trillion, with an operating margin of approximately 80%.
According to LSEG SmartEstimates cited by CLS, revenue and operating profit expectations were KRW 98.34 trillion and KRW 76.72 trillion. Actual results exceeded those estimates by approximately 6.4% and 8.6%, respectively.
The accounting distinction matters: revenue and operating profit reached records, while net income of KRW 39.78 trillion declined 58% sequentially. The roughly 80% figure is the operating margin; the net margin was approximately 38%.
Server DDR5 sales increased significantly, HBM4 shipments expanded, and sales of 321-layer enterprise SSDs also grew. Management expects HBM4 to surpass HBM3E in both shipment volume and revenue in the fourth quarter.
I am particularly interested in the company’s demand visibility. SK Hynix has signed long-term agreements with 14 major customers, covering more than 50% of its production capacity for 2027 and 2028.
That provides a more concrete basis for expansion planning. However, those agreements include pricing mechanisms that reflect market conditions. Committed capacity does not automatically preserve today’s margins.
Management expects memory demand to exceed supply through 2030 and plans a significant increase in investment next year. Demand durability, expansion costs and additional industry supply remain important variables.
Seagate’s results show stronger cash generation from mass-capacity storage.
Seagate’s latest quarter was fiscal Q1 2027, ended October 2, 2026.

Seagate’s GAAP operating margin was 48.8%, and GAAP EPS was $7.59. The adjusted figures above use non-GAAP measures.
Its next-quarter guidance was also strong. Revenue is expected to reach $4.7 billion–$4.9 billion, with a $4.8 billion midpoint above the $4.56 billion consensus cited in the market report. Adjusted EPS guidance of $9.00–$9.40 has a $9.20 midpoint, above the $8.61 estimate.
Both current results and guidance exceeded those published expectations.
Investing.com interpreted the subsequent share-price decline as possible profit-taking following the stock’s strong recent performance. That is a market interpretation, rather than a definitive explanation of every trade.
For me, the reaction illustrates an important distinction: beating analyst estimates does not guarantee further share-price gains. Investors also assess the durability of growth and the expectations already embedded in the stock.
Seagate highlighted its heat-assisted magnetic recording technology, or HAMR, as a way to increase storage density while maintaining supply discipline. Product deliveries, costs and customer adoption will determine whether that roadmap continues to support margins and cash flow.
The two companies serve different parts of the storage stack.
HBM and DDR5 support fast access to data during computation. Enterprise SSDs serve workloads requiring faster reads and writes. Large-capacity HDDs serve data suited to economical, long-term storage.
As AI adoption expands, training datasets, backups and historical logs may create additional demand for retained and reusable data.
These earnings provide evidence of improving demand across memory and mass-capacity storage. Both companies also serve broader cloud and data-center markets, so their entire revenue growth should not be attributed to AI.
The use of cash is worth watching too.
SK Hynix plans approximately KRW 100 trillion in shareholder returns for 2026. Its KRW 20,000 third-quarter dividend per share includes a KRW 10,000 special dividend tied to gains from its Kioxia investment. That special payment should not be treated as a recurring quarterly dividend.
Seagate retired approximately $1.2 billion of debt during the quarter, returned $568 million through dividends and buybacks, and raised its quarterly dividend by approximately 3% to $0.76 per share.
My focus from here is on three questions:
-
Are product upgrades translating into sustained revenue and profit? Watch HBM4 at SK Hynix and HAMR product execution at Seagate.
-
How durable is demand? Track customer commitments, adoption and the effect of new supply on pricing.
-
Can strong margins keep producing free cash flow? Then assess how that cash is allocated among expansion, debt reduction and shareholder returns.
SK Hynix and Seagate have delivered strong operating results. The next investment question is how much durable earnings each business can retain—and what investors are paying for them.
Which part of AI storage interests you most?
-
A: HBM and server memory—SK Hynix and Micron
-
B: Mass-capacity HDDs—Seagate
-
C: Waiting for further order and cash-flow confirmation
-
D: Positive on demand, but more focused on valuation

AI infrastructure creates two opportunities. SK Hynix benefits from high-bandwidth memory and premium pricing. Seagate benefits from growing data-storage needs.
However, record earnings do not guarantee attractive valuations. SK Hynix faces rising capital expenditure and future supply expansion, while Seagate’s margins depend on pricing discipline and HAMR adoption.
The key question is whether profits remain sustainable as competitors expand capacity. Seagate’s $1.48 billion quarterly free cash flow is encouraging, while SK Hynix’s long-term customer agreements improve demand visibility.
My conclusion: AI storage is becoming a real earnings story, not merely a market narrative. I would prioritize sustainable cash flow, pricing power and valuation over headline growth. The best investment is not necessarily the fastest-growing company, but one that can defend profits when supply catches up.
