Hang Seng Tech Falls More Than 4%: Below 4,000, the Market Is Asking When AI Will Make Money

Hong Kong technology stocks accelerated their decline today.

As of 10:57 a.m. HKT, the Hang Seng TECH Index was down 4.3% at 3,823, after touching an intraday low of 3,819. The index had already fallen below 4,000 in the previous session, while all 30 constituents traded lower at one point today.

It would be easy to describe this as another decline in risk appetite.

The more important shift, however, is that investors are changing how they value Chinese technology companies:

Previously, announcing higher AI investment was enough to support valuations. Now the market wants to know when that spending will produce revenue and profit.

Tencent is the clearest example.

Its gaming, advertising and payments businesses have not suddenly collapsed. The concern is that spending on computing infrastructure, models, Yuanbao and AI features inside WeChat will hit expenses and depreciation before the related revenue becomes meaningful.

Some brokers have recently lowered Tencent’s near-term earnings forecasts. They are not necessarily bearish on AI itself—the concern is the timing gap between investment and monetization.

Tencent falling below HK$400 suggests that the market is recalculating this “return vacuum.” (Tencent Q3 preview)

$Alibaba(BABA)$Alibaba faces a similar challenge.

Alibaba Cloud and AI remain its most widely recognized growth engines, but the company is also investing heavily in instant retail, customer subsidies and computing capacity while facing intense e-commerce competition.

Investors are therefore looking beyond cloud revenue growth. They want to know whether AI cloud profits can offset higher spending in retail.

Baidu and Chinese AI-model companies face an even more direct test: Can better models produce paying users, enterprise contracts and inference revenue?

The fact that all Hang Seng TECH constituents traded lower does not mean their fundamentals are identical.

The index combines internet platforms, AI developers, semiconductors, consumer electronics, electric vehicles and battery companies. These businesses operate on very different earnings cycles.

CATL’s Hong Kong shares fell about 11% at one point yesterday after its results disappointed the market. Today, Tencent, Alibaba and AI stocks extended the broader decline.

Together, these moves suggest that investors are asking the same question across different industries:

The growth story may still be intact, but can profits keep up?

This also explains why saying “Hang Seng Tech has already fallen a lot” is not yet a complete bullish argument.

If earnings forecasts continue to decline, lower share prices do not automatically mean cheaper valuations. A stock can fall 20%, but if expected profits fall 15% at the same time, much less valuation pressure has actually been released.

Three signals may determine whether the index can produce a sustainable recovery:

1. Earnings downgrades need to stop.
Tencent, Alibaba and Meituan must show that cash generated by their core businesses can fund AI and new-business investments.

2. AI monetization needs to appear in financial results.
Investors will focus on cloud revenue, model usage, enterprise contracts and AI-driven advertising efficiency—not only model benchmarks or user numbers.

3. Market breadth needs to improve.
A rebound driven by one or two heavyweights may not last. A simultaneous recovery across internet, semiconductor and hardware stocks would provide a stronger signal.

Tiger’s View

The 4,000 level is primarily a psychological threshold.

The bigger development is that Hang Seng Tech is moving from an industry-story market into a company-by-company earnings test.

Continuing to invest in AI is not necessarily a mistake. However, major U.S. technology companies have already demonstrated that AI can support cloud revenue, advertising efficiency and enterprise demand. Hong Kong-listed companies now need to provide similar evidence.

The central question is no longer whether AI has a future.

It is whether AI revenue can grow quickly enough to offset rising capex, depreciation and competitive spending.

If upcoming earnings show that AI is beginning to generate meaningful incremental revenue, the current sell-off could become a valuation reset.

If earnings forecasts continue to fall, the market may need more time before low valuations provide genuine support.

I think the main issue is not whether Chinese tech companies have a future in AI, but how quickly they can turn investments into profits. $TENCENT(00700)$ and $Alibaba(09988)$ still have strong core businesses, but rising AI spending and competition could pressure earnings in the near term.

Personally, I will not rush to buy the dip just because the Hang Seng TECH Index has fallen below 4,000. Lower prices do not automatically mean better value if earnings forecasts are also declining. I will watch for improving cash flow, AI monetization and earnings stability before adding exposure.

That said, I remain open to opportunities if valuations become more attractive and fundamentals stabilize. I care more about earnings revisions and market breadth than the psychological 4,000 level. My approach is to accumulate gradually when the risk-reward ratio improves, rather than trying to predict the bottom.
