$Alphabet(GOOGL)$ $Alphabet(GOOG)$ Google and Terradot announced a megaton-scale climate project in Southern Brazil that combines methane avoidance in rice farming with permanent carbon dioxide removal. Google will purchase 1M tonnes of near-term methane impact by 2030 and 1M tonnes of carbon removal impact by 2040, making this its largest carbon removal purchase to date. It is also the largest ERW project ever undertaken, and the first project of any kind to combine near-term methane elimination with durable carbon removal at this scale.
Google's Head of Carbon Removal, Randy Spock, said the agreement was designed as a template rather than a one-off. He noted it's the largest carbon removal purchase Google has ever made, and by incorporating action on superpollutants, the impact is realized by 2030. He added that it provides a replicable path to making a real dent in climate change in both the near and long term, structured so any buyer, supplier, or government can follow the same approach.
