Semiconductors Rally Broadly — What Just Happened?

US three major indexes closed lower on Tuesday, with broad market under pressure. Clear divergence emerged within the semiconductor sector: $Intel(INTC)$ surged 9%, adding roughly $45.5 billion in market cap.$Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$ rose 5.9%, while$Qualcomm(QCOM)$, $Broadcom(AVGO)$ and $ASML Holding NV(ASML)$ gained around 3%.

Driven by the sector’s bullish sentiment, semiconductor ETFs moved higher too. $VanEck Semiconductor ETF(SMH)$ and $iShares Semiconductor ETF(SOXX)$climbed, and $Direxion Daily Semiconductors Bull 3x Shares(SOXL)$ jumped 5.1%.

On the flip side, $NVIDIA(NVDA)$ fell 2%, $Micron Technology(MU)$ dropped 1.6%, and $SanDisk Corp.(SNDK)$ pulled back after an initial spike. Huge divergence across chip names.

This structural semiconductor rally was ignited by multiple positive catalysts for Intel. Improved sentiment for the chip giant pulled capital back into the full hardware chain: server CPUs, advanced process nodes, AI chips and semiconductor equipment. That’s why Intel, AMD, Qualcomm and ASML all traded higher together.

1. Intel’s Stack of Catalysts Ignites Sector Sentiment

Intel is the core driver behind this rally. For one thing, the firm keeps rolling out CPU price hikes. It will raise prices for PC CPUs again in October. Tight supply for server chips and steady long-term contract orders make investors expect higher profits from these price increases.

Besides, High NA EUV lithography, co-developed by Intel and ASML, has achieved mass production. One million wafers have passed validation, and the 18A process node is advancing steadily. This breakthrough in advanced manufacturing boosted market confidence for the semiconductor fabrication segment.

Add in expectations of a major foundry client from Musk’s Terafab, plus a €5 billion plan to expand server CPU capacity. The outlook for AI server hardware warmed up sharply and lifted bullish sentiment across the whole sector.

2. Qualcomm Lands Massive AI Deal, Unlocks Second Growth Curve in Cloud

Amid the improving mood for semiconductor hardware, Qualcomm secured a landmark deal to further fuel sector optimism.

On Sep 8 local time, Qualcomm won a historic 10-year, $60B custom AI chip partnership with Amazon, paired with a $4B equity investment agreement. It marks Qualcomm’s official push into cloud AI servers, breaking its heavy reliance on mobile chips. This strongly supports its target of $5B data-center revenue by 2027.

3. ASML Books Advanced Equipment Orders, Equipment Cycle Picks Up

ASML is Intel’s key equipment partner for advanced chipmaking and benefits directly from this manufacturing rally.

High NA EUV has passed mass production verification. Samsung and TSMC have locked in orders for the new-generation tools. The global expansion cycle for advanced nodes looks solid, demand for lithography equipment stays strong, and the equipment leader rallied alongside the sector.
