Coffee Chats by Trade to Win — Event Highlights | 7 Sep
A. Market Outlook Sharing by James
James highlighted several new market developments, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s view that heavy AI capex could begin translating into stronger productivity and disinflationary benefits within the next six months. He also noted that S&P 500 short interest has recently risen above 3% of market cap, leaving room for some short covering.
US strategic-sector investments
James also discussed the Trump administration’s growing use of direct investments in strategic industries, from rare earths and semiconductors to quantum computing and frontier AI. The latest example is the Venezuela oil deal involving North American Blue Energy Partners, reinforcing the broader push to secure exposure to strategically important assets and supply chains.
Why today’s rate environment is different
Unlike 2021–2022, when US real interest rates were negative, real rates are now above 2%, implying that monetary conditions are already relatively tight. Any further rate hikes would add to borrowing costs and pressure corporate margins.
B. Options Strategies Sharing by Dr Kosh
Dr Kosh then took the discussion into options strategy, with a deep dive into the synthetic long, which is a combination of a long call and short put that creates a payoff similar to owning the underlying stock.
Inside the synthetic long
For a synthetic long setup, Dr Kosh highlighted several factors to look for in the underlying stock, including an established uptrend, positive short-term momentum and a near-term catalyst.
Managing the exit
Dr Kosh also explained that, when a synthetic long is closed, the short put is typically closed before the long call to remove assignment risk. This sequencing helps avoid leaving the investor with an uncovered short put.
C. Collaborative Strategy Building
In the discussion segment, participants worked in groups to develop two strategies: one for short-term tactical trading and one to express a longer-term strategic view.
Building on Dr Kosh’s sharing, they explored how synthetic longs could be applied to stocks they were bullish on, while considering whether the underlying had an established uptrend and positive upcoming catalysts such as earnings or product launches.
Participants also discussed suitable strike prices and expiries and shared their rationale with the rest of the room.
