Why Broadcom’s Next Earnings Must Prove That $16 Billion of AI Revenue Is Not the Peak

$Broadcom(AVGO)$ reports fiscal-third-quarter results after the September 2 close with a difficult expectations problem. Its preceding quarter produced extraordinary AI growth and cash flow, yet the stock remains far below its yearly high because investors are questioning customer concentration, custom-chip competition and how long hyperscaler spending can accelerate.

Broadcom reported on June 3 for the quarter ended May 3. Revenue increased 48% to $22.19 billion, adjusted EBITDA reached $15.24 billion and free cash flow was $10.26 billion. AI semiconductor revenue rose 143% to $10.8 billion. Management guided the third quarter to approximately $29.4 billion of revenue and said AI semiconductor revenue should exceed $16 billion, up more than 200%. Broadcom’s official second-quarter release supplies the results and guidance.

The bullish thesis is breadth. Broadcom sells custom accelerators, networking silicon and optical-connectivity products, while VMware supplies recurring infrastructure software. Custom chips let large cloud customers optimize cost and power for their own workloads. Networking demand grows with the accelerator count even when $NVIDIA(NVDA)$, $Marvell Technology(MRVL)$ or internally designed chips win the compute socket.

The bearish case is concentration and expectations. A handful of hyperscalers account for much of AI demand, and Google’s new Marvell relationship demonstrates that customers will develop alternative suppliers. Broadcom’s $29.4 billion guide already embeds dramatic growth. A mere beat may be insufficient if fourth-quarter AI guidance slows or VMware bookings reveal resistance to pricing and product changes.

AVGO gained 0.42% on August 31 to $370.34 after trading from $366.30 to $372.75 on 21.95 million shares, 85% of its 65-day average, and rose to $371.31 after hours. Support is $360–$366 and then $340–$350; resistance is $375–$385 and $400. The stock remains 23% below its $495 yearly high, so the downtrend is not repaired by one positive session.

Selling premium before September 2 risks an earnings gap. If AVGO reports AI revenue at or above $16 billion, provides credible sequential growth and holds $350 after the volatility contraction, an illustrative 30–45-day $325/$310 bull put spread could place risk below support. Exact strikes should target a 0.10–0.15 short-put delta. A close below $340 with falling AI estimates invalidates it.

The evidence leans neutral to moderately bullish. Growth and cash flow are exceptional, but the next guide must prove that custom-chip momentum can survive customer diversification. The view would be invalidated by AI revenue missing $16 billion, VMware weakness, margin compression or AVGO losing $340 while estimates decline.     Being 23% under the yearly high already gives AVGO a bit of valuation cushion. I care more about free cash flow holding up than whether one AI quarter looks peak-ish

    Customer concentration might be the shallow worry here. The deeper problem is custom-chip demand can still peak fast once hyperscaler spend stops accelerating.
