Why Nordson’s 35% Backlog Growth Supports Its Record-High Breakout

$Nordson(NDSN)$’s record quarter was notable not just for exceeding expectations, but for producing growth across industrial, medical and electronics markets simultaneously. A 35% increase in backlog gives the precision-equipment maker better forward visibility than a single quarterly earnings beat would provide.

Nordson released results after the August 19 market close for its fiscal third quarter ended July 31, then discussed them on August 20. Sales increased 10% to a record $818 million, including approximately 12% organic growth. Adjusted earnings rose 19% to a record $3.25 per share, while EBITDA reached $262 million, or 32% of sales. Nordson’s official results provide the segment and outlook data.

The bullish thesis is diversification around highly specialised dispensing, coating and inspection technologies. Industrial Precision Solutions sales grew 5%, Medical and Fluid Solutions increased 5%, and Advanced Technology Solutions surged 28%. The last division benefited from electronics dispensing and test-and-inspection demand, providing exposure to semiconductor and advanced-manufacturing investment without making chips itself.

Margins demonstrate the quality of the niche. Medical and Fluid Solutions generated a 38% EBITDA margin, Industrial Precision Solutions 35% and Advanced Technology Solutions 30%. Close customer integration and application expertise can create switching costs because a dispensing or inspection process is often critical to product yield and regulatory compliance.

Management raised expected full-year sales to $3.035–$3.075 billion and adjusted EPS to $11.80–$12.00. Backlog increased 35% from the prior year, supporting the forecast and indicating that demand extends beyond orders already shipped.

The bearish risks are valuation, order timing and cyclicality. Electronics capital spending can change rapidly, acquisitions and divestitures complicate comparisons, and a large backlog can be delayed rather than cancelled when customers become cautious. Nordson’s approximately 39% year-to-date advance before the report means strong execution is already expected.

Nordson closed August 20 near $334.70 after breaking above its prior record area around $315–$316. The breakout is constructive, but participation was not exceptionally heavy, so confirmation requires the shares to hold above approximately $315–$320. Near-term resistance is around $335–$340, followed by the psychologically important $350 area. A retreat that holds $315 would be normal consolidation; a close below $310 would suggest a failed breakout.

If NDSN consolidates above $315, a 30–45-day $310/$300 bull put spread places the short strike below the breakout zone and caps downside. Because Nordson options may be less liquid than megacap contracts, the structure is only sensible when bid–ask spreads are reasonable and the short leg is near 0.10–0.20 delta. A close below $310 invalidates the chart premise. Maximum loss equals the $10 width minus credit.

The evidence leans bullish because organic growth, segment margins, backlog and guidance all improved. The view would be invalidated by backlog converting more slowly, Advanced Technology orders weakening, margins falling or the stock failing below $310 alongside lower estimates.
