Why Klarna’s 23% Collapse Shows That Profitability Cannot Fully Offset Slower Spending
$Klarna Group plc(KLAR)$ reported rapid second-quarter growth and returned to profit, yet its shares collapsed because management reduced its annual revenue and transaction-volume forecasts. The reaction illustrates how investors value the future path of a fintech platform more heavily than a backward-looking earnings beat.
Klarna reported on August 18 for the quarter ended June 30. Gross merchandise volume increased 18% to $36.6 billion, revenue rose 27% to $1.04 billion and transaction-margin dollars advanced 42% to $446 million. Adjusted operating income reached $91 million, while the company generated net income of $9 million compared with a $53 million loss one year earlier. Klarna’s official second-quarter release provides the figures.
The bullish case is strongest in the United States, where transaction volume increased 27%. Klarna is expanding beyond pay-in-four instalments into debit cards, advertising, savings and longer-term lending. Greater transaction-margin growth than revenue growth also indicates improving unit economics, while credit-loss provisions declined slightly as a share of volume.
The bearish catalyst was guidance. Klarna reduced expected 2026 gross merchandise volume to $149–$151 billion from more than $155 billion and cut revenue guidance to $4.08–$4.16 billion from $4.34 billion. Weak retail conditions in Germany, its largest market, were the main reason. The company also announced leadership changes involving its chief financial and marketing officers. Reuters’ August 18 report provides the revised outlook and management context.
Buy-now-pay-later products are economically sensitive. Slower retail activity reduces volume, while weaker household finances can raise delinquencies. A banking licence and broader product range could lower funding costs and deepen customer relationships, but they also increase regulatory, compliance and balance-sheet complexity.
Klarna fell 22.9% to $15.06 on August 18 after trading between $15.02 and $19.76 on approximately 34.5 million shares. Closing at the session low is technically weak. The $15 area is immediate support, while $17 followed by the $19.50–$20 earnings-gap region is resistance. A durable recovery requires stabilising guidance rather than price action alone.
The evidence leans moderately bearish. Profitability and US expansion are encouraging, but weaker European demand and reduced guidance outweigh the quarter’s headline growth. The view would be invalidated by German spending recovering, US financial products accelerating and transaction-margin growth allowing management to restore the previous annual outlook.
