I’m watching $TJX Companies(TJX)$ most closely this week. With July retail sales falling 0.6%, I think the key question is whether consumers are cutting spending or simply becoming more selective and trading down. TJX’s discount-focused model could benefit if shoppers still want apparel and home goods but become less willing to pay full price.

What I’ll be watching is whether TJX can maintain strong traffic and merchandise margins without relying too heavily on promotions. If sales remain resilient while margins hold up, it would reinforce the idea that consumers are shifting toward value rather than abandoning spending altogether.

My final choice: TJX. I think it offers the clearest exposure to the consumer trade-down trend, especially if the U.S. consumer is cooling but not collapsing.

I added TJX already. If FCF stays clean and turns stay tight, that matters way more than promo noise — you watching gross margin or inventory turns closer?

  • 0.6% retail drop matters less if discount traffic stays positive. If comps are up and merchandise margin holds, that trade-down thesis probably sticks no?
