Why Sandisk’s 80% Margin Target Is Both a Breakthrough and a Warning

$SanDisk Corp.(SNDK)$’s August 13 investor day presented a long-term financial model that would once have looked implausible for a cyclical flash-memory manufacturer. Management expects mid-to-high-teens annual revenue growth from fiscal 2028 through 2030, adjusted gross margin around 80% and free-cash-flow margin near 50%. The stock surged almost 14%, but those exceptional targets also define how much future success investors now expect.

The targets follow an extraordinary fiscal fourth quarter, reported on August 5 for the period ended June 27. Revenue increased 51% sequentially to $8.97 billion, while GAAP and non-GAAP gross margin reached 84.6%. Non-GAAP earnings were $39.25 per diluted share. Approximately two-thirds of the sequential revenue increase came from pricing and one-third from greater bit shipments. Sandisk’s official fourth-quarter release provides the reported results and reconciliation.

The bullish thesis is that AI infrastructure requires enormous amounts of fast storage, not only accelerators and memory. Training data, model checkpoints and inference outputs must be stored and retrieved efficiently. Sandisk’s NAND technology and enterprise solid-state drives therefore participate directly in data-centre growth.

Management is also attempting to make the business less cyclical. Multiyear customer agreements are expected to cover approximately two-thirds of Sandisk’s capacity by fiscal 2028. These contracts can improve demand visibility and discourage the uncontrolled capacity expansion that historically produced memory-price collapses.

Sandisk intends to align revenue growth with mid-to-high-teens annual bit growth and return excess cash after funding the business. Sandisk’s official investor-day announcement outlines the long-term framework.

The bearish issue is that an 80% gross margin is extraordinarily high for commodity-influenced hardware. Current profitability reflects scarce supply and powerful pricing. Customers will seek alternatives, redesign storage systems or negotiate lower prices if supply expands. Technology transitions also require careful wafer management: producing too many bits can quickly reverse pricing.

The valuation provides little protection. Sandisk has risen more than sixfold during 2026 and trades above 50 times trailing earnings. Long-term contracts improve visibility but may also lock in commitments or prices that become less attractive if market conditions change. Reuters’ August 13 report confirms the growth targets and market reaction.

Sandisk gained 13.6% to $1,528.11 on August 13 after trading between $1,328.60 and $1,579.87 on heavy volume.

SNDK Daily Chart

Technically, the surge has pushed SNDK back into a major $1,514–$1,700 resistance zone on August 14 while also a critical breakout of the long-running descending trendline from the June peak. The recent basing action resembles a potential double-bottom reversal, but confirmation would require a decisive daily close above roughly $1,700, ideally followed by a successful retest that turns the former supply zone into support; if that occurs, the chart could open toward approximately $1,850–$2,000, with higher prior swing levels becoming relevant thereafter.

Because volatility is elevated after the sharp move, I would avoid chasing naked calls and instead consider a 60–90 DTE call debit spread, for example buying the $1,700 call and selling the $2,000 call, only after breakout retest confirmation.

A rejection from the current zone and a close back below roughly $1,500 would weaken the reversal thesis and increase the risk of another move toward the $1,300–$1,400 area.

The operating evidence leans bullish because pricing, AI-storage demand, contracts and cash generation reinforce one another. The stock outlook is neutral to moderately bullish because expectations are extreme. The view would be invalidated by NAND pricing weakening, multiyear agreements failing to stabilise demand, gross margin falling well below the long-term model or customers reducing AI-storage deployments.
