For SPCX to ever be profitable it will need to.amake Elon's fever dream of orbital data centres come true. Unfortunately for buyers, it's magical thinking just like the Mars colony we were promised would be operational 6 years ago.

The economics make no sense. Earth is full of land, water and energy. Even a small satellite is costly; mass exponentially increases the cost to orbit. A space travel company should understand this, but Musk has been ripping his special bag of rocket fuel too frequently to check whether his fantasies make sense.

A satellite cannot cool itself without massive radiators. It cannot power itself without massive solar arrays which are inherently intermittent. It cannot transmit data without added delay and transmission costs. It precludes economic maintenance or upgrades. It promotes the danger of orbit becoming unusable.

How does a data centre the size of a small city make more sense in space? The simple answer is that it doesn't. Elon has a childlike obsession with space but is also an AI proselyte. The only way to reconcile his ambitions is to find a way to make SpaceX seem like a plausible fit for an AI company, despite being in a crowded market and having a virtual monopoly on a profitable venture (the one in the name of the company).

It's frightening how much unconditional and uncritical trust the market has in a man who has operated a spectrum of unprofitable companies, cosplayed as a fascist and was rebuffed by Epstein for being unsubtle and uncool. I suppose some people have a prophetic relationship with science fiction.

Elon is not an ordinary person. He has vision and risk taking capacity. Who knew that Tesla would be running on batteries some years ago. Many researchers were toying with the project of solar and EV cars till his car became a reality and China improved on his vision and today the humanity is reaping the benefit. Reusable rockets are now a reality and star links will take communications to unimaginable levels. Don’t forget that he is the first trillionaire on this earth.

underwater data centers make more sense. space won't be economical until starship is done, which is many years away.
