🔻 🛢️ Nikkei extends losses as yen softens and oil risks rise

– Index has now dropped over 9% since U.S. and Israeli air strikes on Iran began more than two weeks ago, with the conflict spreading regionally and disrupting petroleum shipments via the Strait of Hormuz.

– Brief intraday rebound followed comments from U.S. President Trump, who said he is urging other nations to help secure shipping routes.

– Japan is unlikely to deploy naval vessels, per PM Sanae Takaichi, reinforcing concerns over prolonged energy supply risk (Reuters, 16 March).

– Yen weakened toward 160/USD, prompting Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama to signal readiness for decisive market action (dpa-AFX, 16 March).

– Rising oil prices and currency depreciation are fuelling stagflation fears, with Nomura’s Maki Sawada noting growing worries about simultaneous inflation pressure and slowing growth (Reuters, 16 March).

– Market breadth remained weak: 43 advancers vs. 182 decliners on the Nikkei, reflecting broad-based risk aversion.
