About CSI A500 Index
The CSI A500 Index—often referred to as the “S&P 500 of A-shares” selects 500 large and liquid companies across all major sectors to reflect the broad performance of China’s most representative industries. Its methodology emphasizes industry balance and quality selection, filtering constituents by free-float market capitalization, Stock Connect eligibility, and stringent liquidity criteria to enhance both stability and growth potential. The index also offers significantly broader market coverage than traditional A-share benchmarks, representing 56% of A-share free-float market capitalization and 64% of total earnings. The index also demonstrates stronger earnings growth in comparison with other major broad-based indices, reflecting the higher profitability and growth potential of its constituent sectors. Over the long term, the CSI A500 has also outperformed the CSI 300. Since inception, its cumulative return has exceeded the CSI 300 by over 115%. Year-to-date, it has delivered a 21.34% total return, nearly 3 percentage points ahead of the CSI 300, underscoring its sustained enhancement effect.^
The A500 Index ETF has become a top A-share allocation choice for long-term institutional capital such as insurance companies. According to Wind, as of the 2025 interim report, insurance institutions held RMB 45.23 billion in ETFs tracking the CSI A500—ranking first among all indices and far ahead of others.
Insurance funds are among the largest and longest-duration capital sources in the market. With a focus on asset–liability matching, they prefer stable and sustainable returns. Under strict regulatory and cost constraints, their allocation decisions typically reflect long-term views on industry fundamentals and asset quality, giving their positioning strong indicator value.
Not only that, Global Chinese and international investors can easily access the product in the secondary market with an initial investment of 1 SGD, enabling accessibility to China’s core equity growth.
Why Be Bullish on China?
In 2025, the Shanghai Composite (SSE Composite) Index has repeatedly hit “ten-year highs”, and the CSI A500 Index, representing a new generation of flagship broad-based indices, has also reached record closing prices since its inception.
The main drivers propelling the A-shares market to lead global markets this year are: (1) Inflows of capital which represents a significant driving force for the market's upward trend, (2) Improvements in fundamental expectations, (3) A temporary reduction in external risks.
As U.S. policy spillover weakened, the RMB gained independence and appreciated, boosting the appeal of RMB assets. Foreign inflows surged, with Europe- and U.S.-registered China passive funds reaching historical highs and driving the market upward. At the same time, manufacturing upgrades and ongoing technological innovation have become China’s new engines of growth.
Looking ahead, 2026 marks the beginning of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan. In the last five-year plan (2020–2025), industries that were included in the key support areas of the "14th Five-Year Plan" have significantly outperformed the market. The average return of these key industries reached as high as 41%, which is notably better than the approximately 3% return level of the CSI 300 Index during the same period.
