@SUBRAMANYAN--Building a Retirement Fortress: A 35-Year Journey from Insurance to Markets
@TigerClub:
Meet @Subramanyan — we sit down with a seasoned professional whose journey from the world of life insurance to active market investing spans over 35 years and multiple continents. Now based in Singapore, he shares the disciplined philosophy and hard-earned wisdom that guide his strategy today. From a standout success with Nvidia, which yielded over $100,000 in gains, to a sobering lesson from an impulsive trade that wiped out 60% of his investment, he offers a candid look at the realities of building wealth. Briefly introduce yourself and walk us through your investment journey, including your background, motivation to start, and strategies that led to your first significant financial milestone in the markets. I am a life insurance professional with 35+ years of experience across different continents, and presently working in Singapore. My motivation to start investing in Singapore over Tiger Brokers was rooted in the trust I placed in Singapore as an investment destination. And my strategy is to KIS – keep it simple. Focus on quality, pick stocks with conviction & then be patient, reassess periodically, and don’t panic. If and when a pick turns out to be a dud, don’t hesitate to book a loss and exit. What is the most successful or impressive investment experience you have had? My most successful investment, I must admit, is in my daughter’s upbringing & education: she made me really proud! Besides that, my investment in $NVIDIA(NVDA)$ fetched me over 100k in gains on an investment of about 70k. Thanks to conviction & patience! How do you select stocks and control risks? I read. And then I try a mix of Fundamental & Technical Analysis and diversification. And for risk management, it is with position sizing, regular review & staying informed. This helped in picking good stocks – and the only ones where I went with the hype rather than science hurt me badly - like DJT! What do you think the market will perform in 2025? And what's your investment goal this year? We are now towards the end of 2025. With Trump in the seat, it has been a yo-yo year thus far, and I do expect the coming years to be similar. I made my money. And my goal for the remainder of 2025 & for 2026 is to diversify more out of the US into Singapore & China - and a tiny entry into Japan if there is a chance. What key lessons have you learned from your biggest losses, and how did they impact your trading/investment philosophy? My biggest loss in my Tiger-based investments has been in DJT ☹. It wiped out over 60% of my investments. To be brutally honest, a lack of emotional discipline caused this to me, precisely an impulsive investment decision driven wholly by greed and against my better judgment. What this primarily taught me is to accept and learning from mistakes. Now, I follow a disciplined approach, relying on pre-defined strategies rather than emotions. How do you balance short-term trading opportunities with long-term investment goals? For me, retirement planning is the focus now. So, I focus on long-term investment goals for retirement & follow a core portfolio of 70% covering long-term blue-chip holdings and a 30% satellite portfolio for satisfying the trading bug & short-term trading, where I tend to look for more active management and higher risk-taking. On my core portfolio, I tend to just let it be. If any of its holdings are correct by 15%+, then add a few. In the satellite portfolio, I look for faster exits and booking profits on volatile stocks or ETFs – if a holding grows by over 10-20%, I am happy to book profits and exit to reenter later on a correction. Can you share what a typical trading day looks like for you — how you make decisions, and the habits or routines that help you stay consistent? Since the bulk of my holdings over Tiger are in the US market, I follow the news and premarket trends by 6 pm SGT and try to place orders. I prefer not to ruin my sleep over this, though. So, I tend to follow the strategy I explained in (6) above. 8Who or what has inspired your trading journey the most - mentors, books, or experiences? My Guru on investing is my old colleague Ranga – the best lesson I learnt from him is the value of rigorous research before investing and infinite patience post investment. And finally, never to ignore family or the other pleasures of life for investing was a lesson I try to follow. Where do you see yourself in five years as an investor? Any future goals or projects you're working on? Looking ahead, I envision myself as a more knowledgeable and diversified investor, with a portfolio that reflects both growth and resilience. Diversification across geos and asset classes to spread risk and capitalize on new growth areas is the main goal. Responsible investing is the next goal so that I can be at peace while achieving Financial Independence: If you had to use one sentence as a slogan to get people to subscribe to your Trade Feed account, what would it be—and what tips or advice would you share with Tiger friends in the community? My slogan for investment is “Grow Your Wealth One Disciplined Trade at a Time - Join for Consistency, Stay for Results”. I am by no means a master to be able to give tips. But I do believe in these 5 qualities: · Set Clear Goals to avoid impulsive decisions · Be systematic regardless of market noise · Be Patient: great results come from staying the course and not chasing quick wins · Be humble & learn from mistakes: Every trade is a lesson—reflect on your outcomes and adjust strategies as needed. · Engage with the Community: Share insights, ask questions, and support each other Thanks @Subramanyanfor the fantastic sharing!
