The U.S. government is less than 12 hours away from running out of funding, and the stakes of a government shutdown arehigher for federal workers because the White House is considering layoffs rather than temporary furloughs. 


The threat of a government shutdown has loomed over Washington for weeks as congressional Democrats have refused to budge on supporting a spending bill without a series of demands, mostly related to health care access and subsidies. Republicans are pushing a stopgap solution that would extend current funding levels until Nov. 21.

The threat of a government shutdown has loomed over Washington for weeks as congressional Democrats have refused to budge on supporting a spending bill without a series of demands, mostly related to health care access and subsidies. Republicans are pushing a stopgap solution that would extend current funding levels until Nov. 21.



President Donald Trump met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, among other congressional leaders, on Monday, Sept. 29. However, an agreement to keep the federal government open was not made.


"There was a frank and direct discussion with the president of the United States and Republican leaders," House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told reporters after the meeting with the president. "Significant and meaningful differences remain."


“I think we’re headed to a shutdown,” Vice President JD Vance said after the meeting.
