Aug. Byebye! Sep. Buybuy! Could September Effect Bring Buy Point?

As of August 28th’s close, $NASDAQ(.IXIC)$ and $S&P 500(.SPX)$ are up 2.76% and 2.56% respectively. The pullback that the market had been waiting for never came, yet the enthusiasm has already cooled down significantly.

What happened in August? How was your portfolio?

August saw weaker profit-making effects as sector rotations dominated and meme stocks made a surprising comeback.

Which stock brings you profits?

The "Mag 7" earnings were mixed, with none severely missing expectations, though $NVIDIA(NVDA)$, despite strong numbers, failed to dazzle.

$UnitedHealth(UNH)$ plunged post-earnings, only to rebound after rumors of Buffett increasing his stake.

Powell’s dovish tone earlier this month boosted sentiment, but Trump’s comments about firing Fed governors quickly reminded markets of political risks.

Despite these twists, the market ended August on solid footing.

What may September effect bring us?

September has historically been the worst month for the S&P 500.

After months of steady gains with little pullback, the market often experiences post-summer rebalancing as traders return from vacation and adjust positions, behavioral biases leading investors to trim positions after rallies, mutual fund fiscal year-ends forcing the sale of underperformers, rising volatility and retail participation, hedging activity for Q4.

September could be tedious but also rewarding if played well, while long-term investors can largely ignore the noise.

  • How was your August trading performance?

  • Do you believe in the September Effect, or is it just market superstition?

  • Which stocks are on your buy list for a potential dip?

    八月份表现平平,没有什么买入。只是趁反弹出掉了一直亏损很久的股票。感觉股市涨得太快了,9月可能会回调一波。

August was more about sector rotation than big gains for me. My portfolio stayed green, mainly from defensive names and trimming some tech. NVIDIA’s $NVIDIA Corp(NVDA)$ strong earnings didn’t move the market much, which reminded me to stay cautious on expectations and not chase momentum blindly.

For September, I see the “September Effect” less as superstition and more as seasonal rebalancing—funds trimming and investors locking profits. Volatility usually rises, so I’ll be careful with short-term trades but stay steady with long-term positions. It’s a month where discipline matters more than prediction.

On dips, I’m watching Tesla $Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ and Palantir $Palantir Technologies Inc.(PLTR)$ , while healthcare offers stability $Oscar Health, Inc.(OSCR)$ . September may be choppy, but it often sets up attractive entry points before year-end, which is why I’m keeping cash ready.

The September Effect is a supposed market anormaly whereby the stock market returns are relatively weak during September. The stock market’s solid gains during August 2025 have brought the indexes to new highs. Such high performance will be difficult to duplicate in the September. Although the Fed has hinted rate cuts, it still has to depends on whether labor-market weakness continues to look like a bigger risk than rising inflation. And the new inflation data has showed rising prices is still a risk heading into September. There might be some volatility in September and hopefully it is a great buying opportunity if the market rally into year end. Buy the dip $NVIDIA(NVDA)$🚀🚀🚀 Thank you & “Big Like” to @Tiger_comments @TigerStars @Tiger_SG @Tiger_chat @MillionaireTiger @icycrystal

My august trading performance has been good so far. I believe in the September effect to a certain extent. I have been eyeing to buy more semiconductor related stocks such as NVIDIA and ASML in case it dipped further below my intrinsic value.

The ways of trading have changed since the online platforms like Tiger and Moomoo started operating. So the worse months to trade or to buy have changed too. I remembered a few weeks ago, many also said sell in August but look what happened, nothing. August reminds the same... a normal trading month

August has been a very kind month as both HK/ China and US stocks rose. The pullback didn’t happen.

This September will be different from previous ones as everyone is hoping for the rate cut that has been slow to come since the last one. If the Fed gives marker what it expects, there is a good chance that market would rise on that optimism.

The September effect is probably just market trend to me as investors and traders review their portfolio and adjust accordingly. So, it is scientific in that sense and nothing superstitious. Market fluctuations often usually in accordance to market events like earnings season, inflation reports, and in recent times, war and the ceasefire.

As traders and investors, we manage the risk and do our trades accordingly. I think it is more important to remain steadfast, clarity in goals and risk management.

If the market dips, I will be looking at adding more VTI. It is diverse and in the longer term, the world index will likely rise more than fall.

My Aug portfolio dropped a little but it is as expected. I will continue to buy few tranches on shares which is also in the list mentioned if they continue to fall. [Cool]

August stocks fly too high, if September have a healthy pullback, it is a good time for DCA, however we can't time the market.... @AI_Dig

🌟🌟🌟On August 28, the S&P500 Index closed at a record breaking 6,501, its 28th all time high of 2025.  That was not a fluke. It was a crescendo.  A surge in Tech Titans like Google, Amazon pushed the index higher, defying gravity even as other sectors wobbled.  It marked a 10.5% climb year todate and a stunning 30% rebound from its April low.  This wasn't just a rally.  It was a roar.

My conviction in $SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 ETF(SPLG)$ is paying off as I am up 47%.  SPLG is the mini version of SPY with a super low expense ratio of 0.02%.  Both ETFs are managed by the same fund manager State Street Global.

    Why did August shine?

Texh resilience : AI optimism and cloud infrastructure demand ignited faith in US megacaps.

    Easing interest rate expectations.

    And September?

September may test the nerves of short term traders but for me, it is just another chapter in a long beautifully compounding journey.

August was rather meh for me because I started being rather cautious in preparation for the September effect. September effect isn't a superstition but more of seasonal portfolio rebalancing. I've set aside cash to buy the dips, so let's see 🔥🚀

The market is influenced by countless variables while relying on the "September Effect" as a precise trading signal is risky though it is not entirely superstition it is not a reliable predictor of future performance either even if September has historically been the worst month for the S&P 500。。。
