Spreading the Love or Betting on the Champ in a Hot Industry?

Welcome to Thursday Special!

When it comes to investing, there's this intriguing question:

Do you diversify your investment by buying several stocks in the same industry, or do you go all-in on the strongest player in the game?

It's like choosing between spreading your bets or putting everything on the winning horse – a conundrum that speaks volumes about an investor's risk appetite, return expectations, and market outlook.💡

  1. Well, by diversifying, you're like a superhero with a shield, protecting yourself from the blows of a single company's poor performance. Different companies, different strokes – they say. Plus, each company might have its own secret sauce, excelling under various market conditions. It's like having a diverse squad ready to tackle any market challenge.

  2. On the flip side, those who prefer putting their money on the absolute best performer in the industry. These investors believe that concentrating on the top player allows them to ride the waves of that company's success without being dragged down by the underperformers. After all, the strongest companies usually come armed with killer competitiveness, rock-solid finances, and management teams that know their stuff.

Diversification might soften the punches, but does it sacrifice some of the thrill of big wins? On the other hand, putting all your chips on the champ could mean a wild ride, with the potential for huge rewards and, of course, heart-stopping moments.

So, what's your play? 🚀💸

Wishing everyone a prosperous new year filled with successful trades and investment opportunities![Heart]

I would diversify to different industry instead of going all in on one. better to spread out... perhaps am conservative and playing it safe... ain't rich [USD] [USD] [USD] like uncle buffett or aunty cathy or can afford to be like the charismatic one behaving "erratically" swinging the market... [Wow] [Wow] [Wow] so till I am rich like them... maybe just maybe, I may take the risk of going all in in one industry [smile] [smile] [smile]

For me, I will not blindly diversify and chase the hot stocks.
Always choose the right stocks that you are familiar and the leaders of the industry.
Keep accumulating along your investment journey.
During the dips. do not panic sell, instead buy in batches to build up even more.
Along the way, you may take some profit when the stock reaches all time high and there is valid signals for a pull back.
Last but not least. remember to give some profit back to your community.
The well being of all makes the world a better place for everyone.
May the market be with you.

Diversify! Better to have small gains than to have portfolio wiped out! So i have a mix of safe bets and big players. The difference is i tend to allocate less money to volatile stocks so to minimise crazy hits to my overall portfolio

As I am conservative and prefer a stable return, i go for diversification. Index stocks are what i usually use as reference such as  $SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(SPY)$

The answer is simple. It depends on your context and your capability. I’ll try fo find the right time and explain more, but think of it as do you prefer to eat a single favourite single dish or a buffet spread? [Grin]

Yes, I diversify to companies with the strong economic moat in different sectors. Go all-in on the strongest player might sound dangerous in case the company share price falls in short term.

if over diversification is a person, you're looking at me! in 2024, I will consolidate positions to a few reliable stocks & ETFs. I guess the lesson learnt from over diversification is that if/when there's a dip, which position am I going to add on to when funds are limited?

My approach is to look at the constituents of the relevant ETF, and identify the top 3 or four players. I then DCA into those names potentially using Cash-Secured puts to do so. for example, in the gold space, it was Barrick, Newmont, and Agnico Eagle.

I choose to diversify because why throw all of your eggs in one basket where u could throw them in different baskets?

My main investment is DCA strategy in indexes. And sub category is on individual stocks with business model that I believe in. On top of that, I do options trading too. That is how I diversify.

Although diversity may be good, for newbies it does not necessarily to be overly diversified.  Since the capital is limited, it will be better to focus on few stocks that are good with moat not easily broken.

The horse analogy is a poor one. A horse race has just one winner, and if you hedge your bets there, you are almost guaranteed to lose overall. However, diversifying in the market allows you to spread the risk while maintaining the possibility that all of your companies excel and generate profits.
The question should be: "Is this a good company for me to own?" I doesn't have to be THE winner, just A winner!

there are still significant differences for stocks in the same industry. just like NVDA and AMD, most people will think AMD has more room for stock price to go. 6 monthd ago i will say the same thing. hindsight is always 7/7. some diversification is always important so you won't miss out too much

One of the key benefits of diversification is risk mitigation. By holding a variety of investments, the potential negative impact of a single underperforming asset is limited. This helps protect the overall portfolio from significant losses and provides a smoother ride through market fluctuations. Investors often use a mix of stocks, bonds, real estate, and other assets to achieve diversification.

However, as you rightly pointed out, diversification does come with a potential downside – the dilution of big wins. When you spread your investments across various assets, the chance of any single investment making a substantial impact on the portfolio diminishes.

On the other side of the spectrum is concentrated investing, a strategy where an investor allocates a significant portion of their portfolio to a single asset or a few select investments. This approach is often associated with a higher level of risk and volatility but carries the allure of substantial rewards.
