Is IQ necessarily correlated with investing returns or not?

The relationship between IQ and yearly returns in the stock market is a subject of ongoing debate among investors.

  • low IQ loses 100%: they don't know any better choices

  • middle range IQ earns 10%: buy and hold $SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(SPY)$

  • high IQ loses 700%: incredibly sophisticated and intricate strategy that turns out to be stupid

Some argue that individuals with IQs in the middle range tend to fare well, with the capacity to make reasonable returns through relatively straightforward strategies like buying and holding an index fund such as $SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(SPY)$.

Conversely, individuals with exceptionally high IQs may struggle in the stock market. These investors might overcomplicate their strategies, leading to losses that can be substantial.

Those with lower IQs are seen as being particularly vulnerable to substantial losses because they may lack the knowledge to make informed decisions, potentially losing their entire investment capital.

🌟🌟🌟It would seem that high IQ may lead to better investing or is it?  Warren Buffett disagrees.  In fact he said an investor needs to be smart, not a genius.  He places more emphasis on Rationality and Emotional Stability.  Rationality is a sound intellectual framework for making decisions and the ability to keep emotions in check are important qualities to have in investing.

I prefer to have EQ or Emotional Intelligence which is the ability to understand, use and manage my emotions in positive ways so that I do not make irrational decisions when Fear pervades the markets.  That way I can achieve my goal of FIRE - Financial Independence Retire Early.  My motto is Slow and Steady Wins the Race.  It is certainly not Fast and Furious.  Investing is after all a Marathon not a Sprint!

Yes I agree with this meme this time. High IQ tends to think too much sometimes and might over affect their decisions. Besides, other than IQ, EQ is equally important in investment. How do you think?

well, to some extent, cld be true [Thinking] let's see… [Thinking] perhaps my reasoning - say in general, the norm is: with high IQ, a person tends to be "creative" in their thinking & wld think of possible scenarios & ways, coming up with strategies, models, etc to "outwit" the market. this cld be dangerous & risky as they are trying to "beat the system". it may work or may not work. perhaps luck wld have a hand in this as well. thus, high IQ people may come across as impatient, want to get things done fast, etc… in trading, patience is required. low IQ, maybe this group of people they didn't "quite care" & wld trade with "hearsay". didn't bother to check or confirm what they hear. thus, may end up losing. while the middle IQ, probably, they are the patience ones, wld check & confirm what they hear… perhaps they don't panic easily... which is why they trade long term, buy & hold… well, perhaps perhaps perhaps… [Thinking] reposting & tagging @Zarkness @rL @HelenJanet @GoodLife99

[Happy]

For sure IQ is needed to invest. But there are many factors beyond the control of the common man! And depends on investment horizon. In the short term, especially in the last 2 years, there are many 'fools'...[LOL]

High IQ helps in analysis but like AI, the outcome would likely point to certain popular prediction. This, however, may not lead to breakthroughs and profitability generally are one lap behind.

Lower IQ are vulnerable to big losses and decisions many a time are gambles. Then again, one big win may cover all loses. If he or she is lucky, a 1000X gamble will propel him or her ahead of the higher IQ herd who are in a way limited by conventional wisdom.

I may agree partially, especially if one has relatively low IQ, one will blindly follow whatever the advice from the news while at the other end of the IQ, the highest IQ may lack the basic emotional IQ to be discipline during investing cycle.
Therefore invest with discipline and rationality. One important rule, only invest and not gamble your money away.

I don't agree that high IQ will have high return in the market. You also need high EQ that you do not panic and over react when stock price drop. You need to be calm and patience. I am more on options trading now. I find this investment strategy is good to use whether the market is bullish or bearish. It can help you to earn premium..

Is it true that “individuals with exceptionally high IQs may struggle in the stock market (lose 700%)”? It is thought that they might overcomplicate their strategies, leading to losses that can be substantial. I think strong EQ is needed in addition to strong IQ in order to win in the stock market. This is because stock market is a complex place consists of large and small investors making uncoordinated decisions about a huge variety of investments. Stock markets are unpredictable and past prices cannot be used to accurately predict future prices. Stocks are very sensitive to interest rate changes. At the macro level, changes in government policies, economic growth data and inflation rates are influential on the value of stocks. I am the “middle range IQ earns 10%: buy & hold $SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(SPY)$”! [LOL][LOL][LOL] Which type of investors are you? Thanks 🐯 friend for tag @Shyon [love you][love you]
