call centers seen as ‘gold mine’ for software makers\nPhotographer: Dhiraj Singh/Bloomberg\nCustomer support has become a crowded battlefield in enterprise technology as software vendors from Microsoft Corp. to Salesforce.com Inc. rush to arm organizations with tools to create one-stop service centers.\nThe attention is revitalizing the call center, a once-backwater unit that has long suffered from high turnover rates and minimal corporate investment. Salesforce,ServiceNow Inc.,Twilio Inc. and Genesys Cloud Services Inc. are among the companies that see the call center as a critical part of efforts to transform the consumer base from a sea of faceless pocketbooks to potentially millions of unique personas. It’s viewed as a way to improve customer service and bolster brand loyalty at a time when businesses are increasingly worried about churn.\nZoom Video Communications Inc. was prepared to fork over $14.7 billion in stock to buy Five9 Inc. to gain a foothold in the contact center industry. But Five9 shareholders ultimately thought the price was too low and turned down the deal, a testament to just how much the sector is expected to grow in the coming years.\n“Instead of being a cost center, it’s a lifetime value driver,” said Vasili Triant, chief operating officer at UJET Inc., a closely held San Francisco-based call center cloud software provider. As a result, “this space has drawn a lot of attention. Companies need to improve experience. Because of that, a lot of money has flown into it. When money flows into it, people see a huge opportunity.”\nHistorically, customer support software was viewed as a money pit -- systems that were necessary to help field consumer complaints or inquiries but produced little return on investment. Many businesses simply wanted to pick a product, deploy it and forget about it. As a result, the market was fragmented between just a handful of top vendors, including Genesys,Cisco Systems Inc. and Avaya Inc.\nBut as more companies move those systems to the internet, that mindset is undergoing a seismic shift. For the last several years, the focus has been on helping call center agents provide better customer support and cut down on service times. That has meant taking steps like consolidating different applications onto a single desktop interface, alleviating the need for agents to toggle between different tabs to view customer data stored in various places.\nThe future is centered on artificial intelligence. Call center software providers, including Genesys, Amazon Web Services and Five9, tout investments in natural language processing, a type of AI focused on empowering machines to understand how humans communicate, including interpreting conversations and analyzing them for sentiment.\nThe goal is to tap the technology to power software that can automatically provide insights on customers for agents during calls to improve communications. While some of that capability is available with existing products, it will be several years before it’s fully operational.\n“A lot of people are realizing this is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, unclaimed pot of gold out there,” said Gustavo Sapoznik, chief executive officer of Asapp Inc., one of those startups focused on the area. “The big opportunity is to elevate human performance, to make the people working these jobs much better by building technology that allows them to.”\nA Crowded Market\nBut the broader vision is much more grandiose. A glut of providers, including Salesforce, Microsoft, Zoom,Zendesk Inc.,Adobe Inc. and ServiceNow, are pitching a future that goes beyond the call center to one focused on providing a better customer experience regardless of how they interact with a business.\n“Right now, there’s a lot of different competitors coming into this market from different angles,” said Gartner analyst Drew Kraus. “It will almost certainly go through some type of market consolidation. But for now, more people are getting in than getting out.”\nThe goal is to make it easier to share data between a variety of programs, like those managing the website, customer relations, marketing, e-commerce and social media. For customers, such a system would enable more seamless interactions with businesses. An individual could be talking to an agent on the phone, decide to switch to an online chat, and have the history of the previous discussion carry over.\n“The whole notion of having a contact center whose entire focus is about limiting interactions with customers because that’s a cost, that is being challenged,” said Simonetta Turek, the general manager of Twilio’s call center product, Flex.\nAnd for companies, storing that information within one system -- what vendors are increasingly refer to as a customer data platform, or CDP -- would enable them to run analysis and glean deeper insights into their customers. Most companies are in the early stages of putting together that kind of setup. In fact, just 32% of call center agents are using cloud-based technology, according to Gartner.\nConstructing a system where all those programs work together could also prove difficult. For the past two decades, software-as-a-service providers built guardrails around their products that prevented data from being easily shared. That helped customers quickly adopt the applications, underscoring a huge growth in sales, but created challenges for businesses that increasingly want those systems to talk to one another. It’s why vendors that provide the technology to link disparate programs, like Informatica Inc. and Workato Inc., are seeing a boom in business.\nAn exploding number of applications now in use within most businesses is only compounding that problem. A company, for example, may use Genesys for the call center, RingCentral as a phone provider, Glia for messaging over web or mobile applications, Salesforce to manage the customer database, Shopify for e-commerce and slews of other programs that hold different types of customer data.\n“It’s all having to come together because what companies want is a full system to help them see all of their interactions,” said Paul Jarman, chief executive officer of Nice CXone, the cloud software product from Nice Ltd. And nobody “has figured it out because it’s all been siloed.”\nPaul JarmanPhotographer: George Frey/Bloomberg\nA Web of Partnerships\nIt’s unlikely that any one vendor will be able to consolidate and manage all those services in one offering. That’s why software makers are rushing to partner with other vendors, creating new alliances between rival companies centered on integrating programs together to capture the bulk of how customers use them.\nLast month, for example, Genesys announced $580 million in new funding from strategic partners Salesforce, Zoom and ServiceNow -- all companies trying to deepen their footprint in the call center industry. Salesforce, for example, has its own platform for call center agents that competes with Genesys’s systems. But it’s viewed as a viable option only for customers that are already robust Salesforce users or smaller companies that don’t have as much legacy software lingering around, according to Gartner’s Kraus.\nNotably, however, Salesforce, also has a deep partnership with Amazon Web Services, which sells its own call center product called Connect that is increasingly in competition with Genesys.\nGenesys also has launched partnerships with the likes of Adobe and Alphabet Inc.’s Google Cloud. As the year comes to a close, we're taking a look at some beaten-down stocks that we think the market has wrong.\nThree longtime Fool contributors picked their favorite stock for 2022 that was off its high 50% or more. They came up with Chewy (NYSE:CHWY), Palantir Technologies (NYSE:PLTR), and Lemonade (NYSE:LMND).\nImage source: Getty Images.\nAfter months on a leash, this stock could run again soon \nWill Healy (Chewy): Chewy has carved out a niche for itself in the pet supply business. This e-commerce stock has stood out over prospective competitors such as Amazon through a higher level of customer interaction. The company stands by its 100% unconditional satisfaction guarantee and offers its customer a personal touch, which has built loyalty among its customer base.\nChewy stock thrived during the pandemic, but interestingly, near-term concerns appear to hinge on the concept of pet ownership, not Chewy's performance. Having a pet became more attractive during the pandemic, according to The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Consequently, investors seem worried that the end of the lockdowns would lead to less interest in pet ownership, even though the evidence suggests otherwise. Such concerns helped put Chewy in the doghouse as it dropped by more than 50% since peaking in February.\nNonetheless, investors should not expect Chewy to roll over permanently. This year, the company partnered with Trupanion to offer pet health insurance. And despite worries, Chewy also increased net sales per active customer by 15% over the last year to $419.\nGiven that surge, it should not surprise shareholders that the company reported over $6.5 billion in revenue for the first nine months of 2021, 27% more than in the first three quarters of 2020. This reduced the net loss in the first 39 weeks of 2021 to just over $10 million, primarily by slowing the growth in the cost of goods sold to 23%. Chewy lost close to $114 million during the same period in 2020.\nFor the full year, Chewy forecasts revenue at approximately $8.9 billion. If that holds, it would signify 25% higher revenue year over year. Admittedly, that also points to a fourth-quarter sales forecast of $2.42 billion at the midpoint, which would mean a more modest 18% increase.\nHowever, thanks to that rising revenue and falling stock price, the price-to-sales (P/S) ratio now stands at 2.8. This closely approximates Chewy's sales multiple from two years ago, before the start of the pandemic. Such a P/S ratio and the prospects for further growth could make Chewy an increasingly attractive buying opportunity.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nCutting-edge artificial intelligence at a discount\nDanny Vena (Palantir): When the stock market swoons, it sometimes throws out the baby with the bathwater, as the old saying goes. This presents savvy investors with an opportunity to pick up shares of high-growth companies on the cheap. That is certainly the case with Palantir Technologies.\nIn the wake of 9/11, it became clear that the U.S. government needed a way to gather, analyze, and share siloed data trapped in aging software systems across various intelligence agencies that didn't communicate.\nPeter Thiel, one of the co-founders of PayPal Holdings, developed an elegant solution: a data mining tool that could collect information from across thousands of government databases and assemble a puzzle from pieces left by would-be terrorists. By using machine learning and other artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, it could distinguish patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed -- and Palantir was born.\nPalantir has the ability to fuse together seemingly unrelated factoids, giving intelligence officials advance notice for potential terrorist attacks. The system is able to stitch together seemingly disparate pieces of information to create a picture -- a one-way plane ticket; large, frequent withdrawals from foreign bank accounts; a rented condo; repeated calls to known terrorist safe havens; a rented truck; and the purchase of theme park tickets -- and in doing so identify a potential terrorist attack.\nNo longer relegated to just government agencies, Palantir's technology can be deployed by commercial enterprises to gather unstructured, siloed data across legacy systems and assemble it in one place, thereby providing keen and valuable insights -- and business is booming.\nIn the third quarter, total revenue grew 36% year over year, but revenue from U.S. enterprise businesses surged 103%, as Palantir's commercial customer count grew 46%. In fact, since Dec. 31, 2020, its commercial customer count has increased 135%.\nPalantir closed 54 deals worth more than $1 million, of which 33 contracts were worth $5 million, and 18 were worth $10 million or more. The company's total remaining deal value -- similar to remaining performance obligation -- climbed 50% to $3.6 billion, giving keen insight into Palantir's future prospects.\nWhile the company isn't yet profitable, it generated operating cash flow of more than $100 million, which shows that much of the shortfall is related to non-cash expenses like depreciation.\nEven more compelling was management's commentary that it expects annual revenue growth of at least 30% or more through 2025.\nYet even in light of its impressive results and stellar prospects, Palantir's stock has lost more than half its value, dragged down by the overall negative market sentiment. This gives investors the opportunity to buy into a wildly successful business at a significant discount.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nThis insurance disruptor may be down, but it's not out\nBrian Withers (Lemonade): Lemonade is disrupting the insurance industry with products that embody the company's tag line, \"Instant everything. Incredible prices. Big heart.\" Its co-founders, Daniel Schreiber and Shai Wininger, wanted to build a different kind of insurance company. In the S-1 filing, they described it as \"rebuilding insurance from the ground up on a digital substrate and an innovative business model\" to make insurance \"more delightful, more affordable, more precise, and more socially impactful.\" From its results, they seem to be doing just that.\nThe table below includes selected results from the latest earnings report. Not only is the company collecting 84% more premiums year over year, but its premiums per customer are also gaining ground at an impressive 26%.\n\n\n\nMetric\nQ3 2020\nQ2 2021\nQ3 2021 \nChange (QOQ)\nChange (YOY)\n\n\n\n\nIn force premium (IFP)\n$189 million\n$297 million\n$347 million\n17%\n84%\n\n\nCustomers\n0.94 million\n1.21 million\n1.36 million\n12%\n45%\n\n\nIFP per customer\n$201\n$246\n$254\n3%\n26%\n\n\n\nData source: Company earnings reports. QOQ = quarter over quarter. YOY = year over year.\nBut what savvy investors know is that these results are based only on its renters, life, pet, and homeowners insurance. This doesn't even include anything from its entry into auto insurance. In early November, the company tiptoed into this market with the announcement of its first auto policies available in Illinois. But, a few days later, it made a massive splash with the announcement of its acquisition of Metromile in an all-stock transaction. Management has estimated that Lemonade's customers spend more than $1 billion on auto insurance products from other companies. When this deal closes in the second quarter of 2022, the 1 million-plus Lemonade customers will have access to Lemonade-branded auto policies. As a Lemonade shareholder, this is certainly well worth waiting for.\nIn the meantime, investors can get this innovative insurance disruptor with an impressive moat on sale. The market has bid down this insurance technology stock close to an all-time low. With the stock down over 70% from its high, those who want to get a deal on this lemon may not get it at a better price than it is today.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"AI":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3348,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9000347076,"gmtCreate":1639964444723,"gmtModify":1676533496825,"author":{"id":"3575868096668855","authorId":"3575868096668855","name":"Kenjing","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c8943963650fda38afb46a9fe04b592c","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575868096668855","authorIdStr":"3575868096668855"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9000347076","repostId":"1175656936","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2711,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9000344455,"gmtCreate":1639964367099,"gmtModify":1676533496818,"author":{"id":"3575868096668855","authorId":"3575868096668855","name":"Kenjing","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c8943963650fda38afb46a9fe04b592c","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575868096668855","authorIdStr":"3575868096668855"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9000344455","repostId":"1134509072","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3479,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"defaultTab":"posts","isTTM":true}
