Profit was $34.6 billion, or $2.10 per share, compared with analysts' expectations of $31 billion and $1.89 per share.</p><p>The pandemic has accelerated adoption of digital tools for communication, learning and entertainment, powering Apple to blowout sales across each of the company's segments, including computers, accessories and tablets.</p><p>Apple's services business, which covers paid apps such as Apple TV+, Apple Music and Apple Fitness, also has seen a big bump. Services revenue rose 24% to $19.5 billion, topping analysts' estimates of $18.6 billion. The company has 785 million paying subscribers across its offerings, an increase from 620 million a year ago and 745 million last quarter.</p><p>Sales for iPads fell 14% to $7.25 billion compared with analyst estimates of $8.2 billion, seeming to confirm industry predictions that iPads would have low priority for any scarce parts.</p><p>Sales for Macs rose 25% to $10.9 billion compared with estimates of $9.5 billion, and sales for accessories rose 13% to $14.7 billion compared with estimates of $14.6 billion.</p><p>For investors, the growing services business is helping mitigate production challenges. Apple is trading at 27 times expected earnings over the next 12 months. Last month, the fast-food chain announced plans to increase wages so employees earn an average of $15 an hour by late June.\nBut the tweet wasn't entirely wrong -- consumers are paying more for a slew of goods.\nRental cars, airfare and uncooked beef roasts cost 12.1%, 7% and 6.4% more last month, respectively, compared to April, according to the latest monthly report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that tracks how much Americans are paying for nearly 80,000 different goods and services.\nThe report, known as the Consumer Price Index, uses all the price data from the individual goods and services to estimate how much more or less Americans can expect to pay for goods across the board.\nData from the most recent CPI report estimates that Americans paid 0.6% more for goods overall compared to the prior month and 5% more compared to last May.\nWhat inflation is and what it isn't\nBy definition, inflation is an overall increase in prices of almost all goods and services -- so yes, people in the U.S. are experiencing inflation currently.\nBut the fact that Chipotle is charging more for its food doesn't inherently mean that there's inflation, said Michael Weber, a University of Chicago Booth School of Business economist.\n\"Prices or costs go up and down all the time,\" he said. \"If across a whole range of goods, prices systematically and persistently go up, that's what we call inflation.\"\nCase in point: At the height of the pandemic a pack of three 8 oz. bottles of Purell was listed for nearly $70 on Amazon $(AMZN)$ -- more than four times what consumers paid for the same pack pre-pandemic, according to CamelCamelCamel.com, a site that tracks prices of good listed on Amazon. That compares to $554 million forthe January 2021 fiscal year.\nSnowflake (ticker: SNOW) should still be growing 30% at the top-line at that point, according to chief financial officer Mike Scarpelli, while generating 10% operating margins and free cash flow margins of 15% or better. He also said the company now sees a total addressable market of $90 billion, an expansion of more than 10% from the $81 billion estimated market size cited during its IPO roadshow in 2020.\nThe long-term growth goals help frame the huge opportunity that Snowflake has ahead, but did nothing to change the fundamental debate about the stock: Does the impressive growth rate—120% in product revenue in the latest year— justify the massive valuation? In afternoon trading Friday, shares were off 4.4%, to $237.84.\nCanaccord Genuity analyst David Hynes notes that if Snowflake hits its $10 billion target, it would be the fastest that a software company has reached that size. Hynes adds that the history of the management team, led by CEO Frank Slootman, suggests Snowflake could reach its target early.\nBut Hynes nonetheless is sticking with his Hold rating and $240 target price. “There’s no doubt that this is an exceptional business, but in our view, the stock’s current valuation”—about 47 times estimated calendar 2022 revenues—“fully reflects it.” He adds that as estimates move higher and the stock grinds sideways, he’s “getting closer to an upgrade,” but isn’t there yet. “We’re content to wait for more of the excess to burn off.”\nLikewise, Morgan Stanley analyst Keith Weiss writes in a research note that given the 120% product growth in fiscal 2021, the $10 billion target might be conservative. He adds that “the harder part of the equation may be justifying the valuation based on these targets.” Weiss says the model that Snowflake laid out implies $1.6 billion in free cash flow in fiscal 2029, which values the stock at 51 times free cash flow 8 years out. “While very impressed by the market opportunity …and Snowflake’s opportunity,” he says valuation keeps him on the sidelines.
