Its after-tax operating earnings from a widely diversified group of businesses, including the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad, a huge property-and-casualty insurance business, and one of the country’s largest electric utilities, are expected to rise more than 10% this year to $35 billion despite economic headwinds.</p><p>Even better, Buffett is acting like Buffett again.</p><p>After a period of inactivity following the onset of the pandemic—which disappointed many Berkshire investors—Buffett snapped up P&C insurer Alleghany for $11.6 billion last year, a cheap price. He spent $8 billion earlier this year to boost Berkshire’s stake to 80% in the parent of Pilot Flying J truck stops, which should benefit from the accelerated rollout of charging stations nationwide in the next decade.</p><p>Buffett also has been an active buyer of stocks, particularly in the energy sector. Berkshire now owns $27 billion of Chevron (CVX) and has steadily amassed a 23.6% stake in Occidental Petroleum (OXY) worth $13 billion, which has prompted speculation that Buffett may buy the whole company.</p><h2>Squeaking By</h2><h3>Despite Warren Buffett’s stock-picking prowess, Berkshire stock has only managed to keep up with the S&P 500.</h3><table style=\"border-collapse:collapse;\"><tbody><tr><th style=\"text-align:left;\"><p></p></th><th style=\"text-align:left;\"><p>1-Yr Return</p></th><th style=\"text-align:left;\"><p>5-Yr Return</p></th><th style=\"text-align:left;\"><p>10-Yr Return</p></th><th style=\"text-align:left;\"><p>20-Yr Return</p></th></tr></tbody><tbody><tr><td style=\"text-align:left;\"><p><strong>Berkshire</strong></p></td><td style=\"text-align:left;\"><p>0.6%</p></td><td style=\"text-align:left;\"><p>11.0%</p></td><td style=\"text-align:left;\"><p>12.0%</p></td><td style=\"text-align:left;\"><p>10.3%</p></td></tr><tr><td style=\"text-align:left;\"><p><strong>S&P 500</strong></p></td><td style=\"text-align:left;\"><p>0.5</p></td><td style=\"text-align:left;\"><p>11.1</p></td><td style=\"text-align:left;\"><p>12.2</p></td><td style=\"text-align:left;\"><p>10.1</p></td></tr></tbody></table><p>Note: Five-, 10-, and 20-year returns are annualized</p><p>Source: Bloomberg</p><p>Even after that, Berkshire is sitting on more than $125 billion of cash that could be deployed in what Buffett has called an “elephant size” acquisition. Until then, that cash, which Buffett shrewdly kept in short-term Treasury bills, can earn 5% while banks are sitting on over $600 billion of bond losses. Plus, it’s one of the most defensive large-cap stocks due to what Buffett calls its “Fort Knox” balance sheet and durable earnings.</p><p>“Berkshire is attractive and defensive in the financial sector,” says Edward Jones analyst James Shanahan, who notes that the company doesn’t have the loan, funding, and margin issues confronting banks.</p><p>Add it all up and Berkshire stock looks appealing, despite not appearing cheap. The Class A shares, at about $500,000, are up 6.6% this year and trade for 21.6 times projected 2023 earnings, a premium to the S&P 500 index’s 18.9 times. Its after-tax operating earnings from a widely diversified group of businesses, including the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad, a huge property-and-casualty insurance business, and one of the country’s largest electric utilities, are expected to rise more than 10% this year to $35 billion despite economic headwinds.Even better, Buffett is acting like Buffett again. After a period of inactivity following the onset of the pandemic—which disappointed many Berkshire investors—Buffett snapped up P&C insurer Alleghany for $11.6 billion last year, a cheap price. He spent $8 billion earlier this year to boost Berkshire’s stake to 80% in the parent of Pilot Flying J truck stops, which should benefit from the accelerated rollout of charging stations nationwide in the next decade.Buffett also has been an active buyer of stocks, particularly in the energy sector. Berkshire now owns $27 billion of Chevron (CVX) and has steadily amassed a 23.6% stake in Occidental Petroleum (OXY) worth $13 billion, which has prompted speculation that Buffett may buy the whole company.Squeaking ByDespite Warren Buffett’s stock-picking prowess, Berkshire stock has only managed to keep up with the S&P 500.1-Yr Return5-Yr Return10-Yr Return20-Yr ReturnBerkshire0.6%11.0%12.0%10.3%S&P 5000.511.112.210.1Note: Five-, 10-, and 20-year returns are annualizedSource: BloombergEven after that, Berkshire is sitting on more than $125 billion of cash that could be deployed in what Buffett has called an “elephant size” acquisition. Until then, that cash, which Buffett shrewdly kept in short-term Treasury bills, can earn 5% while banks are sitting on over $600 billion of bond losses. Plus, it’s one of the most defensive large-cap stocks due to what Buffett calls its “Fort Knox” balance sheet and durable earnings.“Berkshire is attractive and defensive in the financial sector,” says Edward Jones analyst James Shanahan, who notes that the company doesn’t have the loan, funding, and margin issues confronting banks.Add it all up and Berkshire stock looks appealing, despite not appearing cheap. The Class A shares, at about $500,000, are up 6.6% this year and trade for 21.6 times projected 2023 earnings, a premium to the S&P 500 index’s 18.9 times. The stock is valued at about 1.4 times book value, using Shanahan’s June 30 estimate for book value, in line with its five- and 10-year averages. The more actively traded Berkshire Class B shares look like a slightly better bet. They trade for $326 a share, a roughly 2% discount to the A shares. (Each B share is worth 1/1500th of an A share.)Many investors focus on what Buffett has called Berkshire’s “look through” earnings, a calculation that reflects the proportional profits of the companies in the company’s investment portfolio, led by Apple (AAPL). So whatThere are a couple of reasons why investors may be liking this latest Apple news. On one hand, it's a warm and fuzzy \"save the planet\" story as Apple moves to defuse criticism that the massive popularity of its devices is causing environmental issues by encouraging greater cobalt mining. Looking at the big picture, Apple is hoping to become entirely carbon-neutral by 2030, recycling not only cobalt, but also rare earth metals, tin soldering, gold plating, and even aluminum used in its products. At the same time, this is an economic story for Apple. According to a 2022 report from MacroPolo.org, cobalt is the single most expensive component (by weight) of rechargeable batteries, costing close to $60 per kilogram in 2021 -- about twice the price of lithium. So in announcing that it will recycle all its cobalt, Apple is presumably also aiming to cut the cost of its products -- and boost its own profit margins. Now whatGranted, just because Apple is recycling cobalt doesn't mean it's getting the recycled stuff for free. In fact, it may turn out that the cost of recycled cobalt is greater than the cost of buying newly mined cobalt. This remains to be seen -- and it's perhaps informative that in announcing its newest recycling initiative, Apple made no mention of cost savings. That being said, the added \"green\" credentials of being a 100%-recycled consumer of cobalt should help to offset any additional cost for these consumers. For ESG-focused consumers (and investors), it could even turn into a deciding factor when choosing whether to buy an iPhone, for example, or an Android phone -- or whether to invest in Apple stock versus Samsung.Factor in even the potential for cost savings as recycling technology improves over time, and this news looks like a plus for Apple -- maybe not big enough of a plus to justify paying 27 times earnings for a stock growing profits at only 8% per year, but a plus nonetheless.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"AAPL":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2981,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9954502886,"gmtCreate":1676440120845,"gmtModify":1676440124395,"author":{"id":"4116046903655472","authorId":"4116046903655472","name":"7mate34","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/e464589bf0fa038b72a6b8628440cef2","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4116046903655472","idStr":"4116046903655472"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Still lots lots of up side for long term value investor. The RIO Tinto Ltd (ASX: RIO) share price is up 3.60% today, while Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (ASX: FMG) shares are soaring 7.77%.Let’s take a look at what is going on with the BHP share price. What’s going on?BHP is a major iron ore producer. The company also explores copper, nickel, potash and metallurgical coal. The company’s share price momentum today follows a 4.2% lift in iron ore futures in the United States on Friday to US$107.44 a tonne. Overall, iron ore surged 15.9% last week.Iron ore futures on the Singapore Exchange are currently up 1.96% to US$108 per tonne.Commenting on the iron ore price, ANZ head of economics David Plank said in a research note that iron ore was “buoyed by China’s moves to support the property sector”. He added:These measures should have a better chance of developing into stronger demand for steel and iron ore.Meanwhile, BHP provided a non-price-sensitive update on an English High Court case today. BHP has filed a defence against a group action claim seeking damages for alleged losses related to the Fundao Dam collapse in 2015. The company bought so much it's now one of its top-10 holdings. As the world's largest semiconductor foundry, Taiwan Semiconductor manufactures integrated circuits based on designs provided by its clients, including the likes of Advanced Micro Devices, Broadcom, Intel, and Nvidia.Yet the industry has been mired in problems born of the COVID-19 pandemic, and shortages have been rife throughout the supply chain. Taiwan Semiconductor had lost some 40% of its value before the company reported better-than-expected third quarter earnings.Over the past month, and combined with Buffett's buy, the semiconductor stock has since climbed 27%, though its shares are still down 37% since the beginning of the year. With a market capitalization of over $350 billion, Taiwan Semiconductor needs to roughly triple from its current valuation to achieve trillion-dollar status. Is that feasible? Let's find out.An expanding global footprintAs noted, Taiwan Semiconductor counts some of the largest chip companies as customers. Because so many are U.S.-based tech stocks, last year it began construction of a $12 billion 5-nanometer chip fabrication plant in northern Arizona that should become operational in the first quarter of 2024 (TSM has had a presence in the state for 40 years). It's no coincidence that Apple recently announced that it will begin buying more of the chips it needs for its consumer electronics from a plant in Arizona that will become operational in 2024. Taiwan Semi already manufactures its A- and M-series processors, which are used in its iPhones and Mac computers. In fact, demand from customers is reportedly so strong that Taiwan Semiconductor says it will begin constructing a second plant in Arizona. It's also building a foundry in Japan. It already generates over half of all global foundry revenue and owns 84% of the sub-10 nanometer chip market.Out front and pulling awayFor as much as Buffett really disliked technology stocks early on, he has grown increasingly comfortable investing in the space -- Apple is his largest holding by far. It could be that he sees Taiwan Semiconductor in the same way: the dominant player in its field that few can touch, and that consumers absolutely rely upon. That's apparent in Taiwan Semiconductor's third-quarter earnings report, which showed revenue jumped 36% to $20.2 billion while profits surged 80% to $8.8 billion. While much of the rest of the world was constrained by shortages, the semiconductor leader previously said it had not been impacted much by the sector's downturn because long-term demand was \"firmly in place.\"Image source: Getty Images.Trends such as the rollout of 5G networks, the advent and importance of data centers for housing company information, and the increased growth among consumer electronics and autos kept its factories humming along. While it has struck a more cautious outlook today than it did after releasing its second-quarter report, trimming its expected capital expenditures for 2022 from $40 billion to $36 billion due to equipment delays, the long-term outlook for the chip stock remains bright.Trillion-dollar babyTaiwan Semiconductor's next closest competitor, United Microelectronics, is a distant second with just a 13% share of the market, and its next-gen N3 processor is generating such strong demand from the likes of Apple, AMD, and Intel that it is actually pressuring its engineering capacity. The semiconductor industry is definitely a cyclical one, so Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing will certainly have ups and downs in the years to come. It seems a good bet Taiwan Semiconductor could readily become a trillion-dollar stock within the next decade.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"TSM":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2901,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9985374394,"gmtCreate":1667337771319,"gmtModify":1676537898582,"author":{"id":"4116046903655472","authorId":"4116046903655472","name":"7mate34","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/e464589bf0fa038b72a6b8628440cef2","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4116046903655472","idStr":"4116046903655472"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"75 bps this time round","listText":"75 bps this time round","text":"75 bps this time round","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9985374394","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1252,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3479274819816427","authorId":"3479274819816427","name":"snugglo","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/78bec073397d54a68f80879dd87fd45c","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"authorIdStr":"3479274819816427","idStr":"3479274819816427"},"content":"The impact of interest rate increase is now small, mainly to see whether next year will continue to raise.","text":"The impact of interest rate increase is now small, mainly to see whether next year will continue to raise.","html":"The impact of interest rate increase is now small, mainly to see whether next year will continue to raise."}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9932617641,"gmtCreate":1662939250284,"gmtModify":1676537165224,"author":{"id":"4116046903655472","authorId":"4116046903655472","name":"7mate34","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/e464589bf0fa038b72a6b8628440cef2","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4116046903655472","idStr":"4116046903655472"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Maybe worth grabbing some IPO share","listText":"Maybe worth grabbing some IPO share","text":"Maybe worth grabbing some IPO share","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9932617641","repostId":"2265052724","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2265052724","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Dow Jones publishes the world’s most trusted business news and financial information in a variety of media.","home_visible":0,"media_name":"Dow Jones","id":"106","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/150f88aa4d182df19190059f4a365e99"},"pubTimestamp":1662449700,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2265052724?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-09-06 15:35","market":"hk","language":"en","title":"Volkswagen Plans IPO for Porsche Brand. The drop of the European-listed stocks is less than the U.S. ADRs because the value of the euro has declined vs. the U.S. dollar by about 13% so far in 2022. \n\n\n Write to Al Root at allen.root@dowjones.com \n\n\n \n\n\n$(END)$ Dow Jones Newswires\n\n\n September 06, 2022 03:35 ET (07:35 GMT)\n\n\n Copyright (c) 2022 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"08100":1,"POAHY":0.9,"ISBC":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1188,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9939848891,"gmtCreate":1662087432213,"gmtModify":1676536994871,"author":{"id":"4116046903655472","authorId":"4116046903655472","name":"7mate34","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/e464589bf0fa038b72a6b8628440cef2","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4116046903655472","idStr":"4116046903655472"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a href=\"https://ttm.financial/S/NET.AU\">$Netlinkz(NET.AU)$</a>is it a good time to buy in?","listText":"<a href=\"https://ttm.financial/S/NET.AU\">$Netlinkz(NET.AU)$</a>is it a good time to buy in?","text":"$Netlinkz(NET.AU)$is it a good time to buy in?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9939848891","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1379,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9939841687,"gmtCreate":1662087367650,"gmtModify":1676536994822,"author":{"id":"4116046903655472","authorId":"4116046903655472","name":"7mate34","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/e464589bf0fa038b72a6b8628440cef2","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4116046903655472","idStr":"4116046903655472"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"BHP is a long term play. This simply means that new investors buying shares aren’t entitled to the final FY22 dividend. In theory, BHP shares aren’t worth as much in the short-term if investors aren’t entitled to the large dividend. However, that’s old news now.Why is the BHP share price falling?Well, you’d need to ask each individual seller why they’re selling today, at a lower price. But, there could be a few different factors. It’s certainly possible that a few more investors decided to sell their shares after the ex-dividend date. But there could be other things happening. The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) is currently in the red by 0.25%, so BHP may be suffering from general market negativity, though BHP itself is responsible for a sizeable part of that decline considering BHP is such a large part of the overall ASX 200 index.Iron ore price sinksHowever, the thing that may be on investors’ minds the most is changing commodity prices. As a resource business, BHP’s ability to generate profit is heavily dependent on the commodity price. The costs of mining iron ore don’t really change whether the iron ore price is US$10 higher or US$10 lower per tonne. So, a higher price can largely add straight to the net profit after tax (NPAT) line (after paying the government a bit more). But the reverse is true when the iron ore price drops as well, which can hurt the BHP share price.Commsec pointed out that overnight:Iron ore futures slid US$8.37 or 8% to US$96.39 a tonne after the lockdown of Chengdu revived fears that the virus will continue to hamper China’s economic recovery. An 8% fall in the iron ore price is a hefty fall in one day.Lockdowns may not be permanent, but it does increase uncertainty for the market. However, iron ore isn’t BHP’s only commodity – its portfolio includes other resources like copper, nickel and potash. The company also recently tried to buy the ASX copper miner OZ Minerals Limited (ASX: OZL), but that was knocked back.BHP share price snapshotOver the last six months, BHP shares have dropped 24%.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"BHP":1,"BHP.AU":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1070,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9906318728,"gmtCreate":1659486297266,"gmtModify":1705980833994,"author":{"id":"4116046903655472","authorId":"4116046903655472","name":"7mate34","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/e464589bf0fa038b72a6b8628440cef2","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4116046903655472","idStr":"4116046903655472"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good on you","listText":"Good on you","text":"Good on you","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9906318728","repostId":"9901390976","repostType":1,"repost":{"id":9901390976,"gmtCreate":1659136878695,"gmtModify":1676536261337,"author":{"id":"3585783151794537","authorId":"3585783151794537","name":"jgaldon","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/71252dc922dc881c6099f238afdbe3f4","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3585783151794537","idStr":"3585783151794537"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a href=\"https://ttm.financial/S/WDS.AU\">$WOODSIDE ENERGY GROUP LTD(WDS.AU)$</a>These free BHP shares are the best for the mind...up or down...it's always 0% and green. One day, if the Gods allow, will sell all initial investments...and keep just the profit running. It seems a good bet Taiwan Semiconductor could readily become a trillion-dollar stock within the next decade.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"TSM":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2901,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":267844413861960,"gmtCreate":1706422756057,"gmtModify":1706423763123,"author":{"id":"4116046903655472","authorId":"4116046903655472","name":"7mate34","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/e464589bf0fa038b72a6b8628440cef2","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4116046903655472","authorIdStr":"4116046903655472"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a href=\"https://ttm.financial/S/03878\">$VICON HOLDINGS(03878)$ </a> stock showing some sign of possible up swing.
