most \"explosive\" piece of material in the financial world today comes from an article about Hormuz.ChannelFirst-line on-site reports.

Citrini Research, a Research institution that previously caused a storm in the market with its AI \"thought experiment\" report \"The Global Intelligence Crisis in 2028\" and even \"crashed\" the stock prices of a number of related companies, has now released another major geopolitical report. It caused quite a stir in traders, shipping insurance, and energy research circles for a simple reason: when markets were debating whether the strait should be opened or whether it would suddenly close, the report brought the discussion back to the forefront.

The report's protagonist is Citrini Research's mysterious \"Analyst No. 3\". Unlike common secondhand compilations, he chose to personally go to the vicinity of the strait to \"count ships,\" observe waterways, chat with locals and crew members, and record details of inspections, detentions, and risks encountered along the way. Many readers' first reaction after reading this is: this is more like a field reconnaissance log than a macro-level commentary made in the office—which is precisely the kind of impact that Citrini always has when it comes to \"bringing the market back to reality with details\".

Analyst No. 3 observed at the scene that the actual number of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz was significantly higher than the level shown in publicly available AIS data, indicating that the market systematically underestimated the actual flow. The key figures given in the report are glaring: \"Under the current environment, the AIS system misses approximately 50% of actual passing vessels every day.\"

More importantly, he describes the current state of the Strait as a state of \"dynamic law enforcement\": the Strait is not well suited to be summarized by the binary label of \"open/closed\", because the rules on the ground are changing, and so are the enforcers. The report states that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is dominating the new \"who can pass\" rules on site, and patrol boats and Shahed drones are frequently active, potentially amplifying the risk of volatility in the global oil and gas supply chain at any time.

How to fill in information gaps: On-site \"counting ships\" has become the most direct method.

The Strait of Hormuz acts like a \"master valve\" for global energy.U.S. energyThe Environmental Information Agency (EIA) has long estimated that the Strait of Hormuz carries a significant proportion of the world's seaborne crude oil and refined oil traffic (often cited as around 20%), and any news of \"misjudging the opening and closing\" will quickly be reflected in oil prices, freight rates, and insurance rates.

The problem is that the tools commonly used in the market—public AIS, some satellite images, and scattered anonymous intelligence—each have blind spots. In his report, Citrini made a very straightforward assessment: \"When there is a huge information gap in the market regarding whether the Strait is open or closed, the only direct and effective way is to count ships on site.\" This explains why the report has attracted attention: it provides scarce first-hand observation at the cost of extremely high personal risk.

\"High-risk forensics\" from Dubai to Musandam

Citrini's expedition route was detailed: Dubai → Fujairah oil port → Musandam province (Khasab) of Oman → attempting to enter the core waters of the strait by speedboat. The value of this route lies in the fact that it connects the entire chain of \"port - supply - border law enforcement - maritime passage\" for observation, rather than just focusing on the section of water in the middle of the strait.

He also brought unusual equipment for a business trip: a Leica zoom camera, recording glasses, an EPIRB distress signal, approximately $15,000 in cash, and even mentioned bringing a spare phone (including a...Xiaomi(Mobile phones) and supplies such as Zyn. The report had a distinctly on-site tone; for example, he described the trip as \"like writing a research report in a waterproof bag,\" ready to deal with seizures and emergencies at any time.

Key Findings 1: AIS is \"half gone,\" with hidden AIS and \"hidden corridors\" making up for it.

One of Citrini's most significant conclusions is a direct blow to the reliability of AIS. He wrote, \"In the current environment, the AIS system misses about 50% of actual passing vessels every day, and the publicly available data that the market relies on is no longer reliable.\" If we compare AIS to highway navigation and positioning, it can indeed display most vehicles, but when some vehicles \"turn off their positioning\" or take a path that is not marked on a publicly available map, a large area of the screen will appear empty.

He observed more ships passing through the site, especially some ships choosing permitted passages close to the Iranian coast, which he called \"hidden corridors\". Some of these vessels employ dark AIS (off signal) or do not fully rely on public tracking systems. For trading and risk control, this poses a real problem: using publicly available AIS to estimate whether \"traffic has dropped sharply\" may underestimate the actual traffic volume, thereby amplifying panic or mismatching the risk premium.

To support this point, the shipping industry body BIMCO, as well as some insurance and maritime reporting channels (such as the UKMTO's navigation safety reporting system), have long warned that in high-risk waters, whether or not AIS is activated is often subject to safety and avoidance strategies, and publicly available data is naturally biased. Citrini's contribution is that he quantifies this \"deviation\" into a more impactful approximation.

Key finding two: IRGC-led \"dynamic law enforcement\" makes the strait more like \"temporary traffic control.\"

At the security and political level, the report emphasizes that the logic of control over the Strait is changing. He wrote that the IRGC was developing and enforcing new passage rules on site, patrol boats and Shahed drones were frequently active, and the strait was in a state of “dynamic law enforcement.” To use a better analogy, it's somewhat like a key arterial road: the road isn't blocked, but traffic police are constantly setting up temporary lanes, conducting random checks, and releasing lists, causing the travel experience and risks to fluctuate on an hourly basis.

On sensitive issues, the report also leaves room for the market to understand: some regional security professionals believe that strengthening controls has its own border security and deterrence needs; Shipping companies and traders are more concerned about the unpredictability brought about by the temporary nature of the rules, because what the supply chain fears most is not \"high prices,\" but \"who knows when it will get stuck.\"

Inspection, detention, and \"signing commitments\": Why is this material considered costly?

The most immersive part of the report took place at the Omani border checkpoint. Citrini described being asked to sign a pledge \"not to take photographs, not to engage in journalism, and not to gather intelligence.\" He then took a GPS-free speedboat piloted by a stranger. The report stated that the speedboat was \"only 18 miles from the Iranian coast,\" and even included details of \"swimming and smoking cigars in the strait\" to illustrate how close he was to the actual waterway and law enforcement.

The more dramatic part is that he was intercepted and detained by the Omani coast guard, his mobile phone was confiscated, and his notes and photos may have fallen into official hands. For readers, the significance of such plots lies not in curiosity, but in explaining the fact that as data sources become increasingly difficult and publicly available information becomes more fragmented, the cost of first-hand observation is rising sharply, which directly affects the quality of information and pricing efficiency in the market.

How should the market assess \"Strait risks\" in the future?

A common question is, since publicly available AIS is unreliable, what else can the market trust?

A more realistic answer is to change \"single data source\" to \"multi-source puzzle\". The transaction and risk control team can cross-check publicly available AIS, commercial satellites (especially SAR, which is more friendly to nighttime and cloud cover), port loading and unloading and queuing data, changes in insurance quotes, and official maritime notifications. Think of it as using multiple cameras to look at the same intersection, and even if one camera is blocked, the overall traffic flow can still be reconstructed.

Another question is, how will this affect oil prices and shipping?

The EIA and the International Energy Agency (IEA) and other organizations have repeatedly emphasized the importance of Hormuz, and the risk premium often comes from the product of the \"probability of disruption × impact of disruption\". Citrini's report has enhanced the market's understanding of the \"impact\" aspect: the Strait is not experiencing a simple shutdown; passage patterns are changing, rules are more temporary, and risks are more like...spikePulse\". The transmission of such risks to option volatility, shipping costs, and insurance surcharges is typically more sensitive than to spot transactions.

Volatility comes from \"unpredictable temporary rules\"

Citrini is cautious about the future: IRGC-led on-site rules will make the Strait more prone to sudden frictions, and fluctuations in the global oil supply chain may more frequently exhibit the characteristics of being \"short-lived, intense, and difficult to verify.\" For markets, this environment rewards participants who are quick to respond and have more three-dimensional sources of information.

His advice is also clear: don't treat the strait as a switch, and don't treat AIS as the truth.

The report's phrase \"going to the site to count ships\" is striking because it reminds the market that when the information gap is large enough, risk control and research need to be closer to ground reality, even if the cost is high and the risk is high.

In short, the core point of the report is thatThe actual traffic volume in the Strait of Hormuz may be significantly higher than the publicly available AIS data.
