investors' confidence.While Tesla's stock split could provide a bigger catalyst than Amazon's did, Amazon's long-term prospects still appear to be better.Amazon is bigger than Tesla in nearly every way. Market cap, revenue, profits, number of employees -- you name it, and Amazon outsizes Tesla.But there's at least one way that Tesla just might come out on top versus the e-commerce and cloud hosting giant. Both companies decided to conduct stock splits this year. Here's why Tesla's stock split could be a bigger deal than Amazon's.Market timingAmazon's 20-for-1 stock split took effect on June 6. In retrospect, the timing of this split wasn't very good at all. The Nasdaq Composite Index was firmly in a bear market in June. The S&P 500 had recently flirted with bear market territory. Amazon's shares at the time were down 22%.Anyone hoping that the stock split would light a fire beneath Amazon stock was sorely disappointed. In the days after the split, Amazon's share price fell instead of moving higher.It's a much different scenario for Tesla on the cusp of its 3-for-1 stock split on Aug. 24. Some observers believe that the Nasdaq bear market is over even with a pullback in the past few days. The S&P 500 is clearly above the bear market threshold. Some are even cautiously optimistic that a new bull market could either be starting or will soon do so.Tesla stock is already picking up momentum. Over the past three months, the company's shares have jumped more than 30%.Neither Amazon nor Tesla could have known exactly how the stock market would perform when they announced their respective stock splits. However, it's abundantly clear that Tesla's timing is better than Amazon's.Investors are more likely to buy stocks when the overall market is climbing. There's a real possibility, therefore, that Tesla's stock split will provide a bigger catalyst than Amazon's stock split did.Wall Street optimismAnalysts also appear to be more optimistic about Tesla's prospects. Canaccord Genuity's George Gianarikas recently raised his 12-month price target on the stock to $881 from $815. There are also fewer sell ratings from analysts for Tesla in August than there have been in previous months.This improved Wall Street sentiment could cause investors to be more excited about Tesla's stock split. Amazon didn't benefit from similar enthusiasm back in June.A boost from Uncle SamTesla's stock split is also coming on the heels of the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act. This legislation attempts to address a wide range of issues. The most important one for Tesla is climate change.One of the provisions in the bill renews a $7,500 tax credit for Americans to purchase electric vehicles (EVs). Tesla's vehicles hadn't been eligible for this tax credit because the company has sold more than 200,000 EVs.But this tax credit cap will no longer be in place effective Jan. 1, 2023. Tesla's vehicles will again be eligible for the $7,500 credit. This could potentially boost the company's sales next year.Many investors are no doubt anticipating this catalyst. This knowledge could draw more buyers following Tesla's stock split on Wednesday than there would have been without the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act.What really mattersOf course, neither Amazon's nor Tesla's stock splits matter very much over the long term. Stock splits can sometimes attract smaller investors, but they don't change companies' underlying business prospects.My view is that Amazon should still top Tesla over the long run. While both companies face increased competition, Amazon appears to have a stronger moat than Tesla does. Amazon also has more avenues for delivering growth with its e-commerce and cloud businesses plus opportunities in healthcare, self-driving cars, and more.Sure, Tesla's stock split could be a bigger deal than Amazon's. This acceleration is due to multiple factors. The first one is the continuing strong performance from new products, and there is no sign that this trend is going to end. During the last quarter, Apple released iPhone SE with 5 G technology, iPad Air with M1 chip, all-new Mac Studio, and all-new Apple Studio Display.</p><p>As mentioned before, Apple currently has 1.8 B active device bases, and the number is expected to grow with the release of new products. This volatility dragged great companies like Apple along, and now Apple stock is trading below its pre-pandemic level (current P/E ratio of 23.8x vs. pre-pandemic P/E around 25.5x). Apple’s most recent annual revenue growth was 18.63% (vs. sector median of 19.98%). Given their leadership position and strong revenue, these revenue growth numbers are great. However, compared to hyper growth companies in the start-up or ramping-up phase with 50-60% growth rates, it’s hard to give out 4 or 5 stars.</p><h4><b>Margin of Safety - 5/5</b></h4><p>Apple is trading ~25% under intrinsic value at this point. The ongoing market volatility and tech sector struggles are providing a great opportunity to grab Apple’s shares under intrinsic value. Their P/E ratio is below pre-pandemic level, which just doesn&#39;t make sense.</p><h4><b>Sector Outlook - 4/5</b></h4><p>The tech sector will keep on growing at a rapid pace with new technology and markets, but the smartphone and laptop segments won’t be the fastest growing segment in tech. There will be adequate, but not exceptional, growth.</p><h2>Risk</h2><p>Apple&#39;s main segment is still the iPhone, and competition within the smartphone market is only increasing and getting complex. Also, consumer preference is diversifying in terms of preferred features (camera quality, computing/memory performance, weight/size, etc.). The iPhone family still commands a leadership position based on technological superiority, switching cost, and brand image, so I don&#39;t expect Apple to struggle. However, I wouldn&#39;t expect large growth from the iPhone segment in the future.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5030495bf9b76a7a51f6dd535431666c\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"370\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Global Smartphone Market Share (Counterpoint)</p><p>As mentioned before, Apple has been moving towards self-sufficiency by manufacturing their own parts. So far, the effort has impacted the business in a positive way by improving margins and mitigating supply chain disruption. However, relying on their own parts can result in isolation, lower technological development, and less market penetration. One example is the Japanese cellphone makers (Panasonic, Sharp, or NEC). They were way ahead in terms of innovation, but they failed to achieve global success. This is an extreme case, and I don&#39;t expect this will be the problem for Apple. However, investors should monitor whether Apple is maintaining its cutting-edge technology as they transition towards being more self-sufficient.</p><h2>Conclusion</h2><p>Apple has been an outstanding investment for a couple of decades at this point. Their technological superiority, brand image, and switching cost provide a great economic moat, and new products and services will keep their growth engine running. Based on their strong financials and market leading position, I expect Apple to excel in the foreseeable future. There will be adequate, but not exceptional, growth.RiskApple's main segment is still the iPhone, and competition within the smartphone market is only increasing and getting complex. Also, consumer preference is diversifying in terms of preferred features (camera quality, computing/memory performance, weight/size, etc.). The iPhone family still commands a leadership position based on technological superiority, switching cost, and brand image, so I don't expect Apple to struggle. However, I wouldn't expect large growth from the iPhone segment in the future.Global Smartphone Market Share (Counterpoint)As mentioned before, Apple has been moving towards self-sufficiency by manufacturing their own parts. So far, the effort has impacted the business in a positive way by improving margins and mitigating supply chain disruption. However, relying on their own parts can result in isolation, lower technological development, and less market penetration. One example is the Japanese cellphone makers (Panasonic, Sharp, or NEC). They were way ahead in terms of innovation, but they failed to achieve global success. This is an extreme case, and I don't expect this will be the problem for Apple. However, investors should monitor whether Apple is maintaining its cutting-edge technology as they transition towards being more self-sufficient.ConclusionApple has been an outstanding investment for a couple of decades at this point. Their technological superiority, brand image, and switching cost provide a great economic moat, and new products and services will keep their growth engine running. Based on their strong financials and market leading position, I expect Apple to excel in the foreseeable future. With the prices of oil and gasoline soaring, consumers and global governments are looking toward a future of renewable energy and less ICE vehicles. While the overall craziness around Tesla from years back seemed to have settled down, the future of the company could actually be reaching a critical point rather soon.</p><p>Part of the bull case for last year was the opening of two new factories that would help with the company&#39;s next leg of growth. As we&#39;ve seen with a number of past Tesla items, delays ensued, but things are finally progressing. The first deliveries from these factories should start in the coming months, although they aren&#39;t likely to make any meaningful contributions until much later this year. In terms of pure volume growth, the Berlin and Austin facilities are more important items for next year&#39;s delivery surge.</p><p>Now that these factories are starting to produce vehicles, I&#39;m curious to see how street analysts react. As I&#39;ve detailed in previous articles, the street has been extremely conservative with regard to Tesla in recent quarters. As the table below shows, one analyst even sees Q4 revenues this year coming in below last year&#39;s Q4 total sales figure. Most Tesla bulls see at least an extra 125,000 deliveries in this year&#39;s Q4, so how is it possible that the company report lower revenue? These extremely low estimates continue to drag overall averages down, which helps Tesla report delivery, revenue, and earnings beats that don&#39;t truly reflect the reality here.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6a3c38eb92e463dd471485692153ab34\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"111\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Tesla Revenue Estimates(Seeking Alpha Estimates Page)</p><p>As for the current quarter, total revenues are expected to be down a little sequentially, implying flat to slightly higher deliveries. That implies around 310,000 deliveries for Q1, a bit below my current expectation for 324,000. We got decent numbers out of China for January, and we&#39;re expected to get February numbers rather soon. Perhaps good data on that front will get the street average up a bit to a more realistic expectation.</p><p>With gasoline prices soaring in recent weeks, the spotlight on electric vehicles has certainly increased. However, Tesla also faces a hit from the Russia situation as the country is a key nickel producer, and other commodity prices have also soared. Cobalt, copper, and lithium carbonate prices are on the rise as well, which could dent Tesla&#39;s margins in the coming quarters unless the company raises prices again. The consumers being hurt the most by rising energy prices can&#39;t just go out and buy EVs that start at $60,000, which will impact the ongoing shift to electric vehicles.</p><p>Since Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck, for instance, prices of copper have nearly doubled, while cobalt, nickel, and lithium prices have more than doubled. That&#39;s going to make it hard for Tesla to achieve that sub $40,000 price point, unless it wants to lose a bit of money. For those arguing about massive battery savings coming up, just remember that the Model 3 starts at nearly $45,000 currently, and that&#39;s a much smaller vehicle and one that has been in mass production for years. Tesla is currently estimated to have well over a million reservations for the Cybertruck, so it will be interesting to see how many orders are canceled if prices jump 10%, 25%, or more once the vehicle actually comes to market.</p><p>Perhaps the biggest risk for Tesla currently doesn&#39;t actually involve everyday operations, as there are a number of ongoing high profile lawsuits involving the company and or Elon Musk. As the company&#39;s10-K filing details, a decision on the lawsuit against the SolarCity acquisition is due in the coming months. A trial related to the 2018 CEO award is scheduled for April, while another case involving the $420 going private transaction is scheduled for trial in May. At the same time, the SECis reportedly looking into Elon and Kimbal Musk for alleged insider trading charges. These legal actions could have widespread ramifications for Tesla, its executives, and board members, but to what degree is uncertain at this point.</p><p>As for Tesla shares, they remain in a very interesting place currently. While the overall craziness around Tesla from years back seemed to have settled down, the future of the company could actually be reaching a critical point rather soon.Part of the bull case for last year was the opening of two new factories that would help with the company's next leg of growth. As we've seen with a number of past Tesla items, delays ensued, but things are finally progressing. The first deliveries from these factories should start in the coming months, although they aren't likely to make any meaningful contributions until much later this year. In terms of pure volume growth, the Berlin and Austin facilities are more important items for next year's delivery surge.Now that these factories are starting to produce vehicles, I'm curious to see how street analysts react. As I've detailed in previous articles, the street has been extremely conservative with regard to Tesla in recent quarters. As the table below shows, one analyst even sees Q4 revenues this year coming in below last year's Q4 total sales figure. Most Tesla bulls see at least an extra 125,000 deliveries in this year's Q4, so how is it possible that the company report lower revenue? These extremely low estimates continue to drag overall averages down, which helps Tesla report delivery, revenue, and earnings beats that don't truly reflect the reality here.Tesla Revenue Estimates(Seeking Alpha Estimates Page)As for the current quarter, total revenues are expected to be down a little sequentially, implying flat to slightly higher deliveries. That implies around 310,000 deliveries for Q1, a bit below my current expectation for 324,000. We got decent numbers out of China for January, and we're expected to get February numbers rather soon. Perhaps good data on that front will get the street average up a bit to a more realistic expectation.With gasoline prices soaring in recent weeks, the spotlight on electric vehicles has certainly increased. However, Tesla also faces a hit from the Russia situation as the country is a key nickel producer, and other commodity prices have also soared. Cobalt, copper, and lithium carbonate prices are on the rise as well, which could dent Tesla's margins in the coming quarters unless the company raises prices again. The consumers being hurt the most by rising energy prices can't just go out and buy EVs that start at $60,000, which will impact the ongoing shift to electric vehicles.Since Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck, for instance, prices of copper have nearly doubled, while cobalt, nickel, and lithium prices have more than doubled. That's going to make it hard for Tesla to achieve that sub $40,000 price point, unless it wants to lose a bit of money. For those arguing about massive battery savings coming up, just remember that the Model 3 starts at nearly $45,000 currently, and that's a much smaller vehicle and one that has been in mass production for years. Tesla is currently estimated to have well over a million reservations for the Cybertruck, so it will be interesting to see how many orders are canceled if prices jump 10%, 25%, or more once the vehicle actually comes to market.Perhaps the biggest risk for Tesla currently doesn't actually involve everyday operations, as there are a number of ongoing high profile lawsuits involving the company and or Elon Musk. As the company's10-K filing details, a decision on the lawsuit against the SolarCity acquisition is due in the coming months. A trial related to the 2018 CEO award is scheduled for April, while another case involving the $420 going private transaction is scheduled for trial in May. At the same time, the SECis reportedly looking into Elon and Kimbal Musk for alleged insider trading charges. These legal actions could have widespread ramifications for Tesla, its executives, and board members, but to what degree is uncertain at this point.As for Tesla shares, they remain in a very interesting place currently. Market cap, revenue, profits, number of employees -- you name it, and Amazon outsizes Tesla.But there's at least one way that Tesla just might come out on top versus the e-commerce and cloud hosting giant. Both companies decided to conduct stock splits this year. Here's why Tesla's stock split could be a bigger deal than Amazon's.Market timingAmazon's 20-for-1 stock split took effect on June 6. In retrospect, the timing of this split wasn't very good at all. The Nasdaq Composite Index was firmly in a bear market in June. The S&P 500 had recently flirted with bear market territory. Amazon's shares at the time were down 22%.Anyone hoping that the stock split would light a fire beneath Amazon stock was sorely disappointed. In the days after the split, Amazon's share price fell instead of moving higher.It's a much different scenario for Tesla on the cusp of its 3-for-1 stock split on Aug. 24. Some observers believe that the Nasdaq bear market is over even with a pullback in the past few days. The S&P 500 is clearly above the bear market threshold. Some are even cautiously optimistic that a new bull market could either be starting or will soon do so.Tesla stock is already picking up momentum. Over the past three months, the company's shares have jumped more than 30%.Neither Amazon nor Tesla could have known exactly how the stock market would perform when they announced their respective stock splits. However, it's abundantly clear that Tesla's timing is better than Amazon's.Investors are more likely to buy stocks when the overall market is climbing. There's a real possibility, therefore, that Tesla's stock split will provide a bigger catalyst than Amazon's stock split did.Wall Street optimismAnalysts also appear to be more optimistic about Tesla's prospects. Canaccord Genuity's George Gianarikas recently raised his 12-month price target on the stock to $881 from $815. There are also fewer sell ratings from analysts for Tesla in August than there have been in previous months.This improved Wall Street sentiment could cause investors to be more excited about Tesla's stock split. Amazon didn't benefit from similar enthusiasm back in June.A boost from Uncle SamTesla's stock split is also coming on the heels of the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act.
