At the central bank’s virtual Jackson Hole conference on Friday, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell reiterated that a taper—the term referring to the Fed’s wind-down of asset purchasing—might be coming by the end of this year. Many analysts expect Powell to offer more details at the Federal Open Market Committee’s September or November meetings.</p>\n<p>Although Powell has struck a relatively dovish tone on the tapering plan, some worry that both the stock and bond markets could see some volatility following the move in a “taper tantrum.”</p>\n<p>Still, even if there is such a selloff, some stocks would survive better than others. The last time the Fed slowed down its pace of bond buying, in May 2013, the best-performing sectors in the following months were materials and industrials.</p>\n<p>This time around, these sectors have even more tailwinds behind them. The $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act has recently passed the Senate. If passed by the House and signed into law, the act will give companies in the material and industrial sector a significant revenue boost in the next few years. This could offset some of the headwinds from the Fed.</p>\n<p>Less Fed money in the market could cause trouble for companies that are tight on cash and reliant on funds raised from the bond market. Within these sectors, investors should look for companies that have more cash on their balance sheets and can make efficient use of them.</p>\n<p>Barron’s screened for S&amp;P 500 stocks within the industrial and material sectors that meet three criteria:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Cash flow per share, which indicates how much cash a company generates for each outstanding share. For the purposes of our screen, it needed to be more than 10.</li>\n <li>The share price to cash flow, indicating how much investors pay for every dollar of cash flow, which needed to be lower than 20;</li>\n <li>The return on equity, which determines how much profit a company earns for every dollar of asset and which needed to be more than 30.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>This has left us with nine names that are rich in cash and efficient with their capital deployment. They are more likely to continue marching ahead even when the Fed takes its feet off the gas. Wall Street consensus shows that analysts expect to see more upside in all these stocks in the next 12 months.</p>\n<p>The nine are: United Parcel Service (UPS), Union Pacific (UNP), Deere (DE), 3M (MMM), Lockheed Martin (LMT), Northrop Grumman (NOC), LyondellBasell Industries (LYB), W.W. At the central bank’s virtual Jackson Hole conference on Friday, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell reiterated that a taper—the term referring to the Fed’s wind-down of asset purchasing—might be coming by the end of this year. Many analysts expect Powell to offer more details at the Federal Open Market Committee’s September or November meetings.\nAlthough Powell has struck a relatively dovish tone on the tapering plan, some worry that both the stock and bond markets could see some volatility following the move in a “taper tantrum.”\nStill, even if there is such a selloff, some stocks would survive better than others. him in the first all-civilian crew ever launched on a flight to Earth orbit.\nThe quartet of amateur space travellers, led by the American founder and chief executive of e-commerce firm Shift4 Payments Inc Jared Isaacman, lifted off at 8.03pm EDT (0003 GMT Thursday) from the Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral.\nA SpaceX webcast of the launch showed Isaacman, 38, and his crewmates – Sian Proctor, 51, Hayley Arceneaux, 29, and Chris Sembroski, 42 – strapped into the pressurised cabin of their gleaming white SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, dubbed Resilience, wearing their helmeted The index has returned 376% over the past decade, or close to 17% a year, compounded. Among active managers tasked with beating the index, four out of five failed during the 10 years through 2020.</p>\n<p>For Bogleheads, as devotees of the late Vanguard founder and indexing pioneer John Bogle call themselves, the explanation is simple: Stock-picking is futile. But if that’s so, the typical active manager should do no better or worse than indexes on underlying stock performance, and underperform only to the extent he or she charges extra fees. In fact, they have trailed over 10 years by an average of 2.5% a year. Stinking that badly is a skill of its own—one that theoretically shouldn’t exist.</p>\n<p>Another explanation is that the S&amp;P 500’s popularity has created its own tailwind. “Flows into index funds raise the prices of large stocks,” conclude researchers from Michigan State University, the London School of Economics, and the University of California, Irvine,in a working paper&nbsp;that has been circulating since late last year. By now, you’ve heard that five companies&nbsp;—&nbsp;Apple,Microsoft,Alphabet,Amazon.com,and&nbsp;Facebook—combined for one-quarter of the S&amp;P 500’s market value. But all are still growing nicely, so why worry now?</p>\n<p>This past Tuesday, Lisa Shalett, chief investment officer at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, predicted a 10% to 15% slide for the S&amp;P 500 before year’s end, but she says that doesn’t make her bearish. She points out that most 12-month stretches contain a big pullback for the index, but that we haven’t had one since March 2020. Tech giants, she has noticed, have lately traded hand-in-hand with Treasuries, suggesting that investors have come to view them as havens.</p>\n<p>“Owning the index today in a global context is a relatively defensive position, and we believe that it’s time to play offense,” she says.</p>\n<p>In Shalett’s view, interest rates will rise as global economies rebound, putting pressure on stock valuations. But it referred to the change as a mark to market—something typically done obligingly by accountants, not enthusiastically by forecasters. Also, the new target implies a decline of 5% or so from recent levels. Indexers have already made an easy 20% this year, so why sweat a holiday haircut? Because the bank is also predicting a 10-year average loss in the index of 0.8% a year.</p>\n<p>It’s devilishly difficult to predict short-term stock market returns. I tend to follow such forecasts more for the rationales than the targets. But long-term returns might be more closely linked than short-term ones to starting valuations, making forecasting more feasible. BofA says one measure has predicted about 80% of 10-year returns for the S&amp;P 500 since 1987: the ratio of the index’s price to what the bank calls its normalized earnings for the past 12 months. And on average, these downturns have lasted 390 days, with the index falling 36% from its high.</p>\n<p>Here's the good news: Over the same period, the typical bull market has run for 2,100 days, sending the index up 192%. Put another way, bull markets tend to erase all losses and then some. That's why market downturns are often a buying opportunity.</p>\n<p>So how can you beat a market crash? First, don't panic sell. Remember that every past downturn has ended with the market hitting new highs. Second, have a game plan. Keep a watch list of stocks you plan to buy if prices plummet. For instance, <b>Nvidia</b> and <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CRM\">Salesforce</a>.com</b> are on my list. Not surprisingly, these chips excel at compute-intensive tasks like analytics and artificial intelligence, and Nvidia's brand name has become synonymous with high-performance computing.</p>\n<p>To reinforce that advantage, Nvidia acquired networking specialist Mellanox last year. Since then, the two have collaborated to deliver a brand new chip: the data processing unit. This chip offloads networking tasks, freeing central processing units to run applications, which boosts data center performance and security.</p>\n<p>Of course, a new product is good for Nvidia's top line, but there's a bigger picture taking shape. As Nvidia's computing platform expands (i.e., <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> chip to two chips), the company can build more comprehensive solutions for its data center clients. In April, the company unveiled the Grace CPU, once again extending its computing platform. This new data center chip will launch in 2023, featuring energy efficient ARM cores. More importantly, it will deliver 10 times the performance of today's fastest servers, helping clients tackle complex AI workloads.</p>\n<p>Here's the bottom line: Artificial intelligence is one of the most transformative technologies ever invented by the human race, and it will reshape the world in the years ahead. More to the point, Nvidia values the data center market at $100 billion&nbsp;by 2024. And as the industry leader, it's well positioned to capitalize on that opportunity. That's why this growth stock looks like a smart investment, especially if a market crash slashes the share price.</p>\n<p>2. Salesforce</p>\n<p>Salesforce specializes in customer relationship management. Its Customer 360 platform comprises a range of software designed to unify data across sales, services, marketing, and commerce, driving productivity by giving brands a complete view of each customer.</p>\n<p>The cloud platform also includes tools for AI-powered insights and visual analytics, as well as low-code software development and external data integration. In short, Salesforce is an end-to-end solution for CRM, helping clients handle every stage of the customer lifecycle.</p>\n<p>Recently, research firm <b>Gartner</b> recognized Salesforce as the CRM industry leader, suggesting that the company has a greater ability to execute and a more complete vision than any of its rivals. Of course, Salesforce has been growing much faster in recent years, and if it can maintain that momentum, the company is well positioned to take more market share.</p>\n<p>Here's the bottom line: If the market crashes, Salesforce stock will likely plunge right alongside the broader indexes. But that's OK! Short-term headwinds give long-term investors a chance to buy shares on sale. In other words, bear markets take place about once every six years. And on average, these downturns have lasted 390 days, with the index falling 36% from its high.\nHere's the good news: Over the same period, the typical bull market has run for 2,100 days, sending the index up 192%. Put another way, bull markets tend to erase all losses and then some. That's why market downturns are often a buying opportunity.\nSo how can you beat a market crash? First, don't panic sell. Remember that every past downturn has ended with the market hitting new highs. Second, have a game plan. Keep a watch list of stocks you plan to buy if prices plummet. As Nvidia's computing platform expands (i.e., one chip to two chips), the company can build more comprehensive solutions for its data center clients. More importantly, it will deliver 10 times the performance of today's fastest servers, helping clients tackle complex AI workloads.\nHere's the bottom line: Artificial intelligence is one of the most transformative technologies ever invented by the human race, and it will reshape the world in the years ahead. More to the point, Nvidia values the data center market at $100 billion by 2024. And as the industry leader, it's well positioned to capitalize on that opportunity. That's why this growth stock looks like a smart investment, especially if a market crash slashes the share price.\n2. Salesforce\nSalesforce specializes in customer relationship management. Its Customer 360 platform comprises a range of software designed to unify data across sales, services, marketing, and commerce, driving productivity by giving brands a complete view of each customer.\nThe cloud platform also includes tools for AI-powered insights and visual analytics, as well as low-code software development and external data integration. In short, Salesforce is an end-to-end solution for CRM, helping clients handle every stage of the customer lifecycle.\nRecently, research firm Gartner recognized Salesforce as the CRM industry leader, suggesting that the company has a greater ability to execute and a more complete vision than any of its rivals. Ford is a legacy auto maker that is working to catch up and eventually make a full transition to electric vehicles. Shares of Nio have more than tripled in the past year, while Ford's have almost doubled after cratering in the previous decade.</p>\n<p>So where does Nio <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NIO\">$(NIO)$</a>, which reported second-quarter results after the stock market closes Wednesday, fit in an investment thesis? Below are screens showing how its stock valuation compares to vehicle production, and how that valuation relates to projected earnings through 2025.</p>\n<p><b>Doubling car production</b></p>\n<p>For the second quarter, Nio delivered 21,896 vehicles for a 112% increase from a year earlier. The growth is impressive, but the total number of vehicles sold is still relatively small.</p>\n<p>Here's a look at the 10 largest auto makers by market capitalization, along with their second-quarter sales or delivery numbers (whichever was higher, if both were reported) and additional color below the table:</p>\n<img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d9e9aed76c94544dbe44cde9f7c8bebc\" tg-width=\"931\" tg-height=\"761\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\">\n<table>\n <tbody>\n  <tr></tr>\n </tbody>\n</table>\n<p>You can see that those valuations are about the future, when innovators in the EV space -- Tesla Inc.&nbsp;and Nio, on this list -- may (or may not) become as large as legacy players.</p>\n<p>For now, Ford churns out mostly internal combustion engine&nbsp;vehicles at nearly 35 times the rate that Nio makes EVs.</p>\n<p>One thing to be aware of is that the legacy auto makers don't all report their unit sales the same way. Most don't break out electric vehicle sales.</p>\n<p>Among those that do, definitions vary. For example, Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.TO) reported that \"electrified vehicle\" sales made up 26.6% of total auto sales during the second quarter. But that category includes:</p>\n<p>For Toyota, BEV made up only 0.2% of second-quarter sales, while they accounted for 100% of sales for Nio and Tesla. Toyota's PHEV sales made up 1.4% of the total.</p>\n<p>Volkswagen AG reports electric-vehicle sales as including PHEV, which accounted for 6.7% of second-quarter sales, or BEV, which made up 4.4% of total sales. Those are impressive numbers: a combined 11.1%.</p>\n<p>For Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft , better known as BWM Group, a second-quarter breakdown of electric-vehicle deliveries isn't yet available, but for the first half of 2021, 153,243 all-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles were delivered, or 11.4% of total deliveries.</p>\n<p><b>Valuation to earnings estimates</b></p>\n<p>For companies at early stages, comparisons of price-to-earnings ratios may not mean very much. Such companies are focusing on growth rather than profits. An example of this has been Amazon.com Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AMZN\">$(AMZN)$</a>, which has traded at a high P/E for decades as it has worked to expand into new lines of business, at the expense of the bottom line.</p>\n<p>A high P/E ratio can reflect investors' enthusiasm for innovation and in the case of EVs, a political consensus for transforming the industry. So Nio and Tesla trade at much higher P/E ratios than the legacy auto makers.</p>\n<p>Then again, very low P/E may show too much contempt among investors for the older manufacturers, as they use their cash flow from continuing massive sales of traditional vehicles to fund their development of EVs. Opportunities may be highlighted.</p>\n<p>Normally a forward P/E ratio is calculated by dividing the share price by a rolling consensus estimate of earnings per share for 12 months. This isn't available for all the companies listed here, so we're using consensus estimates for net income for calendar 2022.</p>\n<p>First, here are P/E ratios based on current market caps and consensus 2022 estimates among analysts polled by FactSet. Those are impressive numbers: a combined 11.1%.\nFor Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft , better known as BWM Group, a second-quarter breakdown of electric-vehicle deliveries isn't yet available, but for the first half of 2021, 153,243 all-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles were delivered, or 11.4% of total deliveries.\nValuation to earnings estimates\nFor companies at early stages, comparisons of price-to-earnings ratios may not mean very much. Such companies are focusing on growth rather than profits. An example of this has been Amazon.com Inc. $(AMZN)$, which has traded at a high P/E for decades as it has worked to expand into new lines of business, at the expense of the bottom line.\nA high P/E ratio can reflect investors' enthusiasm for innovation and in the case of EVs, a political consensus for transforming the industry. So Nio and Tesla trade at much higher P/E ratios than the legacy auto makers.\nThen again, very low P/E may show too much contempt among investors for the older manufacturers, as they use their cash flow from continuing massive sales of traditional vehicles to fund their development of EVs. The obverse of the famous advice from Richard Nixon’s attorney general, John Mitchell, is what economists and market participants will be doing on Wednesday, when the panel may elucidate its policy plans but is unlikely to take any immediate action.</p><p>To be sure, stock and bond markets have started 2022 by adjusting to the reality of a less accommodative Federal Reserve monetary policy ahead. The benchmark 10-year Treasury note’s yield is up 34 basis points since the turn of the year, at 1.836% on Thursday, while the Nasdaq Composite has entered a so-called 10% correction from its peak last November. And the federal-funds futures market has fully priced in an initial 25-basis-point increase in the Fed’s key policy rate, from the current ground-hugging 0% to 0.25%, at the March 15-16 FOMC gathering, according to the CME FedWatch site. (A basis point is 1/100th of a percentage point.)</p><p>But no rate increase is likely this week, despite a growing consensus (including from President Joe Biden) on the need for a less accommodative Fed policy, given the sharp rise of inflation. At his news conference on Wednesday, Biden expressed support for Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s plan to “recalibrate” policy. “The critical job of making sure that the elevated prices don’t become entrenched rests with the Federal Reserve, which has a dual mandate: full employment and stable prices,” the president said.</p><p>That’s a sharp reversal of the pressure often exerted by past presidents for easier money. From Lyndon B. Johnson to Nixon and Donald Trump, presidents have variously tried to cajole or coerce Fed chairmen into lower interest rates or avoid raising them, while George H.W. Bush blamed a too-tight Fed for his electoral defeat. But now, inflation’s surge to 7% tops the list of concerns in consumer surveys, coinciding with the slide in Biden’s poll ratings, so his endorsement of a less accommodative Fed policy appears to be a matter of political necessity.</p><p>So acute have inflation concerns become that some observers are urging more immediate and dramatic actions. That includes calls for a 50-basis-point jump in the fed-funds rate, as I wrote this past week on Barrons.com, or a complete halt in the Fed’s securities purchases, as I noted here a week ago, rather than the present path of winding down its buying by March.</p><p>But both would be out of character for the Powell Fed. “I can’t imagine another big pivot,” says John Ryding, chief economic advisor at Brean Capital. For most of 2021, the monetary authorities clung to the notion of “transitory” inflation. A sharp, initial 50-basis-point hike would be an admission of how they misjudged the building price pressures, he says.</p><p>Neither does Ryding look for the Fed to emulate the Bank of Canada, which abruptly ended its securities purchases last year. “What I hope to get is clarity” from the FOMC meeting in the coming week, he added in a telephone interview.</p><p>One possible surprise would be for the FOMC to further accelerate the tapering of the purchases, winding them up by mid-February, a month earlier than currently scheduled, write Nomura economists Aichi Amemiya, Robert Dent, and Kenny Lee in a client note. That would represent a marginal reduction of $20 billion in Treasury and $10 billion in agency mortgage-backed securities acquisitions, but would send a signal to the market about the Fed’s anti-inflation resolve.</p><p>In particular, they add, a quicker windup in the Fed’s bond buying might help avoid some awkward questions for Powell at his postmeeting news conference on Wednesday afternoon. The central bank continues to buy $40 billion of Treasuries and $20 billion a month in MBS, adding to its near-$9-trillion balance sheet, which means that it is actually easing, rather than tightening, policy, while talking of the need to curb inflation.</p><p>As for the Fed beginning to normalize its balance sheet, the Nomura economists think the announcement could come as early as the March or May FOMC meeting. Most Fed watchers expect a later start to the process of reducing the central bank’s securities holdings, after two or more rate hikes. And almost all think the Fed will allow maturing issues to run off at a predictable pace, rather than sell securities outright.</p><p>Some also suggest that the Fed could reduce its holdings of mortgage-backed securities more rapidly. The Fed has expressed a preference to returning to holding only Treasuries on its balance sheet, as was the case before the 2007-09 financial crisis, Ryding notes. And for months, many critics have argued that effectively subsidizing an already overheated housing market by buying MBS makes no sense.</p><p>But the relative economic and financial impact of changes in these two main monetary policy tools—interest rates and the central bank’s asset holdings—is unknown, he says. The Fed traditionally has utilized the fed-funds rate as its main policy lever and resorted to a huge expansion in its balance sheet when its key policy rate fell to the zero lower bound. Unlike other central banks, notably the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan, the Fed has avoided resorting to negative interest rates.</p><p>Economists Cynthia Wu of Notre Dame and Fan Dora Xia of the Bank for International Settlements have estimated that the equivalent impact of the Fed’s asset purchases in what they dub a “shadow fed-funds rate,” which is tracked by the Atlanta Fed. The Wu-Xia shadow funds rate was minus 1.15% as of Dec. 31, according to the Atlanta Fed.</p><p>Ryding says Wu estimates that a change in the Fed’s balance sheet equal to 10% of U.S. gross domestic product—about $2 trillion—is roughly equivalent to a 100 basis point change in the fed-funds rate.</p><p>How central bank bond-buying affects the economy is still debated among economists. Most see asset purchases working through what they call the portfolio channel. As former Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke explained in a Washington Post op-ed article in November 2010, the central bank buys securities to ease financial conditions, including to raise stock prices, which in turn boosts consumers’ wealth and confidence, and spurs spending.</p><p>And as the intriguing accompanying charts from Deutsche Bank’s head of thematic research Jim Reid illustrate, the big global tech growth stocks have moved in lockstep with the assets of the major central banks. The FANG+ group used in the chart consists of Meta Platforms (the former Facebook, ticker: FB), Amazon.com (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), and Google parent Alphabet (GOOGL), plus Alibaba Group Holding (BABA), Baidu (BIDU), Nvidia (NVDA), Tesla (TSLA), and Twitter (TWTR). The big five central banks are the Fed, the ECB, the People’s Bank of China, the BoJ, and the Bank of England.</p><p>“Correlation does not imply causation, but unless you are an incredibly strong advocate of a completely new earnings paradigm for the largest technology companies that coincidently have tracked unconventional monetary policy, then it is hard to argue against the notion that central bank policies have been a big contributor to an incredible run for the sector over the last six-to-seven years. Indeed, the only notable setback has been when global [quantitative tightening] arrived in 2018,” Reid observes in a client note.</p><p>The 13% decline in the FANG+ index from its November peak through Thursday is a bit steeper than the 11.5% drop in the popular Invesco QQQ exchange-traded fund (QQQ) that tracks the biggest Nasdaq nonfinancial stocks. And that’s before the Fed actually has begun to shrink its balance sheet.</p><p>The Fed has maintained its crisis policy of zero interest rates and active bond buying, initiated in March 2020 during the near-meltdown of markets resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. The virus and its variants persist, but the economy has largely recovered, with the unemployment rate under 4% and the labor market beset by worker shortages. Inflation, meanwhile, has soared to 7% from a combination of supply constraints and pumped-up demand.</p><p>And nowhere is the impact of Fed policy more apparent than in asset prices, from the doubling of the S&amp;P 500 since its March 2020 bottom, to home prices jumping about 20%. The benchmark 10-year Treasury note’s yield is up 34 basis points since the turn of the year, at 1.836% on Thursday, while the Nasdaq Composite has entered a so-called 10% correction from its peak last November. And the federal-funds futures market has fully priced in an initial 25-basis-point increase in the Fed’s key policy rate, from the current ground-hugging 0% to 0.25%, at the March 15-16 FOMC gathering, according to the CME FedWatch site. (A basis point is 1/100th of a percentage point.)But no rate increase is likely this week, despite a growing consensus (including from President Joe Biden) on the need for a less accommodative Fed policy, given the sharp rise of inflation. At his news conference on Wednesday, Biden expressed support for Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s plan to “recalibrate” policy. “The critical job of making sure that the elevated prices don’t become entrenched rests with the Federal Reserve, which has a dual mandate: full employment and stable prices,” the president said.That’s a sharp reversal of the pressure often exerted by past presidents for easier money. From Lyndon B. Johnson to Nixon and Donald Trump, presidents have variously tried to cajole or coerce Fed chairmen into lower interest rates or avoid raising them, while George H.W.
