One stock that I think is at particular risk of crumbling further is Beyond Meat (BYND), one of the first purveyors of the faux-meat trend and one of the most recognizable brands in the space.</p>\n<p>Despite the growing appeal of plant-based meats, I continue to see huge fundamental flaws in this stock. The market seems to agree, as Beyond Meat shares have slid by roughly half relative to all-time highs around ~$200 notched last October.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9414d1f0d7b86d62d6febcd8fcfae596\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"417\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>In my view, Beyond Meat shares have even more downside left. I continue to cite that there's a \"story\" risk to Beyond Meat: plant-based meats are popular now, but are they a passing dietary fad? The list of diet fads is a long one, ranging from keto diets and paleo diets to complete-nutrient drinks like Huel. While Beyond Meat may find itself a core customer base, I view the category's growth to be limited especially with concerns that plant-based meats are unhealthy from a sodium angle.</p>\n<p>Yet there are shorter-term risks here, too. In particular, investors should be aware that Beyond Meat's growth and demand indicators have weakened in recent quarters. Profit margin slippage is another big concern, especially when the stock is still trading so expensively as a multiple of outer-year profits.</p>\n<p>The bottom line here: Beyond Meat is a spoiling stock, and I think there's little the company can do to get back on the right track.</p>\n<p><b>Slowing growth, decaying velocity</b></p>\n<p>The first thing investors should note is that Beyond Meat has missed Wall Street's expectations for three quarters in a row. It's a small wonder that the stock has landed in investors' \"penalty box\" - in a time when a reliable \"beat and raise\" cadence has become expected for growth stocks, Beyond Meat's earnings gaffes are a huge sore spot.</p>\n<p>In Beyond Meat's most recent quarter (Q1), the company saw relatively tepid 11% y/y growth to $108.2 million in revenue, missing Wall Street's expectations of $113.3 million (+17% y/y) by a huge six-point margin. As shown below, that's an even wider miss than the $2 million gap to expectations in Q4:</p>\n<p>Figure 1. Beyond Meat earnings vs. expectations</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/16650777bf67af7d8aa78be81ba77793\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"220\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Seeking Alpha</span></p>\n<p>At a channel level, in Q1, Beyond Meat its U.S. retail sales grow by 28% y/y, but foodservice sales domestically saw a -26% y/y decline. This is concerning because throughout the March quarter, most areas and restaurants around the country had already lifted lockdown restrictions. We note that the kinds of chain locations that Beyond Meat is typically sold at, from Carls' Jr. to Dunkin' Donuts (DNKN), largely remained open during the pandemic anyway. So Beyond Meat can't really say that lockdowns and the pandemic were to blame for weaker foodservice sales: perhaps the pandemic had ended up ultimately changing consumers' menu preferences toward \"real\" meat, which is often also substantially cheaper than Beyond Meat.</p>\n<p>On the retail side, we note that Beyond Meat's velocity is dropping (a measure of how quickly inventory is selling through on store shelves). Beyond Meat argued that during the pandemic, retail sell-through was constrained by limited supply - but now, what you can see in the chart below is that retail velocity has dramatically dropped over the past four weeks. The company noted that on a year over year basis, velocity is down -18% y/y in Q1.</p>\n<p>Figure 2. The past four weeks only saw Beyond Meat expanding its market share by 127bps, versus 319bps over the past year.</p>\n<p><b>Margin decay</b></p>\n<p>Slowing growth isn't the only troubling indicator for Beyond Meat. The company's gross margin profile, already thin to begin with, is at risk as well. We note that in Beyond Meat's most recent quarter, gross margin slipped to 30.2%, a huge 860bps reduction from 38.8% in the year-ago quarter.</p>\n<p>Figure 3. The company blamed the decay on rising storage/warehousing and transportation costs, which is similar to what many other consumer products companies are citing. Even more concerning, however, the company has cited rising fixed overhead costs at its production facilities. And perhaps riskiest of all is the fact that Beyond Meat notes that unfavorable product mix and higher trade discounts have also worked to push margins down.<b>In spite of the fact that Beyond Meat leaned in more heavily on trade discounts to grow sales, the company still saw tepid revenue growth and thinning market share gains.</b></p>\n<p>We note as well that Beyond Meat's adjusted EBITDA gains of $13.9 million from last Q1 turned into a -$10.8 million loss in the most recent Q1, indicating a 24-point decay in adjusted EBITDA margins. We have to wonder: is Beyond Meat structurally set up to be a profitable business?</p>\n<p>The company likes to tout the fact that it spends ~8% of its revenue on R&amp;D as a positive signal of the brand's innovation. But the other brands shown on the company's below slide are also innovators. Food brands like Kellogg and Kraft Heinz are constantly coming up with new cereal types and new flavors of their existing foods. Beyond Meat doesn't have a sole claim to innovation in the food space - yet it's spending considerably more than its peers on R&amp;D. When we note the fact that Beyond Meat's gross margin is only ~30% to begin with, spending a further 8% of revenue on R&amp;D is a steep ask.</p>\n<p>Figure 4. As shown in the chart below, the company is only expected to pass breakeven in 2023.</p>\n<p>Figure 5. One stock that I think is at particular risk of crumbling further is Beyond Meat (BYND), one of the first purveyors of the faux-meat trend and one of the most recognizable brands in the space.\nDespite the growing appeal of plant-based meats, I continue to see huge fundamental flaws in this stock. The market seems to agree, as Beyond Meat shares have slid by roughly half relative to all-time highs around ~$200 notched last October.\nData by YCharts\nIn my view, Beyond Meat shares have even more downside left. I continue to cite that there's a \"story\" risk to Beyond Meat: plant-based meats are popular now, but are they a passing dietary fad? The list of diet fads is a long one, ranging from keto diets and paleo diets to complete-nutrient drinks like Huel. While Beyond Meat may find itself a core customer base, I view the category's growth to be limited especially with concerns that plant-based meats are unhealthy from a sodium angle.\nYet there are shorter-term risks here, too. In particular, investors should be aware that Beyond Meat's growth and demand indicators have weakened in recent quarters. Profit margin slippage is another big concern, especially when the stock is still trading so expensively as a multiple of outer-year profits.\nThe bottom line here: Beyond Meat is a spoiling stock, and I think there's little the company can do to get back on the right track.\nSlowing growth, decaying velocity\nThe first thing investors should note is that Beyond Meat has missed Wall Street's expectations for three quarters in a row. It's a small wonder that the stock has landed in investors' \"penalty box\" - in a time when a reliable \"beat and raise\" cadence has become expected for growth stocks, Beyond Meat's earnings gaffes are a huge sore spot.\nIn Beyond Meat's most recent quarter (Q1), the company saw relatively tepid 11% y/y growth to $108.2 million in revenue, missing Wall Street's expectations of $113.3 million (+17% y/y) by a huge six-point margin. As shown below, that's an even wider miss than the $2 million gap to expectations in Q4:\nFigure 1. Beyond Meat earnings vs. expectations\nSource: Seeking Alpha\nAt a channel level, in Q1, Beyond Meat its U.S. retail sales grow by 28% y/y, but foodservice sales domestically saw a -26% y/y decline. This is concerning because throughout the March quarter, most areas and restaurants around the country had already lifted lockdown restrictions. We note that the kinds of chain locations that Beyond Meat is typically sold at, from Carls' Jr. to Dunkin' Donuts (DNKN), largely remained open during the pandemic anyway. So Beyond Meat can't really say that lockdowns and the pandemic were to blame for weaker foodservice sales: perhaps the pandemic had ended up ultimately changing consumers' menu preferences toward \"real\" meat, which is often also substantially cheaper than Beyond Meat.\nOn the retail side, we note that Beyond Meat's velocity is dropping (a measure of how quickly inventory is selling through on store shelves). Beyond Meat argued that during the pandemic, retail sell-through was constrained by limited supply - but now, what you can see in the chart below is that retail velocity has dramatically dropped over the past four weeks. The company noted that on a year over year basis, velocity is down -18% y/y in Q1.\nFigure 2. The past four weeks only saw Beyond Meat expanding its market share by 127bps, versus 319bps over the past year.\nMargin decay\nSlowing growth isn't the only troubling indicator for Beyond Meat. The company's gross margin profile, already thin to begin with, is at risk as well. We note that in Beyond Meat's most recent quarter, gross margin slipped to 30.2%, a huge 860bps reduction from 38.8% in the year-ago quarter.\nFigure 3. The company blamed the decay on rising storage/warehousing and transportation costs, which is similar to what many other consumer products companies are citing. Even more concerning, however, the company has cited rising fixed overhead costs at its production facilities. And perhaps riskiest of all is the fact that Beyond Meat notes that unfavorable product mix and higher trade discounts have also worked to push margins down.In spite of the fact that Beyond Meat leaned in more heavily on trade discounts to grow sales, the company still saw tepid revenue growth and thinning market share gains.\nWe note as well that Beyond Meat's adjusted EBITDA gains of $13.9 million from last Q1 turned into a -$10.8 million loss in the most recent Q1, indicating a 24-point decay in adjusted EBITDA margins. We have to wonder: is Beyond Meat structurally set up to be a profitable business?\nThe company likes to tout the fact that it spends ~8% of its revenue on R&D as a positive signal of the brand's innovation. But the other brands shown on the company's below slide are also innovators. Food brands like Kellogg and Kraft Heinz are constantly coming up with new cereal types and new flavors of their existing foods. Beyond Meat doesn't have a sole claim to innovation in the food space - yet it's spending considerably more than its peers on R&D. When we note the fact that Beyond Meat's gross margin is only ~30% to begin with, spending a further 8% of revenue on R&D is a steep ask.\nFigure 4. The downside to this approach, however, is that investors may miss out on the potential outperformance that could come from fast-growing companies over the long haul.</p>\n<p>The issue with buying&nbsp;growth stocks, however, is that it's extremely difficult to gauge how long their rapid top-line growth rates can persist. Further, these companies' stock prices could perform very poorly if the growth prospects already baked into the stock price don't pan out. In other words, there's arguably more risk when it comes to betting on growth stocks for the next decade than there is for stable and established companies with decades of success behind them.</p>\n<p>So if an&nbsp;investor&nbsp;wants to buy growth stocks with a high chance of exceeding expectations over the next 10 years, they better have some pretty good reasons to believe these companies can do exactly that.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/257045ef62f724806bce2b35390a5e4f\" tg-width=\"2000\" tg-height=\"1500\"><span>IMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.</span></p>\n<p>Here are two growth stocks that have a shot at not only living up to high expectations over the next 10 years but possibly even exceeding them:<b>Zoom Video Communications</b>(NASDAQ:ZM)&nbsp;and&nbsp;<b>Peloton Interactive</b>(NASDAQ:PTON).</p>\n<p><b>Zoom and Peloton were already thriving before the pandemic</b></p>\n<p>At first glance, investors may conclude that Zoom is nothing more than a pandemic stock. They may argue that the company's success was predicated almost entirely on the fact that much of the world was in lockdown in 2020 and going into 2021.</p>\n<p>It's true that Zoom benefited significantly from the rise of virtual work in 2020. After all, revenue for the company's fiscal 2021 (a fiscal year ending Jan. 31, 2021) skyrocketed 326% year over year. But investors should note that the trend of using video to collaborate virtually was already extremely strong before the pandemic; fiscal 2020 revenue rose 88% year over year. Growth at the time was particularly strong from large customers. Zoom's customers contributing more than $100,000 of trailing-12-month revenue increased 86% year over year in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2020.</p>\n<p>The same goes for Peloton. The company certainly benefited from the pandemic, but revenue during the quarter ending Dec. 31, 2019 was growing at a year-over-year rate of 77%, with connected fitness subscribers increasing 96% year over year.</p>\n<p><b>Continued momentum</b></p>\n<p>The underlying catalysts driving Zoom and Peloton are both still alive and well. They may argue that the company's success was predicated almost entirely on the fact that much of the world was in lockdown in 2020 and going into 2021.\nIt's true that Zoom benefited significantly from the rise of virtual work in 2020. After all, revenue for the company's fiscal 2021 (a fiscal year ending Jan. 31, 2021) skyrocketed 326% year over year. But investors should note that the trend of using video to collaborate virtually was already extremely strong before the pandemic; fiscal 2020 revenue rose 88% year over year. Coupang Inc.(NYSE:CPNG)from South Korea recently IPO'd in the US, and in this article, we will pitch the two against each other. Amazon looks like the more complete company with a wider moat to me, but Coupang is also an interesting play due to its position in an attractive, high-growth market.</p>\n<p><b>Coupang Stock Price</b></p>\n<p>Coupang Inc. has IPO'd in the US in March, raising more than&nbsp;$4 billion. The current analyst consensus price target for Amazon's shares is $4240, which suggests upside potential of around 15%, a little more than what analysts are expecting from Coupang right now.</p>\n<p><b>Coupang's Size Relative To Amazon?</b></p>\n<p>It's pretty obvious that Coupang is not bigger than Amazon. Amazon in 2005, when it was 11 years old, was a way smaller company than it is today, and it also was still unprofitable -- as Coupang is today. There is, however, no need to always buy the biggest companies, thus Amazon being larger than Coupang today does not necessarily equate to Amazon being a better investment. Other factors have to be considered for that as well.</p>\n<p><b>Is Coupang Better Than Amazon?</b></p>\n<p>When considering an investment, things that should be factored in are the growth outlook for a company, the stock's valuation, the company's risk profile and standing relative to competitors, and the overall quality.</p>\n<p>Looking at Coupang and Amazon, both companies are naturally poised to benefit from a long-term megatrend -- shopping shifting from brick-and-mortar to e-commerce. Note that this doesn't mean that brick-and-mortar retailers are all poised to die out, as we believe that higher-quality brick-and-mortar retailers (e.g. Home Depot(NYSE:HD)) and higher-quality brick-and-mortar real estate (e.g. Simon Property Group(NYSE:SPG)) will continue to do well. It is nevertheless relatively clear that, overall, e-commerce will continue to gain market share versus brick-and-mortar, with lower-quality traditional retailers taking the majority of the hit. Some goods are just very easily bought online, e.g. everyday clothes, books, etc. and online retailers should continue to make gains in these areas. On top of that, the overall consumer market continues to grow in both the US and internationally, which benefits online retailers as well.</p>\n<p>Amazon and Coupang also have the ability to boost their growth by expanding into additional markets, either geographically, or by building out new businesses. Amazon has very successfully done so and has become a major retailer not only in the US, but in many additional markets on top of that, and Amazon has also successfully built out a high-growth cloud computing business and is becoming a major player in online advertising.</p>\n<p>Coupang, as a much smaller and younger company, has not had the ability to expand its business as much as Amazon yet. Still, the Korean online retailer has managed to grow its business at a highly attractive pace, and one might even say that Coupang has outperformed Amazon in its home market South Korea. The company's success can be attributed to a smart and customer-focused approach that includes<i>Dawn Delivery</i>, a service that allows customers to order before midnight and receiving their order before 7 am the next day. Coupang also has reduced cardboard packaging significantly relative to how other online retailers operate, a move that resonates well with environmentally conscious customers. Through these measures and others, Coupang has been able to deliver rapid revenue growth in the recent past, which includes a massive 75% revenue increase during the most recent quarter. Amazon grew its revenue by 44% in the most recent quarter, although it should be noted that Amazon is growing from a much larger base. The law of large numbers means that Amazon, due to its already very large size, can't grow at the rapid rates Coupang is currently seeing any longer, and the fact that Amazon is, despite its size, still growing at an attractive 40%+ pace is testament to its strong business model.</p>\n<p>Coupang is the higher-growth company today, and one can expect that this will remain the case in the foreseeable future, with the smaller size being a key factor for that -- growing revenue from $20 billion to $40 billion is easier than growing revenue from $500 billion to $1 trillion. Coupang is, however, unlike Amazon, not profitable yet, which may result in share count dilution as Coupang could do a secondary offering to access additional capital. Coupang is also less diversified than Amazon, both geographically and when it comes to different industries. Amazon, with its marketing and cloud computing platforms, is more of a diversified company than Coupang, which is fully reliant on e-commerce.</p>\n<p>I don't think that there is a clear 'better buy' here, as both companies have their pros and cons. Coupang is growing faster and could double or triple its revenue more easily, but Amazon could be called the more dominant, wider-moat, more diversified pick that is also profitable and generates huge cash flows already.</p>\n<p>Looking at valuations, we can't value Coupang based on profits, as those are not existent yet. In Shopify's defense, one can argue that its more \"techy\" business deserves a higher sales multiple compared to the pure retailers. But even when one compares AMZN and CPNG to more similar companies such as Pinduoduo(NASDAQ:PDD)or MercadoLibre(NASDAQ:MELI), both AMZN and CPNG do seem inexpensive.</p>\n<p><b>Is Coupang Or Amazon Stock The Better Buy?</b></p>\n<p>As shown above, both companies do have their advantages, and which company you ultimately will prefer depends on what things you value the most when choosing an investment. Due to its larger scale, profitability, and strong diversification AMZN seems like the lower-risk choice to me, and its dominant position in its home market and the highly attractive cloud computing market position it well for the future, I believe. Coupang is not unattractive, either, however, and its higher revenue growth rate, coupled with an inexpensive sales multiple, could allow for considerable long-term upside.</p>\n<p>Neither company is risk-less, and due to the online retailers' exposure to consumer spending, both companies could be exposed to an economic downturn -- which I don't see as likely in the foreseeable future, however. On top of that, regulation seems like a possible risk, which may be more pronounced for Amazon due to its much larger size. On the other hand, Amazon is less dependent on a single geographic market, which results in some built-in diversification relative to the more focused Coupang.</p>\n<p>Depending on whether you want a diversified giant that is entrenched in many different markets, or whether you prefer a pure-play on consumers in South Korea, Amazon and/or Coupang could both be solid choices for your portfolio. Amazon looks like the more complete company with a wider moat to me, but Coupang is also an interesting play due to its position in an attractive, high-growth market.\nCoupang Stock Price\nCoupang Inc. has IPO'd in the US in March, raising more than $4 billion. Shares are currently trading for $40, which is below the prices of ~$50 that the stock traded at shortly following its IPO:\nData by YCharts\nShares have, however, risen considerably from the lows that the company hit in May, which could be the result of improving sentiment as the company reported very solid Q1 results that showed the company grew faster than expected. The current consensus price target is $44, which indicates that analysts are expecting an upside potential of around 10% over the next year -- solid, but not spectacular. Some speculated that the company would use the messages people add to their payments to figure out if the money was for a business transaction.</p>\n<p>Venmo will add a toggle to its user interface that will allow customers to indicate if the money they are sending is for a good or service, a company spokeswoman said. Those transactions will be eligible for the app’s purchase protection plan, which allows customers to dispute charges for purchases that don’t arrive or aren’t as expected, she said.</p>\n<p>The transaction fee will be automatically deducted from the amount sent.</p>\n<p>Joe Johnson, a 58-year-old fitness trainer who owns a training facility in Nashville, Tenn., uses Venmo to receive payments from clients and to pay his contract workers. He estimates that at least 80% of his customers pay through Venmo, and he receives multiple payments through the app each day. “I take Cash App, Zelle, credit cards, checks, cash—however people want to pay,” he said. “But Venmo rules right now.”</p>\n<p>Mr. Johnson said he has been a Venmo customer since its early days and never got around to creating a business profile, but as long as the fee doesn’t get too high he is fine with paying it. I figured it was going to come to an end at some point.’\n\n\n — Joe Johnson, Venmo user\n\nPayPal Chief Executive Dan Schulman said during an earnings call in February that Venmo’s user base had increased 32% in 2020 to nearly 70 million active accounts. About $51 billion was transferred via Venmo in the first quarter, a 63% increase from the previous year. PayPal expects Venmo to generate nearly $900 million in revenue in 2021.\nThursday’s announcement was met online with confusion from customers who didn’t understand how the app would determine which transactions should be charged the fee. Some speculated that the company would use the messages people add to their payments to figure out if the money was for a business transaction.\nVenmo will add a toggle to its user interface that will allow customers to indicate if the money they are sending is for a good or service, a company spokeswoman said. Those transactions will be eligible for the app’s purchase protection plan, which allows customers to dispute charges for purchases that don’t arrive or aren’t as expected, she said.\nThe transaction fee will be automatically deducted from the amount sent.\nJoe Johnson, a 58-year-old fitness trainer who owns a training facility in Nashville, Tenn., uses Venmo to receive payments from clients and to pay his contract workers. One stock that I think is at particular risk of crumbling further is Beyond Meat (BYND), one of the first purveyors of the faux-meat trend and one of the most recognizable brands in the space.</p>\n<p>Despite the growing appeal of plant-based meats, I continue to see huge fundamental flaws in this stock. The market seems to agree, as Beyond Meat shares have slid by roughly half relative to all-time highs around ~$200 notched last October.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9414d1f0d7b86d62d6febcd8fcfae596\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"417\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>In my view, Beyond Meat shares have even more downside left. I continue to cite that there's a \"story\" risk to Beyond Meat: plant-based meats are popular now, but are they a passing dietary fad? The list of diet fads is a long one, ranging from keto diets and paleo diets to complete-nutrient drinks like Huel. While Beyond Meat may find itself a core customer base, I view the category's growth to be limited especially with concerns that plant-based meats are unhealthy from a sodium angle.</p>\n<p>Yet there are shorter-term risks here, too. In particular, investors should be aware that Beyond Meat's growth and demand indicators have weakened in recent quarters. Profit margin slippage is another big concern, especially when the stock is still trading so expensively as a multiple of outer-year profits.</p>\n<p>The bottom line here: Beyond Meat is a spoiling stock, and I think there's little the company can do to get back on the right track.</p>\n<p><b>Slowing growth, decaying velocity</b></p>\n<p>The first thing investors should note is that Beyond Meat has missed Wall Street's expectations for three quarters in a row. It's a small wonder that the stock has landed in investors' \"penalty box\" - in a time when a reliable \"beat and raise\" cadence has become expected for growth stocks, Beyond Meat's earnings gaffes are a huge sore spot.</p>\n<p>In Beyond Meat's most recent quarter (Q1), the company saw relatively tepid 11% y/y growth to $108.2 million in revenue, missing Wall Street's expectations of $113.3 million (+17% y/y) by a huge six-point margin. As shown below, that's an even wider miss than the $2 million gap to expectations in Q4:</p>\n<p>Figure 1. Beyond Meat earnings vs. expectations</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/16650777bf67af7d8aa78be81ba77793\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"220\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Seeking Alpha</span></p>\n<p>At a channel level, in Q1, Beyond Meat its U.S. retail sales grow by 28% y/y, but foodservice sales domestically saw a -26% y/y decline. This is concerning because throughout the March quarter, most areas and restaurants around the country had already lifted lockdown restrictions. We note that the kinds of chain locations that Beyond Meat is typically sold at, from Carls' Jr. to Dunkin' Donuts (DNKN), largely remained open during the pandemic anyway. So Beyond Meat can't really say that lockdowns and the pandemic were to blame for weaker foodservice sales: perhaps the pandemic had ended up ultimately changing consumers' menu preferences toward \"real\" meat, which is often also substantially cheaper than Beyond Meat.</p>\n<p>On the retail side, we note that Beyond Meat's velocity is dropping (a measure of how quickly inventory is selling through on store shelves). Beyond Meat argued that during the pandemic, retail sell-through was constrained by limited supply - but now, what you can see in the chart below is that retail velocity has dramatically dropped over the past four weeks. The company noted that on a year over year basis, velocity is down -18% y/y in Q1.</p>\n<p>Figure 2. The past four weeks only saw Beyond Meat expanding its market share by 127bps, versus 319bps over the past year.</p>\n<p><b>Margin decay</b></p>\n<p>Slowing growth isn't the only troubling indicator for Beyond Meat. The company's gross margin profile, already thin to begin with, is at risk as well. We note that in Beyond Meat's most recent quarter, gross margin slipped to 30.2%, a huge 860bps reduction from 38.8% in the year-ago quarter.</p>\n<p>Figure 3. The company blamed the decay on rising storage/warehousing and transportation costs, which is similar to what many other consumer products companies are citing. Even more concerning, however, the company has cited rising fixed overhead costs at its production facilities. And perhaps riskiest of all is the fact that Beyond Meat notes that unfavorable product mix and higher trade discounts have also worked to push margins down.<b>In spite of the fact that Beyond Meat leaned in more heavily on trade discounts to grow sales, the company still saw tepid revenue growth and thinning market share gains.</b></p>\n<p>We note as well that Beyond Meat's adjusted EBITDA gains of $13.9 million from last Q1 turned into a -$10.8 million loss in the most recent Q1, indicating a 24-point decay in adjusted EBITDA margins. We have to wonder: is Beyond Meat structurally set up to be a profitable business?</p>\n<p>The company likes to tout the fact that it spends ~8% of its revenue on R&amp;D as a positive signal of the brand's innovation. But the other brands shown on the company's below slide are also innovators. Food brands like Kellogg and Kraft Heinz are constantly coming up with new cereal types and new flavors of their existing foods. Beyond Meat doesn't have a sole claim to innovation in the food space - yet it's spending considerably more than its peers on R&amp;D. When we note the fact that Beyond Meat's gross margin is only ~30% to begin with, spending a further 8% of revenue on R&amp;D is a steep ask.</p>\n<p>Figure 4. As shown in the chart below, the company is only expected to pass breakeven in 2023.</p>\n<p>Figure 5. One stock that I think is at particular risk of crumbling further is Beyond Meat (BYND), one of the first purveyors of the faux-meat trend and one of the most recognizable brands in the space.\nDespite the growing appeal of plant-based meats, I continue to see huge fundamental flaws in this stock. The market seems to agree, as Beyond Meat shares have slid by roughly half relative to all-time highs around ~$200 notched last October.\nData by YCharts\nIn my view, Beyond Meat shares have even more downside left. I continue to cite that there's a \"story\" risk to Beyond Meat: plant-based meats are popular now, but are they a passing dietary fad? The list of diet fads is a long one, ranging from keto diets and paleo diets to complete-nutrient drinks like Huel. While Beyond Meat may find itself a core customer base, I view the category's growth to be limited especially with concerns that plant-based meats are unhealthy from a sodium angle.\nYet there are shorter-term risks here, too. In particular, investors should be aware that Beyond Meat's growth and demand indicators have weakened in recent quarters. Profit margin slippage is another big concern, especially when the stock is still trading so expensively as a multiple of outer-year profits.\nThe bottom line here: Beyond Meat is a spoiling stock, and I think there's little the company can do to get back on the right track.\nSlowing growth, decaying velocity\nThe first thing investors should note is that Beyond Meat has missed Wall Street's expectations for three quarters in a row. It's a small wonder that the stock has landed in investors' \"penalty box\" - in a time when a reliable \"beat and raise\" cadence has become expected for growth stocks, Beyond Meat's earnings gaffes are a huge sore spot.\nIn Beyond Meat's most recent quarter (Q1), the company saw relatively tepid 11% y/y growth to $108.2 million in revenue, missing Wall Street's expectations of $113.3 million (+17% y/y) by a huge six-point margin. As shown below, that's an even wider miss than the $2 million gap to expectations in Q4:\nFigure 1. Beyond Meat earnings vs. expectations\nSource: Seeking Alpha\nAt a channel level, in Q1, Beyond Meat its U.S. retail sales grow by 28% y/y, but foodservice sales domestically saw a -26% y/y decline. This is concerning because throughout the March quarter, most areas and restaurants around the country had already lifted lockdown restrictions. We note that the kinds of chain locations that Beyond Meat is typically sold at, from Carls' Jr. to Dunkin' Donuts (DNKN), largely remained open during the pandemic anyway. So Beyond Meat can't really say that lockdowns and the pandemic were to blame for weaker foodservice sales: perhaps the pandemic had ended up ultimately changing consumers' menu preferences toward \"real\" meat, which is often also substantially cheaper than Beyond Meat.\nOn the retail side, we note that Beyond Meat's velocity is dropping (a measure of how quickly inventory is selling through on store shelves). Beyond Meat argued that during the pandemic, retail sell-through was constrained by limited supply - but now, what you can see in the chart below is that retail velocity has dramatically dropped over the past four weeks. The company noted that on a year over year basis, velocity is down -18% y/y in Q1.\nFigure 2. The past four weeks only saw Beyond Meat expanding its market share by 127bps, versus 319bps over the past year.\nMargin decay\nSlowing growth isn't the only troubling indicator for Beyond Meat. The company's gross margin profile, already thin to begin with, is at risk as well. We note that in Beyond Meat's most recent quarter, gross margin slipped to 30.2%, a huge 860bps reduction from 38.8% in the year-ago quarter.\nFigure 3. The company blamed the decay on rising storage/warehousing and transportation costs, which is similar to what many other consumer products companies are citing. Even more concerning, however, the company has cited rising fixed overhead costs at its production facilities. And perhaps riskiest of all is the fact that Beyond Meat notes that unfavorable product mix and higher trade discounts have also worked to push margins down.In spite of the fact that Beyond Meat leaned in more heavily on trade discounts to grow sales, the company still saw tepid revenue growth and thinning market share gains.\nWe note as well that Beyond Meat's adjusted EBITDA gains of $13.9 million from last Q1 turned into a -$10.8 million loss in the most recent Q1, indicating a 24-point decay in adjusted EBITDA margins. We have to wonder: is Beyond Meat structurally set up to be a profitable business?\nThe company likes to tout the fact that it spends ~8% of its revenue on R&D as a positive signal of the brand's innovation. But the other brands shown on the company's below slide are also innovators. Food brands like Kellogg and Kraft Heinz are constantly coming up with new cereal types and new flavors of their existing foods. Beyond Meat doesn't have a sole claim to innovation in the food space - yet it's spending considerably more than its peers on R&D. When we note the fact that Beyond Meat's gross margin is only ~30% to begin with, spending a further 8% of revenue on R&D is a steep ask.\nFigure 4. As shown in the chart below, the company is only expected to pass breakeven in 2023.\nFigure 5.
