BABA's shares currently represent a good buying opportunity in view of the stock's valuation discount relative to its peers, its long-termoutlook relating to future share repurchases, and the cloud business' growth potential. Why Did Alibaba's Stock Price Jump Up Recently?I previously raised my investment rating for BABA from a Hold to a Buy with my earlier Q2 FY 2023 (YE March 31) earnings preview article written on November 14, 2022. Alibaba's shares have risen by +63% since then, jumping from $73.16 to $119.44 as of January 24, 2023. Notably, BABA's share price went up by +33% in the past month. In my opinion, the significant jump in BABA's stock price in the past month is mainly attributable to the easing ofregulatory and political risks for Alibaba.A January 4, 2023 Seeking Alpha News article mentioned that \"Chinese regulators\" have given the go-ahead for Ant Group to \"raise $1.5B for its consumer finance unit.\" Two years ago, Ant Group, Alibaba's fintech business arm, aborted its public listing on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in November 2020, due to the company's failure to secure the necessary regulatory approvals. On January 10, 2023, Reuters reported that BABA entered into \"a cooperation agreement with the government of Hangzhou.\" Separately, the Cyberspace Administration of China took a stake in Alibaba's \"media and entertainment units\", UC Web and Youku, in the form of \"golden shares\" which offer voting power and the ability to appoint directors as per a January 13, 2023 Seeking Alpha News article. As such, it is reasonable to view the recent developments for Alibaba and Ant Group as a sign that the crackdown on the Chinese technology sector has been halted by policy makers and regulatory agencies in China. It is understandable that investors have applied a substantial regulatory risk discount to BABA's shares in the past. But Alibaba's stock has rebounded strongly in recent times thanks to a narrowing of this regulatory risk discount. Is It Fairly Valued Now?I deem Alibaba's shares to be undervalued, rather than fairly valued or overvalued, now.BABA is still trading at a big discount to its Chinese internet peers, even though its shares have done pretty well in the last few months. The market currently values Alibaba at a consensus forward next twelve months' normalized P/E of 13.8 times as per S&P Capital IQ data. As a comparison, Tencent Holdings Limited (OTCPK:TCEHY) (OTCPK:TCTZF) [700:HK], Pinduoduo (PDD), and JD.com (JD) trade at forward P/E ratios of 24.7 times, 24.0 times, and 21.9 times, respectively. Also, Alibaba used to command a forward P/E multiple in the 20-30 times valuation range (source:S&P Capital IQ) for most of 2020, before China began targeting the technology sector and related companies in late-2020. With the regulatory environment for internet companies in China turning more favorable, it is likely that BABA's forward P/E ratio can expand to 20 times or higher in time to come.In the subsequent two sections of the article, I note that the likely absence of negative surprises when BABA announces quarterly earnings and the stock's good long-term outlook should support a positive re-rating of Alibaba's share price and valuations going forward.BABA Stock Key MetricsAlibaba is expected to disclose its financial performance for the third quarter of fiscal 2023 (fourth quarter of calendar year 2022) on February 6, 2023. Expectations for BABA's Q3 FY 2023 results are low, and the market is already looking forward to Alibaba's business recovery in fiscal 2024 (April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024).The key metrics to pay attention to are the sell-side analysts' consensus Q3 FY 2023 and full-year FY 2024 revenue and bottom line estimates for BABA sourced from S&P Capital IQ.The sell-side sees Alibaba's YoY top line expansion in local currency, or RMB terms, slowing from +9.7% for Q3 FY 2022 and +3.2% for Q2 FY 2023 to +1.9% in Q3 FY 2023. The analysts also predict BABA's normalized earnings per share or EPS to decrease by -2.1% from RMB16.87 in Q3 FY 2022 to RMB16.51 for Q3 FY 2023. This compares unfavorably with Alibaba's +15.4% bottom line growth (in RMB terms) in Q2 FY 2023. Moreover, 16 and 11 analysts (out of a total of 45 analysts covering the stock) have revised their Q3 FY 2023 top line and normalized EPS projections downward in the last three months.BABA's business operations were very likely to have been adversely affected by the COVID-zero policy in Mainland China for the third quarter of fiscal 2023. But this is already reflected in the market's consensus financial figures for the stock. Therefore, I expect Alibaba to report in-line Q3 revenue and earnings next month.More importantly, investors should be focused on the improvement in Alibaba's financial performance for the new fiscal year as BABA benefits from China's reopening. As per the analysts' consensus financial numbers, Alibaba's top line and normalized EPS are projected to increase by +11.9% and +16.2% to RMB982 billion and RMB60.90, respectively. The expected improvement in BABA's financial results for the new fiscal year are supported by a recovery in China's consumption, positive operating leverage, and the successful implementation of cost optimization measures. In a nutshell, my view is that BABA's actual Q3 FY 2023 financial results and its forward-looking management commentary, to be revealed early next month, should be in line with the market's expectations. What Is The Long-Term Stock Outlook?I see Alibaba's stock continuing to do well in the long run, based on my evaluation of its cloud business' prospects and its capital allocation approach. At its Q3 FY 2022 earnings briefing in February last year, BABA's CEO estimated that \"China's cloud market will be a RMB 1 trillion ($150 billion) opportunity by 2025\" because \"industrial digitalization (in China) today is still in a very early stage.\"The bullish comments made by the company's CEO regarding the long term growth potential of the Chinese cloud industry are supported by various research firms' forecasts and predictions.McKinsey's research indicates that China's public cloud segment could expand by an impressive CAGR of +30% for the 2021-2025 period. Separately, Baillie Gifford's research team expects Alibaba to have close to a 50% profit share of the Chinese cloud market in 2026. In other words, digital transformation for companies in China should be a major growth driver for the Chinese cloud sector in the years ahead, while BABA remains as a key beneficiary as it is expected to still have a lion's share of the profits generated by this market.Separately, Alibaba is generating a significant amount of free cash flow, and the company intends to allocate a meaningful proportion of its free cash flow to share repurchases. Sustained share buybacks should support a re-rating of BABA's valuations over time, as the market assigns a valuation premium to Alibaba for its shareholder-friendly capital allocation approach.BABAincreased the size of its share repurchase program from $25 billion to $40 billion in mid-November 2022 when it announced Q2 FY 2023 results. As of November last year, Alibaba still had around $22 billion remaining from its current buyback authorization which lasts until end-March 2025. In comparison, the sell-side analysts estimate that BABA can generate about $19 billion (in USD terms) of free cash flow for FY 2024.Assuming that Alibaba completes its share repurchase program in full by March 2025, the company would have spent roughly half of its free cash flow on buybacks in the next two years which is pretty significant. Another way to assess BABA's share repurchases is to calculate the potential shareholder return yield. If the company allocates $11 billion to buybacks every year (half of what it is left of the buyback authorization for the next two years), this works out to be a very attractive shareholder return yield of 3.5% based on Alibaba's current market capitalization. Is BABA Stock A Buy, Sell, or Hold?I continue to rate BABA's stock as a Buy. Alibaba's shares are undervalued, and I see its stock price rising on the cloud business' long term growth and the company's sustained share repurchases. This article is written by The Value Pendulum for reference only. This was the lowest print since October 2021 echoing the trend in the \"core\" indicator at 5.7%, which excludes the impact of food and energy, also moving in the right direction.More importantly, the monthly headline rate declined by -0.1%, surprising to the downside, compared to the flat estimate. If we consider the average monthly inflation over the last six months at just 0.15%, the pace implies an annualized forward rate for the CPI at just 2%.source: BLSThe setup has significant implications for the next steps in Fed policy. An FOMC meeting is coming up in less than three weeks, with some new flexibility for Powell and company to start making adjustments to its uber-hawkish messaging that was the staple for much of 2022 because the data now justifies it.We've been calling it through several notes published here in recent months and on the right side of this trade considering the impressive rally already in stocks. The S&P 500 (NYSEARCA:SPY) is up nearly 15% from its October low and even compared to levels in May eight months ago. From here, we see several reasons to stay bullish and expect more upside.Data by YChartsCollapsing Inflationary PressuresGoing through the CPI data, a couple of points are worth diving into. The \"food\" price category posted a monthly increase of just +0.3%, the smallest increase since January 2021, nearly two years ago. The sense is that the combination of normalizing demand from skewed pandemic dynamics, easing supply chain pressures, and lower commodity input prices are starting to stabilize this high-profile category. That's also the setup in core items like \"new vehicles\", and \"used cards\" where prices are dropping as inventory improves. The one stubborn component is \"shelter\" which still has room to fall, in our view, into the headlines of a slower housing market with the more direct impact of higher rates.Lower energy prices are also helping based on broader global macro trends. On this point, most people will be aware of the sharp correction in oil and gas prices reflected in the \"energy commodities\" category declining by -4.5% on the month and up just 0.4% higher year-over-year. Beyond the daily volatility in crude oil (USO), what's encouraging is the turn lower in \"fuel oil\" prices, down -17% m/m, which has been one of the hottest items over the past year. This implies the spread to oil is narrowing, again based on those same normalizing global supply chains.source: BLSThe point here is to say that there are plenty of indications inflation as we saw it in 2022 is effectively over. Entering 2023 with the January and February data, the CPI will start hitting tough comps from the first half of 2022. A headline inflation rate under 3% by the end of this year could be in the cards as a very bullish turn of events.source: tradingeconomicsBullish On StocksAs it relates to the Fed, it's not \"mission accomplished\" just yet, but it's clear to us that the data has progressed better than expected, and it may not be necessary for many more rate hikes. One of our talking points has been that the Fed played it extra cautiously, in the face of damaged credibility following its missteps in 2021. In other words, they may have underpromised last year through the fire and brimstone messaging to make room to eventually over-deliver. That's the trajectory we believe is taking place.Whether the next Fed Meeting set for February 1st features a 50 basis point hike, or now the more likely a 25 basis point increase; we're one step closer to reaching that terminal rate. Into the second half of the year, a scenario where it's evident forward inflation expectations are firmly anchored in the low single digits can place a decision for a possible rate cut on the table. This of course would work to jumpstart investment sentiment with a boost to economic activity as a strong tailwind for risk assets. We're already seeing that with the action in Treasuries as yields pull back with a rally in bonds in recent months. This is the market's inference for where Fed policy is headed going forward.source: cnbcThe biggest change today is that the latest data sort of forces a reckoning by investors in the large segment of the market that came into 2023 with a baseline of \"higher for longer\" in terms of interest rates, or even those that thought that inflation was poised to re-accelerate higher. This also ties into the otherwise resilient labor market data which has posted continued job gains even as wage pressures slow.Any calls for surging unemployment and a deeper economic collapse are moving more toward the side of dangerously contrarian. At the end of the day, the Fed may achieve its goal of stabilizing consumer prices without causing a deep recession which is a nugget many believed to be impossible. What we're counting on is a clearer path for a \"soft landing\" in the U.S. economy where despite the volatile conditions last year, the economy emerges relatively unscathed, where the higher plateau for interest rates is manageable. The next stage in the cycle could be marked by good-news is good-news with several soft and hard indicators suggesting a broader macro rebound. A lot of that will be tied directly to the easing inflation.Corporate margins and earnings benefit from lower cost pressures.Consumer sentiment gets a lift.Manufacturing and Services PMI bounce from near record lows.Stabilizing interest rates provide a floor to the housing market.China reopening leads to a rebound in trade activity.Further improvements to supply chains.Maybe the biggest development in recent months has been the weakening of the U.S. Dollar corresponding to the pullback in bond yields, along with the specific trends towards the Euro as the large component of the Dollar Index. The message we have is that while higher interest rates represent a form of monetary tightening, the weaker Dollar and now lower inflation expectation help to balance those impacts. A resurgence of global growth including momentum in emerging markets also ends up being positive for the macro backdrop.source: finvizQ4 Earnings Season PreviewThe next major market catalyst will be the upcoming Q4 earnings season which kicks off with the big banks reporting Friday, January 13th while most mega-cap leaders come later this month. The data we're looking at suggests earnings estimates have trended lower in recent months which is in the context of what until a few weeks ago was extreme pessimism and now a low base of expectations. According to FactSet, the S&P 500 EPS is on track to post an annual decline of -4.1%. This is against the historically strong Q4 2021, with weakness, particularly from consumer discretionary names and also tech.source: FactSetAt the same time, consider that the sectors facing the biggest earnings headwinds have also lagged with a case to be made that their poor performance suggests that some of the earnings weakness has already been priced in.Major companies like Amazon.com (AMZN) previously cited inflation and logistics costs as one of its biggest challenges last year, which is encouraging considering those factors are reversing now. We've called AMZN a big winner from the November CPI report and the latest December data further supports that view.Data by YChartsThere is also a thought that efforts toward cost-cutting and driving financial efficiencies can play a bigger role going forward. That's the case with Meta Platforms, Inc. (META), among the worst performers in the S&P 500 but notably gaining momentum with a rally. With banks the big question is, how have the higher interest rates impacted core lending beyond the positive income factor? One trend that will be watched is how large of loan-loss provisions the group including JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) chooses to take as a sign of financial concerns. On that point, we haven't seen the widescale corporate defaults defined in other recessions which is a good sign for earnings momentum from financials.Overall, it will be important for companies to confirm conditions have remained at least stable relative to Q3 when 40% of S&P 500 companies were able to beat EPS expectations. A cautiously optimistic outlook from management teams focusing on improving supply chains along with easing cost pressures as a positive for margins can go a long way for the market to climb the wall of earnings worry.SPY Price ForecastThe way we see it playing out is that beyond Q4 earnings reports from major companies, the February FOMC meeting incorporating the latest CPI data could be a game changer through a new narrative in the market consensus. An environment where bears begin to slowly abandon calls for the market to make a new cycle low translates directly into a short squeeze at the margin as a tailwind for stocks to run.A bullish positioning into this positive market momentum makes sense. We've previously set a year-end price target for the S&P at 4,777 or nearly $480 in SPY and reaffirm that call today. SPY is approaching the $400 or $4,000 at the S&P 500 index level which is a key psychological level. Beaten-down names, particularly in tech and growth, are well-positioned to lead higher. In terms of risks, we always have to bring up the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict which remains volatile. All it takes is a headline of some escalation into NATO territory where all bets are off. We'll consider this more of a tail-risk event but needs to be watched closely. Energy prices are also critical going forward. Even with some room for oil to rebound from here, as the sharply higher price of gasoline and fuel could drive a new wave of inflation.Seeking AlphaThis article is written by BOOX Research for reference only. month, the Federal Reserve implemented its fifth straight interest rate hike this year, and its third consecutive hike at 75 basis points, bringing its key funds rate up to the 3% to 3.25% range. The move showed that the central bank is deadly serious about taking on the stubbornly high inflation that has been plaguing the economy since the middle of 2021.The Fed’s turn toward an aggressive anti-inflationary policy may not be hard enough, however, as the September data, released this morning, showed the headline consumer price index (CPI) at an annualized rate of 8.2%, slightly lower than August’s 8.3%, but slightly higher than the 8.1% which had been forecast. There’s no good news here, and we should expect the Fed to take further aggressive rate hiking action at the next FOMC meeting on November 1 and 2.After the data release, the 2-year Treasury bond yield jumped by 16 basis points and hit 4.45%, and the 10-year note once again moved above 4%. These moves portend a shift by investors from stocks toward bonds, to lock in higher yields. For investors still intent on sticking with stocks, the logical move is find a defensive play that will provide some protection against inflation. Dividend stocks, especially the high-yield payers, are the ‘standard’ move in the defensive playbook, and we’ve used the TipRanks data to look up two that offer yields high enough to give some insulation against inflation. And even better, they both have a ‘Strong Buy’ consensus rating from the wider analyst community. Let’s take a closer look.Alpine Income Property Trust (PINE)The first high-yield div payer we’ll look at is Alpine Income Property Trust, a commercial net lease REIT with a focus on retail properties. Alpine’s portfolio is composed of open-air strip malls and stand-alone retail locations, spread across 35 states. The company is headquartered in Florida, where it has 4 properties; the state with the largest number of Alpine properties is Texas, with 25, while Ohio and New York tie for second place, each with 12 properties.Alpine has a total of 143 properties in its portfolio, a combined 3.3 million square feet of leasable space. The company boasts, justifiably, that it has a 100% occupancy rate. Revenues and earnings have been strong over the past two years, with consistent sequential gains at the top line.Alpine saw revenues of $11.3 million in 2Q22, the last quarter reported. Earnings spiked in that quarter, to $14.3 million, after coming in at just $304K one year earlier. Alpine had a diluted EPS of $1.05 in 2Q22. Of particular interest to dividend investors, Alpine reported an adjusted funds from operations (AFFO) of $0.47 for 2Q, a 20% increase year-over-year, and more than enough to fully cover the regular stock dividend. That dividend deserved a closer look. The most recent declaration, made in August, was for 27.5 cents per common share, a modest bump of 1.9% from the previous quarter – but the sixth dividend increase in the past three years. Alpine’s current common share dividend annualizes to $1.10 and gives a yield of 7%, more than triple the average dividend yield in the broader markets, and high enough to be useful as insulation against current inflation. In the eyes of Raymond James analyst RJ Milligan, who holds a 5-star ranking from TipRanks, all of this adds up to a company in a very solid position.“Investors continue to build positions in more defensive sectors (including net-lease) given concerns about a coming recession, which has helped drive the net lease sector’s YTD outperformance despite spiking rates and high inflation. We expect PINE will continue to benefit from this rotation given its high quality portfolio, discounted valuation, and well-covered dividend,” Milligan opined.Following from this upbeat stance, Milligan rates PINE shares an Outperform (i.e. Buy), and his price target of $23 implies a one-year upside potential of 44%.While this commercial REIT has only picked up 5 recent analyst reviews, those were all positive, testifying to PINE’s underlying strength and attractive qualities – and giving the stock a unanimous Strong Buy consensus rating. The shares are selling for $15.87 and their average price target of $21.25 indicates a potential gain of 33% in the next 12 months.CTO Realty Growth (CTO)Let’s stick with REITs, a sector known for its dividend champs. CTO Realty Growth is another commercial REIT with income-generating shopping mall and retail investments in 9 states. CTO has 6 properties in its home state of Florida, and 3 each in Georgia and Texas. The bulk of CTO’s assets are in the coastal Southeast or the Southwest, but the company does have a 15% ownership interest in Alpine, the stock discussed above. In recent weeks, CTO has announced two important developments that have enhanced the company’s liquidity. First was the September 21 notice that the firm had expanded its credit facility to $565 million, and that was followed on September 26 by the announcement that the company had sold off three properties in Jacksonville, Florida for a total of $34.9 million.Earlier in the summer, CTO reported its results for 2Q22, with fund from operations (FFO) coming in at $1.41 per share for the quarter, up 60% year-over-year, and adjusted FFO growing 38% to reach $1.48 per common share. These results were more than enough to support the dividend, which was declared for Q3 on August 22 and paid out on September 30. The Q3 dividend was raised by a modest 1.8% and paid out at 38 cents per common share. The dividend’s annualized rate of $1.52 gives a yield of 8.6%, which is higher than current inflation numbers and ensures a real rate of return for investors.AnalystRobert Stevenson, watching this stock for investment firm Janney Montgomery, is unabashedly bullish on CTO. He says of the company, “Our continued positive view on the stock is based on the company’s assets, high dividend yield, and ability to continue to grow earnings and dividends for shareholders… CTO is one of our favorite yield names within our REIT coverage universe.”Factoring in a discounted valuation and attractive growth potential, Stevenson rates CTO a Buy, along with a price target of $25. If his price target is achieved, investors could realize a potential total return of ~44%There are 4 recent analyst reviews on file for CTO and they are unanimously positive, to give the stock its Strong Buy analyst consensus rating. The shares are priced at $17.54 and their $25 average target matches Stevenson’s 42% upside forecast.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"PINE":0.9,"CTO":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":710,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":140773742,"gmtCreate":1625678372686,"gmtModify":1703746336308,"author":{"id":"3585489224255758","authorId":"3585489224255758","name":"GinOng","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dbc4f4af938fe9cbc71173da2486f50b","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3585489224255758","idStr":"3585489224255758"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Buy Apple ID you have not done so!
