The S&P 1500 Airline and Hotel/Restaurant/Leisure indexes gained up 3.7% and 1.6%, respectively.
\n
\"We have energy, retail, travel, leisure, financials, and small caps all doing well today,\" Detrick said. \"And that’s a sign that the reopening is alive and well.\"
\n
Recent economic indicators suggest the recovery from the most abrupt recession in U.S. history is headed in the right direction, but not to the extent that is likely to prompt the Fed to tighten its dovish monetary policy.
\n
Fed Chair Jerome Powell is due to meet with other world bank leaders when the Jackson Hole Symposium convenes later this week, and his remarks will be closely parsed for any clues regarding the Fed's tapering of asset purchases and hiking key interest rates.
\n
The event will take place virtually and not in person due to the spread of COVID-19 in the county, which has reduced expectations that any major announcement will be made at the event.
\n
\"The fact that the Fed is having a virtual (Jackson Hole) meeting tells you that they might be thinking maybe they need to keep supporting the economy,\" said Detrick.
\n
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 30.55 points, or 0.09%, to 35,366.26, the S&P 500 gained 6.7 points, or 0.15%, to 4,486.23 and the Nasdaq Composite added 77.15 points, or 0.52%, to 15,019.80.
\n
Energy was the top gainer among the 11 major sectors in the S&P 500, boosted by the continued rally in crude prices.
\n
Best Buy Co Inc jumped 8.3% after the electronics retailer beat analyst earnings expectations and raised its full year sales forecast.
\n
U.S.-listed shares of China-based e-commerce platform Pinduoduo Inc surged 22.2% after reporting its first ever quarterly profit.
\n
JD.com gained 14.4% in the wake of the Chinese online retailer's remarks on Monday that it does not expect any business impact from a wave of regulations hitting the industry at home.
\n
Other shares of Chinese companies listed on U.S. exchanges were bouncing back as well, with the Invesco Golden Dragon ETF jumping 8.0%.
\n
Cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks Inc advanced18.6% as brokerages raised their price targets following its full-year forecast beat.
\n
Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 2.17-to-1 ratio; coronavirus vaccine from Johnson & Johnson is much less effective against the Delta variant than it is against the original version of COVID-19, according to a new study posted online Tuesday.
\n
The study, which examined blood samples in a laboratory setting and has not yet been peer-reviewed, suggests that anyone who received the J&J $(JNJ)$ vaccine may need to receive a second shot as the variant continues to spread across the US.
\n
\"The message that we wanted to give was not that people shouldn't get the J&J vaccine, but we hope that in the future, it will be boosted with either another dose of J&J or a boost with Pfizer or Moderna,\" study leader Nathaniel Landau, a virologist at NYU's Grossman School of Medicine, told The New York Times .
\n
Earlier this month, New Jersey-based Johnson & Johnson published preliminary data indicating its vaccine was effective against the Delta variant, first located in India, at least eight months after inoculation.
\n
However, in May, the British government released a study vaccine, which is similar in structure to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, was just 33 percent effective against \"symptomatic disease\" caused by the Delta variant, while two doses were 60 percent effective against symptomatic disease.
\n
J&J spokesperson Seema Kumar told the Times that the data from the latest study \"do not speak to the full nature of immune protection.\"
\n
Last month, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention $(CDC)$ Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky told NBC's \"Today\" show that \"we have every reason to believe ... that the J&J will perform well against the Delta variant, as it has so far against other variants circulating in the United States.\"
\n
Walensky told lawmakers earlier Tuesday that the Delta variant currently accounts for 83 percent of all COVID-19 cases in the US. During the same hearing, White House chief medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci said researchers were still assessing whether booster shots would be needed to provide additional protection.
\n
\"We don't want people to believe that when you're talking about boosters, that means the vaccines aren't effective,\" Fauci said. \"They are highly effective, we are talking about the durability of that.\"
\n
Initial studies indicate that mRNA vaccines manufactured by Moderna $(MRNA)$ and Pfizer $(PFE)$ BioNTech $(BNTX)$ are effective against the Delta variant and could provide protection for years, provided the virus doesn't mutate far beyond its initial form.
\n
The Delta variant has been blamed for an increase in cases, hospitalizations and deaths in recent weeks, though the numbers in all categories are still well below the peak of last winter's surge and the overwhelming majority of hospitalizations and deaths are occurring among unvaccinated people.
\n
Despite that, health officials in Los Angeles and Las Vegas have reimposed mask mandates in indoor spaces, regardless of individuals' vaccination status.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html;
Indexes: Dow -0.31%, S&P 500 -0.35%, Nasdaq -0.38%
\n
\n
(Updates following end of session)
\n
July 13 (Reuters) - The S&P 500 and Nasdaq ended lower on Tuesday after hitting record highs earlier in the session, with investors digesting a jump in consumer prices in June and earnings from JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs that kicked off the quarterly reporting season.
\n
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq reached fresh record highs but quickly fell into negative territory after an auction of 30-year Treasuries showed less demand than some investors expected and pushed yields higher.
\n
Data indicated U.S. consumer prices rose by the most in 13 years last month, while so-called core consumer prices surged 4.5% year over year, the largest rise since November 1991.
\n
Economists viewed the price surge, driven by travel-rated services and used automobiles, as mostly temporary, aligning with Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's long-standing views.
\n
\"Any time you get an uptick in interest rates the stock market is going to get nervous, especially on a day like today,\" said Joe Saluzzi, co-manager of trading at Themis Trading in Chatham, New Jersey.
\n
The S&P 500 growth index dipped 0.05%, while the value index fell 0.70%.
\n
\"With growth outperforming value, the takeaway is clearly that inflation from a market perspective is not a real threat in the long term,\" said Keith Buchanan, a portfolio manager at GLOBALT Investments in Atlanta, Georgia.
\n
Ten of the 11 major S&P 500 sector indexes ended lower, with real estate , consumer discretionary and financials each down more than 1%.
\n
JPMorgan Chase & Co stock fell 1.5% after the company reported blockbuster quarterly profit growth but warned that the sunny outlook would not make for blockbuster revenues in the short term due to low interest rates.
\n
Goldman Sachs Group Inc dipped 1.2% after its quarterly earnings exceeded forecasts.
\n
Citigroup , Wells Fargo & Co and Bank of America were due to report their quarterly results early on Wednesday.
\n
PepsiCo Inc gained 2.3% after raising its full-year earnings forecast, betting on accelerating demand as COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease.
\n
June-quarter earnings per share for S&P 500 companies are expected to rise 66%, according to Refinitiv data, with investors questioning how long Wall Street's rally would last after a 16% rise in the benchmark index so far this year.
\n
All eyes now turn to Fed Chair Jerome Powell's congressional testimony on Wednesday and Thursday for his comments about rising price pressures and monetary support going forward.
\n
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.31% to end at 34,888.79 points, while the S&P 500 lost 0.35% to 4,369.21.
\n
The Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.38% to 14,677.65.
\n
Conagra Brands Inc dropped 5.4% after the packaged foods company warned that higher raw material and ingredient costs would take a bigger bite out of its profit this year than previously estimated.
\n
Boeing Co fell 4.2% after the Federal Aviation Administration said late on Monday some undelivered 787 Dreamliners have a new manufacturing quality issue.
\n
Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a 2.85-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 3.06-to-1 ratio favored decliners.
\n
The S&P 500 posted 39 new 52-week highs and no new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 61 new highs and 73 new lows.
\n
Volume on U.S. exchanges was 9.5 billion shares, compared with the 10.5 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.
\n
(Additional reporting by Devik Jain and Shreyashi Sanyal in Bengaluru; Editing by Cynthia coronavirus vaccine from Johnson & Johnson is much less effective against the Delta variant than it is against the original version of COVID-19, according to a new study posted online Tuesday.
Rochelle Walensky told NBC's \"Today\" show that \"we have every reason to believe ... that the J&J will perform highs earlier in the session, with investors digesting a jump in consumer prices in June and earnings from JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs that kicked off the quarterly reporting season.
\n
\"Any time you get an uptick in interest rates the stock market is going to get nervous, especially on a day like today,\" said Joe Saluzzi, co-manager of trading at Themis Trading in perspective is not a real threat in the long term,\" said Keith Buchanan, a portfolio manager at GLOBALT Investments in Atlanta, Georgia.
\n
Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a 2.85-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 3.06-to-1 ratio favored
