However, this is actually a time to exercise caution.For one thing, China’s on-and-off zero-Covid policies could throw a wrench into the works. Besides, Nio’s financials are less than ideal, especially when it comes to the company’s profits (or lack thereof).As a China-based electric vehicle (EV) company, Nio has to contend with multiple challenges. There’s the prospect of having to compete in a fierce EV market. Plus, Nio must deal with a government that’s not always business-friendly.Regardless of where you’re located, if you’re invested in Nio, the company’s problems will become your problems. There may be a time to take a stake in Nio at some point in the future, but for the time being, a watch-and-wait strategy is entirely appropriate.NIONio$12.09What’s Happening with NIO Stock?NIO stock started 2022 at $33, but recently declined to just $12 and change. Bear in mind, just because a stock has a lower price, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good value.It’s difficult to assign a proper value to a stock when there’s an unpredictable government. On Nov. 11, a number of U.S.-listed Chinese companies’ shares rallied because Beijing seemed to be easing some of China’s Covid-19 restrictions. Yet, the hope of a near-term full reopening in China wouldn’t last long.Fast-forward to Nov. 22, and China is reporting 28,127 new domestically transmitted Covid-19 cases. This number was close to the nation’s daily peak from April.The next thing you know, there are reports of cultural and entertainment venues closures and restricted use of some shopping malls and restaurants. This, clearly, is a challenging macro-level environment for Nio to work in.Nio’s Financial Are ProblematicMeanwhile, some folks probably celebrated Nio’s most recently reported quarterly financial results, but perhaps they shouldn’t. There’s good news in the data but also major issues.It’s true that Nio increased its revenue 32.6% year over year during the third quarter of 2022. However, Nio also saw its gross margin shrink from 20.3% to 13.3% during that time.Furthermore, Nio’s gross profit contracted 12.9% year over year, but that’s not even the worst part. Distressingly, Nio’s net earnings loss ballooned 392.1% year over year to the equivalent of $577.9 million in Q3 2022.Now, we can start to see why NIO stock hasn’t regained its footing this year. Currently, there are too many holes in the bull thesis for investors to put their faith in Nio.What You Can Do NowThis isn’t to suggest that Nio is a toxic business that’s about to go bankrupt. There may be an appropriate time to consider NIO stock in the future.However, once again, let’s not confuse a low share price with a compelling value. For this reason, I am neutral on the stock.McDonald’s Corporation doesn’t really need an introduction. It’s relatively safe to assume that most people have had a burger in one of the McDonald’s restaurants at some point in their lifetimes.The company has active operations in 119 countries, with around 37,552 of its 40,344 restaurants being franchised, representing roughly 93% of the company’s total locations.This is where the magic of McDonald’s business model lies. The company produces the majority of its revenues from the real estate and royalties its franchisees pay. Thus, McDonald’s is not really concerned about the overall hassle required to actually run its franchised locations. Consequently, McDonald’s cash flows are mostly frictionless and high margin.These qualities, combined with McDonald’s excellent track record of capital returns and shareholder value creation, have resulted in its stock becoming a prime destination for investors during times of increased uncertainty. This is evident in the stock’s performance over the past year.Specifically, McDonald’s stock has gained about 8%, while the S&P 500 (SPX) has declined 11% during this period.McDonald’s Continues to Grow, Excluding One-Off EventsMcDonald’s Q1-2022 results came in rather strong, with the company recording revenues of $5.67 billion, 10.6% higher year-over-year. Revenue growth was driven by excellent performance in both company-operated restaurants and franchised restaurants. Specifically, revenues grew 6.5% at company-owned locations and 13.4% at franchised locations.Further, global comparable sales grew 11.8% due to comparable sales growth across all divisions. International comparable sales strongly contributed to this, as they increased 20.4% for the quarter.International comparable sales growth mirrored both strong operating performance and the gradual reduction of COVID-related government constraints in most overseas markets.Net income equaled $1.1 billion or $1.48 per share against $1.54 billion or $2.08 per share in the prior-year period. The prolonged valuation expansion was due to declining interest rates over the past decade.With investors flocking to the stock in the current environment, the premium has lasted. Oil averaged roughly $95 a barrel from 2011 to 2013—the same time Prius sales increased.</p>\n<p>That’s one example, but the oil price/EV sale trade has broken down in recent years. Don’t forget, oil prices dropped in 2020 while Tesla sales hit a record of about 500,00 units.</p>\n<p>Morgan Stanley analyst&nbsp;Adam Jonas&nbsp;thinks a linkage between oil and EVs may reappear. He pointed out in a Wednesday report that higher oil prices make EVs relatively more attractive. That much is obvious, but he also thinks prices won’t lead governments to relax drilling restrictions or invest in refining capacity to drive down oil prices. Instead, Jonas believes, higher oil prices will accelerate government support for EVs. That’s important, but the biggest boost to the EV sector will come when EVs cost the same as gasoline-powered cars—something Jonas says could happen as soon as “mid-decade.”</p>\n<p>Jonas’ preferred stocks to play the EV trend are&nbsp;General Motors (GM),Aptiv(APTV) and Tesla, all of which he rates Buy. However, this is actually a time to exercise caution.For one thing, China’s on-and-off zero-Covid policies could throw a wrench into the works. Besides, Nio’s financials are less than ideal, especially when it comes to the company’s profits (or lack thereof).As a China-based electric vehicle (EV) company, Nio has to contend with multiple challenges. There’s the prospect of having to compete in a fierce EV market. Plus, Nio must deal with a government that’s not always business-friendly.Regardless of where you’re located, if you’re invested in Nio, the company’s problems will become your problems. There may be a time to take a stake in Nio at some point in the future, but for the time being, a watch-and-wait strategy is entirely appropriate.NIONio$12.09What’s Happening with NIO Stock?NIO stock started 2022 at $33, but recently declined to just $12 and change. Bear in mind, just because a stock has a lower price, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good value.It’s difficult to assign a proper value to a stock when there’s an unpredictable government. On Nov. 11, a number of U.S.-listed Chinese companies’ shares rallied because Beijing seemed to be easing some of China’s Covid-19 restrictions. Yet, the hope of a near-term full reopening in China wouldn’t last long.Fast-forward to Nov. 22, and China is reporting 28,127 new domestically transmitted Covid-19 cases. This number was close to the nation’s daily peak from April.The next thing you know, there are reports of cultural and entertainment venues closures and restricted use of some shopping malls and restaurants. This, clearly, is a challenging macro-level environment for Nio to work in.Nio’s Financial Are ProblematicMeanwhile, some folks probably celebrated Nio’s most recently reported quarterly financial results, but perhaps they shouldn’t. There’s good news in the data but also major issues.It’s true that Nio increased its revenue 32.6% year over year during the third quarter of 2022. However, Nio also saw its gross margin shrink from 20.3% to 13.3% during that time.Furthermore, Nio’s gross profit contracted 12.9% year over year, but that’s not even the worst part. Distressingly, Nio’s net earnings loss ballooned 392.1% year over year to the equivalent of $577.9 million in Q3 2022.Now, we can start to see why NIO stock hasn’t regained its footing this year. Currently, there are too many holes in the bull thesis for investors to put their faith in Nio.What You Can Do NowThis isn’t to suggest that Nio is a toxic business that’s about to go bankrupt. There may be an appropriate time to consider NIO stock in the future.However, once again, let’s not confuse a low share price with a compelling value. The macro-level and company-specific conditions simply don’t favor an investment in Nio, so feel free to stay on the sidelines for
