The major U.S. indexes were a year removed from their pandemic bottom and had delivered one of the strongest bounces from a bear-market in history. What's more, there was abundant access to cheap capital and the Federal Reserve was intent on maintaining its dovish monetary stance.But over the past 12 months, the wheels fell off the wagon in dramatic fashion -- and the nation's central bank may be to blame.While no one ever said overseeing monetary policy for the largest economy in the world would be easy, in hindsight the Fed left its foot on the accelerator for far too long. A combination of historically low lending rates and ongoing quantitative easing measures designed to drive down long-term bond yields has played a big role in sending the U.S. inflation rate to a four-decade high. In fact, a good argument can be made that the growth-focused Nasdaq Composite's brief tumble into bear market territory was primarily Fed-induced.Although big drops in the market can be scary at times -- especially when they're caused by the Fed shifting course -- they're historically the best time to put your money to work. That's because all notable declines are eventually erased by a bull market rally.Below are three of the smartest stocks investors can buy in a Fed-driven bear market.Berkshire HathawayThe first stock investors would be wise to buy in a Fed-induced bear market is conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway ( BRK.A )( BRK.B).Berkshire may not be a household name, but its CEO, billionaire Warren Buffett, probably is. Since taking over as CEO of the company in 1965, Buffett has overseen more than $760 billion in valuation creation for shareholders (himself included), and he's led Berkshire's Class A shares (BRK.A) to an average annual gain of just over 20%. In aggregate, we're talking about an increase of 4,210,069%, as of April 7.One of Buffett's not-so-subtle secrets to success is that he's packed Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio with cyclical companies. These are businesses that thrive when the economy is firing on all cylinders and struggle a bit when recessions strike. Instead of trying to time these inevitable downturns, Buffett has positioned Berkshire Hathaway and its investment portfolio to take advantage of long-winded expansions. After all, economic expansions last considerably longer than recessions.Something else to consider is that a sizable percentage of Berkshire Hathaway's owned and invested assets are in the financial sector. The Fed has made clear that it intends to reduce its balance sheet (i.e., sell Treasury bonds) and raise interest rates. Higher lending rates will be a boon for bank stocks that have variable-rate outstanding loans, and it'll also allow insurance companies to generate more interest income on their float (i.e., their unused premium). In short, Berkshire Hathaway is well-positioned to navigate a rising-rate environment.Berkshire Hathaway's success is also a function of Buffett's love for dividend stocks. Companies that pay a dividend are often profitable, time-tested, and have transparent long-term outlooks. This year, Berkshire should collect in excess of $5 billion in dividend income, with north of $4 billion coming from just a half-dozen holdings.Long story short, riding Buffett's coattails has long been a moneymaking investment strategy.Image source: Getty Images.CrowdStrike HoldingsJust because the stock market is falling and the Fed is scrambling to control historically high inflation, it doesn't mean growth stocks are off-limits for patient investors. A perfect example of a fast-paced company that's a smart buy is cybersecurity stock CrowdStrike Holdings (CRWD).Since the pandemic began more than two years ago, businesses have accelerated the pace at which they've moved data online and into the cloud. Given that hackers and robots don't take time off just because Wall Street had a bad day, the onus of protecting this data is increasingly falling onto third-party providers like CrowdStrike. Put another way, cybersecurity has evolved from an optional to essential service over the past two-plus decades.While the cybersecurity industry should be home to a number of winners, CrowdStrike really stands out for its cloud-native Falcon security platform. Falcon oversees approximately 1 trillion events per day and relies on artificial intelligence to grow more efficient at recognizing and responding to potential end-user threats. CrowdStrike isn't the cheapest solution in cybersecurity, but its gross retention rate of 98% suggests it's one of the best.Additional proof of Falcon's success can be seen in CrowdStrike's subscriber figures and organic growth rate. Over the past five years, the company's subscriber count has grown by an annual average of 105%. What's more, CrowdStrike has reported 16 consecutive quarters with a dollar-based retention rate of at least 120%.  This is a fancy way of saying that existing clients spent at least 20% more on a year-over-year basis for four consecutive years (16 quarters).As the premier name in cybersecurity, any significant pullback in a Fed-driven bear market should be viewed as a buying opportunity.Image source: Getty Images.Walgreens Boots AllianceA third exceptionally smart stock to buy during a Fed-induced bear market is pharmacy chain Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA).Generally, healthcare stocks are nearly impervious to wild vacillations in the stock market and, to some extent, the U.S. economy. Because we can't control when we get sick, there's always demand for prescription drugs, medical devices, and healthcare services.However, Walgreens proved to be a bit of an exception to this rule during the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since pharmacy chains are reliant on foot traffic into their stores, the pandemic put a hurting on Walgreens and its peers for a couple of quarters. With the worst of the pandemic likely in the rearview mirror, Walgreens looks poised to shine no matter what the nation's central bank does on the interest rate front.What makes Walgreens Boots Alliance such an attractive investment is the company's multipoint strategy to lift its margins and organic growth rate. As an example, Walgreens has slashed more than $2 billion in annual operating expenses a full year ahead of schedule. At the same time, it's spent aggressively on digitization initiatives that'll promote direct-to-consumer sales. Even though its brick-and-mortar locations will remain its primary revenue driver, the convenience of online sales should have no trouble boosting the company's organic growth rate.Speaking of organic growth, Walgreens has also partnered with and invested in VillageMD. The two have opened more than 100 full-service clinics nationwide, as of Feb. 28, 2022, with the goal of reaching at least 600 clinics in more than 30 U.S. markets by the end of 2025.  The key here is that these are full-service, physician-staffed clinics, and can therefore handle much more than administering a vaccine. The Trade Desk, Paycom Software, and Align Technology are three that I believe have that potential.Let's look at their earnings, growth rates, and valuations to see how they could transform a $100,000 portfolio into a seven-figure retirement nest egg over the next decade.1. The Trade DeskThere is an old saying in the advertising business that half of ad spending is wasted, but nobody knows which half. The Trade Desk is eliminating that waste with its data-driven self-service platform. Its customers manage their ad spending on more than 500 billion digital opportunities per day. The goal is to help customers make the most intelligent ad-buying decisions and provide them with an abundance of performance feedback. In today's digital economy, it's invaluable.And business is growing like a weed. Earnings per share (EPS) are expected to climb more than 23% next year. That's a reasonable rate to use in our calculation. The company has grown revenue 375% over the past five years. Also, gross spend on Trade Desk's platform climbed 47% last year to $6.2 billion. And management pegs the global ad-spend opportunity at $750 billion, with about $50 billion in display advertising. That offers plenty of room to grow for years.TTD revenue (TTM). Data by YCharts. TTM = trailing 12 months.Wall Street sees the potential. The Trade Desk's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio has varied between 40 and 120 over the past few years. We'll use 50 for our calculations.Doing the math on an initial investment of $33,333.33 (a third of the $100,000) leads to a stake in The Trade Desk worth almost $190,000 in 2032. That relies on bold assumptions. But they are well within what the company has delivered so far.2. PaycomPaycom offers businesses a platform to manage employee payroll, time and attendance, and benefits administration, among other things. Its product was built for the cloud. That's different from many traditional human capital management (HCM) vendors that have pieced together acquired software over the years.Customers can clearly tell the difference. Paycom topped $1 billion in revenue last year for the first time, a 26% increase over 2020. Most importantly, that revenue is recurring and sticky. Revenue retention was 94% in 2021. Customers stick around once they start using the platform.Before the pandemic, Paycom's top line was expanding between 30% and 45% each year. We'll use last year's 26% for our calculation and apply a multiple of 60 times earnings. That seems high. But shares have stayed within a range of 50 to 100 times earnings over the years.For Paycom, that one-third of the $100,000 hypothetically invested in 2022 turns into more than $350,000 a decade from now. That would make it a 10-bagger. While it might seem unlikely, if the market continues to reward predictable revenue, and Paycom continues to grow, it's possible. After all, its $1.1 billion in 2021 revenue is a drop in the bucket of an HCM market that is predicted to reach $47 billion by 2029.3. Align TechnologyThe company best known for its Invisalign clear teeth-straightening system is actually a vertically integrated combination of several businesses. They all help people get straighter teeth faster, and orthodontists and dentists see more clients every year. It also provides scanners and software -- two acquisitions -- that help practitioners develop and communicate a plan for patients.The growth opportunity is tremendous. Management estimates 500 million potential customers in the world with 21 million orthodontic starts each year -- two-thirds of them teens. For context, it shipped 2.55 million aligners last year.Align is the crown jewel in our attempt to grow a million-dollar portfolio. The $33,333.33 invested in it could grow over the next 10 years into $461,000. That's assuming the $12.50 analysts expect this year grows at the midpoint of management's long-term guidance of 20% to 30% a year. Similar to the other two stocks, Align typically trades at a premium. We'll use 50 times earnings, slightly above the bottom of the 40 to 100 historical P/E range. It's an amazing potential return when running the numbers.\"It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future\"That quote from Yankees legend Yogi Berra underscores a key point in the analysis above. No one knows what the world is going to look like in 10 years. Investors with a long-term mindset need to block out the noise without being irresponsible.The Trade Desk, Paycom, and Align have all grown rapidly while turning a profit. I expect that to continue. (NYSE:PLTR) is a better buy compared with Snowflake Inc. (SNOW). I prefer PLTR over SNOW because the former has maintained a good balance between revenue growth and profit margins. Palantir is expected to grow its top line by more than +30% every year going forward, while still delivering normalized net profit margins of above +20% in the future. In comparison, Snowflake&#39;s top line growth expectations are better, but it is relatively less profitable. More importantly, Palantir is much cheaper than Snowflake based on the forward Enterprise Value-to-Revenue metric.</p><p>How Are SNOW And PLTR&#39;s Stock Performance?</p><p>The year-to-date stock price performance of SNOW and PLTR have been poor on both an absolute and relative basis.</p><p><b>Snowflake&#39;s And Palantir&#39;s 2022 Year-To-Date Share Price Performance</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3dfec436e13ecbd10b4390c8ec9c312b\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"221\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Seeking Alpha</p><p>The shares of Palantir and Snowflake were down by -29.5% and -37.4%, respectively, so far this year. During the same period, the S&amp;P 500 declined by a relatively modest -5.2%. Both SNOW and PLTR saw their shares fall the most around mid-March 2022. March 11, 2022, <i>Seeking Alpha News</i>articlehighlighted that &#34;Snowflake shares fell sharply&#34; on the day alongside &#34;several other cloud-related stocks, as investors continued to shun technology stocks.&#34;</p><p>Apart from weak investor sentiment, which has hurt the share price performance of technology stocks in general, there are also company-specific headwinds relating to Snowflake and Palantir, which I detail in the next section.</p><p>SNOW And PLTR Stock Key Metrics</p><p>Both SNOW&#39;s and PLTR&#39;s forward-looking guidance disappointed the market. This was a key factor that led to the sell-down in their shares in 2022 year-to-date.</p><p>Starting with Palantir, the company released the company&#39;s Q4 2021 financial results in a media release issued on February 17, 2022, before the market opened. PLTR&#39;s shares subsequently fell by -16% to close at $11.77 on the day of the earnings release. Palantir has yet to fully recover from its post-results announcement correction, as its last closing share price of $12.84 as of April 7, 2022, was still -8% below its pre-results stock price of $13.97 (closing price on February 16th).</p><p>PLTR&#39;s top line expanded by +34% YOY to $433 million in the fourth quarter of 2021. This was+4%above what the market had expected. The company&#39;s robust revenue growth was driven by a +71% YOY increase in the number of customers, from 139 as of December 31, 2020, to 237 as of year-end 2021, as per its recent quarterly results presentation. Palantir grew its client base much faster than what Wall Street was expecting; the sell-side&#39;s consensus 2021 year-end estimate was 219 clients, according to<i>S&amp;P Capital IQ</i>.</p><p>However, Palantir&#39;s non-GAAP adjusted earnings per share contracted from $0.03 in Q4 2020 to $0.02 in Q4 2021. More significantly, PLTR&#39;s fourth quarter bottom line was approximately-44%below the market consensus EPS forecast. Palantir&#39;s total adjusted costs (excluding stock-based compensation) rose by +42% YOY to $309 million in the most recent quarter. This was largely attributable to a substantial jump in commercial sales headcount, from 12 as of end-2020 to 80 as of December 31, 2021, as indicated in PLTR&#39;s Q4 2021 results presentation.</p><p>Looking forward, PLTR&#39;s revenue guidance was encouraging. As per its Q4 2021 earnings press release, Palantir guided for Q1 2022 revenue of $443 million (implying +30% YOY top line expansion) and &#34;annual revenue growth of 30% or greater through 2025.&#34;</p><p>However, Palantir&#39;s near-term profitability guidance didn&#39;t meet market expectations. The company expects to achieve a non-GAAP adjusted operating profit margin of 23% in the first quarter of this year, which is much lower than Wall Street&#39;s consensus Q1 2022 operating margin estimate of 28%, as per<i>S&amp;P Capital IQ</i>. At the <i>Morgan Stanley</i>(MS)Technology, Media &amp; Telecom Conference on March 9, 2022, PLTR explained that &#34;the investments in the product&#34; in 2021 &#34;drove more improvement faster than we actually thought they might,&#34; and the company is &#34;giving ourselves a little space there to invest as aggressively as possible.&#34;</p><p>Moving on to Snowflake, its Q4 2021 revenue of $360 million beat the sell-side consensus by+3%, and this represented a +102% YOY growth. But SNOW&#39;s shares still dropped by -15%, from a $264.69 close on March 2, 2022, to $224.02 on March 3, 2022 (post-earnings release). In the next one month or so, Snowflake&#39;s stock price declined further, closing at $213.88 as of April 7, 2022.</p><p>SNOW&#39;s shares performed poorly because investors were unsatisfied with the company&#39;s fiscal 2023 (YE January 31) revenue growth guidance. Based on the midpoint of Snowflake&#39;s management, the company expected its revenue to increase by +66% in FY 2023. This implied a substantial slowdown in SNOW&#39;s top line expansion, as the company&#39;s sales grew by +106% in fiscal 2022.</p><p>Snowflake attributed the weaker-than-expected revenue growth guidance for FY 2023 to platform performance improvements, which will provide more value to its clients. SNOW acknowledged at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media &amp; Telecom Conference on March 8, 2022, that &#34;every performance improvement we do, we may have a revenue hit,&#34; but it stressed that &#34;those customers are consuming more&#34; in around half a year&#39;s time.</p><p>In the subsequent two sections of the article, I will touch on the similarities and the differences between Palantir and Snowflake.</p><p>Do Snowflake And Palantir Share The Same Market?</p><p>Snowflake and Palantir do share the same market to a large extent.</p><p>A December 2020research report published by <i>Harris Williams</i> classified both PLTR and SNOW as infrastructure software companies. More specifically, the investment bank placed these two companies in the &#34;data&#34; sub-segment of the infrastructure software sector alongside other listed companies like Splunk (SPLK) and Alteryx (AYX), among others.</p><p><b>Harris Williams&#39;Definition Of The Data Sub-Segment Of The Infrastructure Software Sector</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/95d28544977ca9c17ef60304a8f96c55\" tg-width=\"474\" tg-height=\"280\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Harris Williams</p><p>In a blog post published on November 11, 2020, Palantir describes itself as a &#34;software company&#34; which builds &#34;digital infrastructure for data-driven operations.&#34; This provides support for Harris Williams&#39; categorization of PLTR as an infrastructure company that belongs in the data sub-category.</p><p>In summary, both companies operate in the infrastructure software market. This is also where the similarities between PLTR and SNOW end, as I highlight in the next section.</p><p>How Do Snowflake And Palantir Differ?</p><p>Referring to PLTR&#39;s November 2020 blog post (which I referred to in the preceding section) again, Palantir mentioned that it plays the role of &#34;data processor.&#34; PLTR emphasized that its platforms &#34;allow organizations to better manage&#34; data &#34;by bringing the right data to the people&#34; and enabling &#34;them to take data-driven decisions&#34; and &#34;conduct sophisticated analytic.&#34;</p><p>In contrast, Snowflake&#39;s cloud data platform, known as Data Cloud, is mainly focused on data warehousing and data sharing; and it partners with other companies to offer solutions such as data analytics to its clients, as per the chart below.</p><p><b>SNOW&#39;s Data Cloud Platform And Partnerships With Other Data Analytics Companies</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2ced24e78a2353a0f9f8a45e9fab883b\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"314\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Snowflake</p><p>I touch on the two companies&#39; growth prospects in the long run in the next section.</p><p>What Are Snowflake And Palantir&#39;s Long-Term Outlooks?</p><p>Both Snowflake and Palantir have long growth runways.</p><p>Interactive Data Trends (IDC) has forecast that new data created will expand at a CAGR of +23%, from 64.1ZB in 2020 to 175ZB in 2025, according to January 31, 2022, article published in <i>CDO Trends</i>. As more data gets created, it is natural that this will boost demand for data warehousing, sharing, processing, and analytics going forward. This will be positive for both PLTR and SNOW.</p><p>PLTR and SNOW are expected to deliver robust top-line growth and profit margin expansion over the next few years. Snowflake will grow its revenue at a faster pace compared with Palantir, but the former&#39;s profitability will still be inferior to that of the latter.</p><p>According to consensus sell-side financial estimates sourced from<i>S&amp;P Capital IQ</i>, Snowflake&#39;s sales are forecasted to increase by a forward four-year CAGR of +57.0%. Over the same period, Palantir&#39;s top line is predicted to grow by a slower CAGR of +34.5%, which is still pretty decent. In terms of profitability, Wall Street expects PLTR&#39;s normalized net profit margin to widen from 20.0% in 2021 to 26.8% by 2025. In comparison, SNOW&#39;s normalized net profit margin is forecasted to improve from 0.3% in fiscal 2022 (YE January 31 or approximating calendar year 2021) to 9.1% in FY 2026.</p><p>SNOW is a pioneer and leading player in the cloud data warehousing space, which explains its strong revenue growth. But Snowflake&#39;s profit margins are low on an absolute basis and inferior to that of PLTR as well. A key factor contributing to Snowflake&#39;s modest profitability is the company&#39;s dependence on third-party vendors such as Microsoft&#39;s (MSFT) Azure and Amazon&#39;s (AMZN) AWS. In my July 20, 2021,article for SNOW, I noted that the company&#39;s key suppliers of public cloud services are also the company&#39;s competitors and &#34;have a big impact on Snowflake&#39;s path to profitability.&#34; This is the most significant downside risk for SNOW.</p><p>On the other hand, a key concern for Palantir has been its reliance on government organizations. This implies that the company&#39;s revenue can be negatively impacted when the government&#39;s budget shrinks. But there have been encouraging signs with respect to client (commercial customers versus government clients) diversification in recent quarters. PTLR&#39;s commercial segment has been rapidly growing in recent quarters, as its commercial revenue growth went from +28% YOY and +37% YOY in Q2 2021 and Q3 2021, respectively, to +47% YOY in Q4 2021.</p><p>In comparison, Palantir&#39;s government revenue increased by a slower +26% YOY in the fourth quarter of last year. Also, as I mentioned in an earlier section of my article, Palantir has invested significantly in commercial sales headcount so as to further support the growth of the commercial segment.</p><p>In a nutshell, both companies&#39; long-term outlooks are decent. But PLTR has struck a better balance between top-line growth and profitability compared with SNOW, as evidenced by the consensus financial forecasts.</p><p>Is SNOW Or PLTR Stock A Better Buy?</p><p>PLTR stock is a better buy. Palantir boasts superior profit margins, and Snowflake is growing its top line at a much faster pace. But the gap in valuations between the two is huge; PLTR and SNOW are valued by the market at consensus forward next twelve months&#39; Enterprise Value-to-Revenue multiples of 11.9 times and 30.7 times, respectively, according to<i>S&amp;P Capital IQ</i>. Palantir is expected to grow its top line by more than +30% every year going forward, while still delivering normalized net profit margins of above +20% in the future. In comparison, Snowflake's top line growth expectations are better, but it is relatively less profitable. More importantly, Palantir is much cheaper than Snowflake based on the forward Enterprise Value-to-Revenue metric.How Are SNOW And PLTR's Stock Performance?The year-to-date stock price performance of SNOW and PLTR have been poor on both an absolute and relative basis.Snowflake's And Palantir's 2022 Year-To-Date Share Price PerformanceSeeking AlphaThe shares of Palantir and Snowflake were down by -29.5% and -37.4%, respectively, so far this year. During the same period, the S&P 500 declined by a relatively modest -5.2%. Both SNOW and PLTR saw their shares fall the most around mid-March 2022. March 11, 2022, Seeking Alpha Newsarticlehighlighted that \"Snowflake shares fell sharply\" on the day alongside \"several other cloud-related stocks, as investors continued to shun technology stocks.\"Apart from weak investor sentiment, which has hurt the share price performance of technology stocks in general, there are also company-specific headwinds relating to Snowflake and Palantir, which I detail in the next section.SNOW And PLTR Stock Key MetricsBoth SNOW's and PLTR's forward-looking guidance disappointed the market. This was a key factor that led to the sell-down in their shares in 2022 year-to-date.Starting with Palantir, the company released the company's Q4 2021 financial results in a media release issued on February 17, 2022, before the market opened. PLTR's shares subsequently fell by -16% to close at $11.77 on the day of the earnings release. Palantir has yet to fully recover from its post-results announcement correction, as its last closing share price of $12.84 as of April 7, 2022, was still -8% below its pre-results stock price of $13.97 (closing price on February 16th).PLTR's top line expanded by +34% YOY to $433 million in the fourth quarter of 2021. This was+4%above what the market had expected. The company's robust revenue growth was driven by a +71% YOY increase in the number of customers, from 139 as of December 31, 2020, to 237 as of year-end 2021, as per its recent quarterly results presentation. Palantir grew its client base much faster than what Wall Street was expecting; the sell-side's consensus 2021 year-end estimate was 219 clients, according toS&P Capital IQ.However, Palantir's non-GAAP adjusted earnings per share contracted from $0.03 in Q4 2020 to $0.02 in Q4 2021. More significantly, PLTR's fourth quarter bottom line was approximately-44%below the market consensus EPS forecast. Palantir's total adjusted costs (excluding stock-based compensation) rose by +42% YOY to $309 million in the most recent quarter. This was largely attributable to a substantial jump in commercial sales headcount, from 12 as of end-2020 to 80 as of December 31, 2021, as indicated in PLTR's Q4 2021 results presentation.Looking forward, PLTR's revenue guidance was encouraging. As per its Q4 2021 earnings press release, Palantir guided for Q1 2022 revenue of $443 million (implying +30% YOY top line expansion) and \"annual revenue growth of 30% or greater through 2025.\"However, Palantir's near-term profitability guidance didn't meet market expectations. The company expects to achieve a non-GAAP adjusted operating profit margin of 23% in the first quarter of this year, which is much lower than Wall Street's consensus Q1 2022 operating margin estimate of 28%, as perS&P Capital IQ. At the Morgan Stanley(MS)Technology, Media & Telecom Conference on March 9, 2022, PLTR explained that \"the investments in the product\" in 2021 \"drove more improvement faster than we actually thought they might,\" and the company is \"giving ourselves a little space there to invest as aggressively as possible.\"Moving on to Snowflake, its Q4 2021 revenue of $360 million beat the sell-side consensus by+3%, and this represented a +102% YOY growth. But SNOW's shares still dropped by -15%, from a $264.69 close on March 2, 2022, to $224.02 on March 3, 2022 (post-earnings release). In the next one month or so, Snowflake's stock price declined further, closing at $213.88 as of April 7, 2022.SNOW's shares performed poorly because investors were unsatisfied with the company's fiscal 2023 (YE January 31) revenue growth guidance. Based on the midpoint of Snowflake's management, the company expected its revenue to increase by +66% in FY 2023. This implied a substantial slowdown in SNOW's top line expansion, as the company's sales grew by +106% in fiscal 2022.Snowflake attributed the weaker-than-expected revenue growth guidance for FY 2023 to platform performance improvements, which will provide more value to its clients. More specifically, the investment bank placed these two companies in the \"data\" sub-segment of the infrastructure software sector alongside other listed companies like Splunk (SPLK) and Alteryx (AYX), among others.Harris Williams'Definition Of The Data Sub-Segment Of The Infrastructure Software SectorHarris WilliamsIn a blog post published on November 11, 2020, Palantir describes itself as a \"software company\" which builds \"digital infrastructure for data-driven operations.\" This provides support for Harris Williams' categorization of PLTR as an infrastructure company that belongs in the data sub-category.In summary, both companies operate in the infrastructure software market. This is also where the similarities between PLTR and SNOW end, as I highlight in the next section.How Do Snowflake And Palantir Differ?Referring to PLTR's November 2020 blog post (which I referred to in the preceding section) again, Palantir mentioned that it plays the role of \"data processor.\" PLTR emphasized that its platforms \"allow organizations to better manage\" data \"by bringing the right data to the people\" and enabling \"them to take data-driven decisions\" and \"conduct sophisticated analytic.\"In contrast, Snowflake's cloud data platform, known as Data Cloud, is mainly focused on data warehousing and data sharing; and it partners with other companies to offer solutions such as data analytics to its clients, as per the chart below.SNOW's Data Cloud Platform And Partnerships With Other Data Analytics CompaniesSnowflakeI touch on the two companies' growth prospects in the long run in the next section.What Are Snowflake And Palantir's Long-Term Outlooks?Both Snowflake and Palantir have long growth runways.Interactive Data Trends (IDC) has forecast that new data created will expand at a CAGR of +23%, from 64.1ZB in 2020 to 175ZB in 2025, according to January 31, 2022, article published in CDO Trends. As more data gets created, it is natural that this will boost demand for data warehousing, sharing, processing, and analytics going forward. This will be positive for both PLTR and SNOW.PLTR and SNOW are expected to deliver robust top-line growth and profit margin expansion over the next few years. Snowflake will grow its revenue at a faster pace compared with Palantir, but the former's profitability will still be inferior to that of the latter.According to consensus sell-side financial estimates sourced fromS&P Capital IQ, Snowflake's sales are forecasted to increase by a forward four-year CAGR of +57.0%. Over the same period, Palantir's top line is predicted to grow by a slower CAGR of +34.5%, which is still pretty decent. In terms of profitability, Wall Street expects PLTR's normalized net profit margin to widen from 20.0% in 2021 to 26.8% by 2025. In comparison, SNOW's normalized net profit margin is forecasted to improve from 0.3% in fiscal 2022 (YE January 31 or approximating calendar year 2021) to 9.1% in FY 2026.SNOW is a pioneer and leading player in the cloud data warehousing space, which explains its strong revenue growth. But Snowflake's profit margins are low on an absolute basis and inferior to that of PLTR as well. A key factor contributing to Snowflake's modest profitability is the company's dependence on third-party vendors such as Microsoft's (MSFT) Azure and Amazon's (AMZN) AWS. In my July 20, 2021,article for SNOW, I noted that the company's key suppliers of public cloud services are also the company's competitors and \"have a big impact on Snowflake's path to profitability.\" This is the most significant downside risk for SNOW.On the other hand, a key concern for Palantir has been its reliance on government organizations. This implies that the company's revenue can be negatively impacted when the government's budget shrinks. But there have been encouraging signs with respect to client (commercial customers versus government clients) diversification in recent quarters. PTLR's commercial segment has been rapidly growing in recent quarters, as its commercial revenue growth went from +28% YOY and +37% YOY in Q2 2021 and Q3 2021, respectively, to +47% YOY in Q4 2021.In comparison, Palantir's government revenue increased by a slower +26% YOY in the fourth quarter of last year. Also, as I mentioned in an earlier section of my article, Palantir has invested significantly in commercial sales headcount so as to further support the growth of the commercial segment.In a nutshell, both companies' long-term outlooks are decent. But PLTR has struck a better balance between top-line growth and profitability compared with SNOW, as evidenced by the consensus financial forecasts.Is SNOW Or PLTR Stock A Better Buy?PLTR stock is a better buy. Palantir boasts superior profit margins, and Snowflake is growing its top line at a much faster pace. But the gap in valuations between the two is huge; PLTR and SNOW are valued by the market at consensus forward next twelve months' Enterprise Value-to-Revenue multiples of 11.9 times and 30.7 times, respectively, according toS&P Capital IQ. Taking into account the difference in the two companies' valuations and future financial forecasts, I view Palantir as the more appealing investment candidate of the NASA&#39;s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, beginning a landmark debut flight and orbital science mission for the Houston-based startup Axiom Space Inc.</p><p>If all goes as planned, the quartet led by retired NASA astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria will arrive at the space station on Saturday, after a 20-hour-plus flight, as their SpaceX-supplied Crew Dragon capsule docks with the orbiting outpost some 250 miles (400 km) above the Earth.</p><p>SpaceX, the privately funded company of billionaire Elon Musk, also is providing the Falcon 9 rocket to propel the Crew Dragon to space and is directing mission control for the flight from its headquarters near Los Angeles.</p><p>A joint Axiom-SpaceX live webcast showed the four-man team inside the crew compartment, seated calmly in their helmeted white-and-black flight suits as ground technicians prepared the spacecraft for blastoff.</p><p>SpaceX launch commentator John Insprucker said weather conditions were &#34;go for launch,&#34; with blue skies and light clouds over the cape.</p><p>NASA, besides furnishing the launch site, assumes responsibility for the astronauts once they rendezvous with the space station to undertake eight days of science and biomedical research.</p><p>COMMERCIAL SPACEFLIGHT MILESTONE</p><p>The mission, representing a partnership among Axiom, SpaceX and NASA, is touted by all three as a major step in the latest expansion of commercial space ventures collectively referred to by insiders as the low-Earth orbit economy, or &#34;LEO economy&#34; for short.</p><p>While the space station has hosted civilian visitors from time to time, the Ax-1 mission will mark the first all-commercial team of astronauts to use ISS for its intended purpose as an orbiting laboratory.</p><p>They will be sharing the weightless work environment with seven regular crew members aboard the ISS - three American astronauts, a German astronaut and three Russian cosmonauts.</p><p>Lopez-Alegria, 63, is the Spanish-born mission commander and Axiom vice president of business development. His second-in-command is Larry Connor, an entrepreneur and aerobatics aviator from Ohio designated as the mission pilot. Connor is in his 70s but the company did not provide his precise age.</p><p>Rounding out the Ax-1 team are Israeli investor-philanthropist and former fighter pilot Eytan Stibbe, 64, and Canadian businessman and philanthropist Mark Pathy, 52, both serving as mission specialists. Stibbe is set to become the second Israeli in space, after Ilan Ramon, who perished with six NASA crewmates in the 2003 space shuttle Columbia disaster.</p><p>The Axiom crew members may appear to have a lot in common with many of the wealthy passengers taking suborbital rides lately aboard the Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic services offered by billionaires Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson, respectively.</p><p>But Axiom executives said their mission goes far beyond space tourism, with each crew member undergoing hundreds of hours in astronaut training with both NASA and SpaceX.</p><p>The Ax-1 team also will be conducting more than two dozen science experiments aboard ISS, including research on brain health, cardiac stem cells, cancer and aging as well as a technology demonstration to produce optics using the surface tension of fluids in microgravity, company executives said.</p><p>Launched to orbit in 1998, the space station has been continuously occupied since 2000 under a U.S.-Russian-led partnership including Canada, Japan and 11 European countries.</p><p>NASA has no plans to invest in a new space station once ISS is retired, sometime around 2030. But that’s old news, and the current environment is much more challenging. A point of differentiation for companies in 2022 will be the ability to keep profit margins intact or growing despite elevated inflation and slowing economic growth. Their stocks should outperform.</p><p>Companies can achieve pricing power in several different ways. A business can sell a good or service that’s vital to customers or limited in supply, giving them no option but to pay up—the product has low price elasticity, to put it in economic terms. That could be gasoline at the only station for miles, toilet paper at the grocery store, or accounting services during tax season.</p><p>The fewer direct competitors has a company has, the greater its ability to set prices. A strong brand that has particular affinity or loyalty from customers can also lead to greater pricing power. Think of the typically higher price per unit for Procter &amp; Gamble’s (ticker: PG) Tide laundry detergent versus the equivalent store brand.</p><p>A company can also innovate and improve its offerings, increasing prices as it rolls out the upgraded offerings. If the price hikes exceed the cost of the improvements, that’s pricing power. It’s common in new versions of software, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, semiconductors, and other high tech goods and services.</p><p>Finally, companies can expand their profit margins by becoming more efficient and productive, or by leveraging economies of scale. That brings down the cost of goods sold per unit produced, and increases profits without raising prices.</p><p>Companies with pricing power are particularly attractive for the current environment, says Eric Schoenstein, chief investment officer of Jensen Investment Management.</p><p>Inflation is running at four-decade highs, affecting businesses’ input costs—investors will want to own those companies that can pass along that inflation. The new inflation dynamic comes just as economic expansion is waning, suggesting slower GDP growth ahead. Stocks of companies that can maintain and increase their profit margins in 2022 should be in demand.</p><p>“There are so many cost pressures out there these days,” says Schoenstein, whose Oregon-based firm manages about $14.5 billion. “We’re trying to find businesses that have resilience through those difficult circumstances. The ones that have already been tested and come out the other side should have the ability to do it again.”</p><p>Barron’s screened for S&amp;P 500 companies that grew their gross margin (revenue minus the cost of goods sold, divided by revenue) from 2020 to 2021 as the economy rebounded, but also had rising, positive gross margins in at least the three years before the Covid-19 pandemic. Those that were best able to demonstrate pricing power in a 2% annual inflation environment should be better set up to do it when inflation is running above 7% too. The companies must also have been free cash flow positive in 2020 and 2021, demonstrating their businesses’ resilience through an economic downturn.</p><p>The screen yielded 27 names. As with any screen, it’s a blunt instrument that serves as a starting point for further analysis. Their products and services tend to be differentiated from the competition, and rely on constant innovation and updates. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CUBI\">Customers</a>’ need or desire to have the latest software, semiconductors, treatments, or medical devices gives the companies pricing power and the ability to maintain profit margins even in an inflationary or decelerating-growth environment.</p><p>For McDonald’s (MCD) and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/YUM\">Yum</a>! Brands (YUM)—which owns KFC and Taco Bell—inflation is showing up in costs of labor, packaging, beef, and other inputs. The fast-food chains are raising prices to offset that on a market by market basis. McDonald’s overall prices rose by about 6% in the U.S. in 2021.</p><p>“We are seeing both labor and commodity inflation,” said McDonald’s CFO Kevin Ozan at a conference in March. “Our prices are set by our franchisees …We generally will take smaller, more frequent increases than less frequent large increases. And we do try to tailor all of those increases to the local market.”</p><p>Several S&amp;P 500 industrials have been able to consistently increase their gross margins, including <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ROK\">Rockwell Automation</a> (ROK), <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BGC\">General</a> Electric (GE), and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/LMT\">Lockheed Martin</a> (LMT). A business can sell a good or service that’s vital to customers or limited in supply, giving them no option but to pay up—the product has low price elasticity, to put it in economic terms. That could be gasoline at the only station for miles, toilet paper at the grocery store, or accounting services during tax season.The fewer direct competitors has a company has, the greater its ability to set prices. A strong brand that has particular affinity or loyalty from customers can also lead to greater pricing power. Think of the typically higher price per unit for Procter & Gamble’s (ticker: PG) Tide laundry detergent versus the equivalent store brand.A company can also innovate and improve its offerings, increasing prices as it rolls out the upgraded offerings. If the price hikes exceed the cost of the improvements, that’s pricing power. It’s common in new versions of software, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, semiconductors, and other high tech goods and services.Finally, companies can expand their profit margins by becoming more efficient and productive, or by leveraging economies of scale. That brings down the cost of goods sold per unit produced, and increases profits without raising prices.Companies with pricing power are particularly attractive for the current environment, says Eric Schoenstein, chief investment officer of Jensen Investment Management.Inflation is running at four-decade highs, affecting businesses’ input costs—investors will want to own those companies that can pass along that inflation. The new inflation dynamic comes just as economic expansion is waning, suggesting slower GDP growth ahead. Stocks of companies that can maintain and increase their profit margins in 2022 should be in demand.“There are so many cost pressures out there these days,” says Schoenstein, whose Oregon-based firm manages about $14.5 billion. “We’re trying to find businesses that have resilience through those difficult circumstances. The ones that have already been tested and come out the other side should have the ability to do it again.”Barron’s screened for S&P 500 companies that grew their gross margin (revenue minus the cost of goods sold, divided by revenue) from 2020 to 2021 as the economy rebounded, but also had rising, positive gross margins in at least the three years before the Covid-19 pandemic. Apple’s own payment system takes a 30% cut from large developers.</p>\n<p>Data from the app tracker SensorTower shows that in calendar 2020, Apple had overall revenue from the App Store of $72.3 billion, generating an estimated $21.7 billion in fees, or about 7% of Apple’s overall revenues. That includes $21 billion in spending in the U.S., generating about $6.3 billion in fees, or about 2% of annualized revenues.</p>\n<p>SensorTower estimates that mobile-game spending in the App Store in calendar 2020 was $47.6 billion, generating $14.3 billion in fees, or a little under 5% of Apple’s total revenues.</p>\n<p>Gene Munster, managing director of the venture firm Loup Capital and a former sell-side analyst with a long history of tracking Apple, estimated that the App Store accounts for about 14% of the company’s profits.
