Here are three meme stocks that Wall Street thinks will plunge by more than 20% within the next 12 months.</p>\n<p>AMC Entertainment</p>\n<p><b>AMC Entertainment</b>(NYSE:AMC)ranks as the best-performing meme stock of all. Shares of the movie theater operator have skyrocketed close to 2,500% year to date.</p>\n<p>The consensus among analysts, though, is that the stock could lose 90% of its current value. Even the most optimistic analyst surveyed by Refinitiv has a price target for AMC that's more than 70% below the current share price.</p>\n<p>But isn't AMC's business picking up? Yep. The easing of restrictions has enabled the company to reopen 99% of its U.S. theaters. AMC could benefit as seating capacity limitations imposed by state and local governments are raised. Thereleases of multiple movies this summerand later this year that are likely to be hits should also help.</p>\n<p>However, Wall Street clearly believes that AMC's share price has gotten way ahead of its business prospects. The stock is trading at nearly eight times higher than it was before the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>\n<p>Clover Health Investments</p>\n<p>Only a few days ago, it looked like&nbsp;<b>Clover Health Investments</b>(NASDAQ:CLOV)might push AMC to the side as the hottest meme stock. Retail investors viewed Clover as a primeshort squeezecandidate.</p>\n<p>Since the beginning of June, shares of Clover Health have jumped more than 65%. Analysts, however, don't expect those gains to last. The average price target for the stock is 25% below the current share price.</p>\n<p>Clover Health's valuation does seem to have gotten out of hand. The healthcare stock currently trades at more than 170 times trailing-12-month sales. That's a nosebleed level, especially considering that the company is the subject of investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission.</p>\n<p>Still, Clover Health could deliver improving financial results this year. The company hopes to significantly increase its membership by targeting the original Medicare program. This represents a major new market opportunity in addition to its current Medicare Advantage business.</p>\n<p>Sundial Growers</p>\n<p>At one point earlier this year,&nbsp;<b>Sundial Growers</b>(NASDAQ:SNDL)appeared to be a legitimate contender to become the biggest winner among meme stocks. The Canadian marijuana stock vaulted more than 520% higher year to date before giving up much of its gains. However, Sundial's share price has still more than doubled in 2021.</p>\n<p>Analysts anticipate that the pot stock could fall even further. The consensus price target for Sundial reflects a 23% discount to its current share price. One analyst even thinks the stock could sink 55%.</p>\n<p>There certainly are reasons to be pessimistic about Sundial's core cannabis business. The company's net cannabis revenue fell year over year in the first quarter of 2021. Although Sundial is taking steps that it hopes will turn things around, it remains to be seen if those efforts will succeed.</p>\n<p>Sundial's business deals could give investors reasons for optimism. After all, the company posted positive adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) in Q1 due to its investments.</p>\n<p>However, the cash that Sundial is using to make these investments has come at the cost of increased dilution of its stock. They were impossible to miss: More than 7,500 spots featuring a frenetic, motor-mouthed spokesperson bombilating frenetically about the “in-saaaaaaaaane” discounts offered by the store.\nCrazy Eddie was never the biggest retail operation in the region. At its peak, there were only 43 locations spread across four states.\nBut the ubiquity of the commercials made it seem more prominent than it actually was, and the excess attention eventually brought harsh spotlights on the financial chicanery perpetrated by its chief executive,Eddie Antar.\nAn Audacious Start:Eddie Antar was born in Brooklyn, New York, on Dec. 18, 1947, the grandson of Syrian Jewish immigrants. Antar was an intelligent youth but found school boring, dropping out at 16 to work odd jobs before setting up a small stand at New York’s Port Authority in the heart of Manhattan where he sold portable televisions. While Antar belatedly realized he had the wrong product line in the wrong location, he used the experience to sharpen his sales skills.\nBy 1969, Antar saved up enough money to go into business with his father Sam and cousin named Ronnie Gindi, creating a retail operation called ERS Electronics. They opened an electronics store in the Kings Highway business shopping district in Brooklyn called Sights and Sounds.\nAt the time, small and independently-owned electronics retailers operated at a significant disadvantage against major chains due to the fair trade laws of the era that enabled manufacturers to establish a single standard retail price all retailers needed to list. To stand out from the competition, Antar challenged the laws by marking down his merchandise, thus offering a discount absent elsewhere in this retail sector.\nSome manufacturers got wise to this and refused to do business with Antar, but he circumvented their boycott by purchasing excess stock from other businesses and obtaining products through grey-market channels from overseas sources.\nThe stress was great and Gindi eventually lost interest in the enterprise, selling his one-third of the business to Antar.\nBut how could the store remain afloat financially through its seemingly reckless discounting? As Antar’s father Sam would later recall in an interview, the lo-fi nature of old-school retailing work enabled them to put their ethics on hold.\n“Back then, most customers paid in cash,” he said. “If we don’t disclose the sale, we keep the sales tax. That’s a good cushion to be able to afford to beat the competition.”\nSights and Sounds began to attract bargain hunters from outside of Brooklyn and Antar turned into something of a one-man, in-store comedy show, going so far as taking the shoes of cash-strapped customers who wanted to buy stereos for deposits and jokingly preventing shoppers from leaving unless they made a purchase.\nAntar’s shtick was so amusing that his first wife Deborah came home one evening in 1971 with a story about how one of her co-workers was talking about his shopping trip to Sights and Sounds.\nThe co-worker, who was unaware of Deborah’s connection to the store, talked happily about dealing with a salesperson that he dubbed “Crazy Eddie.” At that point, Antar decided to change the name of Sights and Sounds to Crazy Eddie.\nAn Advertising Assault:The fair trade law that initially stifled Antar and other smaller businesses was repealed in 1972. Antar’s aggressive discounting and colorful personality enabled him to prepare for a business expansion — he moved to a larger store on Kings Highway, then opened a location in the Long Island town of Syosset in 1973 and in the heart of Manhattan in 1975.\nAntar recognized how his larger competitors used advertising to their advantage, and in 1972 he began marketing his business over the airwaves via WPIX-FM, a popular music station that mixed rock oldies with current Top 40 hits. Antar created an ad copy script that would be read live on the air by Jerry Carroll, one of the station’s disk jockeys. But Carroll decided to improvise, reading the copy in a mock-frenzied manner and creating a new closing line with “Crazy Eddie — his prices are in-saaaaaaaaane.”\nRather than be upset by the deviation to the script, Antar was ecstatic with Carroll’s flippant approach as his delivery stood out wildly from the other advertising running on the station. Antar contracted Carroll to be his on-air pitchman for radio, and in 1975 Carroll was brought in front of the cameras for a television campaign.\nIt was through the television commercials Crazy Eddie became the center of consumer attention. For the next 10 years, the commercials offered endless variations on the same set-up: Carroll wore the same outfit — a dark blazer and a turtleneck sweater — and stood surrounded by displays of the electronics being peddled.\nEach commercial ran about 30 seconds, but Carroll spoke so rapidly that it seemed he was trying to cover 60 seconds of a script in half of his allotted time.\nCarroll’s physical delivery was comically spastic, with flailing arms, bulging eyes and the most manic smile this side of the Joker.\nHe would inevitably challenge shoppers to “shop around, get the best prices you can find, then bring ’em to Crazy Eddie and he’ll beat ’em.” And each commercial ended with Carroll stretching his arms out while proclaiming, “Crazy Eddie — his prices are in-saaaaaaaaane.”\nThere would be a few variations to the presentation, including a Christmas season ad campaign and a “Christmas in August” summertime effort with Carroll dressed in a Santa suit while being pelted with Styrofoam snowballs and papery snowflakes.\nA couple of movie spoof spots put Carroll in parodies of “Casablanca,” “Saturday Night Fever,” “Superman” and “10,” and one ad had a man in a gorilla suit grunting dialogue while subtitles offered simian-to-English translations.\nNot So Funny:After the commercials came on in full force, Crazy Eddie generated $350 million in annual revenue during its prime years.\nBut as Crazy Eddie grew, Antar’s approach to business became more problematic: cash payments were not recorded, the sales tax was pocketed and employees received off-the-books pay rather than paychecks that clearly deducted federal and state taxes.\nAntar helped finance his cousin Sam Antar’s college education and brought him on as a chief financial officer, but Sam would later recall this was not done out of love of family.\n“The whole purpose of the business was to commit premeditated fraud,” Sam recounted in an interview with MentalFloss.com. “My family put me through college to help them commit more sophisticated fraud in the future. I was trained to be a criminal.\n\"People have a certain idea of Crazy Eddie — in reality, it was a dark criminal enterprise.”\nAntar initially kept his ill-gotten gains hidden within his home, but later began sending the money far into the world. Offshore bank accounts in Canada, Gibraltar, Israel, Liberia, Luxembourg, Panama and Switzerland were set up, and by the early 1980s, Antar and his family were skimming upwards of $4 million annually in unreported income and unpaid taxes.\nEventually, the graft became too big to easily hide. The solution, Antar theorized, was not to hide but to be in the greatest spotlight imaginable: Antar decided to take Crazy Eddie public.\nHello, Wall Street:Crazy Eddie conducted its initial public offering on Sept. 13, 1984, taking the NASDAQ symbol CRZY. The popularity of the television commercials helped bring in the initial wave of investor interest, while gourmet-level cooked books gave the phony impression of a well-run retail operation.\nTwo years after first trading at $8 a share, Crazy Eddie stock was at a split-adjusted $75 per share.\nWhy Antar believed he could continue with his shenanigans amid the added scrutiny given to public companies is a mystery, but by 1987 he found himself in lethal shoals.\nThe increased retail competition saw Crazy Eddie’s sales decline, resulting in a tumbling stock price.\nAntar announced his resignation in December 1986, but four months later he shocked shareholders by revealing he never stepped down — and while still at the helm, he sold off his shares in the company, gaining about $30 million in the transaction.\nThe company had begun planning to go private when an outside investor group successfully agitated to take over what they believed to be a struggling but respectable company. But when their auditors came in, they were flabbergasted to find grossly exaggerated inventories of up to $28 million, $20 million in phony debit memos to vendors and sales reports that were closer to fiction than accountancy.\nThe chain went bankrupt in 1989 and was forced to shut down its retail network. Federal and state investigations overwhelmed what remained of the Crazy Eddie and Antar was hit with an endless flurry of lawsuits.\n\"By any measure, this is a staggering securities fraud,\" saidMichael Chertoff, the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, who accused the Antars of creating \"a giant bubble\" rather than a successful business.\nBy 1990, Antar disappeared after failing to appear at a court hearing. He obtained a phony U.S. passport issued to “Harry Page Shalom” and left the country. After a two-year global search, he was located in 1992 in a Tel Aviv suburb living under the name Alexander Stewart.\nAntar was brought back to the U.S. to find his cousin Sam Antar had taken a plea deal with federal prosecutors and agreed to testify against him in court.\n“There’s no better motivator than a 20-year prison term,” Sam Antar stated. “I didn’t cooperate because I found God. I cooperated to save my ass.”\nIn July 2013, Antar was found guilty of 17 counts of fraud and sentenced to 12½ years in prison. Two years later, his verdicts were overturned on appeal.\nRather than face the stress of another trial, Antar pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges in May 1996 and was sentenced in 1997 to eight years in prison.\nThe Legend Lives On:Antar was released after four years in prison and federal law enforcement officials managed to find more than $120 million from his offshore bank accounts, which was repaid to investors.\nSeveral attempts occurred over the subsequent years to revive the Crazy Eddie brand, first as a brick-and-mortar retailer and then as an e-commerce venture, but all of these efforts failed.\nIn June 2019,Jon Turteltaub, the director of the “National Treasure” film franchise, announced plans to make a biopic about Antar. But that project has yet to come to life.\nMany of the Crazy Eddie commercials can be found on YouTube, and marketing experts consider them to be among the most imaginative and successful examples of television advertising.\nAntar stayed out of the public light after leaving prison and died of complications from liver cancer on Sept. 10, 2016. He never publicly spoke about his past, although in a brief late-life exchange with a Newark Star-Ledger reporter he acknowledged the unique impact he had on retailing.\n“Everybody knows Crazy Eddie,” he said. “What can I tell you? I changed the business. seconds away from landing at a regional airport in Illinois last March when the pilots realized they'd made a potentially fatal mistake: They were aimed at the wrong runway.</p>\n<p>Had the plane not diverted at the last second, there was a \"high probability\" the plane would not have had room to stop, an inspector later concluded, which would have been a \"potentially catastrophic situation.\"</p>\n<p>This close call is one of multiple instances of alleged pilot error included in a Federal Aviation Administration warning to Envoy Air, the largest regional carrier for American Airlines.</p>\n<p>An FAA document detailing the agency's findings dated from January and obtained exclusively by CNN describes \"consistent evidence showing potential lack of airmanship,\" unsafe and poor piloting by multiple Envoy Air flight crews over the past two years. The incidents raise concerns, some experts say, that some regional services -- generally contracted operators or sister companies to the big airlines -- are still not operating at the same safety level of mainline carriers.</p>\n<p>FAA Administrator Steve Dickson told CNN in an interview that the probe is \"based on data that we have been able to glean by working with the operator to identify where there might be areas of emerging risk that they need to focus on.\" He said the goal is to ensure Envoy Air is \"not only compliant but operating safely.\"</p>\n<p>Envoy Air is not a household name, but it is owned by American Airlines and its planes connect smaller cities nationwide with American's hubs like Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago, and Miami. It flies 185 American Eagle-branded aircraft on 1,000 daily flights to over 150 destinations in the United States, Canada and Mexico.</p>\n<p>Unseasoned fliers may not even notice that a flight is operated by Envoy Air and not an American crew. Besides checking the itinerary for a regional name such as American Eagle, passengers can look for a smaller plane -- generally 100 seats or less -- or tighter seating configurations, like only one or two seats on either side of the aisle.</p>\n<p>The company told CNN it has been working with the FAA and pilot union \"to transparently and collaboratively examine the root cause of each potential issue and take any necessary corrective actions if needed.\"</p>\n<p>\"Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and employees,\" Envoy spokeswoman Minnette Vélez-Conty said in a statement. \"If issues are raised -- either internally by our team or by the FAA -- we work to address them immediately.\"</p>\n<p>The document is a letter from an FAA inspector to Envoy Air CEO Pedro Fábregas detailing nine concerning incidents in 2019 and 2020.</p>\n<p>The FAA wrote it will work with the airline to develop an \"action plan\" to resolve the \"unsafe operational trends.\"</p>\n<p>The FAA declined to provide further information or share the plan citing the \"pending investigation,\" and the airline did not provide any records to document that it had resolved the concerns.</p>\n<p>Dickson did not specify whether the FAA is also probing other regional carriers. But he said that one of the agency's teams has \"identified a number of safety elements for airlines and other aviation safety stakeholders to examine,\" including the qualification standards for pilots and whether skills degraded during pandemic-related downtime.</p>\n<p><b>'We're sliding'</b></p>\n<p>A passenger on at least one of the flights captured the incident on camera.</p>\n<p>It was a November 2019 Envoy Air flight landing at the Chicago O'Hare International Airport, and the plane&nbsp;slid on the snowy runway. One passenger later told reporters in the airport that it was the plane's second attempt at a landing.</p>\n<p>\"We're sliding, we're sliding,\" someone in the cabin is heard saying as the plane veers to the side. \"No, no, no,\" another person calls out.</p>\n<p>The FAA concluded that air traffic controllers had not provided updated weather information,, and it ultimately announced a $1.6 million fine against the Chicago Department of Aviation for \"failing to ensure safe airline operations during snowy and wet runway conditions\" that day.</p>\n<p>But it also found that other flight crews had realized the poor conditions and aborted their plans to land.</p>\n<p>\"Perhaps more experience for this crew would have prevented this incident,\" the FAA inspector wrote.</p>\n<p>Last June, an Envoy Air crew attempting to leave Dallas Fort Worth were stopped by a warning from the plane's computer. When it alerted them of an incorrect setting, they realized they had not actually completed the mandatory checklist to prepare for takeoff, according to the documents CNN obtained.</p>\n<p>\"Not doing your preflight checklist for takeoff is a potentially fatal mistake that cannot be overlooked,\" said Peter Goelz, a former managing director at the National Transportation Safety Board and a CNN aviation analyst.</p>\n<p><b>Lingering safety questions</b></p>\n<p>The FAA raised concerns with systematic issues, rather than identifying the problems as solely the fault of particular crewmembers.</p>\n<p>\"These events are representative of the more serious operational events that evidence poor airmanship trends, among other issues,\" the FAA wrote to Envoy Air. \"Collectively, these narratives point to issues that are deeper than what spot training or counseling have been able to resolve.\"</p>\n<p>The document described one unnamed pilot who challenged the results of a failed a flight proficiency test as someone who \"truly lacked knowledge concerning what is acceptable.\"</p>\n<p>The airline said several of the incidents identified in the FAA letter were identified by its safety program, which includes weekly meetings between Envoy and the FAA.</p>\n<p>\"We regularly share this data with the FAA to enhance the overall safety of our airline and the industry, and will continue to do so,\" the airline said.</p>\n<p>The documents come more than a decade after sweeping reforms were put in place to tighten piloting qualifications and training at airlines.</p>\n<p>The 2009 crash of Colgan Air flight 3407, which killed 50 people, led the FAA to change regulations including increasing the amount of experience required to fly for an airline. There has not been a fatal airline crash in the US since.</p>\n<p>\"The FAA is cracking down on Envoy, but you wonder if the other regionals are facing similar problems,\" said Goelz, the former NTSB official.</p>\n<p>A series of incidents led the FAA in the mid-1990s to re-write its rules and start holding regional and mainline carriers to the same safety standards. The standards, for example, now require the same minimum number of flight hours to work for both a regional and mainline airline.</p>\n<p>\"These documents show there's a still a long way to go and that the FAA needs to double down on the oversight of regional carriers, particularly during times of financial stress,\" Goelz said.</p>\n<p>The Air Line Pilots Association, representing nearly 60,000 members at 35 carriers, said safety practices in the industry have \"proven an effective safeguard to detect any circumstances that could affect safety.\"</p>\n<p>\"The airline piloting profession in North America is one of the most highly scrutinized careers, and airline pilots' professionalism has contributed to making air transportation the safest form of transport for passengers and air cargo shippers,\" the group said in a statement.</p>\n<p>Regional carriers including Envoy Air play a critical role in the US aviation industry, serving both to connect smaller airports with larger cities and hubs, and as a launching pad for young pilots to start their airline careers.</p>\n<p>The pay is lower than at the mainline carriers, and competition between the regionals for contracts with the mainline carriers is fierce.</p>\n<p>Four regional carriers&nbsp;closed&nbsp;during the pandemic -- including ExpressJet, which in early 2020 announced it would expand its fleet to serve United Airlines. Within a few months, United needed fewer regional seats and rival CommutAir&nbsp;won&nbsp;the bidding war.</p>\n<p>Regional carriers operate about 40% of scheduled passenger flights, according to the Regional Airline Association. The group says about 6-in-10 US airports are served only by regional carriers, rather than mainline service.</p>\n<p>Pilot skills and safety are coming into the spotlight again. Carriers are calling back crews who were sidelined during the pandemic -- and some admit&nbsp;not flying in weeks or months. After a hiatus from the cockpit last year, one pilot highlighted the issue in a government report: \"We definitely need to be more aware of how much our proficiency decreases as we are flying less.\"</p>\n<p>Dickson acknowledged the data-driven safety approach to aviation has been partly thrown off by the pandemic, including parked planes and sidelined crews.</p>\n<p>\"Covid has introduced a whole new set of risks,\" he said. \"We need to be a little bit circumspect and understand that there's been a lot of turnover. ... The incidents raise concerns, some experts say, that some regional services -- generally contracted operators or sister companies to the big airlines -- are still not operating at the same safety level of mainline carriers.\nFAA Administrator Steve Dickson told CNN in an interview that the probe is \"based on data that we have been able to glean by working with the operator to identify where there might be areas of emerging risk that they need to focus on.\" He said the goal is to ensure Envoy Air is \"not only compliant but operating safely.\"\nEnvoy Air is not a household name, but it is owned by American Airlines and its planes connect smaller cities nationwide with American's hubs like Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago, and Miami. It flies 185 American Eagle-branded aircraft on 1,000 daily flights to over 150 destinations in the United States, Canada and Mexico.\nUnseasoned fliers may not even notice that a flight is operated by Envoy Air and not an American crew. Besides checking the itinerary for a regional name such as American Eagle, passengers can look for a smaller plane -- generally 100 seats or less -- or tighter seating configurations, like only one or two seats on either side of the aisle.\nThe company told CNN it has been working with the FAA and pilot union \"to transparently and collaboratively examine the root cause of each potential issue and take any necessary corrective actions if needed.\"\n\"Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and employees,\" Envoy spokeswoman Minnette Vélez-Conty said in a statement. \"If issues are raised -- either internally by our team or by the FAA -- we work to address them immediately.\"\nThe document is a letter from an FAA inspector to Envoy Air CEO Pedro Fábregas detailing nine concerning incidents in 2019 and 2020.\nThe FAA wrote it will work with the airline to develop an \"action plan\" to resolve the \"unsafe operational trends.\"\nThe FAA declined to provide further information or share the plan citing the \"pending investigation,\" and the airline did not provide any records to document that it had resolved the concerns.\nDickson did not specify whether the FAA is also probing other regional carriers. But he said that one of the agency's teams has \"identified a number of safety elements for airlines and other aviation safety stakeholders to examine,\" including the qualification standards for pilots and whether skills degraded during pandemic-related downtime.\n'We're sliding'\nA passenger on at least one of the flights captured the incident on camera.\nIt was a November 2019 Envoy Air flight landing at the Chicago O'Hare International Airport, and the plane slid on the snowy runway. One passenger later told reporters in the airport that it was the plane's second attempt at a landing.\n\"We're sliding, we're sliding,\" someone in the cabin is heard saying as the plane veers to the side. \"No, no, no,\" another person calls out.\nThe FAA concluded that air traffic controllers had not provided updated weather information,, and it ultimately announced a $1.6 million fine against the Chicago Department of Aviation for \"failing to ensure safe airline operations during snowy and wet runway conditions\" that day.\nBut it also found that other flight crews had realized the poor conditions and aborted their plans to land.\n\"Perhaps more experience for this crew would have prevented this incident,\" the FAA inspector wrote.\nLast June, an Envoy Air crew attempting to leave Dallas Fort Worth were stopped by a warning from the plane's computer. When it alerted them of an incorrect setting, they realized they had not actually completed the mandatory checklist to prepare for takeoff, according to the documents CNN obtained.\n\"Not doing your preflight checklist for takeoff is a potentially fatal mistake that cannot be overlooked,\" said Peter Goelz, a former managing director at the National Transportation Safety Board and a CNN aviation analyst.\nLingering safety questions\nThe FAA raised concerns with systematic issues, rather than identifying the problems as solely the fault of particular crewmembers.\n\"These events are representative of the more serious operational events that evidence poor airmanship trends, among other issues,\" the FAA wrote to Envoy Air. \"Collectively, these narratives point to issues that are deeper than what spot training or counseling have been able to resolve.\"\nThe document described one unnamed pilot who challenged the results of a failed a flight proficiency test as someone who \"truly lacked knowledge concerning what is acceptable.\"\nThe airline said several of the incidents identified in the FAA letter were identified by its safety program, which includes weekly meetings between Envoy and the FAA.\n\"We regularly share this data with the FAA to enhance the overall safety of our airline and the industry, and will continue to do so,\" the airline said.\nThe documents come more than a decade after sweeping reforms were put in place to tighten piloting qualifications and training at airlines.\nThe 2009 crash of Colgan Air flight 3407, which killed 50 people, led the FAA to change regulations including increasing the amount of experience required to fly for an airline. There has not been a fatal airline crash in the US since.\n\"The FAA is cracking down on Envoy, but you wonder if the other regionals are facing similar problems,\" said Goelz, the former NTSB official.\nA series of incidents led the FAA in the mid-1990s to re-write its rules and start holding regional and mainline carriers to the same safety standards. The standards, for example, now require the same minimum number of flight hours to work for both a regional and mainline airline.\n\"These documents show there's a still a long way to go and that the FAA needs to double down on the oversight of regional carriers, particularly during times of financial stress,\" Goelz said.\nThe Air Line Pilots Association, representing nearly 60,000 members at 35 carriers, said safety practices in the industry have \"proven an effective safeguard to detect any circumstances that could affect safety.\"\n\"The airline piloting profession in North America is one of the most highly scrutinized careers, and airline pilots' professionalism has contributed to making air transportation the safest form of transport for passengers and air cargo shippers,\" the group said in a statement.\nRegional carriers including Envoy Air play a critical role in the US aviation industry, serving both to connect smaller airports with larger cities and hubs, and as a launching pad for young pilots to start their airline careers.\nThe pay is lower than at the mainline carriers, and competition between the regionals for contracts with the mainline carriers is fierce.\nFour regional carriers closed during the pandemic -- including ExpressJet, which in early 2020 announced it would expand its fleet to serve United Airlines. Here are some highlights of our key products and business lines for the quarter:</p><p><b>Weixin </b></p><p>Weixin Video Accounts continued to gain user and content creator traction as we build the content ecosystem. We have increased our efforts in attracting and incubating content creators by providing customised onboarding services and ongoing operational support. Mini Programs’ ecosystem is thriving with deeper penetration among small and medium-sized businesses. Our low-code development platform enables smaller businesses to develop Mini Programs more cost-effectively. We provided more tools to assist system integrators and the number of active Mini Programs they served more than tripled year-on-year.</p><p><b>QQ and Digital Content </b></p><p>We are leveraging technology to better integrate social and content consumption experiences at QQ, such as seamless experiences between instant messaging and games. Users can team up with QQ friends to start a multi-player game battle with one click. For in-game friends who are not on QQ, users can communicate with them synchronously via Game Center. They can also stay up-to-date with game events via QQ Mini Programs. Looking forward, QQ’s new leadership team will seek to upgrade the service’s technology, operations and content, and better serve the social and entertainment needs of young users.</p><p>Our fee-based VAS subscriptions grew 14% year-on-year to 226 million. Video subscriptions increased 12% year-on-year to 125 million, benefitting from adaptation of certain IPs, such as The Land of Warriors, into animated and live action drama series. Our self-commissioned variety shows such as Chuang 2021 and Roast Season 5 attained popularity. Music subscriptions increased 43% year-on-year to 61 million, primarily driven by better content, effective marketing campaigns and an improved retention rate.</p><p>We are merging the Tencent Video and WeiShi teams to upgrade their algorithmic recommendations, bring integrated viewing experiences to users, and enrich short video clips adapted from our long form video library. We have announced leadership changes in TME, aiming to enhance the co-operation and synergies between our digital content services, as well as with our social communities.</p><p><b>Games </b></p><p>Our aggregate user engagement and user spending increased year-on-year despite the high base due to stay-at-home impact in the first quarter of 2020. We released Honour of Kings’ biggest-ever update in January to improve its graphics and game experiences, and then launched appealing marketing campaigns with top-tier skins during the Chinese New Year, which drove the game’s DAU and paying users to record highs in February. We reduced the application file size of PUBG Mobile and enhanced our local market operational capabilities, boosting PUBG Mobile’s DAU in EMEA countries. League of Legends benefitted significantly from the release of bigger and better Lunar Revel content across PC and mobile devices, as well as across its core game mode and Teamfight Tactics.</p><p>We are also cultivating emerging genres beyond these large audience games. For example, our new titles Komori Life and The Walnut Diary ranked among China’s top ten life simulation mobile games by DAU in April 2021. Our games pipeline covers a wide spectrum of genres, including Action, MOBA and Survival. For China, many of the new games are adapted from popular existing game and literature IPs. Internationally, we expect our substantial prior investments in best-in-class PC, console and mobile studios to begin contributing a range of genre-innovating games in the quarters to come.</p><p><b>Online Advertising </b></p><p>We enhanced the transaction capabilities of our advertising properties via linkage with Weixin Mini Programs and upgraded marketing solutions for key industries including games, retail and automobile-related verticals, delivering higher sales conversion and ROIs for advertisers. Advertisers’ adoption of Mini Programs as landing pages increased substantially, demonstrating growing recognition of Weixin as a transaction-generating environment. Our mobile advertising network continued to benefit from increased video advertising inventories primarily within games, online reading and tool apps. For the rest of 2021, industry uncertainties include potential regulatory headwinds for K-12 education and potential delays to the release schedule of our video content.</p><p><b>FinTech </b></p><p>Our commercial payments volume benefitted from rising adoption of mobile payment in China due to consumption growth and an expanding digital economy. As people travelled less and consumed more during the Chinese New Year holiday, offline payment transactions increased sequentially, particularly in retail and dining services.</p><p>Weixin Pay has been assisting small and medium-sized merchants in China to grow and digitalise their businesses. We are committing significant subsidies, resources and services to small and medium-sized merchants, to further reduce their operating costs and enhance their operational efficiency.</p><p><b>Cloud and Other Business Services </b></p><p>Leveraging our strengths in security, communication and CRM solutions, we expanded our PaaS and SaaS businesses during the quarter. To better position ourselves for the opportunities in China’s nascent SaaS market, we have established our SaaS ecosystem program to nurture the growth of SaaS providers and facilitate digitalisation of enterprise clients. We launched our Enterprise App Connector with unified login accounts and data flow across different SaaS products, allowing SaaS providers to develop and deliver their products more efficiently, while facilitating better coordination of multiple SaaS solutions by enterprise clients</p><p><b>Investments for the Future</b></p><p>We believe that we are still in the early stage of the global digital transformation. The advance of technology will present ample opportunities for our Consumer Internet and Industrial Internet activities. Consequently, we are proactively increasing our rate of investment in new opportunities by investing a portion of our incremental profits for 2021, which we believe will deliver high returns in the long run. Incremental investments will include the following areas – business services, games and short-form video content. </p><ul><li>Business Services: We will make further investments in areas such as headcount and infrastructure to support the rapid growth of our business. We will strengthen our productivity SaaS products and security software as well as partnerships with and investments in SaaS providers and Independent Software Vendors, supporting our clients’ digital needs. We are also investing further in new types of games serving more targeted audiences, building up IP franchises and developing them across media, and investing in advanced technologies for next generation game experiences such as cloud games. </li></ul><ul><li>Short-Form Video Content: We are now incubating the content ecosystem for Video Accounts which connect users with real-life content and bridge high-quality content creators with their customers. Compared to fiscal 2020, current year EPS growth estimates have been increasing progressively this year: 59% year-over-year today vs. 36% three months ago.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Some might choose to look a bit further out in the future – say, five years from now. Even so, growth rates have been trending in the right direction: currently at 13.4% annualized through fiscal 2025 vs. around 11% as of the beginning of 2021.</p>\n<p>Should earnings growth expectations continue to rise, this could be yet another indication that Apple stock might be worth owning at current prices, as the business fundamentals continue to improve.</p>\n<p><b>Will shares trend again?</b></p>\n<p>The third and final metric that might be worth monitoring are the stock’s moving averages. These are indicators that technical analysts (also known as chart readers) like to track to determine things like support, breakout patterns, etc.</p>\n<p>At a high level, the following interpretations of moving averages tend to be consensus among analysts:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>A stock that breaks through the averages on the way up is usually believed to be trending in a bullish manner. The opposite is true when share price moves below the averages.</li>\n <li>A stock that moves lower but not past the moving averages is believed to have found support.</li>\n <li>A stock that cannot move above the moving averages is believed to have met resistance.</li>\n</ul>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9bef78b042977e4d00cb4b406e9cb8bc\" tg-width=\"630\" tg-height=\"377\"><span>Figure 3: AAPL stock vs. 50-day and 200-day MA.</span></p>\n<p>A couple of interesting observations can be made from the chart above. First, the 50-trading day moving average served as a great buy and sell “advisor” between May 2019 and this time last year. During this period, AAPL clearly moved in trending patterns.</p>\n<p>Investors would have done well if they had paid close attention to the orange line above and:</p>\n<ol>\n <li>held Apple stock through February 2020;</li>\n <li>sold it once the share price dipped below the 50-day average, that same month;</li>\n <li>bought back once the stock breached the average on the way up, in April 2020;</li>\n <li>held again until September 2020.</li>\n</ol>\n<p>But after the third quarter of 2020, Apple stock seems to have traded sideways and choppily, except for a brief bullish period between November and January. Now, shares trade very much at the conversion point between the 50-day and the 200-day moving averages. Will the stock break out in either direction, finally catching another wave higher (or lower)?</p>\n<p>Also pay attention to the grey line above. Notice that Apple stock price has bounced off the 200-day moving average consistently over the past two years. This was Apple’s fifth day of losses in the past seven trading sessions, as share price remainsstuck at late August 2020 levels.\nFrom here, investors must be asking themselves: is this a good time to buy Apple stock? The Apple Maven believes that three key metrics may help aspiring shareholders make the best decision.\nFigure 1: AAPL performance on May 18 session.\nKeep an eye on valuation\nForward price-to-earnings, or P/E, is a popular and helpful valuation metric to track.\nThe ratio compares the stock’s current price to the company’s expected current-year or next-year earnings per share, or EPS. The lower the figure, the cheaper the stock, and the more appealing of a buy it is.\nApple’s projected current-year EPS is $5.20, suggesting a forward P/E of exactly 24 times at the current stock price of nearly $125. The items range from basic oat milk, to even ice cream and yogurt made from oat milk. According to its website, Oatly’s goal is “to make it easy for people to turn what they eat and drink into personal moments of healthy joy without recklessly taxing the planet’s resources in the process.”</p><p>Oatly confidentially filed for its IPO back in February, then officiallyset terms of the move last week. According to multiple outlets, Oatly will offer about 84.4 million American depositary shares (ADS) at between $15 and $17 per share. In total, the Oatly IPO could reach a $10.1 billion valuation, and the firm hopes to raise $1.1 billion.</p><p>Additionally, Oatly plans to trade on the Nasdaq exchange under the ticker “OTLY” and had nine lead underwriters for its IPO.</p><p><b>The majority shareholder</b></p><p>Oatly was founded in 1994 by Rickard Oste, a professor of food chemistry and nutrition in Sweden, and his brother Bjorn Oste. Working in Malmo, Sweden, they developed a way of processing a slurry of oats and water with enzymes to produce natural sweetness and a milk-like taste and consistency.</p><p>Oatly’s image benefited from a roster of celebrity investors, including Oprah Winfrey, Natalie Portman, Jay-Z’s Roc Nation company, and Howard Schultz, the former chief executive of Starbucks. All have some connection to the plant-based or healthy living movement.</p><p>The majority shareholder is a partnership between an entity owned by the Chinese government and Verlinvest, a Belgian firm that invests some of the wealth of the families that control the Anheuser-Busch InBev beer empire. Blackstone, the giant private equity firm, owns a little less than 8 percent in Oatly.</p><p>The company’s growth went into overdrive after Verlinvest bought a majority stake in 2016 via a joint venture with China Resources, a state-owned conglomerate with vast holdings in cement, power generation, coal mining, beer, retailing and many other industries. The new financing helped Oatly to expand in Europe and begin exporting to the United States and China, where many people cannot tolerate cow’s milk. China Resources’ involvement undoubtedly helped open doors in the Chinese market. Asia, primarily China, accounted for 18 percent of sales in the first quarter of 2021, and is growing at a rate of 450 percent a year, according to Oatly.</p><p>In Europe, there is growing alarm about Chinese investment in strategic industries like autos, batteries and robotics. The European Commission has begun erecting regulatory barriers to companies with financial links to the Chinese government. But so far no one has expressed fear that China will dominate the world’s supply of oat milk.</p><p>Just in case, Oatly’s prospectus gives it the option of listing in Hong Kong if the foreign ownership becomes a problem in the United States.</p><p><b>The Key Markets</b></p><p>Oat milk is part of a larger trend toward food that mimics animal products. So-called food tech companies like Beyond Meat have raised a little more than $18 billion in venture funding, according to PitchBook, which tracks the industry. Plant-based dairy, which in the United States includes brands like Ripple (made from peas) and Mooala (bananas), raised $640 million last year, more than double the amount raised a year earlier.</p><p>According to the Plant Based Foods Association and Good Foods Institute, plant-based-food sales reached $7 billion in 2020.</p><p>Consumer Insights data quoted in the prospectus says the plant-based milk category will grow 20% to 25% over the next three years.</p><p>Oatly is focused on its role in helping to transform the food industry in order to be better for the environment and meet the health needs of its customers. The company points out that substituting a cup of Oatly for a cup of cow’s milk reduces greenhouse gas emissions, land use and energy consumption.</p><p>Tastewise, which provides food and beverage data and intelligence, said in a December 2020 report that “plant-based everything” will be one of the top 10 U.S. trends for this year.</p><p>Oatly’s key markets are Sweden, Germany and the U.K., though its products were available in 60,000 retail stores and 32,200 coffee shops around the world as of December 31, 2020. Among the places where customers can find Oatly is Starbucks, where demand was so high there was a shortage soon after the coffee chain introduced beverages made with the item.</p><p>Oatly arrived in the U.S. in 2017. The company says it “focused on targeting coffee’s tastemakers, professional baristas at independent coffee shops” as a way to enter the market.”</p><p>By December 31, 2020, Oatly was in more than 7,500 retail shops and 10,000 coffee shops in the U.S. Revenue in 2020 totaled $100 million in the U.S.</p><p>Oatly can also be found in 11,000 coffee and tea shops in China, and at more than 6,000 retail and specialty shops across the country, including thousands of Starbucks locations.</p><p><b>Loss of Warning</b></p><p>In 2020, Oatly had revenue of $421.4 million, up from $204.0 million the year before. However, the company reported a loss of $60.4 million “reflecting our continued investment in production, brand awareness, new markets and product development,” the prospectus said.</p><p>Oatly is classified as an “emerging growth company,” which means it does not have to make the same disclosures required of bigger public companies. A business remains an emerging growth company until it reaches a number of milestones, including annual revenue of more than $1.07 billion.</p><p>Oatly warns that it has reported losses over the last “several” years and expects operating and capital expenses to rise “substantially.”</p><p>“Our expansion efforts may take longer or prove more expensive than we anticipate, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we may not succeed in increasing our revenue and margins sufficiently to offset the anticipated higher expenses,” the company said in its prospectus.</p><p>“We incur significant expenses in researching and developing our innovative products, building out our production and manufacturing facilities, obtaining and storing ingredients and other products and marketing the products we offer.”</p><p><b>The dairy market is highly competitive</b></p><p>Oatly acknowledged in its offering documents that it faces fierce competition, including from “multinational corporations with substantially greater resources and operations than us.”</p><p>That would include British consumer goods maker Unilever, which said last year that it aims to generate revenue of one billion euros, or $1.2 billion, by 2027 from plant-based substitutes for meat and dairy, for example Hellmann’s vegan mayonnaise or Ben &amp; Jerry’s dairy-free ice cream. Unilever has not announced plans for a milk substitute.</p><p>Some industry analysts argue that Oatly’s size gives it an edge over these giants, allowing it to be more innovative than a corporate behemoth. Food start-ups are “younger and faster,” said Patrick Müller-Sarmiento, head of the consumer goods and retail practice at Roland Berger, a German consulting firm.</p><p>The established food giants also have a tougher time than newcomers convincing consumers that they are sincere about saving the planet, an important part of the oat milk sales pitch.</p><p>Mr. Müller-Sarmiento, the former chief executive of Real, a German chain of big box stores, said meat and dairy alternatives are not having trouble competing with Big Food for precious retail shelf space. “Retailers are urgently looking for new products,” he said.</p><p>Time was when Nestlé or Unilever would have simply acquired Oatly, just as they have gobbled up hundreds of other brands. But they would have trouble justifying the audacious $10 billion price that Oatly has set as the benchmark for its stock offering.</p><p>Nestlé’s answer was to develop its own milk substitute, Wunda, which the company unveiled this month and plans to sell initially in France, Portugal and the Netherlands. Made from a variety of yellow peas, Wunda is higher in protein than oat milk. Some nutritionists have said that oat milk and other dairy alternatives are a poor substitute for cow’s milk because they don’t have nearly as much protein.</p><p>Stefan Palzer, the chief technology officer at Nestlé, took issue with those who say a big company can’t move as fast as a bunch of Swedish foodies. A young team at Nestlé developed Wunda in nine months, including three months of market testing in Britain, Mr. Palzer said in an interview.</p><p>Nestlé was able to adapt existing production facilities to make Wunda, rather than building new factories like Oatly must do. The company already had plant scientists who could identify the best kind of pea and food safety experts who could navigate the regulatory approval process, Mr. Palzer said.</p><p>The Wunda developers “could have any expert they wanted to have on the project,” Mr. Palzer said. “That enabled them to move at this speed.”</p><p>Nestlé already has dairy-free versions of Nesquik drinks and Häagen-Dazs ice cream and sells coffee creamers made from a blend of oat and almond milk using the Starbucks brand. The company is in a major push to develop substitutes for almost any kind of animal product. The next frontier: fish. The European Commission has begun erecting regulatory barriers to companies with financial links to the Chinese government. They can also stay up-to-date with game events via QQ Mini Programs. We reduced the application file size of PUBG Mobile and enhanced our local market operational capabilities, boosting PUBG Mobile’s DAU in EMEA countries. League of Legends benefitted significantly from the release of bigger and better Lunar Revel content across PC and mobile devices, as well as across its core game mode and Teamfight Tactics.We are also cultivating emerging genres beyond these large audience games. For example, our new titles Komori Life and The Walnut Diary ranked among China’s top ten life simulation mobile games by DAU in April 2021.
