The ensuing weeks have brought a surprisingly weak jobs report and a stronger-than-expected consumer inflation report, for example.
\n
And unlike last month’s meeting, there wasn’t an attention-grabbing selloff in Treasuries to command officials’ attention. The steep climb in yields abated at the end of March, even as economic data showed and stronger price pressures in April. The 10-year yield has dropped to 1.64% from 1.74% on March 31.
\n
Yet the document may still provide some clues about the central bank’s views. And officials have provided more perspective on policy since the latest meeting as well. Notably, Fed Vice Chair Richard Clarida spoke at a conference on Monday and discussed some recent economic data points as well.
\n
Here’s what strategists expect out of the meeting today, and what Clarida said about the topics:
\n
“Attuned and Attentive” to “Transitory” Inflation?
\n
One popular line among Fed officials, including Fed Chair Jerome Powell, has been the assurance that this spring is expected to bring a “transitory” rise in inflation, mostly related to the reopening of the U.S. economy after the pandemic brought a sharp deceleration in activity last year.
\n
Mizuho economists Steven Ricchiuto and Alex Pelle wrote in a May 18 note that they expect “several mentions of ‘transitory’ price pressures” in the minutes. They also highlighted that many of the steepest increases in consumer prices in April were in sectors where demand had been hit most by the pandemic, such as hotels and airfares. “So far [that] validates the Fed’s thinking,” they added.
\n
Yet at Monday’s conference, Clarida seemed to be repeating a different type of assurance about inflation: That the central bank would be “attuned and attentive” to any data showing higher price pressures.
\n
“In the CPI report, [reopening] did clearly put upward pressure on prices. Now our baseline view is that most of this is likely to be transitory, but we have to be attuned and attentive to the incoming data,” he said. “[The] key element of our mandate is price stability and an important component of price stability is well-anchored inflation expectations. If we were to see upward pressure on prices or inflation that threatened to put inflation expectations higher, I have no doubt we would use our tools to address that situation.”
\n
Taper Timeline
\n
Investors will also be looking to see if the central bank provides any additional guidance on when it might start paring back its $120 billion in monthly bond purchases. Powell has said the Fed wants to make “substantial further progress” toward its goals of full employment and a long-term average of 2% inflation before it wants to pare down its purchases, but officials haven’t provided much additional guidance.
\n
Most on Wall Street expect the Fed to discuss longer-term plans to reduce, or taper, its purchases late this summer or during the fall. NatWest Markets said in a Monday note that it expects the Fed to start talking about tapering its purchases in September and actually start to reduce the pace of bond-buying next year.
\n
So any more detailed discussion in the latest meeting minutes could come as a surprise to investors and potentially matter for markets.
\n
Labor-Market Outlook
\n
One key factor that will determine the outlook for the Fed’s bond buying (and other accommodation) is the recovery in the labor market. And that remains up in the air, after the disappointing April jobs report.
\n
Still, there is a chance investors could find more context on one of their questions in the minutes: How much improvement will be enough for the Fed to start withdrawing accommodation? In other words, what does “substantial further progress” mean?
\n
Before the disappointing news on April’s labor market, most of Wall Street expected a strong month for jobs creation, another step toward the “string” of strong months of recovery that Powell had said was needed before the U.S. achieved “substantial further progress” toward the Fed’s goals. That may have prompted officials to discuss just how far along the recovery would need to go before the central bank could start stepping back.
\n
Clarida discussed the April employment report on Monday as well.
\n
“What the April employment report said to me is that the way we bring supply and demand into balance in the labor market, especially in the service sector, may take some time and may produce some upward pressure on prices as workers return to employment, so we have to be attuned and attentive to that data flow,” he said. “Per that April employment report, we have not made substantial further progress, but as the data comes in we as a committee will have to evaluate that, and ultimately make a judgment.”
\n
Ultimately, the importance of future labor-market data hints at the broader takeaway from the Fed’s meeting minutes: Coming months’ economic data may be the final arbiter of what the Fed does, and its plans to remove accommodation from markets and the economy. And the economic data has been so volatile during the reopening that the picture could change significantly by the time the Fed meets again in June.
\n
That means investors will have to hold tight for a while longer to get a sense of when the central bank plans to start stepping back.
\n
“We’re reluctant to call this an equilibrium of any sort – rather it’s much more likely to prove a temporary holding pattern as macro expectations are further refined,” wrote Ian Lyngen, strategist with BMO. “Clearly, we have more questions than answers.”
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Things to Watch for in the Fed Minutes Today
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Things to Watch for in the Fed Minutes Today\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-05-19 20:51 GMT+8 Barrons\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The Federal Reserve’s latest meeting minutes aren’t expected to make much of a splash today, but investors should still keep an eye out for a few different themes.\nThe minutes are due out at 2 p.m. ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{".IXIC":"NASDAQ Composite",".SPX":"S&P 500 Index",".DJI":"道琼斯"},"source_url":"https://www.barrons.com/articles/inflation-jobs-and-more-to-watch-for-in-todays-fed-minutes-release-51621421812?mod=hp_LEAD_3","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1103552481","content_text":"The Federal Reserve’s latest meeting minutes aren’t expected to make much of a splash today, but investors should still keep an eye out for a few different themes.\nThe minutes are due out at 2 p.m. today, and Fed watchers may face a greater challenge than usual in deciphering their significance: A lot has changed in the economy since the April 28-29 meeting. If we were to see upward pressure on prices or inflation that threatened to put inflation expectations higher, I have no doubt we would use our tools to address that situation.”\nTaper Timeline\nInvestors will also be looking to see if the central bank provides any additional guidance on when it might start paring back its $120 billion in monthly bond purchases. Powell has said the Fed wants to make “substantial further progress” toward its goals of full employment and a long-term average of 2% inflation before it wants to pare down its purchases, but officials haven’t provided much additional guidance.\nMost on Wall Street expect the Fed to discuss longer-term plans to reduce, or taper, its purchases late this summer or during the fall. NatWest Markets said in a Monday note that it expects the Fed to start talking about tapering its purchases in September and actually start to reduce the pace of bond-buying next year.\nSo any more detailed discussion in the latest meeting minutes could come as a surprise to investors and potentially matter for markets.\nLabor-Market Outlook\nOne key factor that will determine the outlook for the Fed’s bond buying (and other accommodation) is the recovery in the labor market. And that remains up in the air, after the disappointing April jobs report.\nStill, there is a chance investors could find more context on one of their questions in the minutes: How much improvement will be enough for the Fed to start withdrawing accommodation? In other words, what does “substantial further progress” mean?\nBefore the disappointing news on April’s labor market, most of Wall Street expected a strong month for jobs creation, another step toward the “string” of strong months of recovery that Powell had said was needed before the U.S. achieved “substantial further progress” toward the Fed’s goals. That may have prompted officials to discuss just how far along the recovery would need to go before the central bank could start stepping back.\nClarida discussed the April employment report on Monday as well.\n“What the April employment report said to me is that the way we bring supply and demand into balance in the labor market, especially in the service sector, may take some time and may produce some upward pressure on prices as workers return to employment, so we have to be attuned and attentive to that data flow,” he said. “Per that April employment report, we have not made substantial further progress, but as the data comes in we as a committee will have to evaluate that, and ultimately make a judgment.”\nUltimately, the importance of future labor-market data hints at the broader takeaway from the Fed’s meeting minutes: Coming months’ economic data may be the final arbiter of what the Fed does, and its plans to remove accommodation from markets and the economy. And the economic data has been so volatile during the reopening that the picture could change significantly by the time the Fed meets again in June.\nThat means investors will have to hold tight for a while longer to get a sense of when the central bank plans to start stepping back.\n“We’re reluctant to call this an equilibrium of any sort – rather it’s much more likely to prove a temporary holding pattern as macro expectations are further refined,” wrote Ian Lyngen, strategist with BMO. “Clearly, we have more questions than answers.”","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":172,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9060683068,"gmtCreate":1651138027629,"gmtModify":1676534857302,"author":{"id":"3580791049174344","authorId":"3580791049174344","name":"windz123","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3f5527e97f3d63e3fa0d4f05b7f5230c","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3580791049174344","authorIdStr":"3580791049174344"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"ok","listText":"ok","text":"ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9060683068","repostId":"1177976806","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1177976806","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1651137049,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1177976806?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-04-28 17:10","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Enphase Energy Stock: Right Place, Right Time?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1177976806","media":"TipRanks","summary":"The situation in Europe is unfolding with alarming rapidity. There are also some potential opportunities emerging. For solar microinverter maker Enphase Energy (ENPH), Europe represents a major opportunity. The company was up 8% in pre-market trading earlier today, and those gains have continued into the trading session.I’m bullish on Enphase because it’s certainly got a point about the potential in Europe. Will it be enough? That remains to be seen. What we know so far is certainly eye-opening.The last 12 months for Enphase Energy have been packed with ups and downs. In fact, it’s recently off a spike that kicked off earlier this month but lost quite a bit of ground as the month progressed. Its latest plans to take advantage of conditions in Europe seem to be helping, and the company’s earnings report is also contributing to gains. Enphase’s latest earnings report featured earnings of $0.77 per share, easily ahead of Zacks consensus estimates that called for $0.68 per share. Revenue also proved a beat as the company posted $441.29 million, beating the Zacks estimates by 1.63%.Wall Street’s TakeTurning to Wall Street, Enphase has a Strong Buy consensus rating. That’s based on 18 Buys and four Holds assigned in the past three months. The average Enphase Energy price target of $228.43 implies 37.6% upside potential.Analyst price targets range from a low of $158 per share to a high of $307 per share.Investor Sentiment Turning CloudyAs novel a notion as Enphase has with pursuing Europe, investor sentiment seems much less sure about the concept. Analysts are putting out a huge buy signal. However, investor sentiment seems more interested in getting out than getting in.Insider trading, for example, shows a distinct sell-off pattern. For the last year, sell transactions have led buy transactions by 35 to 23. The last three months have been a bit different, with sellers leading buyers only 12 to 11, but selling is still leading the field.Meanwhile, the picture is similar for retail investors. TipRanks data revealed that, in the last seven days, the number TipRanks portfolios holding Enphase stock is down 1.4%. For the last 30 days, it’s down 2.5%. Enphase Energy’s dividend history also doesn’t bear any close scrutiny, as it doesn’t exist. The sole exception to this is hedge funds, which seem more interested in Enphase. Hedge funds, based on the TipRanks 13-F Tracker, have increased their purchases of Enphase stock for the second quarter in a row. The increase is negligible in quantity—just an extra 6,400 shares, roughly—but it is an increase nonetheless.Taking Europe by (Solar) StormEnphase’s plan may seem opportunistic. For business, that’s the nature of the beast. The company plans to “triple down” on Europe, especially given the fragile nature of the energy infrastructure therein right now.Word out of CEO Badri Kothandaraman says that the company is looking for sequential growth of around 40% in Europe.Enphase Energy noted that homeowners increasingly want “energy independence.” Energy independence basically means homes that make their own power. That’s often preferable to relying on a distribution grid that is often far, far out of their control.Recent moves by Russia, including the demand for payment in rubles for natural gas supplies, make the picture clearer. It’s no surprise that European homes would want to generate their own power. Thus, we establish that demand is present, but how about supply? Demand is a vital component of a business equation. However, demand is worthless without supply to match it. Kothandaraman notes that supply chain issues are actually easing. That suggests that the supply chain hasn’t been as much of a problem in recent weeks. This suggests prime conditions for Enphase ahead. There’s a clear demand for the product. It can also likely supply the demand as supply chain issues are loosening on Enphase products. If Enphase can pull out those gains that it’s projecting, that’s going to mean a huge jump to the bottom line and, from there, share prices, at least in the short term. The long term, however, may be a different matter. Enphase is making pushes into new markets. Eventually, it will run out of homeowners interested in buying power supplies. There will be, of course, demand for repairs and replacement items to keep sales going. However, the nature of Enphase’s product suggests that some front-loading will take place. There’s no subscription or service component here. The purchases made won’t need supplementing for potentially years to come.Concluding ViewsThe general demand for backup power systems is on the rise. We’ve already seen as much in the U.S., where Generac (GRNC) opened a whole new production plant in October 2021 to keep up with demand.Enphase is suffering from a decline in investor sentiment. However, it’s also got solid upside potential to it. It also has the support of analysts and hedge funds. A clear goal in mind certainly doesn’t hurt either. With Enphase clearly targeting Europe amid some significant issues in energy supply, the conditions seem favorable for further gains. A simple confluence of supply and demand makes me bullish on Enphase Energy.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":141,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":199477205,"gmtCreate":1620731390907,"gmtModify":1704347463369,"author":{"id":"3580791049174344","authorId":"3580791049174344","name":"windz123","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3f5527e97f3d63e3fa0d4f05b7f5230c","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3580791049174344","authorIdStr":"3580791049174344"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"nice","listText":"nice","text":"nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/199477205","repostId":"1156133416","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1156133416","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1620729672,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1156133416?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-05-11 18:41","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Perrigo Q1 adj. It could very well be their last, as vaccine rates climb and planes fill with leisure travelers eager to go on vacation once again.
\n
But airline stocks are all still down, and many analysts say this is a buying opportunity for investors.
\n
Delta Air Lines (DAL) announced Wednesday that it was profitable in June and expects to be solidly profitable for the rest of this year. United (UAL) expects to be profitable starting this month, and is moving ahead with expansion plans with its biggest jet order in its history. Other airlines are also signaling that a return to profitability is near. All the airlines are looking to hire staff as they ramp up capacity once again.
\n
With a few exceptions, the overwhelming majority of airline stock recommendations are bullish. Of the 140 recommendations on the nation's eight largest airline stocks by airline analysts, more than half were \"buy\" or \"strong buy\" recommendations. Only 18 times did an analyst urge investors to sell. The 12-month target prices for the stock are on average better than 30% above today's stock values.
\n
The recommendations are even more bullish if you exclude the two stocks that raise the most concern among analysts, American (AAL) and Hawaiian (HA) airlines.
\n
American, the nation's largest carrier, also has the highest debt load, and as a result, the lowest credit rating. Analysts' median target price for its shares is slightly below today's level, and 10 of 21 analysts have sell recommendations, compared with only three buys.
\n
But even American's debt level isn't a major concern to Philip Baggaley, the chief credit analyst for airlines for Standard & Poor's.
\n
\"Yes, American is most heavily indebted. All eyes are now on the central bank’s statement at the end of its two-day policy meeting on Wednesday.
\n
Data showed an acceleration in producer prices last month as supply chains struggled to meet demand unleashed by the reopening of the economy. A separate report showed U.S. retail sales dropped more than expected in May.
\n
“There was a bit of a reaction to the economic data we got, which, for the most part, shows that the economy is starting to wean itself off stimulus, the recovery is slowing down a little, and inflation is continuing to grow,” said Ed Moya, senior market analyst for the Americas at OANDA.
\n
“We’re seeing some very modest weakness, and it’ll be choppy leading up to the Fed decision. Right now, the Fed is probably in a position to show they are thinking about tapering, but they’re still a long way from actually doing it.”
\n
The Fed is likely to announce in August or September a strategy for reducing its massive bond buying program, but will not start cutting monthly purchases until early next year, a Reuters poll of economists found.
\n
The benchmark S&P 500, the blue-chip Dow Jones and the tech-focused Nasdaq have risen 13%, 12.1% and 9.2% respectively so far this year, largely driven by optimism about an economic reopening.
\n
However, the S&P 500 has been broadly stuck within a range, despite recording its 29th record-high finish of 2021 on Monday, versus 33 for all of last year.
\n
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 94.42 points, or 0.27%, to 34,299.33, the S&P 500 lost 8.56 points, or 0.20%, to 4,246.59 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 101.29 points, or 0.71%, to 14,072.86.
\n
Seven of the 11 major S&P sectors slipped.
