The devaluation of the yuan currency, alongside the global weakening consumer spending, took a bite out of Alibaba&#39;s revenue this past quarter. Despite the 2Q23 earnings report, we believe Alibaba is well-positioned to grow in the e-commerce business in the long run. We believe Alibaba&#39;s customer base is more resilient than the market is giving it credit for. While 2Q23 reported a decline in the number of total buyers, we believe the company&#39;s Business-to-Business (B2B) model provides Alibaba with high-spending customers that will support sales even during market downtrends. We believe the company is trading cheaply for its position in the e-commerce market in China- with over 60% of the market share in 2021. We&#39;re more constructive on Alibaba&#39;s e-commerce business going forward and believe the stock&#39;s valuation is too attractive to ignore.</p><h2>Alibaba Cloud is the third-largest cloud provider</h2><p>Alibaba Cloud was the company&#39;s second revenue driver in its 2Q23 earnings report, growing 4% Y/Y. The decadence of the end of empire. America the Great is Finished. Finished, I tell you!</p><p>This garbage is all over FinTwit right now and in truth it&#39;s not worth reading. The market will go up or it will go down but it has nothing to do with whether Chad makes his Klarna payment or not. It has to do with the institutional dynamic of moving money around in order to generate gains whether the weather be good or whether the weather be bad. And no more so than around key dates such as quarterly options expiry and FOMC prints.</p><p><b>Let&#39;s Talk About SPY</b></p><p>OK folks, let&#39;s just take a step back and zoom out onNYSEARCA:SPY. Using absolutely standard technical analysis pattern-recognition tools (we like the Elliott Wave / Fibonacci method, but, other methods also are available) we can say that in the larger degree, SPY has been carving out a 5-wave up cycle since its 2015 lows. Like this</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ca80a46b6ff8f158873974f116b4ad7f\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"315\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>SPY Chart I(TrendSpider, Cestrian Analysis)</p><p>Wave 1 moves up from the 2015 lows to the 2019 high, adding around $158/share on the way up.</p><p>Wave 2 moves from the pre-Covid high to the crisis low, in a Yikes Cat type move as befits a Wave 2, troughs at the 0.786 retrace for a $122/share correction.</p><p>Then Wave 3, adding $283/share to peak a little above the 1.618 extension of Wave 1 (the share price movement in W1 multiplied by 1.618 and placed at the Wave 2 low), right at the end of 2021.</p><p>And along comes the will-it-ever-end Wave 4 selloff of 2022 which despite the apparent unrelented selling - just ask anyone on FinTwit, they&#39;ll tell you! - troughed in June at between the 0.5 and 0.618 retrace of that big Wave 3 high.</p><p>So now the standard Elliott Wave pattern tells us that SPY can make a new high in a final Wave 5 up, peaking sometime in 2023 most likely. A minimum target of $480 or better, enough to just peak above that Wave 3 high.</p><p>Yes, we&#39;re saying SPY can climb to never-before-conquered levels despite inflation and recession and 75bps and labor market and blah. Why? Because SPY has traded <i>so</i> well to this standard pattern for so long that we believe it more likely than not that it sees the pattern through to the end.</p><p>But don&#39;t take our word for it. Let&#39;s zoom in. As you know, if SPY has commenced its climb up from the June lows towards its final resting place in the sky, it ought to be showing wave progress in the smaller degree too.</p><p>And is it ever. Today&#39;s close was actually funny, so perfectly did the ETF kiss the 0.618 retraces of Wave 3 on the way up then the 0.786 retrace on the way down. But still bright red on the day.</p><p>Whereas ostensibly more scary stocks like Cloudflare (NET), Palantir (PLTR), DataDog (DDOG) and so on - were ...<i>up</i>? Huh?</p><p>We may be able to shed some light on this. Now, we hate to come over all FinTwit once more and be shouting about <i>manipulation</i> and so forth. Because that&#39;s just naive. In the Great Online Game of traded securities, the game is in fact that all the other players are trying to take all your money off of you. That is Rule 1. The basic rule. The constitution upon which all other rules are founded. And further, while we don&#39;t doubt that there are some bad apples in the virtual Big Apple that&#39;s rather quaintly still referred to as The Street, most times Big Money is just doing its job which is, being good at taking money off of Chad and not letting Chad take money off of it, or at least not for very long.</p><p>You see in the index ETFs there&#39;s a hugely powerful force at work - not Jerome Powell, not Redditors, but the options market. The capital sloshing around in options way exceeds the capital in equities, and as a result it&#39;s to some degree true that options are the primary security class, equities the derivatives. It&#39;s no surprise on that basis that the closing price - the place where the option probability surface collapses to a singularity - hit a key technical level in both the SPY and the QQQ with such precision. Now, if you want to go deeper into the options-are-primary, stocks-are-derivatives rabbit hole - and it&#39;s a doozy - we suggest you take a look at our friends over at SpotGamma who are expert on the topic. For us, we&#39;ll just observe that the wall of option money pushing the ETFs around is not in place at scary high-beta names such as NET or PLTR and so on. So the market reaction today may look like genuine fear, but it isn&#39;t. Because if it was widespread genuine fear, all these high beta names would be getting dumped. Founder Schultz, who returned to the CEO role on an interim basis in March this year, announced a “Reinvention” plan shortly after he took over. The plan was aimed at tackling some of the fundamental issues the company was facing.Starbucks Grows Cold: The COVID-19 pandemic that struck in 2020 constrained businesses across the board, given the lockdown restrictions in place. The repercussions were all the more serious for restaurant chains such as Starbucks.Even ahead of the pandemic, the company’s focus on the concept of a “third place” began to wane, Fastcompany said in a report. Third place is a sociological concept referring to places where people spend time between home - the first place - and work, often referred to as the second place. Take-away orders at the retail chain reportedly accounted for about 80% of the transactions in 2019 and the sales of the more portable cold beverages outstripped that of their hot counterparts.COVID, therefore, could not have come at a worse time, forcing the closure of a majority of the company’s outlets for a protracted period.At Odds With Baristas: Starbucks’ relationship with its employees also began to sour, as baristas took cudgels against the company for poor wages and benefits. For them, the recourse was to organize as unions, which would vest them with bargaining power.The drive progressed, with the baristas at a Buffalo, New York location successfully organizing as a union in 2021. Last week, a Daily News report said the New York Mayor’s office was suing the coffee retailer for unlawfully firing a barista involved in unionization efforts.As of early August, 209 Starbucks stores have voted in favor of unionizing, CNBC said, citing data from the National Labor Relations Board. In recent months, Starbucks workers held strikes in at least 17 states in opposition to the company’s anti-union stance, according to The Guardian.The company reportedly lost $375,000 in revenue due to the strikes.Starbucks did budge by announcing investments in partners, including the return of Coffee Master training and black aprons, increased pay for U.S. store partners, a new Starbucks partner app, and increased training time.Financials Underline Fundamental Woes: Starbucks’ comps declined 14% in 2020, dragged by a 22% drop in comparable transactions. This was reflected in the top line, with revenues falling 11.3%. Non-GAAP earnings per share more than halved to $1.17, as margin took a tumble. The easier comparisons helped a rebound in performance in 2021.Citing COVID lockdowns in China, one of its key markets, the company said in May it is suspending its 2022 guidance.Third-quarter results released in early August showed merely 9% revenue growth on the back of 3% comps growth. China comps plummeted 44% during the quarter. Non-GAAP EPS fell from $0.99 to $0.84.What Awaits The New CEO: Although Narasimhan comes from a consumer healthcare, nutrition, and hygiene company, he has had prior experience with beverage giant PepsiCo Inc. At PepsiCo, where he was employed between 2012 and 2019, he held various roles, including that of global chief commercial officer. He was responsible for long-term strategy & digital capabilities in that capacity.Narasimhan is also credited with helping Reckitt Benckiser navigate through a major strategic transformation and return to sustainable growth.“We expect the focus from here will be on SBUX’s Investor Day on 9/13, the next big catalyst for the stock, where SBUX will introduce its Reinvention plan and lay out new long-term targets supported by plans focused on culture, the in-store partner experience, reimage of stores (layout, equipment, channels) and customer engagement,” Credit Suisse analyst Lauren Silberman said in a note.Narasimhan will take over in earnest only in April 2023, although he is joining Starbucks as incoming CEO on Oct. 1. However, the jobs data showed that the pace of hiring in the economy is still strong, and wage growth remains elevated, despite rising slower than inflation.</p><p>The increase in unemployment was driven mainly by the number of workers not in the workforce dropping by 613,000 while the population growth increased by 172,000. This increased the civilian labor force by 786,000, with 442,000 finding work and 344,000 moving into the unemployed column. Unemployment didn&#39;t rise because people were losing jobs; unemployment increased because people were pulled into the labor force, perhaps because of solid wage growth, which increased by 5.2% year-over-year.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b84ce593ffddaaaf877449fe8aa645d2\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"192\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>BLS.GOV</p><p>More interesting is that the pace of hiring in the household survey accelerated in August and increased at its fastest rate since March 2022. Currently, estimates are for a year-over-year inflation rate of 8.3% for August, and 8.4% for September. Meanwhile, core CPI is forecast to rise by 6.25% in August and 6.6% in September. The increase in CPI for August would be slightly slower than 8.5% for July, while core CPI would be somewhat faster than the 5.9% y/y change.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f7e19e82ac100d02e922240146dd66a6\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"337\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>A rising core CPI and a strong employment report could push the Fed to raise rates by 75 bps in September. While markets are leaning towards a 75 bps rate hike in September, they aren&#39;t convinced, with current odds at just 62%.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/67b0ea44418c49e83255c4d0524d70bb\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"320\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>CME Group</p><p>On top of that September tends to be, on average over the past 30 years, the weakest month with an average decline of -0.34%. The declines have been as much as 11%, and the gains have been as much as 8.8%.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/779c427f3192a6ad21f8686b92e742f1\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"434\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p><b>S&amp;P 500 Valuation Is Rich Versus Bonds</b></p><p>Data and questions around the next Fed meeting will create a lot of volatility in an already weak time of the year. Interest rates have risen dramatically since Jackson Hole, pushing the S&amp;P 500&#39;s valuation to historically high levels relative to the 10-yr yield, with a current spread between the earnings yield and the 10-yr rate now at 2.47%. But given, that spread should be widening because that is what happens when financial conditions tighten, it tells us that stocks are overvalued currently versus bonds.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fb5d69d23d8cf6e3e3a3fc0d6ef85286\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"235\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>With a nominal 10-Yr rate hovering around 3.25%, if the spread between the S&amp;P 500 earnings yield and the 10-Yr rate moves up to 3%, it would assume an earnings yield for the S&amp;P 500 of 6.25%, or a PE Ratio of 16, which is about 9% lower than the S&amp;P&#39;s current PE of roughly 17.6. That would equate to a value on the S&amp;P 500 of approximately 3,640 and close to the June lows.</p><p><b>June Lows Are In-Play</b></p><p>The likelihood of the S&amp;P 500 retesting those June lows seems to be increasing, and today&#39;s job data isn&#39;t likely to help. The fact of the matter is that rates are rising, and the August jobs data do not suggest the Fed should slow rate hikes or change its policy path, and the CPI data isn&#39;t likely to either. This means the Fed should remain on course to raise rates to around 4% by the middle of 2023, as the Fed Funds Futures are pricing. Given that, it will be tough for an equity rally to see a sustained advance.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0df38f9295305d9279da28bfae09f5b1\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"503\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>As rates continue to price higher, not only will nominal rates climb, but so will real rates, and currently, the 5-year and 10-Yr TIP rates have climbed right back to or above their cycle highs. This means that if real rates are rising, shouldn&#39;t the earnings yield of the S&amp;P 500 be rising too? Others, such as boating, grew out of surges in wealth that the stock market rally provided. As the summer travel season heats up, Americans are making new choices in where they go, when they go, how they get there and who joins them.</p><p>\"The world is never going back to the way it was,\" said Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky on an earnings call in May. \"And that means that travel is never going back to the way it was either.\"</p><p>One major trend is travelers have become more flexible about when and where they go, especially as remote work allows people to blur when they are on and off the clock. Airbnb stock rose May 24, when the company updated booking features, including an option to search for listings without fixed dates or locations.</p><p>And consumers aren't the only ones changing their habits. While tourism-dependent destinations suffered last year, the less-packed streets also showed locals the benefits of quieter communities.</p><p>Residents and local officials in normally packed hot spots like Italy and Hawaii are considering limiting the number of tourists. Such a seismic change could make visiting these places prohibitively expensive for many people. If the mix of travelers tilts more heavily toward the wealthy, travel stocks will nudge further toward luxury.</p><h2>Leisure, Travel Industry Stocks</h2><p>Shares across the sector have rebounded from last year's pandemic lows. The stocks' recent chart action is mixed. But many travel stocks have outperformed the market the past week and could present buying opportunities for investors.</p><p>Airline stocks&nbsp;like <b>American Airlines</b>, <b>United Airlines</b> and <b>Delta Air Lines</b> surged earlier this year on the Reddit stock short squeeze. Then they sold off because business and overseas travel remained weak. Since then, they've consolidated and are approaching buy points.</p><p>Cruise stocks like <b>Carnival</b>, <b>Royal Caribbean</b> and <b>Norwegian Cruise Line</b> are showing similar patterns.</p><p>Meanwhile, shares of boat makers <b>MarineMax</b> and <b>Brunswick</b> as well as RV makers <b>Winnebago</b> and <b>Thor Industries</b> need to regroup after some failed breakouts. They are no longer in buy zones but could form new bases if earnings and sales growth remain strong.</p><p>Hotel leader <b>Marriott</b> has been less volatile and is forming a base, though earnings and sales have yet to fully recover.</p><p>Airbnb stock has had a more difficult year. It surged after going public in December but began to slump in March as competition from <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/EXPE\">Expedia</a></b> rival Vrbo rental service reduced the availability of hosts. A mixed Q1 earnings report and the end of a post-IPO lockup period also weighed on Airbnb stock, which popped up 6% Thursday on higher volume but remained 35% off its 2021 high.</p><h2><b>When Luxury Means More Privacy</b></h2><p>Luxury travel, once the purview of only the ultrarich, may have won over those who might have had the means but not the need to travel lavishly. As travelers sought to avoid crowds during the pandemic, those with the means turned to options like private jets.</p><p>Arnie Weissman, editor-in-chief of Travel Weekly, says the pandemic opened luxury travel to a wider customer base. \"Some people developed a taste for it, and it's likely to continue.\"</p><p>Kim-Marie Evans, who writes the blog \"Luxury Travel Moms\" and plans travel for high-net-worth clients, told IBD she booked a trip for a family to Anguilla.</p><p>They stayed in a four-bedroom villa at the Four Seasons. And rather than flying commercially, they used a private jet service.</p><p>Private jet bookings are at or near their pre-pandemic highs, according to Elite Traveler, citing industry tracker FlightAware's data.</p><p>In May, private jet company Wheels Up said membership jumped 58% in Q1 to nearly 10,000. And VistaJet, another leading private jet company, said membership climbed 29% from a year ago.</p><p>Private jet leasing company NetJets, which is owned by <b>Berkshire Hathaway</b>, says its flight volume dropped to as low as 10% of 2019 numbers at the start of the pandemic.</p><p>Now the company, which also offers fractional ownership of its jets, says it's operating at 85% of its 2019 volume. NetJets said in a statement that commercial airlines have reduced their schedules. Consumers also are prioritizing their health and safety, choosing the seclusion of a private jet over a packed jetliner.</p><h2><b>Vacation Shift Favors These Travel Stocks</b></h2><p>Hotel chains implemented stringent Covid-19 protocols to convince visitors their properties were clean and safe. Still, many travelers opted to rent private homes through Airbnb, where they could avoid mingling with strangers in hotel lobbies, Weismann says.</p><p>Travel trends favor Airbnb stock long term, though it currently is slumping. On May 27, analysts at RBC Capital Markets rated shares at outperform, citing secular tailwinds that have yet to be fully appreciated by the market such as its dominant customer engagement.</p><p>The pandemic also shed light on the market potential of travel stocks like Marriott, which operates home-rental service Homes &amp; Villas by Marriott International, catering to ultra premium short- and long-term stays, CFRA Research analyst Tuna Amobi says.</p><p>The Homes &amp; Villas platform, which offers professionally managed private homes, had around 2,000 units at launch less than two years ago. Today, it lists nearly 25,000 properties.</p><p>\"They're where we don't have hotels, and many of them are in more remote locations, which really was quite attractive during Covid,\" said Marriott International President Stephanie Linnartz in a recent call with investors.</p><p>Airbnb also finds that customers are visiting smaller cities, towns and rural communities — not the same 20-30 cities that were most popular pre-pandemic. People are traveling outside the peak seasons and staying longer.</p><p>\"There is a mass shift from mass travel to meaningful travel,\" CEO Chesky said.</p><h2><b>Seaworthy Travel Stocks </b></h2><p>Luxury cruising should also come back with a bang. Nearly every cruise line's around-the-world luxury voyage is fully booked two years in advance.</p><p>One cruise line, Silversea, said its 139-day around-the-world cruise sold out in a single day. The Monaco-based cruise line is owned by Royal Caribbean. The cruise costs between $74,000 and $278,000 per guest, based on double occupancy. That compares with typical fares that start at $15,000-$20,000.</p><p>But others heading out to sea want to avoid crowded ships, which have seen outbreaks of coronavirus and other infections. The National Marine Manufacturers Association says new powerboat sales surged 34% in February compared to the same time period last year.</p><p>\"Inventory levels of new boats are the leanest they've ever been, and boats are being sold as soon as they hit the marketplace as manufacturers work to fulfill the backlog of orders,\" said Vicky Yu, senior director of business intelligence for NMMA. \"While new boat sales slowed in early 2021 following record sales last year, we are still seeing elevated levels as more Americans seek out boating as a way to spend quality time with loved ones.\"</p><p>The trend has pushed up leisure and travel stocks like boat retailers MarineMax and Brunswick&nbsp;as well as sport boat maker <b>Malibu Boats</b>.</p><p>\"It's really turning out to be a great alternative for people to stay close to home and with their family and friends and enjoy the boating lifestyle,\" MarineMax CFO Michael McLamb said in a conference call after reporting earnings April 22.</p><h2><b>Travel Stocks For Being Alone Together</b></h2><p>The desire to spend more time with friends and family is also spurring RV sales. They exploded in popularity during the pandemic, and sales data this year show demand remains high.</p><p>\"The rediscovery of America will continue this summer,\" Weissman said.</p><p>The pandemic accelerated long-term trends favoring the outdoors, Winnebago CEO Michael Happe said in a March earnings call. That includes power sports, boating and RVs.</p><p>Consumer priorities have changed, he added, toward a desire to invest in experiences vs. possessions.</p><p>\"We also believe the time (spent) recently with family and friends has reinforced that they'd like to do more of that in the future,\" Happe said. \"And families and individuals will be reevaluating how they spend their leisure time going forward.\"</p><p>Airbnb pointed to another sign of this trend among leisure and travel stocks. Instead of booking studio apartments in cities, more customers are booking entire homes with more bedrooms. As a result, the number of guests per reservation has increased.</p><h2><b>Work-Life Rebalance</b></h2><p>As people pay closer attention to their well-being post-Covid, another trend to watch is high-end wellness tourism with a focus on fitness, rejuvenation and health, Weissman says. That includes yoga and spa getaways as well as packages that offer cycling and hiking activities.</p><p>Meanwhile, the work-from-home shift allowed people to rethink other aspects of their lifestyle. In particular, they can try to balance work, leisure and travel differently.</p><p>Wedbush analyst James Hardiman says \"2020 was proof of concept that people can be productive, even more productive, while working remotely.\"</p><p>Airbnb says the share of bookings longer than 28 days jumped to 24% in Q1 from 14% in 2019. The company doesn't consider this travel.</p><p>\"People are not just traveling on Airbnb,\" Chesky said. \"They're now living on Airbnb.\"</p><h2>Future Of Business Travel?</h2><p>That also has implications for business travel, which is the most lucrative segment for travel stocks like airlines.</p><p>Experts say fewer workers may fly for <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a>-day intracompany meetings. However, more crucial business will still require people to fly for in-person meetings.</p><p>When it's time to show up in person, Airbnb expects workers will travel together more often. In this article, I demonstrate why that cannot be true and present a more reasonable estimate of Nvidia&#39;s revenue due to crypto and its exposure to a potential crash in crypto mining demand.</p><h2><b>Media Reports Imply An Imminent Crash In Graphics Card Demand</b></h2><p>A couple of recent Bloomberg articles have painted a rather dire picture of the potential effect of the crypto crash on the desktop graphics card market. A June 30 article titled <i>Nvidia Game Card Prices Fall Along With Crypto Mining Demand</i> claimed:</p><blockquote>By one estimate, more than a third of the consumer graphics-card market could vanish as crypto enthusiasts abandon the technology. And the products are piling up on <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/EBAY\">eBay</a>&#39;s site and other marketplaces. Though Nvidia&#39;s suggested retail price for the cards hasn&#39;t changed, they&#39;re selling for 50% less on secondary markets than they did in recent months.</blockquote><p>Another article went even further, implying that most of the demand for graphics cards has been due to crypto:</p><blockquote>Ethereum miners have spent approximately $15 billion on graphics processing units (GPUs), according to Bitpro Consulting, and that doesn&#39;t include ancillary costs like wiring and transformers.</blockquote><p>The article doesn&#39;t define the time frame in which the $15 billion was supposedly spent. Is it for all time? The past year? I looked at the Bitpro Consulting web site for clues. The most applicable information I found was a blog piece that stated:</p><blockquote>Rough calculations based on total hashpower suggest roughly 10-15 million GPUs are mining.</blockquote><p>Probably the author was looking at a source of data that I often use, a chart of Ethereum mining pool hash rate vs. time from BitInfoCharts:</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a92df4b053d457a67bf9b40c8a4a0d29\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"421\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>BitInfoCharts</p><p><i>Source: BitInfoCharts.</i></p><p>Hash rate is a performance metric for mining graphics cards usually measured in millions of hash per second. A hash is a particular encryption method which is used to secure the block chain. Mining Ethereum involves finding the unique hash that will secure a particular block, a time and energy consuming task, even for a GPU that can create 100 MHash/s.</p><p>The rough estimate that Bitpro gives is consistent with the global mining pool hash rate at its peak, which on May 13 was 1.266 petaHash/sec or 1.266e15 Hash/sec.</p><p>Assuming an average GPU hash rate of 100e6 (100 MHash/sec) then that works out to 12.66 million GPUs in the mining pool. Assuming a lower hash rate would give a larger number.</p><p>Where the $15 billion comes from isn&#39;t mentioned in the blog piece, but if miners spent about $1000 per card, that would give the $15 billion figure. So, in a rough estimate kind of way, the numbers hold up.</p><h2><b>What&#39;s Wrong With This Picture?</b></h2><p>Up to this point, the rough estimates are fine as far as they go, but the way that they&#39;re applied to Nvidia is not. For instance, an article in WCCFtech claimed that the $15 billion estimate meant that crypto-miners, not gamers, bought most of the desktop gaming graphics cards since the start of 2021.</p><p>This ignores the fact that the $15 billion estimate is for all time, not just since the beginning of 2021. I&#39;ve also seen it represented in comments that this $15 billion all went to Nvidia. If it had, that would constitute about 75% of Nvidia&#39;s total revenue in the Gaming segment since the launch of the RTX 30 series in September-October 2020.</p><p>In this view, Nvidia&#39;s gaming segment revenue is largely dependent on crypto, and will collapse if Ethereum mining ceases. And there is every expectation that Ethereum mining <i>will</i> cease in the near future when it goes to a completely different method of securing the Ethereum block chain.</p><p>There are a couple of things wrong with this view. First, it ignores the division of the crypto mining GPU market with AMD (AMD). AMD&#39;s Radeon RX 6000 series cards were released at about the same time as the RTX 30 series and are perfectly respectable Ethereum mining cards.</p><p>It can be argued that the AMD cards don&#39;t perform as well as the RTX 30 series, but they also cost less than the RTX 30 series. Given the shortages that existed in 2021, miners probably bought any suitable GPU they could get their hands on, AMD or Nvidia.</p><p>The other big factor that is often ignored is that neither AMD nor Nvidia make the retail price on graphics cards sold by third party graphics card builders such as EVGA or Gigabyte. AMD and Nvidia just sell the raw GPU. The pricing for the graphics chips themselves has to be much lower than the retail price of the cards in order to allow the card makers a reasonable profit, especially if they&#39;re selling wholesale to retail distributors.</p><p>How things worked last year in the context of the GPU shortage isn&#39;t exactly clear. Nvidia&#39;s Founders Edition cards (for which it did get the full retail price) sold out instantaneously, and there&#39;s no indication that Nvidia made any effort to replenish them. I believe that this was because the board partners were so desperate for chips that they demanded everything Nvidia could supply.</p><p>So for all practical purposes, Nvidia and AMD were on the same level, selling chips to board partners. Did Nvidia and AMD take advantage of the shortages to charge extra for their chips?</p><p>They may have, but I doubt they could get away with much of a surcharge without the board partners throwing a fit. The board partners have a lot of clouts because they&#39;re the ones selling most of the graphics cards. If anyone (besides scalpers) was reaping a windfall profit from the shortages last year, it was probably the board partners.</p><h2><b>A Detailed Calculation Of Crypto Revenue On A Quarterly Basis</b></h2><p>There are so many moving parts to the crypto mining puzzle that even a detailed analysis has to make some simplifying assumptions. So let me state mine up front.</p><p>Ethereum: there are over 20 GPU mineable crypto currencies, but only one really matters, Ethereum. Ethereum accounted for more than 96% of all the revenue derived from GPU-based mining according to this table published in the Bitpro Consulting blog:</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c96043216c20b8afeadf01932c87c27c\" tg-width=\"601\" tg-height=\"444\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>BitPro Consulting</p><p><i>Source: Bitpro Consulting.</i></p><p>It can be assumed that an increase in the global mining pool hash rate is due to the addition of new mining graphics cards. Likewise, a decline in the global hash rate must be due to mining cards being removed from the pool.</p><p>What remains is to estimate the mix of cards being purchased by miners. Starting at the launch of the RTX 30 series, I assume that only the RTX 30 series and the RX 6000 series cards were added during the period of Nvidia&#39;s fiscal 2021 Q3 (ending 10/25/20) to Nvidia&#39;s fiscal 2023 Q1 (ending 5/1/22).</p><p>I estimate the mix of GPU models based on calculating the card hash rate divided by the list price. This just assumes that cards that offer more &#34;bang for the buck&#34; would be preferred by miners and have a higher market share. I give the approximate market share in the relative weighting factors given in the table below:</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f4005e5762d80e0ee4fd5bfd6a80bbcb\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"185\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Mark Hibben</p><p>The estimated chip price is pegged at 60% of the list price. The hash rates are somewhat algorithm dependent and are drawn from multiple sources, such as Minerstat. The Nvidia CMP 30HX was a special purpose mining GPU for which Nvidia reported income separately. Since this reporting provided the best way to estimate CMP 30HX unit sales, it isn&#39;t included in the weighting calculations.</p><p>The change in hash rate from quarter to quarter scales the total number of cards added, while the weighting factors provide a means to calculate total sales of each model. The table below summarizes the calculations of the numbers of cards added per quarter and the estimated revenue from those cards:</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ddb1be28d6751780f9216d7d27879a78\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"416\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Mark Hibben</p><p>Over the time period shown above, I estimate that about 11 million graphics cards were added to the mining pool, not counting the CMP cards, which are tallied separately. In fiscal 2022 Q2, so many CMP cards were added, that I calculated there was actually a reduction in conventional GPUs in the mining pool. Thus, no gaming GPUs are estimated to have been added for the quarter.</p><p>The contribution of crypto to the Nvidia Gaming segment revenue is estimated to have never been higher than about 26%, and averages over the period to be 14.72%.</p><p>The chart below summarizes the quarterly revenue for Nvidia and AMD due to crypto:</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/02c862eb7b477ad4d8b87f97c302c109\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"506\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Mark Hibben</p><p>One question that I can&#39;t resolve is what happened to the GPUs that were taken out of the pool due to the influx of the CMP cards in the Nvidia fiscal 2022 Q2 quarter. Were they subsequently put back into the pool or were they replaced with newer cards? For this analysis, I just assume they were replaced with newer cards.</p><h2><b>Investor Takeaways</b></h2><p>There appears to be a segment of the investor community that believes that Nvidia&#39;s enormous success with the RTX 30 series is somehow a fluke and an artifact of crypto mining demand. The above analysis shows that this is highly implausible, if not impossible.</p><p>Even in Nvidia&#39;s fiscal 2022 Q2, when we would expect crypto demand to be minimal based on hash rate growth and sales of CMP chips, Nvidia&#39;s gaming segment revenue grew by a phenomenal 85% y/y.</p><p>The crypto dependency thesis is also undermined by the Steam Hardware Survey. The top 20 of the most modern DirectX 12 GPUs by Steam usage share is dominated by Nvidia graphics cards, many of which are RTX 20 and 30 series:</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0eee902e184cf13c4ceccd9280a80b16\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"398\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Steam</p><p><i>Source: SteamPowered.</i></p><p>Even as crypto GPU demand has dropped off in fiscal 2023 Q1, Gaming segment revenue growth has continued to be strong, at 31% y/y. The removal of crypto demand hasn&#39;t gutted the market for Nvidia graphics cards. It has simply allowed gamers and other PC users to finally buy RTX 30 cards at the list price.</p><p>Future demand is certainly clouded by the impending switch of Ethereum to a different approach to processing transactions and securing the block chain. Current Ethereum miners will be left out in the cold, and the roughly 15 million mining cards will be flushed into the used market.</p><p>This switch, referred to as &#34;the merge&#34; could happen as soon as August, although this is very much in doubt. If and when it does, there will certainly be a glut in the used graphics card market, and this can be expected to depress new card sales as well.</p><p>However, these cards will not be considered very desirable. Mining graphics cards are flogged to within an inch of their lives, and sometimes beyond. Used mining cards are not a good value.</p><p>Furthermore, Nvidia is about to unleash its RTX 40 series, and these will likely be more attractive than used cards one or two generations old. Keep in mind that while 15 million mining cards seems like a lot, it&#39;s only about what Nvidia sells in a couple of quarters. So, any glut that occurs will likely only last a few quarters.</p><p>While Nvidia&#39;s Gaming segment is still very important in terms of revenue, investors should keep in mind that last quarter Data Center revenue exceeded Gaming revenue for the first time ever. Nvidia&#39;s multiple growth opportunities include high performance computing, AI, and autonomous vehicles.</p><p>Rather than fearing the end of Ethereum fueled demand, Nvidia investors should look forward to the time when things get back to &#34;normal&#34; and Nvidia can better serve its loyal gaming customers. In this article, I demonstrate why that cannot be true and present a more reasonable estimate of Nvidia's revenue due to crypto and its exposure to a potential crash in crypto mining demand.Media Reports Imply An Imminent Crash In Graphics Card DemandA couple of recent Bloomberg articles have painted a rather dire picture of the potential effect of the crypto crash on the desktop graphics card market. A June 30 article titled Nvidia Game Card Prices Fall Along With Crypto Mining Demand claimed:By one estimate, more than a third of the consumer graphics-card market could vanish as crypto enthusiasts abandon the technology. And the products are piling up on eBay's site and other marketplaces. Though Nvidia's suggested retail price for the cards hasn't changed, they're selling for 50% less on secondary markets than they did in recent months.Another article went even further, implying that most of the demand for graphics cards has been due to crypto:Ethereum miners have spent approximately $15 billion on graphics processing units (GPUs), according to Bitpro Consulting, and that doesn't include ancillary costs like wiring and transformers.The article doesn't define the time frame in which the $15 billion was supposedly spent. Is it for all time? The past year? I looked at the Bitpro Consulting web site for clues. The most applicable information I found was a blog piece that stated:Rough calculations based on total hashpower suggest roughly 10-15 million GPUs are mining.Probably the author was looking at a source of data that I often use, a chart of Ethereum mining pool hash rate vs. time from BitInfoCharts:BitInfoChartsSource: BitInfoCharts.Hash rate is a performance metric for mining graphics cards usually measured in millions of hash per second. A hash is a particular encryption method which is used to secure the block chain. Mining Ethereum involves finding the unique hash that will secure a particular block, a time and energy consuming task, even for a GPU that can create 100 MHash/s.The rough estimate that Bitpro gives is consistent with the global mining pool hash rate at its peak, which on May 13 was 1.266 petaHash/sec or 1.266e15 Hash/sec.Assuming an average GPU hash rate of 100e6 (100 MHash/sec) then that works out to 12.66 million GPUs in the mining pool. Assuming a lower hash rate would give a larger number.Where the $15 billion comes from isn't mentioned in the blog piece, but if miners spent about $1000 per card, that would give the $15 billion figure. So, in a rough estimate kind of way, the numbers hold up.What's Wrong With This Picture?Up to this point, the rough estimates are fine as far as they go, but the way that they're applied to Nvidia is not. For instance, an article in WCCFtech claimed that the $15 billion estimate meant that crypto-miners, not gamers, bought most of the desktop gaming graphics cards since the start of 2021.This ignores the fact that the $15 billion estimate is for all time, not just since the beginning of 2021. I've also seen it represented in comments that this $15 billion all went to Nvidia. If it had, that would constitute about 75% of Nvidia's total revenue in the Gaming segment since the launch of the RTX 30 series in September-October 2020.In this view, Nvidia's gaming segment revenue is largely dependent on crypto, and will collapse if Ethereum mining ceases. And there is every expectation that Ethereum mining will cease in the near future when it goes to a completely different method of securing the Ethereum block chain.There are a couple of things wrong with this view. First, it ignores the division of the crypto mining GPU market with AMD (AMD). AMD's Radeon RX 6000 series cards were released at about the same time as the RTX 30 series and are perfectly respectable Ethereum mining cards.It can be argued that the AMD cards don't perform as well as the RTX 30 series, but they also cost less than the RTX 30 series. Given the shortages that existed in 2021, miners probably bought any suitable GPU they could get their hands on, AMD or Nvidia.The other big factor that is often ignored is that neither AMD nor Nvidia make the retail price on graphics cards sold by third party graphics card builders such as EVGA or Gigabyte. AMD and Nvidia just sell the raw GPU. The pricing for the graphics chips themselves has to be much lower than the retail price of the cards in order to allow the card makers a reasonable profit, especially if they're selling wholesale to retail distributors.How things worked last year in the context of the GPU shortage isn't exactly clear. Nvidia's Founders Edition cards (for which it did get the full retail price) sold out instantaneously, and there's no indication that Nvidia made any effort to replenish them. I believe that this was because the board partners were so desperate for chips that they demanded everything Nvidia could supply.So for all practical purposes, Nvidia and AMD were on the same level, selling chips to board partners. Did Nvidia and AMD take advantage of the shortages to charge extra for their chips?They may have, but I doubt they could get away with much of a surcharge without the board partners throwing a fit. The board partners have a lot of clouts because they're the ones selling most of the graphics cards. If anyone (besides scalpers) was reaping a windfall profit from the shortages last year, it was probably the board partners.A Detailed Calculation Of Crypto Revenue On A Quarterly BasisThere are so many moving parts to the crypto mining puzzle that even a detailed analysis has to make some simplifying assumptions. So let me state mine up front.Ethereum: there are over 20 GPU mineable crypto currencies, but only one really matters, Ethereum. Ethereum accounted for more than 96% of all the revenue derived from GPU-based mining according to this table published in the Bitpro Consulting blog:BitPro ConsultingSource: Bitpro Consulting.It can be assumed that an increase in the global mining pool hash rate is due to the addition of new mining graphics cards. Likewise, a decline in the global hash rate must be due to mining cards being removed from the pool.What remains is to estimate the mix of cards being purchased by miners. Starting at the launch of the RTX 30 series, I assume that only the RTX 30 series and the RX 6000 series cards were added during the period of Nvidia's fiscal 2021 Q3 (ending 10/25/20) to Nvidia's fiscal 2023 Q1 (ending 5/1/22).I estimate the mix of GPU models based on calculating the card hash rate divided by the list price. This just assumes that cards that offer more \"bang for the buck\" would be preferred by miners and have a higher market share. I give the approximate market share in the relative weighting factors given in the table below:Mark HibbenThe estimated chip price is pegged at 60% of the list price. The hash rates are somewhat algorithm dependent and are drawn from multiple sources, such as Minerstat. The Nvidia CMP 30HX was a special purpose mining GPU for which Nvidia reported income separately. Since this reporting provided the best way to estimate CMP 30HX unit sales, it isn't included in the weighting calculations.The change in hash rate from quarter to quarter scales the total number of cards added, while the weighting factors provide a means to calculate total sales of each model. The table below summarizes the calculations of the numbers of cards added per quarter and the estimated revenue from those cards:Mark HibbenOver the time period shown above, I estimate that about 11 million graphics cards were added to the mining pool, not counting the CMP cards, which are tallied separately. In fiscal 2022 Q2, so many CMP cards were added, that I calculated there was actually a reduction in conventional GPUs in the mining pool. Thus, no gaming GPUs are estimated to have been added for the quarter.The contribution of crypto to the Nvidia Gaming segment revenue is estimated to have never been higher than about 26%, and averages over the period to be 14.72%.The chart below summarizes the quarterly revenue for Nvidia and AMD due to crypto:Mark HibbenOne question that I can't resolve is what happened to the GPUs that were taken out of the pool due to the influx of the CMP cards in the Nvidia fiscal 2022 Q2 quarter. Were they subsequently put back into the pool or were they replaced with newer cards? For this analysis, I just assume they were replaced with newer cards.Investor TakeawaysThere appears to be a segment of the investor community that believes that Nvidia's enormous success with the RTX 30 series is somehow a fluke and an artifact of crypto mining demand. The above analysis shows that this is highly implausible, if not impossible.Even in Nvidia's fiscal 2022 Q2, when we would expect crypto demand to be minimal based on hash rate growth and sales of CMP chips, Nvidia's gaming segment revenue grew by a phenomenal 85% y/y.The crypto dependency thesis is also undermined by the Steam Hardware Survey. The top 20 of the most modern DirectX 12 GPUs by Steam usage share is dominated by Nvidia graphics cards, many of which are RTX 20 and 30 series:SteamSource: SteamPowered.Even as crypto GPU demand has dropped off in fiscal 2023 Q1, Gaming segment revenue growth has continued to be strong, at 31% y/y. The removal of crypto demand hasn't gutted the market for Nvidia graphics cards. It has simply allowed gamers and other PC users to finally buy RTX 30 cards at the list price.Future demand is certainly clouded by the impending switch of Ethereum to a different approach to processing transactions and securing the block chain. Current Ethereum miners will be left out in the cold, and the roughly 15 million mining cards will be flushed into the used market.This switch, referred to as \"the merge\" could happen as soon as August, although this is very much in doubt. If and when it does, there will certainly be a glut in the used graphics card market, and this can be expected to depress new card sales as well.However, these cards will not be considered very desirable. Mining graphics cards are flogged to within an inch of their lives, and sometimes beyond. Used mining cards are not a good value.Furthermore, Nvidia is about to unleash its RTX 40 series, and these will likely be more attractive than used cards one or two generations old. Keep in mind that while 15 million mining cards seems like a lot, it's only about what Nvidia sells in a couple of quarters. So, any glut that occurs will likely only last a few quarters.While Nvidia's Gaming segment is still very important in terms of revenue, investors should keep in mind that last quarter Data Center revenue exceeded Gaming revenue for the first time ever. Nvidia's multiple growth opportunities include high performance computing, AI, and autonomous vehicles.Rather than fearing the end of Ethereum fueled demand, Nvidia investors should look forward to the time when things get back to \"normal\" and Nvidia can better serve its loyal gaming customers.
