In March, environmental activists set fire to infrastructure near that same factory, depriving Tesla of sufficient operation power and again causing a pause in production.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">In China, Tesla faced an onslaught of competition from domestic EV makers, including BYD and newcomers such as the phone maker Xiaomi. After sluggish sales numbers for its China-made cars in January and February, Tesla reduced production of its Model 3 and Model Y at its Shanghai plant and slashed workers’ schedules to 5 days a week from 6 and a half days.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">In the U.S., reviews were mixed for Tesla’s newest model — an angular pickup dubbed the Cybertruck — which the EV maker only began to sell in small numbers in December last year.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">A series of discounts and incentives appeared to be less effective in driving sales volume than in the past for Tesla.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">During the final days of the first quarter, Tesla CEO Elon Musk mandated that all sales and service staff install and demo the newest version of the company’s premium driver assistance system for customers in North America before handing over their cars. The system is marketed as Full Self-Driving but doesn’t make Tesla cars autonomous. The company had told investors it would raise prices this year as part of a continuing push to consistently turn a profit. \n</p>\n<p>\n     Spotify shares fell 12% Tuesday after the company reported steeper losses from podcasting cuts and higher music royalty costs. \n</p>\n<p>\n     The Stockholm streaming giant notched its strongest-ever quarter for new users, yet missed its revenue target and offered a weaker-than-expected outlook for the current quarter. \n</p>\n<p>\n     The audio giant said it would soon raise prices in dozens of other markets around the world, including the U.K., France, Mexico, Peru, Singapore and Hong Kong. \n</p>\n<p>\n     Asked about the company's ability to raise prices longer term, Chief Executive Daniel Ek said Spotify continues to improve its product, increase podcasting and expand its audiobooks offering. \"If we're doing that, I believe that we have the ability to then raise prices to keep the value to price ratio at an appropriate level,\" he said. \n</p>\n<p>\n     How many new subscribers did Spotify add? \n</p>\n<pre>\n   -- Overall, the streamer reported 551 million monthly active users, a 27% \n      jump from a year earlier, 21 million ahead of guidance and a record high \n      for the company. Think of Amazon ranking their own offerings higher than its competitors’ on&nbsp;amazon.com, or Alphabet displaying their devices first on a search page.</p>\n<p>The other two are tangentially related to the first two. One limits Big Tech’s ability to acquire companies that may compete with other vendors on their platforms. The last pertains to users’ rights and ability to transfer their own data to other, even if competing platforms.</p>\n<p>For now, the new legislation is still in the pipeline. Before being considered for a vote on the floor of the House, the proposal would first need to clear the Judiciary Subcommittee. Between now and then, expect lobbying efforts to be deployed to slow the process down or even halt it altogether.</p>\n<p><b>Risks to Apple</b></p>\n<p>In my opinion, all FAAMG companies stand to lose from the proposed legislation – including Microsoft, a company that&nbsp;fought&nbsp;its own antitrust war in the 1990s, but that has remained mostly away from the spotlight this time. Which tech company might suffer most is subject to debate.</p>\n<p>Apple would probably “feel the heat” mostly within its services segment. The company has already been accused of being too powerful a gatekeeper of the App Store, a popular application platform through which tens of millions of developers offer their products and services.</p>\n<p>Outside the App Store, it is unclear how Apple might be impacted by the legislation. CEO Tim Cook has made his case clear that Apple is not a monopoly in any of the businesses that it is involved in – from smartphones to personal computers and most, if not all, digital services.</p>\n<p><b>Nothing new so far</b></p>\n<p>Interestingly, and despite the news having surfaced during trading hours on June 11, Apple stock barely moved in response. AAPL shares ended the trading day up nearly&nbsp;1%, very much at the high for the day and ahead of the S&amp;P 500’s 0.2% gains.</p>\n<p>In my view, investors have brushed off the news because it is largely aligned with expectations that have been set years ago.Even before the US elections&nbsp;for President and Senators in 2020, it had become clear that the left and right parties in Congress would be united by their desire to limit Big Tech’s power.</p>\n<p>I find it unlikely that Apple stock will be swayed primarily by the antitrust efforts in Washington, D.C. – at least for now.
