So, just on the favorable winds of the greater fool theory, WISH stock has upside potential.\nThe question is, what’s the probability of said potential?\nIf you askInvestorPlacecontributor Dana Blankenhorn, the answer is apparently not much. He bluntly stated that WISH stock is “overvalued” and “possibly full of hot air,” descriptors that typically don’t materialize if one felt confident about a particular opportunity. Specifically, Blankenhorn states that relative to revenue, ContextLogic is selling at 50% more than the top line.\nIn his view, that’s not acceptable because the company is not growing on the bottom line — quite the opposite. To have that kind of a premium, a prospective buyer would need to see serious justification. So far, WISH stock hasn’t delivered; hence, my colleague’s hot air reference. Essentially, that’s what you’re buying in absence of a credible narrative.\nHowever, others take a differing view. For instance,Benzingacontributor Melanie Schaffer implied that you could gamble on ContextLogic shares on the long side of the equation, noting recently that WISH appeared to be charting “adouble bottom patterncreated on Aug. 19 and Sept. 15,” which has bullish implications.\nOf course, the backdrop didn’t quite turn out that way. As you’ve undoubtedly heard, fears have mounted that real-estate developerChina Evergrande Group(OTCMKTS:EGRNF) “might not pay its bonds this month,” perThe Wall Street Journal. That triggered a wave of selloffs in companies tied to China’s property market, includingBlackRock(NYSE:BLK).\nBut ContextLogic took a massive hit along with the rest of the market earlier this week, shedding over 7%. This raises concerns about its forward viability.\nWISH Stock Wages a Two-Front Battle\nWhile it’s possible that WISH stock could jump higher from here, I think it’s always significant when a stock betrays the implications of a well-established technical pattern. You’ll notice that technical analysts never guarantee a price move but instead talk in terms of if-then probabilities.\nIn this case, WISH stock will likely jump higherifthe double-bottom pattern holds. But if it doesn’t hold, investors need to go back to the drawing board and assess whether the core of the original thesis applies.\nThe questions from the technical element segues into the fundamental aspect. Per ContextLogic’s10-Q filed last month, “China accounted for substantially all of marketplace and logistics revenue during the three and six months ended June 30, 2021 and 2020 based on the location of the merchants’ operations.”\nBasically, ContextLogic’s success depends on a healthy and robust Chinese consumer economy. Therefore, the Evergrande news isn’t what the doctor ordered.\nThen again, how much of ContextLogic’s business is truly tied to what’s going on with China’s property market? I get that major economic news from that nation will impact its citizenry’s sentiment and spending behaviors. But at the end of the day, we’re talking about an e-commerce platform facilitating transactions between buyers and sellers. So, there should be some insulation from the Evergrande headwind.\nOn the day of the WSJ report above, Evergrande shares tanked 18.3%. So WISH stock losing 7.2% is a massive deal, meaning that it suffered 39% of the volatility of the shares that started the fallout.\nThat seems a bit harsh, which leads me to suspect that WISH stock isn’t really trading on the fundamentals but rather speculation. There’s nothing wrong with that, per se, but it does lead to circumstances like this, where stakeholders dump on fears that may be only loosely related to the target asset.\nTime To Run To the Sidelines\nFrom where I stand, I’m almost certain there will be some kind of bounce back. But unless you’re a risk-tolerant speculator, you might want to hit the sidelines.\nCertainly, a harsh impact to China will hurt ContextLogic. Those criteria could be very specific like buying&nbsp;pharmaceutical stocks&nbsp;the manager thinks are undervalued based on certain metrics, or they could be very general like simply buying every stock in the&nbsp;<b>S&amp;P 500 index</b>. There's a wide range of strategies available to mutual fund investors, and the details are laid out for investors in the prospectus.</p>\n<p><b>Types of mutual funds</b></p>\n<p>There are a few different types of mutual funds investors should be aware of.</p>\n<ul>\n <li><b>Actively managed vs. passive funds.</b>Actively managed mutual funds&nbsp;are characterized by a fund manager who attempts to beat the fund's benchmark index by strategically buying and selling securities. Passive funds, or&nbsp;index funds, merely try to replicate the returns of the benchmark index by modeling a portfolio based on the index. Sometimes, the fund will just buy every security in the index.</li>\n <li><b>Open-ended vs. closed-ended funds.</b>Open-ended funds have no limit to the number of shares they can issue. Investors simply buy shares, and the fund manager takes new inflows and allocates them to the appropriate securities. Closed-ended funds have a limited number of shares, so the portfolio manager doesn't have to deal with inflows or outflows. In order to buy or sell shares, you have to find a buyer or seller on the open market.</li>\n <li><b>Load vs. no-load funds.</b>Funds with a load pay a commission to the broker who sells the investor the fund. The commission comes out of the investor's funds either at purchase (front-loaded) or at the sale of the mutual fund (back-loaded). No-load funds do not have such a commission.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><b>Who can invest?</b></p>\n<p>Mutual funds are available to every investor. Some funds may have a minimum investment ranging from $100 to $10,000 or more. More and more funds have no minimum investment these days.</p>\n<p><b>How mutual fund fees work</b></p>\n<p>Mutual funds charge a management fee, which typically ranges between 1% and 2% of assets under management. Index funds usually have much lower fees. The Investment Company Act of 1940 also requires mutual funds to provide details of their financial health and investment policies.</p>\n<p><b>What are hedge funds?</b></p>\n<p>A&nbsp;hedge fund&nbsp;is designed as a way for individual investors to gain access to the investment ideas and strategies of fund managers they believe have an edge on the market. Hedge funds are structured as general partnerships, and investors buy into the investment company directly as limited partners instead of buying publicly offered shares.</p>\n<p><b>Investment strategies</b></p>\n<p>Hedge funds aren't limited in the strategies they can use in order to produce positive and outsized returns for their investors. Hedge funds will use derivatives such as&nbsp;options&nbsp;and&nbsp;margin&nbsp;to gain leverage, and they maysell stocks short.</p>\n<p>Hedge funds are also able to invest in just about any market:cryptocurrency, private real estate, or vintage single malt scotch. These are strategies unavailable in mutual funds due to SEC regulations. They're also much riskier strategies than simply buying publicly traded securities.</p>\n<p><b>Who can invest?</b></p>\n<p>Hedge funds are only able to accept funds from accredited investors. The SEC defines an accredited investor as someone with a liquid net worth (home equity doesn't count) of $1 million or an annual income of $200,000 (or $300,000 with a spouse). The SEC believes that level of wealth makes an investor more sophisticated and better able to withstand the volatility and uncertainty associated with hedge funds.</p>\n<p>Hedge funds often have minimum investments of $1 million or more. They typically limit investment windows, and they can have minimum holding periods. They can also restrict when investors can withdraw. As such, hedge fund investors require a good amount of liquidity outside of their investment in the hedge fund.</p>\n<p><b>How hedge fund fees work</b></p>\n<p>Hedge funds charge two types of fees: management fees and performance fees. A management fee is similar to the management fee for a mutual fund. The fund charges anexpense ratio, typically 2%, that's taken out of the assets under management every year.</p>\n<p>The performance fee, as the name implies, is based on the fund's performance, and it's usually 20% of the gains. So, if the fund increases by 10% one year, the fund takes 20% of the gains (2% of the investment), and the rest stays invested with the fund. If the fund loses money, there's no performance fee, but the investors still have to pay the management fee.</p>\n<p>The most typical fee structure — a 2% management fee and a 20% performance fee — is known as 2-and-20.</p>\n<p><b>How are hedge funds regulated?</b></p>\n<p>Hedge funds only have to register with the SEC once they reach total assets under management of above $100 million. Beyond that, they must abide by Regulation D of the Securities Act of 1933 and limit their investors to accredited investors. That allows them to remain exempt from most reporting to the SEC and makes investing in a hedge fund much more opaque than investing in a mutual fund.</p>\n<p><b>Additional considerations</b></p>\n<p>Hedge funds have shown worsening performance over the past 15 years or so even as the U.S. stock market has been on a tear. In fact, in&nbsp;bull markets, mutual funds may provide better returns than hedge funds net of fees since alternative investment strategies fail to keep up with the stock market.</p>\n<p>That said, those strategies can be invaluable in&nbsp;bear markets. If the strategies have returns truly uncorrelated with U.S. stocks, they could provide positive returns as the stock market craters. That's when a hedge fund will really live up to its name.</p>\n<p>While hedge funds hold the promise of big returns supported by advanced trading strategies, they can go for long periods without producing the expected results. For patient investors, they could pay off.</p>\n<p>But perhaps the age when hedge funds could outperform the average investor is over. Today's technology makes it easier for retail investors to invest and use their own strategies, whether they're exceedingly simple or super complex. For most investors, a mutual fund will be able to meet all of their investing needs, but they're a bit more boring than hedge funds. The SEC believes that level of wealth makes an investor more sophisticated and better able to withstand the volatility and uncertainty associated with hedge funds.\nHedge funds often have minimum investments of $1 million or more. They typically limit investment windows, and they can have minimum holding periods. They can also restrict when investors can withdraw. As such, hedge fund investors require a good amount of liquidity outside of their investment in the hedge fund.\nHow hedge fund fees work\nHedge funds charge two types of fees: management fees and performance fees. A management fee is similar to the management fee for a mutual fund. The fund charges anexpense ratio, typically 2%, that's taken out of the assets under management every year.\nThe performance fee, as the name implies, is based on the fund's performance, and it's usually 20% of the gains. So, if the fund increases by 10% one year, the fund takes 20% of the gains (2% of the investment), and the rest stays invested with the fund. If the fund loses money, there's no performance fee, but the investors still have to pay the management fee.\nThe most typical fee structure — a 2% management fee and a 20% performance fee — is known as 2-and-20.\nHow are hedge funds regulated?\nHedge funds only have to register with the SEC once they reach total assets under management of above $100 million. Beyond that, they must abide by Regulation D of the Securities Act of 1933 and limit their investors to accredited investors. That allows them to remain exempt from most reporting to the SEC and makes investing in a hedge fund much more opaque than investing in a mutual fund.\nAdditional considerations\nHedge funds have shown worsening performance over the past 15 years or so even as the U.S. stock market has been on a tear. In fact, in bull markets, mutual funds may provide better returns than hedge funds net of fees since alternative investment strategies fail to keep up with the stock market.\nThat said, those strategies can be invaluable in bear markets. If the strategies have returns truly uncorrelated with U.S. stocks, they could provide positive returns as the stock market craters. That's when a hedge fund will really live up to its name.\nWhile hedge funds hold the promise of big returns supported by advanced trading strategies, they can go for long periods without producing the expected results. For patient investors, they could pay off.\nBut perhaps the age when hedge funds could outperform the average investor is over. The Dow stood less than a percentage point from its Aug. 16 record, mid-afternoon Friday.</p>\n<p>Sifma, the securities-industry trade group for fixed-income, also has recommended the bond market close on Labor Day, including trading in the 10-year Treasury note,which was&nbsp;yielding around 1.33%&nbsp;after the U.S. August jobs report came in weaker than expected.</p>\n<p>However, the&nbsp;Labor Department’s employment report,which showed that&nbsp;235,000 jobs were created in August, far below expectations for more than 700,000, failed to dull expectations among sovereign debt investors for a near-term announcement of tapering of the Fed’s $120 billion in monthly purchases in Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities.</p>\n<p>Trading in most commodity futures, including Nymex crude-oil&nbsp;and Comex gold,on U.S. exchanges will also be halted Monday.</p>\n<p>Is there any significance to the holiday for average investors, besides the time off in the U.S. and the barbecues?</p>\n<p>Probably not.</p>\n<p>But the May Memorial Day to September Labor Day period in recent years has proven a bullish stretch one for investors, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The Dow, for example, is up by about 2% over that period and averages a gain of 1.3%, producing a winning record 65% of the time. The Dow is currently enjoying a win streak, over the past six Memorial Day/Labor Day periods, representing the longest win streak since 1989. Last year, the markets gained nearly 15% over that time.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f3f0f061a4ddd2ca31c53f8aa68e3cce\" tg-width=\"699\" tg-height=\"564\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>DOW JONES MARKET DATA</span></p>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 is on a similar win streak and is up nearly 8% so far this Memorial Day-Labor Day period. It has risen more than 70% over that period in past years and averages a 1.7% gain. The Dow, for example, is up by about 2% over that period and averages a gain of 1.3%, producing a winning record 65% of the time. The Dow is currently enjoying a win streak, over the past six Memorial Day/Labor Day periods, representing the longest win streak since 1989. It has risen more than 70% over that period in past years and averages a 1.7% gain. reports, quoting Raymond James strategist Tavis McCourt, who says that in the last two years, there was a big value and cyclical bias in stock markets after the holiday, and in 2018, markets basically collapsed after the summer drew to a close.\nIt is impossible to know if the stock market rally will peter out similarly this time around but there is a growing sense on Wall Street that valuations are too lofty and equity indexes are due for a pullback of at least 5% or better from current heights.\nMarkets will be back to business as usual on Tuesday and, of course, European bourses, including Beyond Inc, Workhorse Group and others, ended the session between 7% and 12% higher.</p><p>“(Meme stocks) are where the action is, but you flip it over and look crypto and that’s a mess,” Nolte said. “Now the meme stocks are taking over from crypto as the place to be and it’s all a consequence of very easy monetary policy.”</p><p>Reports from the U.S. Labor Department and National Federation of Independent Business appeared to confirm a labor shortage even as demand roars back to life, which could put upward pressure on wages, a precursor to wider inflation.</p><p>Market participants look to Thursday’s consumer price index data for further clues regarding inflation, and how it could influence the Federal Reserve’s timetable for tightening its monetary policy.</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 30.42 points, or 0.09%, to 34,599.82; the S&amp;P 500 gained 0.74 points, or 0.02%, at 4,227.26; and the Nasdaq Composite added 43.19 points, or 0.31%, at 13,924.91.</p><p>Of the 11 major sectors in the S&amp;P 500, consumer discretionary enjoyed the biggest percentage gain, and utilities suffered the largest loss.</p><p>Sales of Tesla Inc’s China-made electric cars jumped in May by 29%, marking a 177% year-on-year increase, according to the China Passenger Car Association.
